Gunners Repel Cologne Invasion
Sep 14th, 2017 by 'holic
Chaotic scenes in and around the stadium prior to tonight’s Europa League tie forced a one hour delay to kick-off. Reportedly 20k Cologne supporters arrived at the stadium gates despite their allocation being 2900 tickets, the usual number for visiting teams in the Premier League and European competition. Questions about the policing of the travelling supporters, and their access to home tickets, will doubtless be many in the coming days.
When finally the match got underway the manager went with an eleven which was possibly slightly stronger than expected. Ahead of David Ospina we went with Rob Holding, Per Mertesacker, and Nacho Monreal. Hector Bellerin and Ainsley Maitland-Niles started as the wing-backs outside a central pairing of Mohamed Elneny and Alex Iwobi. Theo Walcott and Alexis were positioned to support Olivier Giroud from the flanks.
The match kicked off in what was clearly a poorly segregated stadium, and that would be a concern throughout. When the game got underway both sets of supporters created a wall of noise. Rob Holding, understandably nervous, avoided a card for two early challenges. The defence didn’t hold firm though when Ospina played a clearance from outside his box to a Cologne player, it deflected to Cordoba who produced a wonderful finish over the retreating goalkeeper from around thirty-five yards out. Nine minutes gone, and we were behind.
Arsenal 0-1 Cologne
Arsenal attempted to level quickly but Giroud’s effort from a Maitland-Niles cross was deflected for a wasted corner. Ospina, with help from Holding, had to be quick to dive at the feet of Hector when he got clear behind Mertesacker. Again Giroud was on the end of a cross, this time from Bellerin, but his header was comfortably pouched by Horn. Then midway through the half Iwobi sent Walcott clear but the rusty winger scuffed his effort across goal.
We survived a penalty shout when Hector went down under an Ospina challenge, but the offside flag had already been raised and with an hour left we were still very much in the match. At the other end Sanchez and Giroud combined to tee up Elneny for a rasping drive wide of the far post. Hector, having attempted to continue, hobbled off with what appeared to be an ankle problem.
Seven minutes from the break Giroud was again on the end of a cross from Alexis after some good approach play by Iwobi. The Frenchman’s glancing header missed the intended spot however. Not only Walcott looked rusty. Alexis was heavy of touch with a number of passes but nobody could accuse him of not putting in a full shift in the opening half. The old Arsenal problem of laboured build-up and excessive square and backwards passing was evident.
The half-time whistle prompted an outbreak of jeers from a frustrated home support. Arsenal’s organisation, or lack of it, on and off the pitch, was clearly lacking to this point. The unfortunate Holding was hooked at the start of the second-half to allow Sead Kolasinac to enable a switch to a back four. Maitland-Niles was pushed in to support Elneny behind Iwobi as the playmaker.
The Arsenal were level when Walcott’s cross was deflected into the path of Kolasinac who smashed home a left foot volley for his second Gunners goal in spectacular style. The crowd found their voice again and “We’re by far the greatest team” replaced a German song to the tune of “the bonny, bonny prince of Loch Lomond”. Inspired substitution?
Arsenal 1-1 Cologne
Bellerin’s cross towards a marauding Walcott found Heintz who prevented any further damage. Cologne broke but Bellerin was too quick for Höger and any danger passed. The young Spaniard was showing a much better level of performance. He appears to be coming back to his best in timely fashion.
Maitland-Niles exchanged a pair of one-twos which resulted in him being one on one with Horn and unfortunately for us the ‘keeper won that particular battle. What a goal it would have been. Jack Wilshere appeared on the sideline for a more than welcome return to first team action. As he stood with the fourth official the Gunners struck again. Iwobi’s pass sent Alexis out to the left flank but the Chilean cut back inside to the edge of the box and curled an absolute beauty into the far top corner of the net. On came Jack for Iwobi.
Arsenal 2-1 Cologne
“Who knows how far the Arsenal could go in this Europa League?” queried John Harrison on commentary. A valid question given a far from first choice eleven were now ahead against what is likely to be our toughest opponents in the group phase. Cordoba galloped clear and drew a fine near post stop from Ospina to preserve the newly gained advantage.
Bellerin, Giroud, and Walcott again opened up Cologne’s left flank but the chip back across goal was cleared somewhat desperately. Alexis was fouled in the aftermath and smashed the free-kick into the hands of Horn. The Arsenal had a sense of purpose again. Wilshere sent Alexis scurrying through but from an offside position the number seven shanked one into the rough.
The sight of Reiss Nelson being prepared for his introduction was uplifting. Without over-hyping the young man he has been knocking on the first team door and should get a number of opportunities in this competition this season. From the West Upper the sound of Maria yelling “Come on you Gunners” confirmed the invading Cologne army had fallen silent. Kolasinac crossed, Wilshere dummied, Walcott’s effort was parried, and Bellerin gilded his night by slotting in the rebound, nutmegging Horn in the process.
Arsenal 3-1 Cologne
The Grove was emptying quickly as those from the home counties headed in the direction of their last trains home. It left the Cologne fans to console themselves with an impressive dirge or two. They had come to celebrate a long awaited return to European football, not to take liberties, but it is likely both clubs will be subject to UEFA fines as a result.
Had Cologne come out to defend their narrow advantage in the second-half, or had we driven them back with the excellence of our performance after the interval?
I don’t know, but our first ever Europa League game resulted in a very impressive win, eventually. Job done.

Well I’m ATG. Sanchez-like
Get in! 😀
Not to read the post….that was quick Maestro!
@ Delia from previous drinks
Don’t blame you one bit I would do exactly the same!
Good win utter shambles in the first half it has to be said! A much improved performance in the second! We still need to improve in all areas the keeper situation is also alarming! Ospipa for me is no better keeper than Wojtek! The better one was allowed to leave for silly money too!
All in all a good night but the cracks were there to be exploited!
Not=Now silly keyboard!
Thanks for another informative and entertaining report, ‘holic. 🙂
As I was on extended chauffeuring duties I missed about 85% of the match including all four goals, but have seen the first three and can only conclude that this was a bad game to have missed.
Nice one, Guv’nor, and a quick one. I am sure it would have been the same game as I saw had i seen it.
AC Milan and Zenit St Petersburg both banged in five and Villarreal and Lazio three. Some firepower out there.
Great write up: loved seeing Jack zipping over the home grass and opening things up and what a goal from Alexis ! Second half was worth the wait enfin !
I’ve said it far too often and I’ll say it again.
Back Four.
All day every day and especially on Sunday.
If someone could point cba in the direction of this, when he rolls in drunk at half past the milk…
Mr CBA. You remember that mashup guy I posted a couple of videos from, wot you dun hailed as a genius?
Well.. you ain’t heard nothing yet.

I don’t blame Ospina for their goal. At least he got to the ball when it was clear our back 3 weren’t going to, and just unlucky that his hurried clearance fell to his Colombian mate, who simply had to chip him. He could have stayed on his line and had everyone criticise him had they scored, but he did the right thing, imo.
A beautifully taken goal I thought, though not as technically difficult as those of Kalashnikov and Alexis.
Theo certainly did look ‘rusty’ in the first half (his first start since early April, so no real surprise), but he was warming to it in the second half and could have been luckier. Jack looked surprisingly sharp and maybe still has something to say in an Arsenal shirt. And good to see a brief cameo from young Nelson who looks to have a very bright red and white future.
Back 4 against the chavs please or we could be sunk by half time.
Nice report maestro. Saw the game ‘on delay’ after an evening of astonishing entertainment from Derren Brown. The second half Arsenal performance almost matched him. Certainly an improvement on a somewhat disjointed first half.
I agree with Chris, Ospina was unlucky but I also agree with those who don’t rate him as a ‘top keeper’. Maitland-Niles looked the part when moved inside in the second half – pity he didn’t finish that lovely move – he’ll be a good player in time, hope it’s at Arsenal. Good to see Jack strutting his stuff again – he could well have a part to play this season.
Disgraceful behaviour from the Koln fans. However Arsenal had a part to play in it too. I do recall a regular of this establishment being ejected from his Club Level seat because of a fracas due to being surrounded by unpleasant Galatasaray fans (tautology, I know). Seems like it’s the money that counts for Arsenal not the safety of the regulars. Like the Guvna, I expect Arsenal will be fined because of their failure to manage the crowd segregation adequately.
One down several to go! ? ?
The Cologne-ic fans had every right to all come over from Deutchland to enjoy the sites and lights of old London town, after a quarter of a century of non-European football! ?
Isn’t it still full-free movement of EU peeps? ?
Are the Brexit negotiations over already? ?
Did I miss something from over there in Brussels? ?
Full blame falls on the 5/O ? on both sides of the Eurozone! ?
Only seen very brief highlights.
I agree with all that’s been said by Chris and Bath.
Ospina is nowhere near a top keeper but he was a bit unlucky that the rebound fell to a bloke good enough to lob him from 40 yards. He would be off his line if he’d just kicked the ball from the edge of his area.
Young Holding is shot to pieces at the moment and cries for a return to the back four make sense.
Theo was rusty but his original touch for the first goal was that of a man in diving boots. Keown crucified him apparently . Kalashnikov continued his monster impression and Alexis got a sublime goal.
If you got a pre- match security warning it might be worth returning it to Ivan Gazidis and asking what happened. Arsenal signed lots of red members with German email addresses just before they play a German team in Europe. As our American friends say. Go figure! What happened to Delia happened to several friends although some stayed for part of the game. We will be fined or worse today and Cologne need to be disciplined as they must have known this was about to happen. I’ve been reading about 20,000 Cologne fans arriving in London for days. I wasn’t in town yesterday but apparently they brought the West End to a standstill. I understand their fans were generally friendly – is that true ?
Can you imagine if we drew Millwall in the Cup!?
Hopefully another nail in the Gazidis coffin . Sub- optimal performance all round except from a few stars last night.
Finally lovely to see Jack back. Let’s hope he can rise again. He was special.
Nice write up H. Hope all is good in your world?
I think most saw the same game. A poor first half lacking any real cohesion. A much better second half played with s lot more precision and at a far greater tempo. Three great goals and in the end a deserved win.
I don’t agree with some above re Koln’s first goal. Poor keeping in my opinion. If you make the decision to come then it ends up in row Z. Good to see Sanchez get a good run out. I thought he looked sharper as the game went on. Some understandable rust elsewhere but hopefully a run out will benefit many.
Highlight for me was seeing Jack back. I first saw Jack play as a 16 year old. He had so much ability and talent that it was ridiculous. His little cameo not only showed glimpses of what he is capable of, but also showed up massively what our midfield has lacked for years. I hope that he stays fit and gets sharper and sharper.
The scenes before the game were shocking. It’s interesting reading some of the comments above. 17,000 Koln fans turn up on mass, all without tickets and then force their way into the stadium and it’s the fault of the authorities and the club???? The blame culture that exists never ceases to amaze me. How nice it would be for people in today’s society to actually take responsibility for their own actions rather than look to blame others? No wonder we are in such a mess.
Onwards to the bus stop. Can’t say I’m optimistic but then I wasn’t massively optimistic when I arrived at Wembley back in May? So, who knows?
Have a good day everyone.
I’m massively disappointed.
…that there’s no perfume pun in the headline. Eg…
Arsenal scent victory after off-putting first half
Or
Sweet smell of triumph as Sanchez freshens the air
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed that. This already feels more Arsenal’s level than the CL, and I for one would be stoked if we won it. AC Milan and Zenit are probably the biggest threats in the competition, can you imagine Arsenal vs Milan in the final in Lacazette’s hometown?
Have a great Friday all, and here’s to an embarrassing loss for Conte on Sunday.
Just seen the highlights as failed
to stay awake for the scheduled
4AM start. Looks like we played
well 2nd half.
Ash M-N played on the left
pre-season and I didn’t think it
suited him then but fair play to
AW for switching things round
earlier than usual.
Good result in the end.
As for the crowd problems, I agree
with Steve. I feel Ploddy on the
ground made the right decision as
things could have got worse. Yes,
the planning was obviously bad but
the fault lays with the people who
caused it.
No doubt it will be a bashing from
UEFA anyway.
Also, the club needs to stand up
and do something for fans who
couldn’t see the game or lost
their seats. Time to show some
class.
Well. that was …different!
As is our frequent practice for midweek European games, we went to a Greek Cypriot restaurant on the Seven Sisters, about ten minutes walk from the ground. We had had our starters and were awaiting the arrival of the mains, when my son announced that there was a 60 minute delay in the kick off time, back from 8.05 to 9.05. The restaurant was filled with Gooners and you could hear the buzz as the news was absorbed. As we ate our dinner we were checking the phones and looking at the videos coming in of barricades being overturned and general mayhem around the ground. It was getting towards the time we would have left for the ground (7.30 or so) and we had to decide what to do. Some complimentary baklava came from the restaurant owner (I love the hospitable Greek and especially Cypriot people). We decided we were in this for the long haul. I then took some clear and decisive action that I’m sure honourable members of this establishment will approve of. I ordered more wine.
We were helped in our decision to stay on and attend the full match by the fact that I drive to football from the Cambridge area. If we had been on the train I’d probably have followed Delia and called it a night at that point. My last train would have been 11.25 but who knew what might have happened to the trains or stations in the area? You made the right call Delia.
So, just after 8 we strolled down Hornsey Road expecting we knew not what. As we walked past the Tolly it was heaving with folk taking the opportunity to have several pints more than the usual pre match quota. We went under the railway bridge and reached the first perimeter point, where you are usually stopped and asked to open coats etc (I presume to make sure you don’t have a device strapped to your chest). We were waved through by some shell shocked looking stewards. As we walked round the concourse to the North Bank all was calm and actually quiet. No queues to get in. We were body searched (as usual) but all the stewards were very agitated.
Into the ground about 8.15. I saw no Koln supporters in the North Bank at all, but, as you’ll all have seen, they were everywhere else in the ground, congregating around the Clock End, which looked like an FA Cup game with the whole end given up to away supporters. They were making a magnificent noise.
There’s a video doing the rounds of the concourse behind block 25 (Clock End lower). Arsenal fans singing the Ozil song. Then Koln fans singing one of their songs. It looks like a football Utopia, with passion, banter but no trouble.
As the game kicked off the atmosphere was intense. Think Spurs games, big CL games against Barca or Bayern. The big Koln presence geed up the home support and it was great.
Holic has written a great match report so I won’t repeat it, just make a few comments.
Theo was dreadful. Not just rusty but back to all his bad old tricks. Wandering infield to hide behind defenders leaving his full back with no one to pass to. Head down running away from team mates. I counted him offside five times, could have been more. He couldn’t trap a bag of cement (that could be rust I suppose) and missed chance after chance, including two in the second half. As I commented at Preston last year, AMN is not a full back and so he proved again. But as he showed at Southampton and again in the second half, he is an excellent, growing centre midfielder. The run through the middle of the defence which so nearly produced a wonder goal was fantastic.
How fitting that my new man crush, the Beast, scored the Lucas Podolski memorial goal with a Thor like thunderbolt.
So wonderful to see LJW back in a delightful cameo. The runs, the flicks, the awareness, all still there.
And Reiss Nelson. Let me add my voice to that of the Guvna’s in lauding his arrival. My first time seeing him live. Let’s just say he is not short of confidence for a 17 year old wearing 61 on his back. Demanding the ball. Running upfield. Taking players on with step overs. I, for one, am investing £10 to go to the Doncaster game just to watch him. Actually this second string team, with Jack, RN, AMN, Iwobi, Giroud et al, is going to be good, if occasionally nerve wracking at the back.
The team was much better balanced with four at the back and three in midfield, although Per and Nacho would not be my first choice CBs in such a set up!
Left the ground at the final whistle. Arsenal stands thin by then as people dashed for trains. Koln still giving it plenty from their end. As we walked back to the car we saw a unique, in our experience, sight. It was 11.05. The Tolly was locked up and dark. Obviously they’d wisely decided against a few extra quid but with a possibility of more trouble.
So. Conclusions. It proved to be a great night with no trouble where we were at all. That wasn’t true everywhere in the ground according to Gooners phoning in to the radio on the way home but nothing serious. The Koln fans came for a great day out in London, plenty of beer and to watch a game of football. They didn’t come for a punch up.
But modern football has to be segregated and questions will have to be asked. This could have gone badly wrong – but it didn’t.
Wonder how many Doncaster will bring?
Thanks for a great report c100.
Good to hear all went well
in the end!

c100 @21. Clear and decisive. Sounds like a helluva lot of fun. 😀
4 UEFA charges against Koln for
last night. Only 1 fairly minor
charge against The Arsenal.
I sa this graphic and thought, “Fuck me they’ve got the Brazil brothers at the back” It was only when I got to Garcia Venezuela that the penny dropped 😀

What a great report and your observations on the game and our lads are very interesting. I don’t trust Theo he is a physical coward, the most lily- livered player I’ve seen in Arsenal Red. If he doesn’t fancy it he doesn’t help the cause. Yet he has real ability and is a better finisher than Welbeck but Welbeck is much braver.
Also agree about AMN- he is better than Ciquelin in midfield. And Kalashnikov will be in the PL team if the season .

Professor Kate Williams no less. None of this mere Doctor stuff for cba.
At least I think she’s a Professor… she might be a Doctor with a big office 🙂
Good afternoon, good folk. Chelsea preview later this evening. ??
Just finished watching City dismantle Watford. City players subbed in: Bernardo Silva, Gundogan, Sane’. Galacticos indeed.
Watching Liverpoo drop points at
home to Burnley was much more
enjoyable.
I must confess that I have found Alice Roberts extremely irritating but I may have encountered her in the wrong context.
cm100, I do accept that Joan Bakewell has probably peaked in the tottie stakes. However I also find Victoria Coren somewhat irritating. Martine Croxall is much more beguiling.
‘Arry’s got the tin tack.
Double-gunned Fabianski also playing a starring role in my fantasy team. 😀
Wembley hoodoo gaining steam for sorry Sp*rs. 😀
Totts drop two points too.?
Pretty favourable set of results in other PL games this afternoon including Pool and Spurs only managing draws.
A win tomorrow would see us jump to 9 points, level with Chelsea and Newcastle. Not sure where we would place (3rd, 4th or 5th).
But then this is Arsenal, away at a big club, so a point would be a miracle.
True,Porco. I would take a point away at the Bridge any day.
When I lived in Bath from 1993-2015 I became friends with Alice & her husband Dave. Both top top people & Alice was a most pleasant drunk to be around, especially at Bavarian nights at The Bierkeller!! Even in a drunken haze she would dazzle us all with looks, charm & intelligence.Smitten?Me?…..
