The Return Of Wengerball?
Apr 2nd, 2009 by 'holic
First off I must say a big thanks to all those who came to visit on Wednesday. I feel I should apologise to gerry (comment 64) and Gabriele, who took it all rather more seriously than was intended.
Thoughts now thankfully turn back to real football, after a painfully dull international week. For us that means a return game with the last team to inflict a Premiership defeat on us. Manchester City may have provided us with many fruitful trips in the past, but this season we were well and truly humbled at Eastlands.
Sixteen unbeaten league outings have followed that grim afternoon, but only in the last three have we shown signs of a return to something vaguely resembling Wengerball. If Andrey Arshavin has been instrumental in that revival, what effect do you suppose a returning Cesc Fabregas may have? An exciting couple of months lies ahead.
The last week would appear to have robbed us of the services of Robin van Persie, Eduardo, and Abou Diaby. Samir Nasri and Carlos Vela are also potential doubts. Tell me again what is international football good for? Thankfully we can look forward to seeing a squad including a fit-again Cesc, Theo Walcott, and Emmanuel Adebayor. At least there is some good news.
I could do an in-depth assessment of the visitors and convince myself they could complete the double over us, so instead I will just say that away from home City have been rubbish with a capital ‘S’. One win in fifteen starts on the road tells a story, and with Aston Villa heading for Old Trafford this weekend we have a real opportunity to put clear air between us and the pretenders for that fourth Champions League berth.
As long as either Arshavin or Fabregas are on the park throughout I will be expecting a win on Saturday. The ‘holic pound is hovering over the button that offers around sixes for a 2-0 home triumph. I may even have a tidy punt on Adebayor to score at any time, offered at 6/4 by Paddy Power.
Does that sound arrogant, or over-confident? Good! We haven’t been this bullish for much of the season, but now we are getting to the pointed end who is to say we won’t be holding our nerve better than all the rest? Certainly not me.
Yet!

DRINK!
6X please. To toast another superb victory and push us ever closer to the Chavs. Evening everyone.
Ah gwan blogs, what would ya say to a nice cup of tea?
Suspects a blogger Mafia about 1st drink!
But looking forward to strengthening 4th place this weekend.
Come on you Gunners!
I’m happy to stick my head above the parapet and say that we WILL hold our nerve better than all of the rest. The most severe travails of the season are behind us. We’ll look back on this one as the season in which, despite criticism and severe doubt from every quarter, AW got it absolutely right (well, except for the Willie G captaincy “experiment).
So what do I mean? At the start the doubters said “The man’s mad! He needs to buy experience. He needs to spend big money to compete. Why didn’t he sell Adebayor for $30M?” and on and on and on. Mid-season they said “it’s time for him to go. He’s lost the plot”. So what’s happened? FA Cup semi. CL quarter and a semi very much on the cards. CL qualification next season either as winners or a 3 or 4 finish in the league.
And all this without Cesc, Rosicky, Theo, Eduardo and Ade for major slots of the season. In the meantime, Denilson, Song and Bendtner have come on a ton. Gibbs, Vela and Ramsey have been blooded and Arshavin has arrived for a fraction of the asking price of less than 12 months ago.
Too bullish? I don’t think so. 4-1 on Saturday and then we’re off to the races for the rest of the season.
Just want to take the time to say thank you to all the true gooners who’ve supported the boys through the thick and thin. Through the defeats to Fulham and Hull the first half of the season, to the whippings of Blackburn, Chelski and Man Utd. Thank you for believing that our young lads would pull through all the stronger and better for it.
The team will grow together and win a S**T load of trophies in the years to come. We’ve just got to have faith in our boys. And i truely belive we’ll start the trophy collection this season. With the experience these young guys have gained the SKY is the limit. It is us against the world; we all know how everyone who isn’t a gooner, hates Arsenal. So have faith and pride in our club that they will succeed and make us proud and once again the envy of English, European, and World football. Gooner4lyf
Heya, ‘olic. Pint of cider please.
Rubbish with a capital ‘S’. That’s awesome.
I’m kinda nervous about the game this weekend, largely because Ade is coming back and I’m not too sure about Cesc having a role in the middle of the park this soon after such a long time out…
Then again.
Alright ‘olic, here’s hoping your punt will pay for your drinks and mine too
First have to thank the goonerholic positivity on our team. And for the return of midfield maestro and the togonator and the evergreen theo lets hope we are going for a clean sheet for the rest of the season in pl and cl and that since the fab injury ade has never scored lets hope the ingridients he lacked then was fab absence.
‘Bullish’, you ask. Why not. You can see the improvement over the recent weeks, and with that comes the confidence. A powerful physcological weapon is confidence. And i reckon we have the most of it in the entire league. 4th Place? Can’t see why 3rd place is not realistic.
Oh, a pint of the black stuff please Mr Holic.
To me iam just eager to see the two mid generals how they perform.
Because, they both creative. But we are going to mis van or eduardo i
one of them was around, we where to see fire. I mean we where going to kill.
Butn stil we are going to send some packing.
good day.
I cannot wait till Saturday, I hate to see several key players have been once again hurt during Internationals!!! Ade needs to step up for the remaining matches and bag goals, goals, and goals, that way he’ll be earning that huge pay rise he got last summer. Anyway I see a 3-1 to the Arsenal!!!
Water, please.
Plenty of. Thank you.
Steve-o, when are you going to resume gunning from the east?
Water, Ollie?
WATER????
The April’s fool’s posting was great ‘holic 😉 ….and cos its Platini, it was scarily believable. haha.
great to have Cesc back tomorrow. we’ve/i’ve missed him.
Check out my own blog here: http://thenorthbank.wordpress.com
FFS… A potential loss of five players from the Interlull. Just lovely. But, I’m still optimistic (read: bullish). And I am positively salivating at the prospect of what our midfield is going to look like for this match. Cesc & Song (if he keeps playing the way he has) in the middle, with Theo & Andrey on the wings? Salivating, I tell you. I’ll lift a bit of Syrah in the general direction of ‘Holic and his 2-0 Saturday. Come on you Gunners!
I took a break due to some personal reasons, ‘holic, but yes i’ve been meaning to resume service with a facelift to the site too.
probably not with wordpress tho.
its really cool that you remember my humble effort on sharing my Arsenal passion.
Anyway, where’s that pint?
A glass of new world red, please ‘holic, or something Spanish will do…
A pleasing Tempranillo for Snail…
Just read the comments on the Gabriele article – most amusing… Well done again.

Sweet mother of God, ‘holic. What numbers have you done on the lottery 🙂
Steady on, my furry friend. I didn’t have the Grand National winner 🙁
