Pride Restored, But Is It Ade-Bye-Or
May 16th, 2009 by 'holic
As performances go, that one was beyond reproach. Manchester United are worthy champions, of that there is no question, and congratulations go to them. They will, however, know that they came so very close to being taken to the final weekend.
United’s nerves were perhaps apparent in the opening moments when Ronaldo was put clear on the right hand side but he surprisingly opted to cut back and cross, rather than make an attempt on goal. A couple of wasted free-kicks aside his only contributions thereafter were straight from the School of Dramatic Arts.
Arsenal controlled the football in both halves and unfortunately wasted the best chances to break the deadlock. A quarter of an hour or so in it was van Persie who sadly misjudged a header from Arshavin’s pinpoint cross.
It would be wrong not to mention the impressive performance at centre-back of Alexandre Song, surprisingly preferred to Mikael Silvestre after Johan Djourou was ruled out by injury. The defence was not subjected to intense pressure, but that made concentration more vital as United’s rare forays were repelled with a degree of calm assurance that has not been apparent in recent weeks.
I was surprised to see Arsenal still on offer at 5/1 at half-time and could not resist having a decent little punt. I had seen nothing in the first-half that suggested United were capable of turning the contest on its head, and I was not wrong. Arsenal continued to hog the ball as United retreated deeper and deeper in numbers.
Six minutes remained when finally we created the best opening of the half, but from the inside-left channel Cesc failed to apply what would have been a deserved finish, and United gratefully ran down the clock.
The ninety minutes of football are likely to be the least reported events of the day. United, for only the second time, received the trophy in front of the Old Trafford faithful. Hopefully we will be given the opportunity to land our second title up there next season. (Will I get a bite on that!)
Arsenal’s team selection will also grab column inches. Perhaps I should say the absence from the squad of Emmanuel Adebayor will be a much-visited subject, particularly when added to his churlish interview on Football Focus, which may well have been a contributory factor to his absence.
Asked where Adebayor was pre-match, Arsene Wenger said rather tersely that he was left out because of a groin strain. I cannot be hypocritical. Prior to the game I had called for him to be left out if he is destined to be playing elsewhere next season. I’m pleased he did not start but would have expected him to be on the bench.
Now the rights and wrongs of the supporters treatment of some players this season will almost certainly become a major issue in the coming days. Despite that it is astonishing to hear a player come out and be openly critical of his club’s fans. Maybe he is attempting to force a move by alienating those who pay his wages. Maybe I am reading too much into his outburst. I think not.
What I do know, and have said before, is that I would love to have the Adebayor that we had before last summer. He was an improving player who gave one hundred percent every time he pulled on the shirt. The word on the street is that he was all but a Milan player last summer before Berlusconi insisted his club buy Ronaldinho instead. He is ending the season as he started it, linked with a big money move, be it to Milan or Chelsea.
Has the situation reached the stage where a move would be best for all concerned? There is a risk that he will go elsewhere, rediscover his enthusiasm, and return to haunt Arsenal. There is also the possibility that a large fee would enable us to strengthen the squad a little further than we had imagined this summer.
I’m just a little sad it came to this. He must be such a sensitive soul?

first drink!
surely not!
i’ll take whatever the barman’s having?
a great write up holic. i think u got it bang on! i must be one of the few who still think ade will be a loss, obviously the circus that surrounded last summer with him had a longer lasting effect on his season (in some ways not too distant from a certain TH14)
it will be interesting to see where this goes like you say, i have no doubt in which direction this will go in your blog though 😉
shame we didn’t quite make it count today, but i suppose that is the reality of our season
i still feel there are plenty of positives to take, onwards and upwards guys!
Great job at the back today!
I’m never ever even remotley scared when Gibbs touches the ball which is strange given his age and (lack of) experience. Best thing being he seems to be a great weapon in attack as well, very much winger-like (which is not strange). Great job Gibbs, you’ve been forgiven for your slip already, but I’ll forgive you double.
Finally, there is the commitment I was hoping to see! Midfield players working hard to win the ball, back-line pressing aggressively. We still don’t really play with total commitment up front, and still lack some running there to create chances and not start passing the ball side-ways but hey, it’s against ManUre and you don’t really want to take too many chances against them with hard passes I guess because they are very good on the counter. It’s hard to find the balance there. We did a good job all in all.
Most importantly – this is just one game and we need to keep it up. The next game and the next season. Against ManUre and against Birmingham City. Against big and small. Give me more of this, cheers, and we’ll find the confidence to start running for real up front and then we’ll have the opportunity for the harder through-balls and give us that last bit of mobility that is needed to score against teams like ManUre.
Got a feeling Bendts would have been better in the hole or up front, and regarding Arshavin playing on the left flank, well, it’s not really a problem when we get our passing game going with players interchanging. But at the moment he does get a bit lost.
Oh well, thanks Arsenal, you did play for pride!
I’ll be sad to see Adebayor go if he does but it’s looking increasingly likely. His has been an impressive success story and I think last season was hugely impressive on his behalf, and he has scored some absolutely cracking goals. I’m also somewhat sympathetic of his quest for money, or at least I can understand it, given the impoverished background he comes from and the need he must feel to support his family. I don’t think he’s worthy of the hatred he receives, and he’s been receiving it for a long time, even last season, so I can understand his frustration to a degree. It can’t make things easy for him.
I’m also reluctant to level charges against any of our players being lazy, whether they appear it or not, and I don’t like to call him lazy just because he doesn’t chase lost causes (an analysis of Barcelona in the Guardian the other day said they conserve energy despite defending from the front by only running when it’s necessary… that didn’t really apply to chasing down balls that a keeper is always going to get but you can see what I’m getting at).
Anyway, he seems like a nice guy but he seems to be a case study in the alienation felt by modern fans with their team’s players. Ironic in a way because Adebayor comes from a poverty that hardly any at the Emirates have ever known, I imagine. Incidentally, I completely agree with his statements in the final few seconds of the interview, though they’re hardly unique to him.
Anyhoo it seems like this is all leading up to a move away for him. Should he move I’d really like us to use the money to get Benzema. Not exactly everyone’s idea of experience, but with an underwhelming season behind him it’s an opportunity to seize on a very special talent at a reasonable price (a la Nasri last summer).
He can leave for all I care. They boo him because he shows no heart and is not willing to work hard. I dont hear Torres or Drogba complaining about playing upfront by themselves. He refuses to be critical of himself and instead believes that people boo him when he does not score and cheer him when he scores when we as fans just want him to put effort into his game.
Many will dismiss our performance today given that United only needed the point, but I think it illustrates AW’s point that we’re not too far behind the champions. Either way it was the required response after the horrors of last week and a sneaked win would hardly have flattered us on a day when United failed to get a single shot on target.
As far as Adebayor is concerned, it does look as though he’s on the way out. Probably for the best all things considered, but nobody should be suprised if he goes on to be a success elsewhere. He was never as bad or as lazy as many fans would have you believe and we should be careful that his example doesn’t set a precadent of turning on our own players. The same fans who are now behind Bendtner were subjecting him to ridiculous abuse half way through the season. Likewise the month or so where Eboue was subject to horrible abuse all over the blogs reflects poorly on all of us.
We’ve had a tough season, the media wrote us off for 4th place and we’ve had more injuries to deal with than any other top 4 club. Of course I’m disappointed and of course I expect more, but right now proper Gooners need to close ranks.
Much better today I thought. The only thing missing was the goal to win it. Alex Song and Gibbs were stand out in the back and Denilson and Nasri in midfield done particularly good jobs. Nasri showed he’s much better in an advanced role and while I think Walcott has had a good season he is just all pace and hasn’t a fraction of the tech ability of Nasri.
Also I see Edin Dzeko scored another hattrick for Wolfsburg today. Surely if Ade leaves this summer then we should sign this guy. He’s a goal machine and would fit perfectly within our team. Sign him Zapata and either Inler or Alonso and let Ade and Silvest leave and thats us done and ready to challenge on all fronts next season.
I’ve just watched that interview and it doesn’t look good for AFC.
He seems to have expired as an Arsenal Player. Last season he began in the shadow of Henry and he came out wanting to receive the kind of adoration we gooners have been showering on Henry all those years. And he did a very good job of it. In RvP’s absence he led the line beautifully, was described by Rio Ferdinand as the hardest Striker he had faced and he banged in the goals.
BUT, then came the summer, Flamini left, Gilberto left and Hleb left. I don’t think Wenger realised the destructive effect those players leaving would have on the rest of the squad. If he had done he might have offered Flamini a better offer to keep him, or held onto Gilberto a bit longer.
The whole Adebayor to Milan saga was such a mess. Adebayor doesn’t strike me as the smartest of people and he said all the wrong things at the wrong times and I honestly think he doesn’t get why we were so pissed off by it.
In that interview he talked about he doesn’t get the same love from the fans as last season. Well sure that’s obvious as he hasn’t played anywhere near as well. But the worrying thing is that he said he doesn’t believe he’ll EVER get the same love from the fans.
THAT for me proves he has given up as an Arsenal player.
He basically said “they won’t appreciate me when i play well and score so why should i bother?”.
Wenger needs to do some serious man-management here. If Ade HAS given up then he needs to be sold ASAP and not in a long drawn out saga that gets all the players depressed and makes them start doubting all sorts of things.
But if he feels Adebayor can come out of this slump and that the fans will love him again he must work hard to get the player to believe and the fans to believe.
well said aus. i like benzema too but i would imagine if carlos tevez leaves united (as he pretty much stated in the post match celebrations?) he will be on the top of the Manure shopping list, as he has been on their ‘radar’ so we hear for some time. which then leads to the next problem in the “potential” loss of adebayor, certainly if you are talking about “marquee” signings as replacements, the wage demands of these replacements. i was surprised we got arshavin! my point being – easy to say “get rid of adebayor”, not so easy to find a 20+ goal a season striker, that every other club won’t be after. an interesting summer awaits
buy muntari and raul albiol?
I have one question about the game today. It was obvious Man U were nervous after the first 15mins yet Wenger persisted with a 4-5-1 formation that was never going to trouble Man U’s back 4 too much.
WHY oh WHY oh WHY then does he sub Arshavin and Nasri and keep Diaby on the pitch?
Why not take off Diaby for Walcott, push Fabs back alongside Denilson, move Nasri to the left and Arshavin up front with RvP?????
For just the last 15 mins? We had nothing to lose yet he didn’t play the team most likely to score in the formation they’re most comfortable with!!!
The one BIG doubt i have gotten from this season is with Wenger’s team selection.
In the past when the fans and critics were astonished by his selection he was proved right and we were shown how little we know about football.
Nowadays when he does it we are still left scratching our heads at the final whistle!!!
FA Cup Semi Final v Chavs, Champions Lge Semi v Man U, today?!
We are a 4-4-2 team and the only time 4-5-1 worked properly was in the Champions League. Wenger had better buy a player who can allow the team to go back to their natural formation.
I too would love to see the old Ade of last season again! And although putting as much blame as he did on the supporters is a little misguided Ade has a point that it’s not right for the fans to boo their own players. The treatment of him and (particularly) Eboue was disgraceful this season. No matter what happened over the summer, to boo your own players is such a myopic pig-headed thing to do and shows just how spoilt football fans can be. Oh well 2009/10 here we come.
the comments and body language in the interview just had ‘goodbye’ written all over it from ade. shame really. he could’ve made something with the same desire he showed last season but then again when i heard of his and Flamini’s antics with regards to securing more money i was quite disgusted (they used to drop notes on each other and dance under it) lol. funny really. he willl not be missed if we sign someone of quality and hopefully not promote from within. also the fact that ade was left out today seems to say a lot. anyways goodbye and good luck. damn ronaldo is one cocky and provocative cunt http://www.101greatgoals.com/videodisplay/2534515/
Good job holic, the season is already gone,so its now time 4 the manager and the board to sit down and assess what went wrong and where then start preparing against next season, i think positively about this side, we need some reinforcements up front, middle of the pack and centre back and they have to be all experienced and not experimental players, bcos its been long since we tasted the sweetness of a trophy. The laurel cabinet of the Emirates is stil empty. We are tired of watchin others lifting while we too deserve to. As for Ade i symphatize with the guy, he has tried his best but his season was hampered with injuries thus making him on and off form, but i think the offer from those big clubs shows what we have so we may not value him until he leave and start haunting us as you stated. So we should give him one more chance to prove himself b4 callin 4 his money but if he decide to go so be it, Arsenal isnt built around one man. Keep the faith Up GOONERS.
11. David – i couldn’t agree more regarding diaby, i am not his biggest fan. today though i feel le boss took arshavin off because it wasn’t one of his better games, he looked tired and at points it seemed as though his touch had deserted him a bit
12. pooner – well said son, i couldn’t agree more with you.
…. gosh i am going out on a limb here … but fuck it let’s take a little leap of faith
i think the point adebayor misses is that the fans don’t hate him. they hate the fact that he has had a poor season (like many of you have said over these pages all season long) and also the fact that when a player like him is so “press hungry” it irritates us. yes, it is not his fault that his name is mentioned in the papers with other clubs, but so is every other player’s at arsenal, and every other big club, do we see them all giving up and taking the lazy mentality i don’t think so. After the debarcle of last summer we expected “especially” more from him, to show us that he wanted to be here and i don’t think we have seen enough of it at all this year
i am not a boo-er, i want adebayor to stay as i believe he has the potential to be a great player, we saw that in a large capacity last season, but on the flipside with this guy i can’t help but feel there is always going to be some sort of “drama”
Good review as always `holic. We should take some pride in the performance today.Watching on TV you could hear the away fans getting louder and louder.Once again they did the club proud.
It would be lovely to play at Old Trafford with a ref who was even handed. Some of the bookings were ridiculous.Ronaldo falls over if anybody looks at him and time and time again the referees fall for it.
Good performances from Song,Toure and DEnilson and a special word for Gibbs whose recovery since his mistake in the semi-final has been quite remarkable.
United were the best team and deserved to win the league but Patrice Evra and Ronaldo can go and fuck themselves.
why all the debate on here about adebayor saying that its a shame…i’d love him to go to man u or chelsea…or if not there, anywhere else…..for the simple fact that he is not good enough, work rate or not…yes he scored 30+ goals last yr, but he missed twice as many….any half decent striker who played in that team last yr would have got at least that….keep bendtner…who’s scoring record per minutes is very good, for us and denmark…and he’s only 20, and get ade out to anyone who’d take him…i’d be amazd and delighted if we got £15m for him, let alone the 20 or 30 talked about last summer…
ps. i never have or would boo him or any of ours, including eboue…who’s looks a great attacking option when playing back in a full back role…but i just don’t want ade at our great club…he’s a mercanry without the talent to back it up
I don’t have a problem with Adebayor leaving, as long as:
1. We get decent money for him
2. He goes overseas
3. He is replaced
Good performance from the lads today, pity we didn’t get the winner that we deserved overall.
Best have a pint of cider ‘holic. Ta.
Something that is rarely mentioned with African players : they come from very, very poor backgrounds. Only those who have travelled in Africa off the tourist routes will understand this. Think of Slumdog Millionaires (ok, that was India!) but realise that they sanitised the squalor in the film. Shanty towns in Africa make Slumdog’s look like middle England!
It must be very difficult not to let this fame and fortune go to their heads. Some (like Song) manage it; others (like our former player Anelka) struggle.
Not an excuse but possibly a valid reason. Much like booze and gambling have ruined a good few English players over the years.
We know he is a very good player but maybe it will take him a few years to grow-up.
Anelka is from the outskirts of Paris, MikeE!
Anelka is an African?
No wonder when I met him he asked for my sort-code.
MikeE – I don’t think this is an excuse for Adebayor’s laziness this season. If I could believe we’d get the old Adebayor back (workrate & goals) then great, but I think he’ll become another Hleb & Flamini in the summer.
Todays performance was great, shame about not finding a winner although we were very close.
Now onto adebayor, he is a great player when he wants to be but it’s all to do with his Attitude that makes him what we have seen from him this season, with that fat contract he knows he’s made it and doesn’t need to work hard, overall I appreciate ades contribution to the club but I think now is the time for this relationship to be severed and I hope we get a thick wad of cash from the chavs or from abu dhaby manc citeh.
I believe this team is 5 signings away from world football domination
2 from Stuart Taylor , sahko, hangeland or chielnili
1 from flamster or de rossi
The rw from standard liege and
1 of povregbank or crouch yep u heard me crouch would do the job, a proven striker, good work rate and would get everything we send him up top and we can do it by even selling 2 players ade and diabolicAl
“……i can’t help but feel there is always going to be some sort of “drama”….”
Therein lies the problem. This guy had a problem with the Togo FA and had former coach Keshi sacked. I don’t need to say anymore about the problems he had at Monaco before coming to Arsenal. Adebayor is a controversial person full stop. He can be a good player but his problem is him. He does not see anything he does wrong. He is almost delusional about “how good he is” and doesn’t strike me as a person who will eventually set the world alight. It is a bit unfair to blame him for everything he does but we need to look deeper than the surface.
I cannot hide my face in the sand and not say how disgusting it is how Arsene Wenger sucks up to him. His relationship with Wenger makes him believe his own hype. Wenger, for me is the one to blame for saying one thing out in the open and doing another behind closed doors. Adebayor is not the main problem at Arsenal but he is a significant problem. In most important games, Arsenal pass pass and pass without any end product. What gets me so angry is the fact that “all season” we attack the opposition by passing wide to the right for Sagna to cross into the box. The only player we expect at the end of such a cross is Adebayor. How do we then score when we have a player who is more pre-occupied about his fans booing him than getting on the end of crosses or putting in his best?
The moment a player feels: “why bother…?” He needs to go.
Unfortunately, Arsenal have suffered too long for another season like this one, where Adebayor becomes the subject of boos again. I cannot see the fans changing, because they are all tired of winning nothing and turn their wrath on players who come across as lazy.
In reality, Arsenal create a lot of chances and this side is only 5 majors players short of being rock solid. We need 2 goal machines, who will scare the living daylights out of anyone (David Villa & Pavel Pogrebnyak), 2 centrebacks (Hangeland & Alex) and a tall solid enforcer like YaYa Toure. Sell Adebayor.
With Pavel very good in the air and having better upper body strength than Drogba, we wouldn’t miss Adebayor. We certainly need David Villa to form a partnership with Arshavin in the final third. Next season is about giving Arshavin that free role (the number 10) he truly deserves. Imagine having a free Arshavin and a mobile David Villa in your team?
The last thing I will say is that bringing in these 5 players or their kind, will give us room to widen our approach. We can’t keep relying on Walcott on the right of our attack. We need to have players who can attack from the wings. Having Villa in our team will create a lot of space for others to exploit. We simply aren’t dangerous enough going forward.
the only point he has is that our fans boo our own players, which in my view is a total disgrace and it should never happen again.
Aus and Typical, Very fine posts. One of the great things about cultural diversity is that it accentuates the differences in the way that people from different cultural backgrounds think and behave. I’ve been to Togo. Poverty is endemic. The majority live in slum dwellings. Despite that they are a very proud and forthright people. I didn’t see the interview holic refers to but in it, I expect Ade spoke as a Togolese and was true to his cultural heritage. I’m sure he told it as he saw it.
I can certainly relate to his frustration. It’s pretty dire to be in the ground when players like nick and ade are booed ONTO the field. If I was Cesc or RvP that treatment would have a pretty weighty impact on my desire to stick around.
Hello BtM, Good to see you here again. I take your points about his background on board, but I suspect Ade has been around long enough to know that what he is saying there will do nothing to heal the wounds that he inflicted last summer.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/jun/28/arsenal.premierleague?gusrc=rss&feed=football
If he says once more he never said anything about leaving Arsenal I think I will finally lose all patience with him. I mean it when I say I would be happy for him to stay if we get the old Ade back, but I think it is there for all to see that he appears to be angling for a get-out. That is sad.
agree with everything aus says. good luck to adebayor, i hope he does well whether he stays with us or goes. i’m one of the ones who has been far more appalled by our fans than by our results or individual performances this season, not to say i’m happy about any of it. but results change, players come and go, but the fans stick around in the main. i’d like to see us have a little bit more resilience, wit, patience, and perspective next season. and for arsene to get a new centre back.
F*ck a duck, Gooners! I just can’t figure you all out. Any time I come on here you’re whining your little Gooner hearts out that you need more experience. “that’s the problem” you whine “we need more experience!”.
So old Adebayor plays in three Epl seasons and stars in two successive CLs. Then f*ck me, you whine “now that he’s got some experience, he’s not trying. Get rid of him”. Ain’t you lot noticed that more experienced players don’t go chasing lost causes just to look good?
Us Chavs is rubbin’ our hands. See we’ve got two great lumps of meat up front we’re going to dump at the end of the year. Yeah Sulk n Dogberath. Together they ain’t scored as many as Adebayor over the last two seasons. Laziest pair on the planet. Don’t try. Can’t lead. Useless. Worst of all we need some entertainment from a big player with skill as well as strength.
Now. I have to tell you. Players who can average 25 goals a season, score with both feet and the head ain’t easy to find. When you do, even if they REALLY don’t try they fetch 33 mill like Berbatoss.
And here you Gooners are. Looking to ditch Adebayor, some of you for 15 mill! Can’t wait to see him at the bridge. Love the way he moves defended around and opens up spaces for others. That’s why you Gooners have scored so many this season. And, he was out for three months.
Never mind Goonerd, when we win the league next season n Ade gets his golden boot, we’ll raise our glasses of Tolly, Grand Marnier and Brasso and drink to your despair.
With all due respect Bill 😉
If he had scored anywhere near twenty-five goals this season he would not be getting booed and we would not be considering letting him go.
Let me go back to what I said about him back last June…
“It would be a blessing if reports of offers around the £25 million mark were true. I don’t think anybody would expect us to turn down that amount of money for a player who has to prove this season he is not a one season wonder.”
He hasn’t proved himself to be anything other than a one season wonder – yet.
You say about ADE background & heritage, very proud you are having a
laugh,do you believe he is the only under-privileged player to pull on our great shirt,he should show pride & fight when he plays not sulk, and be thankful he is in such a wonderful place in his career and thank the club & fans for the opportunity to EARN an absolute fortune each week that other people can only dream of.I am glad to say our other
players are not like him………
I’m travelling so on my iPhone ‘Holic. Slow work with the one thumb typing. I feel in my water that Ade is gone. A big loss from a young squad that has been developing well together I feel.
I don’t expect to see a big name forward come in behind him. Ryan babel for 10 mill is a rumour that has some credibility. Eduardo and Rosicky will be back too. But who’s going to dance with Eboue?
Beggin’ your pardon, Mr ‘Holic. In me simple chafver way I was takin last years 30 adding 18 for this year and making an annual average of 25. Old ade had three months off this year or the average would have been higher no doubt. Never mind, once he comes to the Bridge Roman’s crack medical team sort him out n he’ll be back to 30.
For all your domination, VDS’s only save came in the last 5mins, a draw was a perfect reflection.
good blog
but looks like we are going to lose RVP as well
adebayor’s departure is imminent now, what wenger need do now is to find a replacement for him which by all means is not goin to be easy.
strikers of ade’s built and potential, potential to score wonder goals, are very rare to find.but one thing is sure whatever he says hes not committed to arsenal by heart, which is reflected by his workrate in last 2-3 months.he has to go
bye bye adebayor……..
So AW says there is improvement in the game agaisnt MU. Yeah we saw it but the gunners did not pose any particular threat except for Fab’s shot.I’m afraid it’s the same old Arsenal playing beautiful passing game, abeauty in motion but unlikely to get goals and prizes.
AW has to stop deluding himself and find out the fastest andshortest way to goal.As it is the gunners take a long time to unleash a shot. Part of the problem being the great number of passes. In short, make it short, incisive and explosive other wise it will be a case of I told you so.
It’s Diarra all over again, just on a bigger scale. I’ll miss the ade of last season (as I do now), but i’m not sure many gooners will be particularly fussed at him jumping ship – especially if we manage to rake in a respectable sum. Losing RVP would be a blow as he seems to be dedicated to the cause, but he simply isnt effective enough. He’s one of my favourite players to watch play, and he has moments of brilliance but his role in the team in unsure – not a good way to be after so many years here. He also got knocked off the ball far too much, was too slow, and not clinical enough in the air… having someone like Tevez play his role today would have worked a treat. We need new signings. I just hope we dont sign another oldy, like the big foetus that is slyvestre.
Great post ‘Holic, a little disappointed by the result though (even if proud of the team) but it’s really not our season.
ChelseaBilly: some players are divas (not a negative judgement, just a fact), take Drogba for example. Some others are fragile creatures that require a lot of nurturing, warm feelings etc: look at Malouda. Some just feel they don’t fit, want more or just something different etc, look at Robben. It just happens that Adebayor is all of this in one man. We all would love for him to stay and rediscover his lethal finishing but the writing’s on the wall: it won’t happen at Arsenal by forcing him to stay. It will only lead us (and him) to more bad feelings and problems which we don’t need right now.
That said money is obviously a motivating factor for him, but topping 80K a week after a 25+ mils transfer may not attract a lot of suitors on his current form. If it turns out he is “stranded” at Arsenal one more season that could well remotivate him to attract better bids the following summer. We’ll see.
Since you plan to write on blogs and fans soon, I’ll keep my arguments for that post. I just wanted to note that I did not put GoodPlaya in the same sewer as Arseblogger (and Gunnerblogger), someone else did and I disagree.
Oh and if the FA imposes homegrown players quotas like it was mentioned again this week, we’ll dominate the league for years to come like no other club has done before.
What has van persie’s worj rate been this season. Every1 keeps talkin abt ade’s work rate. He has scored 2 goals more the ade ask urself hw many penaties he has score. If ur want to get on ade’s back then ur’ll shud get on RvP as well. Against man u he was pure shit did nothing he aint no foward he is a winger that a fact.
I just read nevin’s article comparing MU’s style and Arsenal’s passing game.i fully agree with him.Short,Fast and Explosive sums up MU’a approach compared to AW’s laboured appoach. I know he is an Chelsea guy and he may want to degrade but results speak for themselves
For many fans calling for injection of a few faces ,don’t forget it takes time for these newcomers to integrate in to the team.Hopeully it won’t take long otherwise the repercussions for a few seasons in the wilderness could be far reaching. At the moment there is long waiting list.If the team underperforms and is unable to sustain a challenge
there could be gaping holes in the ES. The waiting list will shrink dramatically and the board currently tight fisted may decide to giev the manager AW or whoever it maybe 100 million to spend. The damage will have been done and Arsenal will be one the midtable teams and struggle to go to the big 4 .
Of cousre the is not doom and gloom but it’s possible.
any1 got other links to the Ade interview on football focus? i don’t think the video is available to non-UK viewers
While I’ve been frustrated with Ade’s regression this year compared to last… I’m far *more* frustrated with our own supporters. Why can’t the home fans be the same as the traveling supporters? Why can’t they support the team — the constant moaning, whinging, booing… It’s supremely discouraging. You support the team come hell or high water, full stop. Despite our history as one of the pillars of the English game, you look at the scousers and the way they support their club, and it puts us to shame. We deserve support like they get. We need a bit more Concordia and that will make Victoria a lot more likely, doesn’t everyone see that? Does it take a supporter from across the pond to point out the obvious to all you lucky enough to attend matches at the Grove each week???
Walcott isnt n e thing but a 100metre runner… he cant do jack shit apart from running… dont give me the bs abt the villareal goal…even i can score goals like that once in a while… helll i can score better ones… but walcott?? seriously?? all he does is goes for pace… no shot no sense of passing cant cross cant think…
The REFS tend to favour man utd alot… Rooney can swear at the refs alot more than n e one else but gets nothing… Tevez should have been booked clearly atleast once but nasris first foul earns him a card…. alot of manure plans shud have been booked yesterday but none of them got a card… they should make the league fair… why does man utd get all the fair treatment.. why do they get all the dubious penalties??/ why? might as welll not play the league and award it 2 them all the time.. its amazing how many penalties they get and points they pick up due to the refs
3 points against the tittinghum… 3 against bolton at the start of the season… and so many more…
Adebayor should leave seriously his getting annonyin as hell… the amount of chances he gets(open net vs chelsea even a few yrs ago against bolton in the fa cup if i m not mistaken ) and his finishing isnt that great..look at him shoot outside the box… where does the ball end up?? not even close 2 the goal… its wasting possesion… look at the likes of henry and bergkamp they never used 2 waste the ball.. .and ya they dont just stick the ball 2 their feet and go side ways… they move up… look at torres…. u think u can compare ulgybayor with him?? and look at rooney… they can play by themselves and still score hatricks.. but adebayor all he does is staying offside and whinning like a bitch..
i think walcott no matter how much i want him 2 be a good player i dont see it happening… he cant shoot.. adebayor cant do jack.. silvestre was a waste of money… i heard we want chiellini from Juve… and no matter how much i like clichy i think gibbs can replace him now…. might as well trade for him if we get a good centre back and also a good DM and a world class striker after we sell Ade than will be set…
Look at us we were crossing the ball while we only have one person in the box who isnt that tall even.. we were doing the same vs bolton when we won 3-1 and none of the goals came from the head and ya bolton are one of the tallest teams in the league… i dont knowwhat wenger teaches these kids… maybe he teaches them more of accounting and profit making thats y they wanna leave
All this hating Ade is just just plain rubbish…
Media spin….if its done it to all our players…Cesc, Hleb, Van Persie, Pink Boots, Theo… and Arshavin already and he just came!
Doesnt suprise me that they did their shite against Ade and its working…how fuckin controllin are the media against Arsenal fans?
I dont understand where all this hatred is coming from…He already explained that he wasnt happy with the position he was playing in the 4-5-1 this season and it takes a massive toll on him physically
Which one of our players is the dogs bollocks playing alone as a striker? It sure as shite wasnt Van Persie…and its sure as shite isnt Pink Boots or else he wont be played out wide.
Well you heard it from the hourses mouth…it makes Sense….you play a 4-5-1 in the CL…with Ade up top by himself…play another home game 4-5-1…
Takes a massive toll on him physically..which striker can hold up play succesfully in a 4-5-1 for 10 games at a stretch?

I didn’t manage to see the game yesterday as i was on a plane, but intrigued by the performance of song at CB. I’ve personally never had the absolute faith that he’d make it at CB due to the fact that he lacks height and pace. However do you think that his defensive acumen can overcome both these things?
Jimmy, song was very good yesterday, his improvement this season is remarkable and what an asset to the squad he is. Gibbs was also a shining light, 19 years of age and going to be Englands next left back. The worry for me is that he is obviously still behind Clichy (my favourite current Gooner) and at some point a decision will have to be made by the boss. One or the other will be sacrificed and that is just a horrible feeling. I’d love to see Gibbs playing in front of Clichy next season but with Arshavin now filling the wide left spot I doubt it will happen.
As for Ade, there seems to be some heavy editing going on in the BBC interview. I wonder if he has been taken out of context. However, regardless if he has or not his comments in any context say to me he has gone. I started the season supporting the guy, I’d never boo one of our own but I can’t see a way back for him now. I think for all concerned it’s best he goes. Ade seems to have given up I’m afraid, he must shoulder a large proportion of the blame himself but regardless the poisonous atmosphere we have seen at the Em’s must be irradicated.
I read the article by Alan Hansen . He is a former Liverpool player and critical analyst. I couldn’t agree more with him on the playing style of the big four. Whereas the other three can modify their style,Arsenal/Aw insist on pretty soccer.
That to me is part of the problem affecting Arsenal .
The one dimensional style with endless passing can be effectively neutralised by the red faced /nosed cunt and Chelsea.AH goes on to say playing /winning ugly is alien to AW.
I’m afraid he is so right.IF AW refuses to embrace other styles I’m afraid Arsenal will conitnue in the rut.this is only one problem affecting Arsenal.
To blame Ade for all Arsenal’s problems is very short-sighted. He hasn’t had the service that he had last season and has been asked to play up front on his own far too much. I don’t believe those who boo him are real Arsenal fans.. you should never boo your own players at a match. What good does that do? If you want to see a player who is a real disgrace.. look no further than Bentner – a pathetic drunken yob – perhaps he has alot in common with the boo boys!
Hi rosicknote,
Sorry, have looked around and cannot find the interview elsewhere yet. I’ll keep checking and amend the link if it turns up later.
My apologies to non-UK readers.
Adebyebye needs to go. Despite the odd moment of brilliance he is too inconsistent, and a loose cannon. We have Eduardo back next year, Arshavin can play in the middle as support striker, Vela looks good when he plays centrally, and Walcott was supposedly bought to be another central striker (a-la TH14). Add Bendtner and that makes 4 players that can act as support for RvP. Lets bank the Adebayor transfer fee and spend it on a decent defensive midfielder.
IF Rosicky can get fit, we have him, Nasri, Denilson, Song, etc to support Fab4.
I am probably dreaming – but if we bought a world class keeper and a centre-back, plus a holding midfielder (all of whom were aged 25+) we CAN challenge next year. A big IF mind you !!
Roman’s crack medical team
Did he get this team in after Cuntley joined?
A white wine spritzer please bartend!
Fascinating read has been this thread. I kinda feel Ade has become a victim of circumstances and feel the player is far better than his recent appearances have suggested. On the other hand, history confirms he is a player that brings along with him an awful lot of baggage, therefore needs careful management. If push came to shove, I’d like to see him stay and fulfill his potential.
I won’t be popular for saying this, but yesteredays result was at best academic only. Yes Song was excellent in defence, as was Gibbs. Denilson was excellent too. But I wonder what the result would have been had Man United needed a win to seal the championship? Therein lies the difference between the two teams for me!?!
That said, with a few careful purchases in the close season I have no doubt we will be back up challenging with the best of the rest next season.
Keep the faith fellow Gooners 🙂
Thanks ‘holic. Been searching it everywhere elsewhere also. If you do find it pls let me know. I’ve subscribed to the comments feed.
I really want to watch his interview. Thanks again. Cheers
*everywhere also
just read the interview posted here from someone saying that adebayor wanted to leave and i stll dont see where he said he was going to milan .he did say teams were in for him but he did not say he was definately going to sign for them and him leaving was the spin put into it by the guy who wrote the article he said he was going to talk about his contract and who would not read reports today that van p is on 35,000 a week well to be honest that is low for a player like him injuries or not also arsenal play hard ball over contracts why do we hate the players when they are fighting thier own corners.adebayor will allways be an asset to anyclub he plays for arsenal or whoever and if so many other clubs allways want him he cant be rubish except to his own fans.
if ade is off i dont want just cash to replace him because i know wenger and the board will be reluctant to spend all of it. if its milan we should ask for ronaldinho in part of the deal, or maybe flamini.
@Goonerholic
Regarding Adebayor
Whatever his weekly wage, Adebayor stayed at Arsenal for less money than he could have got if he had moved. He does want to stay, what he also wants is to be loved.
My impression of the BBC Sport interview was of a man who is tired, dispirited and wounded. He said that he feels that whatever he does, the fans will not be behind him – and that is demotivating. It would be for anybody, however much they were getting paid.
What bothers me about all the hate is that some players get it and others who have done the same, don’t. Cesc has had a poor season by his standards, before and after his injury, but fans have not turned on him, even though he was in talks with Real Madrid a couple of seasons ago.
I really, really hope and pray that we do not lose Adebayor. ChelseaBilly outlined his attributes above – and I’d add that he is a leader as well. All the “trouble” he is supposed to have caused with the Togo FA has been down to him standing up for the rights of the players, making sure they got the bonuses they were promised, proper and safe transport to matches, etc. He has a strong personality and at the moment he is the ONLY forward we have who can lead the line. He is the main component of our Plan B. Players like Adebayor don’t grow on trees. It won’t kill any of us to ignore personal feelings and cherish him, if that’s what he needs in order to do well. We’ve got 99% of a fantastic squad – let’s add to it, not break it up.
I’ve just seen that pritpal wants Flamini back. Yet some people are excoriating Ade for being mercenary?
The other thing about Ade is that when he leaves, a few years down the track I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out there was an Anelka-esque situation, whereby his influences (in Anelka’s case, his brothers) were pissing in his ear and giving him poor advice.
Pride restored ?
Oh yes, one game against a manc team in 3rd gear makes up for yet another rubbish season and 3 wimpish semi final game performances.
I don’t rate you goonerholic, I’ve heard your on the the arsecast. You sound like an old geezer that is happy to just poodle along as long as we get 4th place. I’m sure there is a space for you on the Arsenal board, because you’d certainly fit right in.
That’s your prerogative, GG. You seem to have made your mind up you know a lot about me.
You should be aware though that there is a difference between being ‘happy to poodle along’, and throwing my toys out of the pram because daddy took all my titles away until I learned to appreciate them a little bit more.
Story tells it that wenger has 13 million to spend on players this summer because of the wages that wenger needs to pay to keep the likes of almunia and fabregas etc…..!!!
and van persie rejected a contract!!!
so we face the realistic prospect of losing van persie and adebayor this summer, but the good side of that is have up to cash to spend in the summer. But the problem is now is we have to replace adebayor, we have already replaced van persie with arshavin, and now we need to buy a striker, a defensive midfielder,
a goalkeeper (cheap)2nd choice, and a towering sol campbell like centre back!!!
this will mean that: (IN)
Gk: Chris kirkland: 3.5 million
CB: Ricardo carvalho : 13 million
DM: Yaya Toure: 13.5 million
CF: Mario Gomez: 15 million
= 45 Million
(Out)
Fabianski: Loan
Senderos: 5 Million
Toure: 9.5 million
Diaby: loan
Van persie: 20 million
Adebayor: 15 million
=
49.5 Million
well said gozza, ure da only one that makes sense around here, but why has van persie rejected a new deal.
And i do not think that wenger has the balls to sign carvalho.
imagine that yaya youre n fabregas in midfield!!
Gk: Almunia
RB: Sagna
CB: Carhalho
CB: Gallas
LB: Clichy
RM: Walcott
DM: Yaya Toure
CM: Fabregas
LM: Nasri
SS: Arshavin
CF: Mario Gomez
Subs: Kirkland, Silvestre, Bentner, Vela, Zhirkov, Denilson, Rosicky
well said goonerdreffy 4 in 6 out in your crazy way of making sense .too many prats with ps3s and x boxes
thanks tony !
but what do you make of adebayor and van persie going this summer?
is it a good thing that we can get the money to plash on defenders, or is it a bad thing that we will lack fire power next season?
The bitter reality is that despite how good RvP is he really dont fits into this squad.when i heard the rumour that rvp rejects new contract first i feel worried but then i realised how good it can be.
he dont fits into this team,he plays behind main striker and this posi can be filled by nasri and arshavin.
but only problem remains that we cant lose our 2 main strikers in one season.either we have to hold on to Ade for 1 more season or we have to buy a immediate replacement in form of tavez or villa,or our next season will be a complete disgrace
absolutely spot on!!
get rid of rvp & get a defensive midfielder
get rid of toure and get a real centre back
get rid of adebayor and get villa
i agree with you,but in toure we have no prob,he is rock solid.
we can just use our transfer kitty to buy a world class cb.
as u said RvP could easily finance us a dm.
ade+sendros(+troure)==villa or tevez.
go gunners get them
dryfish ordreffy or whatever i do not agree with you i was being ironic but judging by your comments you are too thick to understand.
im willing to learn how to drive and drive adebayor to the airport myself. he is a disgrace.
gozza, with all due respoect…… this isnt fantasy football
10 cents says gomez will be as effective as sergei rebrov in the premier league
if rvp rejects a contract, no ones gonna pay 20 mill for him if they can get him the following season for free
dont think kirkland wants to warm the bench….he would have stayed at liverpool….
i think you are right dublin, and rais i also like the tevez idea (he could be just the “hulk” we need), but i think what we have to consider this time around in the transfer window that we will probably need to be in the market for english players, and this “may” have an influence on some of our signings. especially if the 6and5 (or whatever variation they decide is coming into effect for start of ’10 season)
what have we got 2 english starting players? walcott and gibbs? (and one due to injury – though i know some will argue he deserves more)
i may be wrong? i just feel this may have a slight effect? we have already seen gary cahill mentioned a lot in the UK media, and i have no doubt that if newcastle go down we would make a bid for “long time wenger target”? stephen taylor, and guess what they are both english!
**actually noticed yesterday though that liverpool only fielded 2 english players also in gerrard and carragher**
yes i think we need to add, i think you are right about some players that have been thrown into the dissection, surprised no-one has mentioned selling traore i imagine he will definately be sold. gibbs has now become a ready-made replacement for clichy.
i wouldn’t argue with senderos or diaby, but kolo toure! he is our longest standing player now i believe? and probably our best defender, i know he has made some mistakes but believe it or not players are actually allowed to suffer dips in form (see anelka and torres at points this season), i think we need to concentrate on trying to keep our good players here first before worrying about who is coming in? this is a good group of players – still quite a new group, that have had not a bad season.
but what do i know ….. i don’t boo our team, i like arsene wenger and i actually quite like our squad and players?
ps. i know that neutron jack and jay simpson (and a few more that ‘holic knows more about than me are likely to start featuring more in coming seasons) … i just think if they bring this rule in we will have to start thinking about it today.
(- holic i wrote my post much better first time… but it kept bouncing me out of your server and i lost it? strange? shame! they are never as good 2nd time around 😉 – maybe too early for the ‘holic bar?)
I’ll open the bonnet when I get a chance tg. Could be my aggressive spam filter playing up again. If I find the original I’ll do a little swap, and this post will look bloody stupid.
…but you lot are used to my posts looking bloody stupid, aren’t you?
ah cheers … but no worries ‘holic, i think i managed to re-create the gist, just thought i would let the technical department know
Just as well tg, it’s not in the spam filter.
Must have been a server problem. I’ll keep an eye on things. My hosting costs me over a pound a month, so I’d better make sure I’m getting my moneys worth!
😉
I’ll have a little brandy before I go on my day. Thanks.
Me too, Ollie …
I thought the game on saturday was played like an end-of-season ‘dead-rubber’. Neither team were at it full pelt. If anything we played with more application, but were rarely troubling Manure.
They seemed content playing for a draw!
To be honest I will not be sorry to see Ade go. I am getting sick and tired with players who earn absolute fortunes moaning about silly little things. I have been away so not had a chance to listen to his interview yet, but if he is having a go at the fans then he needs to look at himself very closely. He virtually held the club to ransom in the close season. Wenger has said how disruptive this was. This season he has not produced. Fans can accept players have off days and go through bad spells. What isn’t acceptable is the lack of effort and could not care less attitude.
I would never advocate booing home players. Eboue received some awful treatment this season. The reaction of the crowd that day was understandable. However, the reaction after was one of apology and Eboue has been cheered to the rafters. He will never be the greatest player in the world but will be welcomed with open arms as long as he puts the effort in.
I am getting a bit fed up reading on here from people having a go at the home fans. I am a season ticket holder and take in between 7/10 away games a season. The atmosphere away is fantastic. My opinion of the home crowds this season on the whole have been good. There have been odd times and there will also be those in the crowd who want to have a moan. But generally they have been both encouraging and supportive. Fans pay a lot of money to support their club and are entitled to an opinion. Players that earn more in a week than most fans do in a year should take note. They should realise what a privileged position they are in. As a lifelong fan I can accept off days as I said. I will not accept laziness and players that do not care about the club. If players on 70k a week do not want to play for the club then there’s the door. I do not see why we need to go cap in hand to these people and beg them to stay. This is The Arsenal. They should be kicking down the door to play for the club. Not interested anymore? Then close the door when you leave.
I keep seeing Flamini’s name mentioned on here. Why would we want him back? He was here for 6 seasons and had one decent one. Last year he was full of energy and enthusiasm. He played very well. But he is not the tall commanding midfielder we need. Never will be. And remember, the season before last we could not give him away.
Time to look forward to next season and the future. Just a few additions and replacements for those that leave and we will not be far away.
Keep the faith.
anyone from dublin headed to the stoke game?? me mates in london arent really up for it but the weather here’s been shit and i’d love to say goodbye to beyonce if she’s leaving
Sorry H, but Ade can Bye-bye from me.
I watched him in one of his first games when he came to us, CL qualifier at the Emirates Vs Hamburg ( I think) From 12 yds out, open goal, only the keeper to beat, and blasted it horribly wide. Not even close, wider than the grand canyon. I knew then that he would be useless and was proved right.
The only reason he scored 30 last season was because RvP & Dudu were both injured. Hes crap, hes lazy and hes disloyal. Bye Bye Ade!
second that, disloyal and unable to have big games against big teams. absolutely rubbish over the last month when we really needed big performances. His mind is elsewhere, better to let someone else pay his wages. Hope Eduardo gets the chance to earn his place in the team, there´s a player with the right attitude. Also, he doesn´t need any invitations to score.. he can take a half-chance and make it look easy. He´s got that Robbie Fowler cool in front of goal.
I´d like Walcott to get the chance to play as a forward next year and then we´d be set with Eduardo Persie Walcott Bendtner.. good to go.
Maybe with Simpson as cover for them or someone from the reserves.
Our weakest position for me is centre back.. We need someone who will really give Gallas and Toure a run for their money, someone tall and with a strong character who can organize.
We are very close to the silly season, aka the summer transfer window, and I can`t believe the knives are out for AW again. The shareholder who stood up at the AGM and called Silvestre a geriatric, though essentially correct, should have been more circumspect. While I reserve the right to criticize any player who is consistently not pulling his weight, and I did call Bendtner a useless c**t at one game, it can obviously be counter-productive to the player concerned, though probably not to the extent suggested by AW. While I believe the latest stories linking AW with Real Madrid are just another load of cock, people should be careful what they wish for. We have to believe that he realises where the team has gone wrong and is prepared to finally put it right. At any rate Gazidis seems to be on the case. An nasty article in that paper for little englanders, the Mail on Sunday, states that AW has only £13m to spend on transfers this summer. This doesn`t need more than a nano-seconds worth of thought to be dismissed as mischief-making. Shock waves will have reverberated round the boardroom table when we were 8 points behind Villa, and losing up to £60m in revenue for finishing 5th was a live possibility. With Man City spending big this summer, and the spuds spending their usual £40m+ (to the usual little effect hopefully), the board will realise that we have to kick on to ensure the top four hegemony.
Thanks Bb. You should be wary of anything in the Mail which is, shall we say, ‘sympathetic’ to the views of Red & White Holdings.
…and if any proof of that were required, just look at the shit they are spouting today. While the quality papers, and even the tabloids ponder the Wenger to Real story, only the Daily Heil has a piece that manages to convert the story into an out-and-out attack on the board. They have lambasted the Arsenal directors ever since the departure of Dein, and this should inform your judgement of their bilge.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1184292/Wenger-wobbling–Arsenal-board-want-him.html?ITO=1490
Is it me or is this all getting a little silly? I am getting very board with the shite coming out in the press and from the club. I am a massive Wenger fan and would be one of those that says give him a job for life. But all of this seems a tad childish to me. A few shareholders ruffle a few feathers? So what. They are shareholders and are entitled to their opinion. Then we hear Wenger say he feels he is treated like a murderer. What is that about? Then Hill-Wood is in the papers saying how disgusting it all was that 2/3 shareholders dared to ask some difficult questions. Now it is all over the papers. Arsenal in turmoil. No backing from the board. Wenger off to Madrid etc etc. People are entitled to an opinion. You do not have to agree with it. That is why it is only an opinion. What I do not get is why we have to air it all in public? Why does the manager and members of the board have to criticise the fans in public? Deal with it at the meeting and move on. It all sounds very childish to me.
I have now listened to the Adebayor interview. My opinion on that, (remember I am in favour of everyone being allowed an opinion) is that he has made himself look a total arse. He has no idea why he got stick at the start of the season????? He must be as thick as mince. He mucked about all close season, testing other waters until he got the massive contract he so desired. He has spent the majority of this season quite frankly failing to justify his vast wages. Now he moans about it. He is completely wrong about the fans singing his name. When he came back from the recent injury, where I sit his name was sung to the rafters. Perhaps he should use some of the 70k a week he gets to take some growing up and reality check lessons.
Airing all of this in public is embarrassing, and perhaps demonstrates that the gap between players/manager/board members and the true fans is getting wider by the day.
Why is it that out of the “Big 4” Arsenal are the only ones that lose top notch players every season?? I don’t see Chelski, Sliverpud, Man’ure losing their superstars every summer, but Arsenal always seem at least lately to lose one or more of there “key” players in the off-season, can someone please answer me this question??? I personally think Ade is off to Milano in the summer transfer window, and even though I don’t care for his attitude I think it would be a grave mistake to let him go especially to Chelski, cause if he goes there you just know he’ll score 30 plus goals and help them scummers win the title next season, thats the way it goes….. “And thats the way it is, this 19th day of May 2009!” (Ala Walter Cronkite)
Steve T: I would not lump all the fans in the same basket. I’m for calling a spade a spade and there’s a sizeable minority of shites among us. I’m talking about the ones that have been shouting abuses at our players during many home games this season. The ones that moan and sigh every time a pass goes astray. The ones that boo 19 year old players. The ones that call their own player geriatric in the manager’s face. The ones that make you ashamed to be an Arsenal supporter when you’re watching a game with a non-football fan mate.
Every big club has their own share. It’s not a surprise since they come with success, look no further than AV fans who started booing their own players for not winning straight after two painful losses against Chelski and ManU.
Even if our best players have not been targeted by the cunts (yet?), even they must be thinking about greener pastures when they hear it during games.
Make no mistake, this is not a public dispute between the club and the fans, it’s a fight against the shites that are threatening Arsenal to become the next Charlton.
