I've Got Friday (And Tottenham) On My Mind
Apr 20th, 2007 by 'holic
Friday is usually a good day for me. I don’t mind admitting I look forward to listening to a certain arse, er, I mean podcast by another blogger. Usually I can also pick up on Arsene Wenger’s latest interview on ATVO. Mrs Holic does not expect to spend much time with me on a Friday evening!
Today will be a super Friday. The arse, er, I mean podcast, is sure to have a good chunk of different views on what may come to be known as ‘Deingate”. More importantly I am looking forward to seeing Arsene expand on his widely reported comments from yesterday. Plus there is a North London derby to anticipate!
“It is a sad day for Arsenal Football Club,” the Arsenal manager is quoted as saying of Dein’s departure. “It is a huge disappointment because we worked very closely together. David has contributed highly to the success of the Club in the last 10 years and even before that as well. Red and white are the colours of his heart.”
Wenger attempted to pour oil on troubled waters on Arsenal.com. “My position is that I am linked with the club very strongly. The relationship with the rest [of the Board] has always been very good and we try always to have a good understanding.”
I don’t pretend to have the slightest idea what is on Arsene’s mind right now. My feeling is that there is not (a) a journalist or (b) a confidante of any description who (a) could or (b) would tell me what Le Boss is really thinking.
What I do feel, and strongly, is that the board now have an opportunity to ‘woo’ Wenger into extending his current contract. They should now ask him if there is someone with whom he feels he could work best as Dein’s replacement, and move to secure his choice on the same length of contract as Arsene would be prepared to put pen to paper for. (Isn’t life simple!).
I will happily read, or listen to, the arguments that will rage over the coming days and for now allow my attention to return to the impending trip to the Lane. This is one of the highlights of the year, and for tomorrow only assumes greater importance than almost anything else.
Driving home yesterday I heard that Robbie Keane would be missing for our friends in the north. Good news doesn’t come in twos’ and arriving ‘chez nous’ I was greeted by the headline that Cesc Fabregas is only a 50/50 chance to make it. Fifty percent of the goal threat is potentially missing from both sides and I chose this game to have a punt on a 3-5 correct score! Not to worry, tomorrow morning may bring better news.
If you are one of the chosen few with a ticket I hope you have a good day, and the lads earn us all the excuse to celebrate St Totteringhams Day tomorrow night. If you have your own teeth then the chances are you will have never seen the Lillyliver, er, I mean Lillywhites, beat us. I pray for your sake this tradition is maintained.
I wonder who has got David Dein’s ticket?
Have a good weekend all.

The board may consider that the proper replacement for Dein is Wenger, as a technical director, and the question they could ask him instead is “who does he want to replace himself as team coach/manager?” Wenger has already indicated that he doesn’t want to go on as a manager as long as Fergie and who better to find a replacement than Wenger himself. If Wenger retains a strong involvement in the club without the day to day pressures of delivering results on the field it secures the loyalty of those players and allows the club to continue to benefit from his unique skills.
Good point Amos, but I would think Wenger would want to complete his third incarnation before he has to decide his next move. Just an opinion you understand. I would fully expect him to keep his options open as long as he can. Having a hand in the new appointment may be a good hook to get him to commit a little earlier than he might otherwise have done.
However if Wenger is attracted by a job upstairs, then yes, let’s do it.
I’ve stated to other people and on other sites that Dein will be back with Mr Kroneke.
I don’t no whether it is best to keep the current board and it’s “Englishness” or whether Dein coming back with the yank and some extra pennies in the war chest. It’s all too much for my tiny little mind.
One thing I do know though, is that no matter what happens, no matter what tomorrow brings, I’ll still have red and white in my veins.
Come on the Gunners, lets get the weekend started with a bang!
I agree with you, Dave. Somehow it will be unfinished business if Wenger leaves in 2008, coz the progression of the team will not be complete then.
It must be one of those rare occurrences that we are talking abt this bit of news rather than our NLDs. Can u remember if thats ever happened before?
