A City United, Real’s Night, And Mr Arsenal
Jun 4th, 2017 by 'holic
The awful events of last night in and around London Bridge were a reminder that in the happiest of times we need to remain vigilant and aware of the acts of others. The response has been predictably both understanding and yet defiant at the same time. London will not be cowed into submission by these cowardly acts of terror. The thoughts of us all, I’m sure, go out to the families and friends of the victims. May those patientsย most seriously injured surviveย their ordeal.
The Champions League Final
The final ‘holic pound of the season was ventured on Juve to triumph 2-1. I thought that a team famed for it’s defensive qualities, one that had only conceded three goals in the tournament until last night, would be able to create at least a couple of clear chances. At half-time I checked the cash-out value of my bet and ridiculed the thought of a profit of two pounds. Silly me.
As exciting and even a contest though the first-half had been Real turned on the after-burners in the second and you simply cannot deny they were good value for their eventual 4-1 triumph. The objectionable Ramos soured their performance with his pathetic play-acting to get Cuadrado sent off with the trophy already in the bag. It was a sad end to an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable match.
Obviously the “Arsenal aren’t in the same class’ comments were to the fore, and I cannot vigorously defend a team that shipped ten goals to Bayern. I do, however, believe that the Arsenal playing with a back three, that saw off the challenge of deserving champions in the FA Cup Final, would not be as humiliated. Obviously it will be at least another season before we have a chance to put that belief to the test. By then who knows will still be at the football club. I’ll concede the non-argument for now.
Tony Adams
Mr Arsenal has generated column inches and debate a plenty on social media as he promotes his new book, Sober. I have to believe that his 22 years at Arsenal, 14 as captain, 669 appearances and 10 major trophies, including league titles in 3 different decades, entitle him to a view about the club that was his life.
Yes, his views are controversial, are probably timed to maximise publicity for the book, and they will infuriate some Gooners, particularly of a younger persuasion who didn’t experience the good times with him. I don’t agree with much of what I have read lately, but I didn’t hear them in context. The newspapers have lapped them up to maximise clicks and I’ll regard them as such for now.
Also, for those who still cherish what he achieved as a Gooner I will be launching a competition this week for copies of the book so keep your eyes peeled if you want to win one of these special prize copies. In the meantime, if you haven’t seen it, here is the pre-launch video promo for the book, courtesy of the publishers,ย Simon & Schuster, who are kindly providing the prizes.

Hear Hear Holic- London and Britain will not be cowed..ever!
On the football front I hear Ox is rumoured to be close to signing a new contract. I would be delighted if he did. He is a talented lad who played superbly in the Cup Final.
Echo everything you said in your first paragraph, ‘Holic.
ksn from the previous drinks. Cech may not be ready to retire (and his contract runs to June 2019) but how much longer will be he first choice? I can’t see Szczesny coming back without a guarantee of regular football, however
Nice stuff H. The Ramos play acting tells you everything that is currently wrong with the game. Awful.
Not quite sure what Big Tone is banging on about. My guess is that it’s a bit of free advertising.
The events of last night along with other recent atrocities demonstrate what the world has become. Perhaps now all those wishy washy do Gooders sat in Westminster will now realise that they need to do their job.
Stay safe boys and girls.
Credit to Ariana Grande for her part in last night’s Manchester event. Not the greatest voice or the greatest version of this, but once over the emotion she was fine, and more importantly she done really good getting the concert together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKIYQ3cuCw8

This is the best version of the above … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4Zv8dN_2GM
Arsenal are definitely not at the same level as Real or even Juve. We need to improve our defence and passing accuracy by quite a few notches as giving the ball away as we do so often is hara kiri at this level.
I wish Tony Adams well and hope his new book sells well but he needs to temper his outbursts against Wenger as he sounds desperate and not convincing.
Thoughts with those affected by the recent terror attacks in London. It will be a long time before some of them recover to get their normal lives back.
NBN, Szczesny will want to be number one and play regularly which is why deciding to join Juve or even our club will be a difficult decision as neither Buffon or Cech appear ready to retire. Maybe staying with Roma is his best bet.
It’s a brave singer who covers a Roy Orbison classic, but this is extraordinary … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=712movFdPe0
I though some of the Juve defending in the second half was at our level, ksn…
Cech is obviously number one at the moment but is not without errors. If Szczesny returns I’d give him t’gloves given what he must have added at Roma to his obvious potential before he left.
On the Diane Abbot conversation I’d be more worried by her self publicity and lack of intelligence required for a cabinet post than concocted rubbish from the Daily Mail.
Talking of Abbotts I went to Hull KR on Saturday to see Billy. Bragg Devine Comedy and Paul Heaton Jaqui Abbott doing Housemartins Beautiful South numbers. Quite fantastic.
East Hull looks like a war torn Syria though. Britain really is a divided country when you see the conditions some people have to live in.
Chris at 7
absolute crap actually.
if you think that is top quality, you must have a very low threshold of what passes for top notch music.
Some magical songs sung by incomparable singers, just cannot be replicated by other try hards.
Next please.
@7,10
Just a tad harsh that, the song is from Mulholland Drive and
it worked well in the context of whatever was actually going
on in that film. And for me she does have a haunting voice.
Anyway, it’s a matter of taste I suppose

Juve were chasing the game in the second half which meant that the defence took a back seat. Having said that, Juve did not look as well set up defensively as their reputation suggested.
indubitably dorset M
.
” another slice of battenburg ? “
A real shame that Juve didn’t achieve the lead their first half display merited at HT. Might have delivered the Ronnie in despair so many desired. Fair play to Real their second half display merited the win.
As to Tone, what a captain! I would have followed the fella out of the trenches into ‘No Man’s Land’ in the 90’s and was very impressed with his first book and his account of sorting himself out. Very impressive personal discipline and drive. However every utterance I have heard from him as a pundit or simply talking about the game has left me non-plussed. I wouldn’t have him in my coaching team either.
I think I have to stand up for Chris, who I know to be perfectly capable of standing up for himself. He doesn’t suggest that track is better than RO, simply extraordinary and indeed it is a pretty fair rendition from a woman and probably fitted well with the movie (which I saw but don’t at all remember the soundtrack being extraordinary).
As to politesse, I hear that cba went to the Manners Academy of Atilla the Hun (and got expelled).

Dawning on me what will happen next season. Mostly Sunday and Monday League games because of the Europa League.
Do I carry on with Sunday match reports on a Monday night when they are history? I can’t take every other Monday off work to do a Monday morning report.
This may be the final call. Or I evolve into something else for which match reports are not important?
It seems tough, starting post Paris 2006, covering the tough years, only to hit tougher. All the podcasts have recorded on Thursdays since year dot, Tuesday Club aside. It has to change.
I may just be past my sell-by date.
We’ll see. Whatever happens, I have made the most amazing friends in this last decade and more. Thank you all.
Match reports are good but can be had elsewhere if required, it’s the other things that make this place special.
Even the Irish silly mooooooooos
Wise words. Travelled into London for a gig last night. You cannot stop doing the things you love or the zealots have won. Glad I did as US Punk veterans the Descendents were in fine form.
Don’t knock it on the head GH – this page is a calm sea of (in)sanity among all the Piers Morgan tweets and Arsenal Fan TV style egos.
H
Don’t despair.
Arsene’s cunning plan is to only be in the Europa league till December, when we finish 3rd in our group, having fielded only squad players and reserves in our matches, thereby missing out on the knockout stages, and setting us up for a Title push in the New Year.
So you only have half a season of Thursday/Sunday league games.
Normal service will be resumed in January with us lurking just behind the league leaders Huddersfield, who have surprised everyone by doing a ‘ Leicester ‘.
Utd/Chelsea/Pool and Spuds are all in bottom half of the table after tough CL and PL campaigns have caused numerous injuries to key players.
Mbappe, who we secured in the summer after a world record 150 million quid bid,has gone on a tear, and is scoring shedloads of goals in our new revolutionary line up of 1 – 7 – 2 – 1.
By the turn of the year we do not have a single player in the treatment room,a world first for the Arse.
Now what could possibly go wrong. !!
Thanks bath, for saying I didn’t actually say it was better, it isn’t. Just extraordinary.
As is this, a piece I still find extraordinary after more than 40 years of repeated playing … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM1U8Oax4c8
Now, can someone tell me if the final note is genuine, bearing in mind this recording dates from before the earliest samplers?
Your comments are always welcome, Clive. ๐
Hold fast, ‘Holic, the Goonerverse would be an immeasurably poorer place without you.
I am sure the regulars fortunate enough to get to games will continue to provide the on-the-spot reports from the Sunday and Monday night games, as some did so well this season past. Then you can dispense sanity on a more convenient schedule. In any case, we are so disliked by those who arrange the fixtures and choose the televised games that we will will probably be playing Thursday nights and Saturday lunchtimes, so it won’t be a problem…
Chris @47, that was an extraordinary piece of wailing. However the lyricist should be shot. ??

Your reports are incomparable but there are a few regular visitors here including me who would be delighted to help out with match reports. You could then do what Fleet Street call a colour piece reflecting on the issues from the game.
Wenger is playing an interesting game getting linked with Mbappe who every major club wants to sign and we’d struggle to keep if we sign hi. I suspect there are other possible acquisitions on the Riviera like Seri or Lemar that may be the real targets.
Holic
Like TTG count me in for any contributions you need. But I also think that what could work well after a game that you attend in person could be opening the bar with a one liner, something like Arsenal 7 Man Utd 0, the bar is open for comments (could be done on a phone in the pub?) and then leaving it open to the community. You could then comment more reflectively, in your usual way, the following evening in a new post.
But one things for sure. It has to be your call. I am in awe of the commitment you show to this blog especially while still working and enjoy it hugely, but you have to enjoy it too.
Whatever your decision, thank you for the last ten years.
Or you could give the keys to the Feelgood Foundation ๐
First signing the summer announced, as expected
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/20170606/sead-kolasinac-to-join-arsenal
Holic, hang on in there. Your patience and respect for all is a wonderful antidote to all the short term bollix and noise that swirls around us nowadays. You’re no pushover though either as we know from the opinions, sharp wit and spikey interjections during drink time. The way you called time on the other proprietor (of AFC) was wonderfully diplomatic and respectful. A great example for both young ‘Holics who have their I.D. in order and pop in here for the odd shandy and, indeed, for less tactful old Gruffalos like me who harp on and bang their pint glasses on the bar top. God knows, these qualities and that type of tolerance are what’s going to help set Europe (and the UK..I’m not giving up on you lads yet) apart from other parts of the world in these troubled times. Keep up the good work…somehow.. COYG, Up the Arse, Up London, Up Manchester.
Holic… Hang in there…at least until we win the CL.
Thorougly enjoy the reads and drinks!
๐
So Kolasinac is finally here!… might signal the end for Gibbs.
Still awaiting news about Ozil and Alexis…and Mbappe? One can only dream…

Welcome to Woolwich STEPHEN COLLINGWOOD, aka ‘THE OUTHOUSE’. Special Move: ‘The Last Rites’, a tackle applied at 20mph. @seadk6
Hi Holic, I was hoping you would keep the bar going for another decade given your relative youth and love for AFC. I understand the sacrifices you have to make but for the sake of all your admiring followers I hope you decide to keep it open for some more years. Thanks.
Re: Kolasinac.

An echo to all those pressing you to keep this inestimable establishment alive and kicking. At the risk of sounding like Thorin Oakenshield, all at Castle Ned at your service, quills raised and ready in the cause.
H@43.
By the law of averages, half of those games will be away so it won’t make any difference. The home games will involve the normal bucket load of beer so will be the normal 24 hours late anyway. The later reports will be more of opinion rather that facts and stats?
It’s the Monday morning hangover you need to work out how to deal with.
On another issue, does anyone genuinely believe that we are trying to spend something in the region of ยฃ100 million on an 18 year old???? If it is then the world is more nuts than I ever thought ???
Morning all. Just to emphasize what Bath, TTG and CM100 have already said. You have fed is well over the past ten years, I’m sure we can all rally round and help out with a match report or 5 during the season. Anyway, we will only be in the Europa league for a year, normal service will promptly be resumed next year. All the best.
Steve, what is way more nuts than the valuation is the notion Mbappe would join us and play Thursday night football. Unfathomable and a nasty PR stunt. We can ignore it but I hope we can also ignore rumblings from Bellerin and Giroud. I would hate to be left depending on Ox and Welbz for those two roles as they pick up their usual injuries. But given the first two were royally messed around by the manager last season, who could blame the pair of them ? There’s also the small matter of circa 75 odd mill if we sold that pair…ching, ching. Slot Jack back in (Santi still out), play Theo (penance over) for the departed Alexis and, hey, the Great British core rides again !! If those players do want to leave, we’ll have a serious problem and we are going to end up awash with cash like never before, so I hope Tescos and Sainos are open late night for transfer deadline night. That’s before we even talk about the supposed deadwood departures, who look more like remainers and League Cup/Thursday night nailed-on starters to me.
It is not unfathomable that a star player would join Arsenal to play Europa League unless we do not pay enough money. Exhibit A: Anthony Martial joining Manchester United who must have paid him enough.
Actually that Exhibit A should have been Ibrahimovic who seemed to enjoy his Europa League campaign well enough.
Steve@68
I want to believe.
We buy Mbappe, he is the new Messi and drives us to
the next 4 titles and a CL treble. Stays with us for 12
years and then leaves having scored 600 goals in all
competitions for The Mighty Arsenal.
We sell him at 31 to Real Madrid as the first billion
pound player but he’s lost it and never scores for them.
Real Madrid go bankrupt. And we win the CL for the
13th consecutive season.
My future seems better than Scgooner’s @70 ๐
Bt8, excellent analogy (Martial) in many ways…..on paper. But my wife has straight blonde hair and is about the same age as Claudia Schiffer, but a hotter proposition ? Alas no but she’s lovely all the same. Perhaps more relevant is the fact we’re still on the record as saying we won’t and can’t go head to head with the richer clubs for the prize players, even though we can afford to if we have to. The business model is the business model and it is in perfect unison with our careful scout/manager. Regarding next year you either believe the club will go bonkers and spend like mad to reclaim CL status or you believe they will, as ever, cut the cloth to suit the (less healthy) circumstances. I expect no change and a net spend < 50 mill. Which is probably quite sensible given where we're at now in fact. I'd imagine Lacazette is the real target still but even that fish will be tricky to land. We're doooomed Captain Mannering !
sc74 ?
SCG in for a paddlin’?
Canoe elaborate on what paddlin’ is NBN pls ? I wasn’t in the military or boarding school, I’m Oirish for god’s sake ! Sounds a bit like what Theo got after the Palace interview is it ?

Probably.
wouldn’t kick her out for eatin’ crisps
Thanks all for your kind words and offers. Between the cricket and the election I am being hugely distracted so the next post will be on Saturday. Hopefully by then we will have signed Schhh, you know who! ๐
SCG@77: https://youtu.be/ZXQR-cPXlmY
I hope your wife doesn’t read Goonerholic, Scg…
Lacazette would be the third shortest player in our squad, just ahead of Santi and Alexis. Nothing wrong with those two of course, but the squad is generally crying out for more authority I would have thought.
Nothing wrong with Santi and Alexis above, but could be neither of them will play for us next season, making Lacaz our new shortest player. ๐
Chelsea have supposedly told Costa he can go.
Would youโฆ?
@85
๐
A good question!
Costa got very frustrated playing in
that Chav team, imagine how
frustrated he would get playing
for us – volcanic I’d guess ๐
He’d probably be hacked down from behind, by accident.
H. No chance of that signing. The tittle tattle will have run its course as today is the last day for renewals. Then we will be back to NBT’s, like a new signing and freebies.
?
Thank you very much for that NBN. No, hang on, I’m for a paddlin’ ?!? How dare you !?! So, as I thought, our very own Mr Burns gave Theo a right good paddlin. COYG.
Are the days of trumpeting our commitment to a ‘ British core ” coming through our junior ranks now a distant memory.
Or are the ones we have, just not good enough.
I note the England under 20 squad that has reached the semi final of their World Cup, [ playing Italy today for a place in the final ] has only 1 Arsenal player in the 23 man squad, young Maitland Niles, who can only get on the pitch as a 2nd half sub,and the England squad for the under 21 Euro Champs starting later this month, has only 2 Arsenal players in it,namely Holding and Chambers.
Very disappointing.
I’ve been reading some sententious
nonsense about Soton bravely
reporting Liverpool for tapping up.
Maybe so, but I think all clubs do
it one way or another, including
Soton and there’s no brave moral
stance about it, just naked self-
interest in hanging on to the
player or driving his price up.
Beats me why clubs can’t ask
players if they’d be interested in
joining, happens in business all
the time. If the PL clubs want to
make football a business, which
they’ve done anyway the greedy
bastards, then employees should
not be subject to restraint of trade.
I’ll stop grumping now.

The signing of Kolasinac would have been a lot more sexy if we had spent a few dozen million on him but he could turn out to be a difference maker.
Congrats to the England Under-20s. Very well deserved, they were on top for the entire game after falling behind inside the first 2 minutes.
Some useful looking players, including Maitland-Niles, but only one outstanding one, Kyle Walker-Peters, who we probably have no chance of signing as he’s a spud, dammit. He was brilliant, a tough attacking fullback who reminded me a lot of Cashley.
News reports say the Fly Emirates shirt is a thing of the past, and I have been anticipating this day for a long time. Now to think of the least objectionable corporate shirt sponsor. It is a difficult one, as all the companies that sponsor shirts at the moment are pretty objectionable in one way or another. Didn’t Atletico Madrid have Azerbaijan on their shirts last season? Maybe we should take Uzbekistan.
Not that I wouldn’t think Uzbekistan is objectionable if I knew more about it.
I’m sure Mr Usmanov could enlighten you, bt8, although he’d probably prefer one of his company names on the shirt. Not sure what Stan would think though.

Gregory Peck had an unusually large head. Either that or the movie poster was doctored. Jus’ sayin’
*waddles*
i liked you better
when you didn’t answer
to a belfast postcode
8ball
are you singing from the scriptures ?
Not sure about a Belfast postcode, cba. Grand Marais (north shore of Lake Superior) postcode, possibly.
My spellchecker thinks I want to write pesticide when I try to write postcode. We call them zip codes over here, so the machine doesn’t get it.
The music, the music @160. Better than the poster by a long shot.

Used to be a fella on here who said he lived in Thunder Bay, Ontario, not far from Grand Marais, but he was always coming up with outlandish stuff.
Fairly appropriate for somebody from the outlands actually.
that’s exactly what i said to Margaret

enjoyed that ??
Did you say something, cba?
I like bt8 too, btw. He’s one of the few around when the arms of Morpheus release me to another day. AND he makes more sense than most so worth exchanging opinions with.
Here’s a nice combo … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4xYTspgC4M

Omedeto gozaimasu, OsakaMatt.
But have you got away with the self-assist?
NBN. Special dispensation for OsakaMatt I say. He is writing in from the other side of the world, for crissake, or tao’s maybe. And it is the close season to boot. Well in, OM.
If it should be found out that OM is not writing in from the other side of the world, it almost goes without saying, would be a different matter entirely.
@BT
Very gentlemanly of you sir.

The name of the French Open champion, Ostapenko, harkens back to the height of the Cold War, when not just the Labour Party would host a pinko. ๐
Coat and hat already donned and running out the door.
Great goal by Ox for England after coming on as sub.
Extend the Ox’s contract too..!

clearly
the only thing that’s changed for these people
is
“they used to target people not like me but now they are”
That’s me, big man ๐ There isn’t really a party for me and those of a social democratic persuasion any more. I haven’t changed how much I want my fellow man to have an opportunity to succeed. I cannot watch these attacks on the old, the disabled, and the NHS.
First time ever I voted Labour because I thought this government had swung too far to the right. I was wrong, They have swung even further to the right and Mrs May has sold her soul and probably the Good Friday agreement to save herself, albeit temporarily. Selfish and totally against the national interest.
The grandees are already plotting her demise.
You are allowed different opinions. You will be far more affected by the implications of her actions than I.
I pray she is stopped sooner rather than later.
but hey
LOADSAMONEY , eh ?

I wish.
Final salary pension was frozen five years ago. Average salary, even by Swindon standards. Enjoyed my job and the people I worked with for many years.
