Udinese Contribute To A Gripping Contest
Aug 16th, 2011 by 'holic
I think my calm mood owes nearly everything to Roy Hodgson. Unable to get the afternoon off I was at the mercy of the Sky presentation of events this evening. The Baggies manager offered common sense from his pre-match appreciation of Arsene Wenger, to pointing out to his fellow sniping ‘pundits’ after the game that Arsenal have two clean sheets in competitive football this season.
In between we had been lulled into some sense of optimism by Theo Walcott’s fourth minute opener, a superb finish from Aaron Ramsey’s precision cross. Something entirely unexpected was happening though. We continued to look for openings, but invariably a misplaced pass, or misread one-two, freed the visitors from pressure, and how positive were Whodinese when they got possession?
If we didn’t understand how they claimed the fourth spot in Serie A last season, we do now. I thought we avoided the toughest draw when we missed Rubin Kazan. The evidence of tonight suggests we may just have drawn ourselves the stiffest opposition of the lot. Strangely, comforted by the opening goal, I did sit back relatively free from volatility (alright neighbour?) and enjoyed a game that was evolving as an absolute cracker.
Thankfully we were able to start with the first choice back five, although the loss of Kieran Gibbs at half-time suggests a not entirely surprising absence for him with a hamstring pull. Cue days of clamouring for Arsene to buy a left-back, and regulars will know I am in agreement with that sentiment, if not the wailing and gnashing of teeth that accompanies it.
The sides traded counter attacks in as open and enjoyable an opening half of football as I can recall in a while. Gervinho just failed to connect with what looked a good opportunity to double the advantage, possibly distracted by the flying Thomas Vermaelen. Udinese countered often, and with pace and purpose. Song blocked, the crossbar denied the wily Di Natale, who also narrowly cleared the near post with another effort.
The second-half started with the Italians on top. They showed more urgency and determination in midfield. Watching from the directors box, I would imagine that the suspended gaffer was taking note of the performances of Badu, Asamoah, and Pinzi. If we get through I wouldn’t mind betting a tentative enquiry about either of those first two might be forthcoming. We added to to an apparently growing nervousness in the stadium with yet more misplaced passing, A Djourou block, before his brief appearance ended with another hamstring scare, and a fine Szczesny save from another Di Natale free-kick kept us in the lead.
As the half went on, we recovered our attacking threat, mainly as a result of the pace of Gervinho and Walcott. The latter spurned opportunities to rack up a hat-trick, denied by his own lack of technique for one, and by a fantastic Handanovic save in the closing minutes. It was that sort of night.
I’m fully expecting to see some criticism later from those present, and I must confess I have the advantage of a soothing half-gallon of Guinness and a couple of large Black Bush inside me right now. The second-leg will clearly be an altogether more nervous affair. For both sides probably. They will wonder just how potent we will be if we are closer to full strength. Certainly Robin van Persie should be back, but can we expect to see Jack Wilshere if his ankle is still in a protective cast tonight? Creating chances seems more of a problem for us than denying them, at this precise moment.
We will now be fully aware, if indeed we weren’t before, of their enthusiasm and appetite, and quality on the break. They are so unlike the archetypal Italian team you have to acknowledge their contribution tonight. I am sure we can get the away goal next week, but equally aware that we will have to be at our collective best, defensively, to ensure that will be enough to take us through to the big money.
Oh, and after our last experience of a referee in the Champions League, a word of appreciation for Kevin Blom tonight. Got the big decisions right I think, and contributed to the flow of the game. There, I don’t hate them all!

Not the best performance, but we won, didn’t concede an away goal, so not a bad result all round. If we can grab an early goal next week it’ll make things much easier for us.
Clean sheet was important tonight. Would have preferred one more goal. It’s half time and all to play for.
But we really need to go out and spend some money.
Oh and can the body snatchers please bring back the original Chamakh, you know, the one we had this time last year?
Guinness for me please and line them up for the late shift…..
I like Frimpong – he plays without fear. Jenkinson did OK too. Ramsey got better as the game went on. Theo lively and probably our best player on the night. A very important clean sheet.
First game on my season ticket. In no particular order:
– Rosicky is a passenger
– Chamakh tried, but…
– Walcott really should try to attack the full-back more
– Frimpong was highly positive when he came on. Movement and physicality.
– Ramsey gave the ball away but also showed positive thinking and a willingness to run.
– Djourou was shaky in possession.
– Gibbs looked until he went off.
And Song was our best player by a country mile. We definitely need more quality up front.
I see authors on some of the other sites are tearing into the side over this performance. In the context of all the current uncertainty and negativity, and recognising that Udinese are tough opponents, I would take this 1-0 as a good result. A few similar 1-0’s in the latter games last season and things could have turned out very differently.
Still it will be a tough away leg but so long as we score I’m backing us to go through.
My sentiments exactly. All we needed tonight was a win. We have come under severe criticism all summer, and many were tipping us to lose to Udinese over two legs. While the tie is nowhere near over, we are in a strong position going into the second leg, and I feel that one goal will be enough for us over there. Udinese did look good in parts, but I was quite impressed by our defence – Koscielny and Vermaelen look like they will work very well together, Sagna was solid as ever, Szczesny is getting better with every game, and I thought Jenkinson was steady when he came on. I am concerned by the injuries to Djourou and Gibbs, so I hope that is a reminder to Wenger that one if not 2 more defenders are still needed.
A nervy game indeed. Can someone tell me why we are keeping Chamakh and selling Pink Nik?
I was there and unable to imbibe as ‘Holic did although boy did we need it.
I have briefly looked at the comments and anyone who criticised Rosicky is being very harsh. He worked his guts out.We have it all to do.Wenger’s idiotic lack of practical good sense sent boys to do a man’s job.Jenkinson is clearly not ready,I was underwhelmed by Gervinho and we owed much to the triumvirate of Vermaelen,Koscielny and Szczesney. Sagna was also very dogged. But we were poor going forward generally,Chamakh@s confidence is in his boots and our perennial crocks didn’t take long to break down.We mustn’t let Squillaci near the team again so we need a left back as cover and we need some experience in a holding role in midfield. It just isn’t fair to burden Frimpong given his lack of experience.
Personally everything I see and hear from wenger worries or irritates the hell out of me.I think we have a very stressed and sick man in charge of our club and he is accountable to no-one.
Sadly I think it may be the last Champions League football we see at the emirates for some time if Wenger stays in charge.
Cheers, ‘holic.
Wouldn’t mind some defenders now.
A cheeky bid for Tremoulinas wouldn’t be greeted with disappointment here (I mean not too much disappointment π ).
Nobody can knock that result without being hypocritical. For years people have complained about us looking pretty but not getting the result. Tonight,we got the result. That’s is the only thing that counts when playing off for a CL berth.
Hello,
Yes Its me..Geddy. The Geddy Lee- longtime fan – since 1975 (when we toured the UK).
Please Wenger Sire purchase TWO Defenders……
And a reputable striker……
And an esteemed midfielder….
And lets see what happens.
Then spend a little more in JAN. but selling ARSHAVIn is key. He is already a spent force. A waster if you will.
Time stands still.
GL
Not sure if I`m welcome on this sight as I don`t participate in the amber fluid (doctor orders).
You can be critical without being damning and still be a supporter. Just thought I`d make that point.
First and foremost we need a left back. Secondly, Walcott needs a left foot.
The cries for reinforcements at LB, CB and mid field (playmaker) are still loud and clear. Chamakh has, unfortunately, not made the cut so a striker is also on the cards.
Udinese were far more intense, Arsenal`s passing was abysmal and we are lucky to still be in the CL with a chance.
Having said that we put on a brave show under the circumstances, yet I feel we don`t have a squad able to compete at top level and I will be surprised if we qualify this time next week.
Man-of-the-match…Without a doubt….SZCZESNY.
I hope we sign Cahill, Hazard and Benzema before next Wednesday so we can still tempt them with CL football- fingers crossed!
“site”, not “sight”. It`s early here I`m still asleep. Sorry!
Oh I love Sagna so much!
Excellent report on a very enjoyable game. Many positives I thought, but boy is the squad looking “thin” at the moment Jenkinson did much better than average and Frimpong will have enjoyed the outing. I’m with Zico on Burke and Hare Chamakh. May be time to shuttle him off to the medical centre just off the Royal Mile. Maybe we can loan to the sure footed Ade back while Chamakh is being re-transfused to normal service?
Need to drive to Philly tonight. Must rush.
Am I top of the Holic league with 39 points?
I would echo tinygooner. This team needs proven players now. I just do not see goals in us this season and although we were better with set pieces, it was the counter attack that would have done us in with better finishing from Udinese. Rosicky did track back which was why he was selected in front of Arshavin, unless he is out the door too. I fail to see a positive result in the return leg. This team is too weak and has too many kids. What is going on with our Arsenal?
Phew ….
Said before the game I’d take any kind of win given the circumstances of the game , but that was a tricky one to sit through . I think we’re all in for an uncomfortable 90 mins next week .
Schez was superb . Pulled off crucial saves in both halves and unlike his predecessors in the Arsenal goal , looks like he is thoroughly enjoying the experience .
Jury still very much out on the Defence despite the two clean sheets . Both Kos and Gibbs gave the ball away in dangerous areas , and Kos remains impetuous in trying to win the ball back when there is no danger ( witnesss the free kick he gave away in the dying seconds ) . The injuries to Djourou and Gibbs must make reinforcements at LB and CB a necessity , if they weren’t previously .
The midfield three were ineffective as a unit and suffered a dreadful middle third of the game either side of half time , when control of the game was completely lost . Rosicky briefly fluttered neatly if ineffectively , before becoming , in the second half , completely anonymous . Ramsey’s industry was commendable , but he gave the ball away frequently and to expect him to regularly start and shoulder the creative burden is , I would suggest , optimistic . Song had a good game although indiscipline remains and he will be missed . Hurry back Jack , and dare I suggest , Diaby .
Up front , both Theo and Flipper did enough to suggest that their pace and trickery will cause problems for most Defences . As regards Chamakh , I can only echo what others have said . It is hard to credit that it is the same player who looked so immediately at home this time last year . Whatever it is that’s bothering him , fitness , confidence , haircut … needs to be addressed . At the moment , he appears tentative , to the point of indolence . There were more than a couple of occasions tonight where the ball went wide and he just didn’t bother breaking a sweat to try getting into the box .
Frimpong didn’t do himself any harm and will certainly play in the Prem games coming up , whilst Jenks looked far less comfortable on the left than he had done in pre season on the right .
So a win’s a win , but the job is only half done . Come on Arsene , time to turn the pressure valve down a bit – let’s get the quality in , smash the mugsmashers , secure our Champs league spot , and then turn over the Mancs .
Simples .
Udinese were dangerous and I’m quite shocked we didn’t concede.
Our spark is almost completely gone and the gaps between the midfielders were huge.
The Song, Ramsey, Rosicky partnership looks wrong and we desperately need Jack back.
Oh and one last thing.
I’m starting to think we need to get some beef and narrow the gaps in midfield in order to win the midfield battle, so a combination of both Frimpong and Song in midfield (sort of like Gilberto and PV) with Jack in from of them.
yet again i scratch my head.. chamakh – waste. walcott – PRETENDER. roscicky – useless. djorou – pretender. TV stand out player.
there are far too many players whon think they have made it, just because they have arsenal shirt. how udinese didn’t finish us off i really don’t know. they showed greta movement and adventure. we nee dto improve a greta deal to get through to next round.
how much did we pay for gervinho ? no matter what the answer is my next question is WHY ? does anyone think he belongs at this level ?
Thought it was OK overall. Hard to knock a win and another clean sheet for the Wozmeister.
Norfolk @ 3 β agree completely on the new boys. Very impressed with Frimpong, and heard a quite catchy little song for the fella tonight.
Little Tripoli @ 4 β disagree only about Sicknote β thought he was on way better form than we saw last term, and looked like he was busting a gut to get a result. Only sorry he faded a bit in the second half.
Scott @ 10 β spot on. Iβll take a 1-0 victory any day and care not a jot about the prettiness or not of how we got there.
Aussie Jack @ 11 β my MOTM too. Lovely job from the boy tonight. Bossy, shouty, and, errrr, organise-eyβ¦Iβm not nearly as panicked about set pieces as I was last season by a long way. That boy is properly in command of his area, and with de Gea looking like he couldnβt catch clap in a whorehouse, I couldnβt be happier for the lad.
TABS @ 17 β absolutely on the money, particularly about Flipper, Theo and poor old Chamack. The only thing I can disagree with was about Chamack not breaking into a sweat β I thought he was sweating more than Farton in a parole hearing; I have no idea why, because he looked tired but nevertheless a long way from being active or particularly effective. Maybe heβs been training at Greggs with the little Russian. Who knows?
If I could wish for anything it would be a bit more fluency in midfield. Ramsey has had better games and looks a to be a bit short of the kind of vision and clinical passes heβs capable of. But Iβm nit-picking now because β stuff it β we got a result.
Have heard on SSN that UEFA appear to have a downer on AW for allegedly getting messages to the bench in violation of the ban. They really are an unutterable bunch of f*cktardsβ¦.
While Iβm here, congratulations to Mr van P, and get well soon little Jack, we missed you tonight. And a round for everyone please barkeep, for a most traditional 1-0 to the Arsenal. Canβt actually believe it myself, but Iβm really looking forward to the trip to Udineseβ¦
I doubt if you ever knew! Gervinho is definately in line for a hatfull of goals for us this season and rosicky is looking like he may have his best season at the club. If Theo gets his wish and gets a more forward role it could be the next step for him let’s face it if it wasn’t for his pace he would have made a rubbish winger he just doesn’t have what it takes to be a winger but he may just be the second striker that we need alongside rvp. The injury list is a bit concerning for what is a busy couple of weeks and the squad is looking dangerously thin on quality especially proven quality. I would take 3 draws from the next 3 games right now if Jesus/Satan offered them to me. Here’s hoping for a bit of help from the transfer Market sooner rather than later !
Anyone who wants to see Theo up front will need to understand it’d be a bad idea in this specific formation we play and AW already said he won’t be changing his formation.
Theo up front in a 4-4-2 would be Ok but not as a lone striker.
I’m not the sort to put our team in more misery, I think we have it tough as it is.
Lets forget about who left and who will be here in the next two weeks. We looked very bad in the second half and if it wasn’t for Wojtek we would be going there with a goal down. If this was Flappy then most of you would flap at the same time and call him Flappy hands!
Anyway my point is our midfield is so weak it’s about bearable to watch, when energy was there we seemed to cope but once they turned the cock screw we were in No Mans Land! At home it hurts because I have never seen such a depleted sqaud going into the group stages!
Phew, I’m totally out of clean boxers now.
We won uglier then a Joey Barton, Susan Boyle love child but I’m not gonna sit here and complain about that, especially after keeping a priceless clean sheet to boot.
I’ll gladly take a 1-0 win in every game for the rest of the season, not so sure my heart could handle it though.
Woj, TV, Sagna and Song were massive. Sorry to say that Chamakh was as bad as his hairdo.
Next Wednesday’s encouner will be a different game altogether. They will have to come at us and hopefully with RvP back in the team we,ll have enough to catch them on the break. One away goal should see us through.
Vodka shots all round please guv.
Cheers.
Going to bed now, but I have to say I am happy.
Not overly with the result, nor with the obvious weaknesses that have been highlighted (but we all knew were there).
But because I saw something that I haven’t witnessed for a few years; Bloody minded, sleeves rolled up, backs-to-the-wall, SPIRIT.
I shall elaborate more when sober.
Go Rollers.
Chamakh is a broken man. When he joined us, he was fantastic…….
RVP comes back and claims the strikers role, deservedly so,leaving the guy whose goals carried us til Xmas playing nothing but bit roles. Personally,I thought we should have RVP along side either Chamakh of Bendtner. Both of these guys have proven that they can be dangerous when given playing time, but playing twenty minutes here and there has killed them. Scoring goals is not something you can turn on and off with the flick of a switch. Anyway,I do not have an easy answer, but I do know that 90% of fans have been way too harsh on both of them.
I swear I must be living in a parallel universe. Maybe it’s me. Maybe I don’t know what it is to be a football fan any more. Does negativity define the modern Gooner? Maybe I should try and stop bleeding red and white.
What I should definitely do is come off my existential trip and say I thought we were fucking blinding tonight. Balls, guts, heart. The Arsenal as I was brought up on them. Auxerre anyone? One Nil To The Arsenal?
Fuck. Yeah.
Up the Arse!
With Gibbs and Traore both injured it seems TV will line up at LB on Saturday and with Djourou injured it can only mean one thing…
Squillaci as CB on Saturday.
I kept thinking that last year we would have conceded. We were short on the attacking end but our effort was there even though we didn’t play a great game. Chamkah was tough to watch but I thought he did okay holding-up the ball on the entry pass. He just can’t turn and go for some reason. Song, Sagna and TV were great. Sagna just keeps running and running, a joy to watch. In the end, it’s the result that matters. How many times last year did we play Wengerball only to draw or lose. I was sweating, but I’ll take 1-0.
Right now it looks like we’re trying to find out who we are, whose going to step-up (classic sport’s phrase, I know) and who can play (youngsters). Looks like Frimprongs a keeper, good to have a little steel in the midfield. If we get a couple of draws in the meantime against Liverpool and ManU, I’d probably be okay with that at this point.
my take is the udinese were always going to pose good oposition for me good points were Szezny looks good one lapse where they hit the cross bar and once on his distribution but overall i rate him,Verm looks good and will be masive with another quality CB next to him,Koss looks good for a back up,the mid-field looks like it has some fight but needs some creative help badly,i would love to see our forward line go to a front two and play early balls like the Smith and Wrighty days,Chamak has lost the plot he is not up to leading an attack singlhandidly so i would prefer the direct method please with our pace merchants,1-0 laed i will gladly take.
@Snir 29: I think we’d more likely start with the back line that finished the Udinese game rather than insert Squillaci. Thus, it would more likely be Jenkinson at left back, with Vermaelen and Kos in the centre and Sagna in his customary position, unless there are further injuries.
I heard it mentioned on the Tuesday Club pod towards the end of the season ( around the time the Giggs scandal was in the news) that Chamakh had a similar issue (injunction) – anyway his form has dropped dramatically since that time – the lads on the pod weren’t allowed to talk about it – has anyone heard anything about this – could be a reason why he is so ineffective if hisind is elsewhere!
if udinese play by this way next week we haven’t problems for win…..arsenal in the second half don’t run such us friulani…..
* mind – iPhone keyboard grrrrrrrr!
Yes, I agree
This is how I think we will line up for saturday
szcz
sagna TV Kos Jenkinson
Frimpong Ramsey
Rosicky
Walcott Arshavin
RVP
If Jack is fit, I say go with an all out attacking unit with Jack instead of Frimpong
But, I have to say this first eleven doesn’t look solid at all, does it? π
@27 Catalan Gunner
You got it spot on there mate!
I see and hear of the comments around the ‘thin’ squad – and there’s no denying it…
But, loved the spirit form the team tonight. For once in a long time, there were no passengers and everyone was giving 100%.
Only concern is that some of the 100%’s aren’t of a good enough quality!
Kevnal@34: wasn’t that a joke?
1-0 to the Arsenal. Quite frankly a rather good result and I have to say that while they could have scored we could also have scored more. Theo missed two great chances and Gervinho could very well have made it 2-0 on that corner. And for all their possession, Udinese didn’t create very much at all after the Djourou block in the second half. In the first half they had the one on one after the corner and the shot off the crossbar (but Woj would have got his hand to it if it had been a bit lower) but other than that it was never that dangerous. The boys looked really nervous, but we hung on and fought our way through the game in a way we hardly ever saw last season.
I also agree with Matt. I looks like we are building from the back now. If we can play the same team but with RvP instead of Chamakh in the return leg we definitely have what it takes to go through because remember, if we score one they have to score three and they know it. Getting that clean sheet was extremely important.
Happy we have won yesterday no doubt about that a win is a win and will take an ugly win anytime!
This group will need some time to find each other, confidence was looking rather low at points. We lost two players which is not good but we fought hard and gave everything on the pitch. Can’t fault the team for hard work, determination and staying in there.
It was close at times but we came out victorious…get in there!
Morning all, didn’t see the game cos the CG management pulled a crafty one on me and secretly invited my mates to what was supposed to be a quiet birthday ‘me + the mrs only’ dinner.
Disappointed to be plied with mezcal, Modelo and Mexi food all evening! π
Have to say hats off to everyone today, the drinks have made a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Only saw a 10-minute highlight so from what I saw:
– Theo’s goal was nicely taken, not to mention the laser-guided cross from Rambo.
– Some of the misplaced passes looked scary the way they completely reversed the attacking flow in Udinese’s favour.
– …but had they found their targets it seemed as if we would torn their defence open more than once.
– Looked like we fought well.
– Perhaps a drop or two of that rare elixir, good luck, in keeping the clean sheet?
– 1-0 to the Arsenal. One of my favourite scorelines.
– Grab a goal after about half an hour next week and we’ll be laughing.
Water please barkeep. My head still hurts from last night’s festivities.
Now sober – and still happy! Wasp @ 38, yes, that is the problem, but how many times recently have we seen more talent with less application? I’ll go for the reverse we saw yesterday.
Jenkinson was playing his first game out of the Championship, out of position. He wasn’t world class, but give him a break!
Very excited to see the switching of wings that Gervinho and Theo were doing. Imagine how they will be with RVP in the middle!
@42 CG
Agreed – very happy with the application of the boys last night – but let’s hope AW can address the ‘talent’ gap then!
Fair point re Jenkinson – the lad’s a kid with no experience so no criticsim whatsoever levelled at him.
However, my concern would be both Rosicky and Chamakh ‘tried’ – but ultimately neither are good enough.
(And that’s based on what I’ve seen from them over their careers at Arsenal NOT just last night).
Quite agree ‘holic. Nobody can say it was perfect and Udinese were better than I expected them to be, but we got the win, didn’t concede a goal and I fancy us to score at their place.
This gives AW the chance to secure a defender, a midfielder and an attacker. Hold on, didn’t I say that last year?
The future is bright, the future is a glazed red…
@42/@43
Jenkinson’s limitations aided us defensively – he didn’t gallivant forward and leave us exposed. Also, his height meant that he wasn’t targeted in the same manner as Clichy.
Little Tripoli@45: good point, and I also have to say that he did not try to play above his level. He kept it simple and chose a safe pass back to Szczesny instead of trying any Clichyesque trickery in tight situations. That is the right thing to do, find your feet before you start doing the fancy stuff. I am actually starting to think that he may well become a decent player for us – not that that changes the fact that we still need more players, we are simply too short-staffed right now.
Transfer rumors seem to have died down, the casualty of actual news I imagine?
there was a tweet this morning saying French media saying we had bid Β£17.5M for Eden Hazard, but no link. Usual drivel possibly but cant help but hope!
Hey 65 and coun tin: Hazard would be good but the lack of other rumors could also be the casualty of the Fleet Streeters’ heavy schedule of their own FFL transfer considerations. π
Serious point there!

They are taking the piss now!
What a bunch of royal a-holes UEFA are. Sadly though, “ignorance is no defence” when it comes to breaking rules and laws and although it’s unsurprisingly cuntish behaviour from those bellends in charge of the European game, it seems justified. And stupid at the same time.
Dodging Bullets.
Fans who are not used to this will whine and cringe, while others will enjoy the event. As your football evolves you emulate us more and more!!
Here is cracker for you all
0838: FOOTBALL: Former Arsenal manager George Graham on Arsene Wenger’s possible probe by Uefa for passing messages to the touchline when sat in the stands: “It’s all a bit childish, he’s been banned and passing messages down to the bench happens all the time. It’s a lot of nonsense,” Graham told BBC Radio 5 live. He added: “There’s a lot a negativity around the club at the moment. It was good to get a victory, but it was not a great performance.”
Song banned for three games! Now this is something we definitely didn’t need.

Cusop
Can’t be that bad can it now? If you have keeper like Gomes!
We did just about enough to give us a decent chance next Wednesday. The early goal gave us all false hope that we were in for a nice evening, but no. The familiar faliures were all there, and in truth we rode our luck and the brilliance of Szczesny. The enforced changes limited AW`s scope somewhat and Gibbs`s “sorry gaffer its gone again” moment merely reinforces my previously stated opinion that we urgently need to buy a left back. Traore isn`t fit and we could be starting the Liverpool game with another square peg in a round hole. Squillaci time could be round the corner folks! I must say that Jenkinson has impressed me so far, but you must expect when he comes under extreme pressure his inexperience may let him down.
This team won`t beat Liverpool this coming weekend, and unless we progress in the CL we will find ourselves in the same position as the spuds ie. unable to sign players of any real quality. Our season could effectively be over before September.
Afternoon gents and escapees from the Noah carridge..
Underwear has now been cleaned and placed in an extra drawer next to the bar within easy reach for next Wednesdays fixture.
In the cold light of day and with the effects of last nights alcohol waning, I can take stock of yesterdays performance. I hope the players and fans (fat chance) can put the negatives aside and focus on the positives, Some players played beyond themselves and our keeper is growing in stature with every set piece, every fired shot and every one on one. My confidence in him has grown so much that I actually keep my eyes open when we have these situations instead of putting my hands over me boat and diving for cover, it’s a welcome change I can tell you,
I’ll agree that it wasn’t particulary great to be put under so much pressure in a home match, but it was heart warming to see the effort that the players put in, their attitude epitomised by JD’s last minute lunge to throw himself in front of a goal bound shot, the lads never gave up, We had two under 20’s on the field who had never been near a CL game before, one who was played out of position yet still we managed to hold on to that precious clean sheet and all important one goal advantage.
I remember us playing a lot neater, tippy tappier football last season, dominating games and coming away with nothing. Last nigfht was a bumpy turbulent ride, but unlike last season when the roller coaster came to a halt I didn’t feel the need to expel my lunch.
The world is against us and they’re all standing, waiting and hoping for us to fail, our backs are up against the wall and we’re fighting for our lives…….
I’m loving it!!
Better get the drinks in before the alcohol completly wears off, Bloody Marys all round please.
The season effectively over before September? Before two cup competitions even start? And the league season is over after three games? By September 1st we will be in four competitions (and I am confident that one of those will be the European Cup), saying the season could be over by then is mistaken at best and downright foolish at worst. As for saying this team definitely won’t beat Liverpool, this is based on what? Their recent scintillating form?
AtG.@54
That was a foregone conclusion, there was no way he was going to get away with that, and if we’re honest, rightly so.
The only thing that comes of this situation is futher proof that the Fa’s rules and methods of handling these matters are totally flawed, as once again the instigater of both incidents will get away scott free, whereas we will miss two key players for two very big games (and one against Swansea).
H2H @ 57
Have to echo your sentiments there. It’s totally bizarre, we win a game like that and the negativity seems to have GROWN in response – what the hell is up with that?
I only saw some highlights while munching on my breakfast bagel but some of the defending looked, dare I say it, quite assured. Barely a whiff of the blind panic in our pelanty area when the ball was pinging around dangerously. Ditto set pieces.
Sure, it looked we also got a bit of luck but EVERYone needs that from time to time, just look at Farca with their corrupt, arse-licking UEFA refs itching to give out red cards as soon as anyone threatens their near-annual progress to the CL final.
Must be time for a coffee break by now.
Correction: “looked like”
Trev, Dr. C.
Man United and AFC both suffered muscle injuries in the first week of the season (Vidic, Rio, Gibbs, JD, Traore, TR) after 6 weeks of preseason.
What do you think could be the reason for that? Surely it’s not fatigue. Perhaps the preaseason training wasn’t as up to speed as needed?
Cheers CG.
Oh yeah, before I forget. I think a word about the home support last night is in order, they too were massive, like a 12th man, at least that’s how it sounded on my tv, I remember the dutch commentater even mentioning how impressed he was at the way the crowd tried to lift the team.
I like to think that it was TS and other attending ‘holics that got the crowd going, Well done lads.
Too right…. H2H
The 12th man was also massive last night, very good of you to mention it
Not sure what happened to TS he hasn’t been back on here yet perhaps loosing his voice was not the only thing on his agenda π
Let’s hope the home crowd keep up the good work. We’ll need everyone’s support for every game this season…I just have this feeling a pot of gold is at the end of this one…
A guinness for everyone in the bar, red wine for H2H…stale milk for Cusop
P.S. Check out this RVP interview fellas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkmUtMpbH7I
Red wine??
How am I? Neil Diamond? π
Wouldn’t say no to a beer though. Cheers CoR
How = Who,
D’oh.
If jack is fit for the second leg, we will qualify.. I am pretty sure
My main worry is this: will Arsene replace players who have left?
I am not too sure at the moment π
I was just grateful that we got away with the win. I don’t want to criticise any one, the players had had a traumatic week ,with the fall out from Newcastle and the Cesc departure.
We did look very short of experience and I am putting my trust in Arsene that quality reinforcements will arrive before the 1/9 .We all knew we had injury prone players at the back and last night merely confirmed our concerns that additions at CB,LB and MF are urgently needed.
True Gooners were there last night and helped the boys get over the line . I will gear myself up for a heart-stopping encounter on Saturday , any good news on LJW’s ankle would be most welcome.
As always COYRs
Adebayor is close to signing for us. Why do you all hate him so much?
How long have you got Cusop?
Because he is a cunt who just wants to play for money
Becausehespeakstoofastwithoutanypausesandbecauseheisatotalcunt
Tabs – Lol. A lot.
Cusop – Because he’s a self-interested, gold-digging gobshite.
We hate anyone who has anything to do with the LWC Cusop – quite simple really.
Andheisatotalcunt.
Still, another step toward Twitch making you lot bankrupt.
Eboue says he turned down spurs. What the fuck is wrong with harry… Hint just because you buy all the second hand parts for a sports car does not mean you can restore it to its former glory.
Can we please sign someone before I go doolally..
Its fine Noel we will leave all the lucus ignition parts at the Imaginates.
Gallas has been great and he has kept his gob shout if Addy Bi Whore scores for us in a win against you he will be loved by one and all
Truthfully this could be the end of Redknapp if Addy Bi Whore turns out to be a fuck up then the hard core spurs fans will turn on Twitchy faster than you can shout Parkinson Disease.
I think you may find that I dislike Mr Motor Mouth intensely and would be happy to swap managers in an instant. Perhaps Arsene might like chigwell
Nasri’s wage at City – 200K a week and a 5MΒ£ signing fee.
That’s absolutely crazy money.
Problem is I have the feeling that not all of the money from Cesc and Nasri will be used to replace ’em.
Because we couldn`t all but put this play off round to bed yesterday, I would expect that most of any ongoing negotiations for players we may be involved in will be on hold until the result of next Wednesday`s result is known. This of course one important reason why we should have got our business done as early as possible this summer. Of course Arsene couldn`t possibly spend the money before we moved anyone on – unlike Fergie and King Kenny.
Is the HT actually running, or have two clean sheets and a startlingly good bit of business – 25m for a gobshite in his final year – derailed it?
I’m only asking as I’m not too sure myself. FFS Arsene; pull your finger(s) out and get people in. Of proven high quality. Or are you completely oblivious to the atmosphere surrounding our club?
3 good signings and the good young players coming through, and I feel all will be well. Fail, and….
I’ll be in the Noah carriage counting my FFL points. Won’t take long.
Cusop It must be amazing what 50 years of failure can do for one’s humility.
Dr C – HT currently in a siding – as good a metaphor as any for AFC at this moment.
Far from a derailment, though. π
Dr Z – fair enough. Wrong leaves online? (See what I did there? Genius.)
Back to The Rollers..
It is with great pride that I can report that The GT Rollers are bottom, not only of the HT league, but also of the whole Goonerholic League too.
You all now have permission to ignore, without hesitation, any views I may have on football.
Going to open the GT and seek inspiration…
Lonestar….. you may care to join me!
your last line far more sensible than anything football related Dr C π
I’ll go get the pipes .
Might need some Eastern products to find the answer to this one TABS!
just watched Cesc playing in a Barca shirt….feel a bit sick….
Chinese on its way Dr C .
I see it didn’t take too long for you know who to do his first victory huddle . Is that the Spanish version of the Charity Shield ?
Agreed Tim – really gut wrenchingly awful .
tabs – it was very odd, sad, annoying, emotional and at the same time I can see why he’s there. the only good thing I can think of…is that he’s not playing for another English club
I couldnt bring myself to watch the game tonight, the poor mind wouldnt know which of the farca/real maureen’d humpacunts to spew venom at first. Its been a crazy few days but excellent results with the right kind of attitude which i feel may be borne out the nasrigas abandonment? Thought song was immense vs whodineasy considering he was patrolling the center mid and in front of the defence with very little help except theo. Had to watch the game on terrestrial tv here with mark “fuck me im hilarious and completely anti-arsenal” Lawrenson commentating which only served to solidify my regained sense of the world is against us so fuck em all we’ll show em. Glaring weaknesses throughout the squad but the solid foundation of the long missing attitude means we’re almost back. Nasrigas could be the darkest moment before the dawn Gooners! Come on you reds!
Tim , I only caught the very end of the game with a Spanish commentary on a very dodgy stream . Saw him fouled which led to the handbags at the end . I think you sum up the varying emotions very well . I think my overriding feeling was one of ” this just ain’t right ” .
Very discombobulating , just felt very surreal . I think I will ignore Barca matches in the future and pretend it’s just not happening .
Could be worse – a good rallying cry . Lets hope we all look back on this as the darkest moment .
Have a drink of your choice on my tab .
Cheers tabs, will you all join me in a swift glass of half full with a platter of ze mental strength before i leave for the night. Interesting few weeks ahead for the club, i dont expect any business to be completed (inward at least) before next Wednesday’s Tie but can see at least 3 coming in and have the sneaky suspicion at least one will come as a complete shock to us. As always its great to be a Gooner, and tabs dont forget to let Cusop out before you leave- he stinks up the place if left inside for too long!
Evening all, too late yet again.
Interesting lack of drinks for the day after a game. Personally I feel a bit non-plussed. I was at the game, and we did try to lift the team.
No negative chants during or after, but everyone came away wondering how we got away with it.
Our injury situation is shocking. Gibbs was looking good again, but fulfilled everybody’s expectations by coming off injured. It is a great shame ‘cos he has talent and is home produced, but he simply cannot be relied upon as a first choice left-back.
The fighting spirit was generally very good, and Szcz was excellent again.
Here comes the ‘but’.
A club like Arsenal should simply not be relying on a 19 year old, playing out of position in his first game for the club, to save a Champions League match. However good a prospect he is, and however nice a guy and fan of the club, it is not fair on him, and it is not fair on the fans who are paying top, top prices to watch these untried prospects.
Sorry, but there it is. It is no reflection whatsoever on Jenkinson who tried hard and thank goodness, came away unscathed when on a hiding to nothing.
Once our back four was disrupted by the wholly predictable injuries it cannot possibly have escaped Arsene Wenger that our backup is way short of the required standard.
Djourou is a player I have liked and would love to see him succeed. He appears to have all the attributes, unfortunately including the glass legs.
In the air he can be dominant and often brings the ball very tidily out of defence. On the ground he is an accident waiting to happen, and, throughout his Arsenal career, has been unable to stay fit.
Three examples there of very decent blokes with not a little talent, but who sadly are not ready to be relied upon.
I have tried, this summer, to switch off from the transfer window.
I have tried to see the positives in every bit of action and inaction.
When I now contemplate the stage of the transfer window and the season that we have reached, and look at the strength and preparedness of our squad, the truth is, I am angry.
The reasons are well known and well documented by almost everybody.
We are now into the sixth season at the new stadium. A stadium that generates Β£3million per match and was supposed to elevate us to one of the top clubs in the world.
The squad looks as thin as I can remember in recent times. There are some absolute diamonds in that squad and I desperately want to see them achieve success.
The manager has a world-wide scouting network and substantial funds. Our weaknesses are obvious, but day after day, week after week, they are not addressed.
What comes out of Arsenal ? Not one word. Other than blathering on about not being able to find sufficient quality to replace Squillaci etc. etc. etc.
Anybody know why ??
Sorry but my patience bubble burst today. π
Hi Tabs, zico –
generally agree with your summations of Adebarndoor, but I can’t believe you both forgot “themostimportantting”. π
Could be worse – heh π , thanks for the drink of half full . Never drink anything else –
We’ll just have to wait and see what transpires , but I still think that as long as we qualify next week some of the incomings will genuinely fascinate .
Cusop has been let out to fetch sticks , almost as pointless a task as frequenting the Lane .
Hi Trev ,
Can’t disagree with anything you say really . I have tried desperately to maintain a positive outlook in print throughout the summer , I think partly as a reaction to the wholly vicious assault on the club going on elsewhere .
Privately , I have just become increasingly baffled with what’s going on . I will maintain a sense of calm until 31 aug , but if the necessary additions haven’t been made , I will bear both the angst and the anger of someone who has been taken in .
Chat on Five Live’s web page with Bob Wilson and Lee Dixon worth catching .
Have a night cap on me .
Cheers mate, likewise.
At least tabs chasing sticks he has a chance of actually succeeding π Trev all valid points but my view for the squad being as threadbare is that wenger is clearing house of those not committed enough to succeed i.e. Nasrigas, eboue, vela, jet, clichy etc he is making inroads into the problems that have undermined our club for far too long. Also i dont think its a matter of money with the club, his transfer policy has had to change this summer due to the clearout and with qualification not in the bag yet, assurances to top quality players cannot be given. I am sure targets have been identified well in advance and it is only a matter of that champions league spot to get the whole thing in motion. The mood, direction and drive behind the club is undergoing a reshuffle which i am certain will only benefit all of us. As for your patience, i certainly appreciate how it would be tested but your support in the stadium is an integral part of the new direction and dont get me wrong i wouldnt for a second doubt the continuing commitment, but perhaps the 1st of September would be a better day to review the patience. Either way a drink is waiting at the bar for putting up with my ravings. Goodnight Gooners!
Snir – hard to say why so many muscle injuries.
Instinctively I think that as players are reaching the top level at a younger age, they are maybe overstressing bodies that are essentially still immature. Once you seriously tear or over-stretch ‘soft’ connective tissue, it is very difficult to ever fully recover the original condition.
Being at a young age clearly does not apply to Rio Ferdinand, but there could be other reasons for his problems, best not guessed at here.
You have to think that harder playing surfaces play a part too. Remember when the Chavs first went on pre-season tours in the U.S. ?
That was the first time their ‘current’ squad suffered a real crop of injuries, after playing on some very hard and very dry surfaces.
Best I can do, I’m afraid.
Now, sleep.
Re: Dr. Z @82: The HT may be in a siding but for the sake of your local distillery I hope all of ‘holic’s readers aren’t “on the wagon”. Wee dram of Glenfiddich please barman. π
Re: Trev @96: Eminently reasonable diatribe. It’s fair to say we’re in a pickle at the moment. Or maybe eating a pickle. In a siding. Or something I can’t quite articulate as well as you. π
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2027238/Arsenal-manager-Arsene-Wenger-continues-balance-books.html
(Hoping) Arsene (still) knows.
Trev – Cheers.
Do you (like me) have the feeling that Jack is this year’s TV or maybe RvP?
TV – Achilles problem that needs resting to heal.
RvP – An ankle problem that took 3 months to recover from.
Could a bruised ankle keep you out that long or is that AW not giving us all the info?
Trev @96 – thanks for articulating perfectly my feelings right now.
On the other hand – It could Be Worse; thanks for some very valid points, especially about the clearing out of those with the wrong attitude. I feel you may have hit on something there.
As I said in my little rant earlier – just a few good signings and I’ll be happy, as I can see the better attitude. Quite a big “if” though….
Trev – You’re guess is about the same as mine re all the injuries. Can’t think of anything better!
Good morning one and all,
Going to be positive.
Great to get back to The Ems on Tuesday night (plus very eventful post match stories). Team put in a real shift. Sagna, Szcz, in fact whole defence really starting to look solid.
Really looking forward to seeing a few Holic faces on Saturday.
Great to see those who don’t want to be in the club on their way out.
Frimpong, Jenkinson tow great prospects for season to come.
Drinks for all please Mr. Barman.
CMC open.
You’ll find me in the sidings if you want a ‘chat’.
Well said Trev @96 – Ureds!
TS – we want the stories!
Has TS recovered from his tuesday night yet?
I sampled new stuff for the GT last weekend. Quality, I have to say.
Dr.C @ #111
Too boring without the supplement of a real beverage in hand π
Ollie @ #112
I’m considering a quick sojourn in the Secure Unit so that I can be out in time for The Mickeys but I need to invest in some spatula insurance before entering. Maybe The Sweeper has some advice on that?
Trev ‘ 96 – I feel your pain.
Can someone explain to me what our plan B is (other than ants and hornets) for the forthcoming season?
We really are in a mess at the moment.
To cheer myself up, I am going along to the Channel 5 league tonight to shout abuse at Twitch.
Nothing wrong with ants and hornets Dr Z π
Give the jam tarts a cheer from me
heh tabs,
I feel like complaining to Watchdog.
There was nothing in my “Guide to Comedy at the Festival Fringe” about a Clown and Performing circus coming to town, and up pops every taxman’s dream.
I don’t see an upset on the cards, (unless that includes me being done for persistent and abusive behaviour, breach of the peace, and under the affluence of inkohol) π
TS @ 113
I wouldn’t advise a couple of nights in the SU without me as your personal bodyguard.
From what i hear, the Deviants are in control, they have the numbers now the Summer ‘ visitors ‘ have all left.
The lovely C tells me she is perfectly safe because the D’s are not interested in Females.
So unless you want to be polishing a large variety of other Spatulas,
i strongly suggest you find some other place for relaxation.
I’m sure Wolfie has some suggestions.
cheers
The sweeper.
I think that pretty much sums up how we all feel Trev (@96)
Even the happiest of happy train passengers are harbouring doubts, and who can blame them? I too find myself wondering how on earth we have let ourself get to where we are now with Mr Back firmly planted against Mr Wall.
Less then two weeks to rectify our situation and in the current climate stop gap replacements will not be tolarated. I always thought that when you found yourself in a hole, rule number one was to stop digging, however it seems that Arsene and the board are steady shoveling their way towards China.
I’ll always be a glass half full fan, that’s just the way I am, but until the end of this month I’ll be in a close proximity to the CMC.
A round for the bar and pass the pipes please good sir.
Dr Z – Don’t forget your Peruvian anti-riot suit . Pot shots at monkey boy from the touchline an absolute necessity .
Clive @ #117
Excellent advice as usual, thanks! I will take heed and avoid as recommended. There a large, freshly squeezed glass of OJ on the bar for you made from seedless fruits π
H2H @ #118
Heh! Yes, Mr.Back and Mrs.Wall need to be pulled off eachother and sharpish! Cheers for drink and fresh pipe.
zico @ #116
I’ll echo tabs’ cheers for Hearts. Please re-direct some of your angst on my behalf towards The Grand Tax Evader Pursuivant tonight and his band of LWCs. Looks like they also have a mass of injuries to deal with… shame. Adebaywhore a perfect match for that bunch IMO. Hope they waste their money ASAP.
tabs @ #115
If ants = an experienced defenders and hornets = experienced, attacking midfielders then I’m in total agreement π
Drinks for you all on my tab on the bar. Right, I’m heading back to the sidings to perform some safety checks with Edwin…
Last night on the box in the bar, I had the Farca v Fake Madrid game on.
It was just on in the background and I wasn’t really watching it until Cesc came on.
Some of you may not understand this, or may even feel the need to slate me, but I had a genuine feeling of happiness for him, ofcourse seeing him in that horrible shirt did make me a little quezy, but that strip is so bad it would turn even the strongest of stomachs. Yet I can’t deny that I really was chuffed for him that he played a part in the build up to the winning goal and I was horrified when he was hacked down by that fucktard Marcello. I also enjoyed the ensuing melee that followed the tackle. El Classlesso just isn’t El Classlesso without the mandatory handbags,
To sum up I think I have found what those in the relationship therapy business would call closure, This is a good thing.
Dear Mr True Storey ,
I have been contacted by The Sweeper as he feels you may benefit from some relaxation advice .
This is a tricky position for me as I am far happier writing to agony aunts , rather than acting as one , but I shall endeavour to do my best .
As you are aware I derive much satisfaction from being ” in the hole ” . There is little better in life than coming from behind and supporting Arse .
It can however be a very intensive experience and from time to time we all need to deflate and recharge the batteries . I would recommend that you stay away from the SU as the Sweeper has said , and get yourself down your local lido .
There’s something about the smell of chlorine , the chance to put on one’s speedoes , that really brings out the best in a man . A chance to get wet , perhaps some diving , but most importantly a regular stroke , this is I feel what you need .
Yours Butterflyingly
Wolfgang Smallballs .
Dear Wolfgang,
Very kind of you. Don’t worry, there’s no agony here. It’s a little lonely in the sidings but no worries as there’s always lots to keep me occupied.
I’m all for the smell of chlorine and a brisk swim although a spot of breast-stroke is more my thing.
With you fully on supporting Arse and coming from behind.
Appreciate the advice. Do write again soon.
Yours,
TS
H2H @ 122 I wish CF nothing but grief when playing in that shirt.
If Carlsberg did grudges….
H2H, I feel exactly what I felt when TH played for them.
It ALMOST makes me want them to win and that alone makes me sick.
It’s hard for me cause my natural instinct is to want their (CF & TH) success and my natural instinct is to want Barca to fail with a preference to see lots of broken legs, so it’s quite a conflict!
That’s why I won’t ever watch him in a Barca shirt, so I won’t accidentally root for them.
H2H@121, totally agree. I felt happy for Cesc, he played like a man possessed even with no pre-season. He’s playing with the present day greats and he’ll get even better. I hate to say it but Barca are in a different universe. We’re going to really struggle without Cesc.
I’ve been promised sunshine for the last couple of days, but it’s practically non-stop grey.
I’ll have to stay in for another pint then.
Cheers.
…and any of the GT products that you have left over, Ollie.
I was watching the game last night with the rest of the family. Got up and left (politely) when Cesc came on, therefore missing the winning goal and the fight.
Mourinho… if you’re going to pick a fight, man up and don’t behave like a school girl. You can take the man out of Portugal, but….
Ollie .
Not sure where you are, but here in North Holland I’ve seen about five sunny days this summer.
It’s enough to drive one to drink. HIC.
Paris, H2H.
Mind you, I was in The Hague for 4 days, been promised practically non-stop rain and just had one single rainy afternoon after playing football there!
Hello all,
Steaming into London for the private viewing of the 125 anniversary exhibition. Looks like I’m going to be fashionably early.
I’ll have to have a couple of pints first π
People on twitter going around with the rumor that Jagielka is at the Radisson lounge with am Arsenal rep signing papers.
Uploaded this too.
http://t.co/sq3l1Cn
A few pints please barman. I need to catch up now because I’ll be out of town and will miss our next two matches. I’ll also be computer free so Arsenal have an excellent opportunity to acquire some players in my transfer rumor mongering absence. Snir, assuming that is a picture of Jakielka in a hotel lobby, does it prove anything? I would have my doubts but would be delighted to be proved wrong. π
Hello Holic’
Surely this means Wenger is not oblivious to what goes on in the drinks at this place.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/talking-heads-arsenal-v-liverpool-verdict?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+arsenal-news+%28News+Feed%29
Have a virtual pint for this fine accomplishment.
Cheers
Nicely Done Holic!
Hello holics
Have we signed anyone yet?
Harsha unfortunately not….
I had a bbq last night at my place, we ate loads and definitely drunk too much so a fresh orange juice for me please barman. Obviously we watched the game and when Cesc came on I felt oh my word you look ugly in that shirt. Also felt a bit weird and then stopped feeling sorry for myself and most of Arsenal! By avoiding him I will start to hate him I think and the more I see of him in that ugly shirt the quicker I will get over it! Barca are clearly the best at this moment but believe me nothing lasts forever.
Come on sign Jagielka please, pretty please π
Oh well, I’ll have a pint then
I think next week’s Champions league qualifier is so crucial that it may just decide our Club’s immediate future
Because no one would want to sign for us if there is no champions league football
8ball, I’m not responsible for anything just passing along what I see:)
Very well done `Holic. So much for your anonymity though, let’s hope you won’t be stalked by the Arsebollah.
Fame for ‘holic.
Pint for all in the bar π
Cheers!
Seeing the current Hearts v Spuds score is another ‘things could be worse’ moment, we could be pretty much any Scottish club at the moment. Since the early 90s the standard of football up there seems to have been on not so much a downward slope as a vertical one.
If Cesc had never existed I would still detest those diving , cheating and self important wankers.
Good to see some humour on here, thought the HT was going through a tunnell ( this post in no way helps at all I know). Think TS was right earlier, very few have the stomach to comment or speculate on Arsenal this week as the waiting should have been done at this stage. Are we there yet..
Happy Train just added some extra carriages for the game at the weekend…..free snacks and tins of beer!
Evening gooners, does anyone know if it is too late to join the FFL? Or what the code is?
Glad to see Cesc back home? Well I suppose if you like your monkey chants (directed at Marcelo) being loud and often. Strange for a team that has black players. Another example of the filthy little club and what they stand for.
Funny that nobody has mentioned that, on this forum or in the media generally.
Welcome home Cesc.
I love Arsenal, me.
That’s good ‘Holic. The whole club could do with some lovin’ right now. How was the exhibition?
I wonder if Busquets repeated his affectionate nickname for the evil Marcelo. To think it still exists in the modern era is sad. That said I’m sure J.Terry could sympathise with Busquets grievance.
http://touch.dailymotion.com/#/video/xihcmz_racist-incident-involving-sergio-busquets-and-marcelo-04-27-2011_sport
Just an observation, Dann-dan-the-defensive man not part of B’Ham’s squad tonight in their Europa League match vs Nacional. More fuel to the fire of that rumour?
Very good TS. A welcome distraction.
‘holic 147, are you perchance a little bit on the tipsy side? π
TS. Sakho wasn’t part of the PSG squad either.
I hear he’s injured, but surely that’s besides the point when it comes to gratuitous transfer speculations π
Holic
Sounds like the poifick Arsenal related activity at the mo’ π
Are you hanging around London waiting for the Mickey’s to arrive?
OK then, Ollie. Jags, Dann & Sakho it is. Looks like we really are going to build from the back & resurrect the days of 1-0 to the Arsenal.
I guess those 3 leave enough change to sign an AM or two?
TS, For what it’s worth Dann hasn’t played in either of Birmingham’s two league games either. Maybe the gaffer thinks he isn’t good enough to make their first team?
8ball @ #156
At least as credible as my gratuitous transfer speculation π
152 Ollie. Are you suggesting I has lashed into the free lager, wine, and shots at the exhibition? How very dare you…
Re: SlaSh @134: “holic’s name may be out of the bag but his face looks eerily similar to the Arsenal badge. No wonder he bleeds red and white. π
Shots too? Oooooooooo :p
At least that should put an end to me being blamed as a bad influence π
The ink on the contract is not dry yet and Fabregas got the Cup. Like he said, moving to Barca is the proudest moment of his life.
I’m so glad he’s proud… and “Go Go Go Goodbye, Glad to see you go go go…”
@NB1: Speaking of racism, Larque (who’s been commenting football games for the last 40 years in France) has been accused yesterday of making an antisemitic comment while speaking of…. Arsenal. Forget about the stupid comment but there’s something interesting in the soundbites I heard when trying to explain why he was sure that Nasri would be sold if he didn’t sign a new contract, he says something to the effect of: “I will always remember a reflection Arsene Wenger made a long time ago which summarizes the philosophy of Arsenal’s board, he told me: the day I saw the board around a table with Emirates representatives, he told me: I understood everything, that day I understood that there is one thing that really matters to the board and that’s money.”
Best you sober up sharpish ‘Holic , looks like you’ve been earmarked for a role as a conduit between the Board and the fans π
http://desigunner.wordpress.com/2011/08/18/a-fan-relations-exercise-that-can-work-wonders-for-arsenal/
Dr Z , as regards the Jam Tarts , I feel your pain π
@TS: You really are hard to please. All summer we heard you pleading for a defender, you’re offered 3 and you’re still unhappy π
Seriously it looks like there will be a massive and frenetic activity within a week. The poker game is soon over, many clubs need to buy and some have to sell.
Charlie @ 142 – so true. It’s the new League of Ireland up here I’m afraid.
On the other hand, having seen the LWC fans at close quarters tonight, evolutionary theory is totally fucked up.
Pond life each and every one of them…
Tabs – You beat me to it!!! Was just about to post it!!!
Holic – 1) I really think it could work. 2) Now that you and Roebuck are buddies you can make it happen π
Hey tabs, I saw the devil tonight – and his monkey. π
I hope the touchline abuse was hearty and sustained Dr Z π
Congrats Holic, although we appreciate that you are not in this game for the glory. Just the free booze!
Personally, I am deep in to a bit of a night. It being Thursday and all. Just imagine if that Jagielka rumour is true. I think the atmosphere might change a little.
And also the Rollers’ team selection won’t look quite so silly. There is method, Tabs….
PS – take note, Numpties = that’ll be 4 (four) gunners in my team! π
never doubted you Dr C π , though i think you have to sell if you go over the 3 man rule . I’m guessing we would all have to delve into the market if the Jags deal comes off to reduce our Gooners , apart from the appallingly mismanaged Numpties that is … π
Seriously? A large part of my team selection was based on that – see Baines at left back. Bizarrely I have Clichy at centre half….
Really must get around to reading the small print. What’s this playing the joker thing? Does Eddie Waring come back from beyond?
Pipe, please.
A cosequence of the evidence that Arsenal know that Holic exists is that they know the Happy Train exists (good), but also that Behind the Arse exists too….
perhaps we will see imminent signing of Hornets and Bees very soon? The way Arsene has been spouting forth recently does seem a touch familiar with what I have read on these pages….
No idea on the joker thing Dr C . I’ll give Stuart Hall a call , he might be able to shed some light once he stops quoting Shakespeare .
Don’t take my word for it on the 3 man rule thing , don’t know how much grace you get before you have to sell .
Pipe with some Chinese , Dr C . … All will become clear π
Gotta fly
Stuart Hall. Mad.
If Arsene turns up on Saturday wearing a Bowler Hat , we know we’re in trouble .
Mind you , that would mean there would be half a chance of PHW arriving in Sumo gear , and I for one would pay a lot of money for the privilege of seeing that π
on that note, I’ll vacate the bar for our American cousins to take over…. what happened to Stingy? Did I miss his second yellow?
Re: Dr. C @169: Four including the gaffer of course, but I can’t help thinking if the Rollers spent a little more time playing and a little bit less time rolling they might have a better chance at FFL glory. At any rate, it should be an easy headline after their mojo finally starts to kick in: Rollers on a Roll. π
Actually, the Numpties added a couple of Gunners this week, if for nothing else than to keep down the abuse from the peanut gallery, so including the gaffer that makes three. π
so easily swayed…….;)

Now you kow how I felt and what I saw on the train travelling to and from the Sh*thole last season.
It was like Deliverance meets The Hills Have Eyes only not quite so bright. If Darwin could visit SHL on a matchday, he’d re-write theory.

Thanks for all the links folks – very useful when you don’t have time to search the web, which I definitely don’t atm.
Much deserved fame ‘Holic – someone has been watching.
HT MkII development over the summer has clearly convinced the powers that be, of the sane, reasoned na ture of you organ.
Nightcap for all, please.
Re: Dr. C @172: Arsene’s summertime strateg was Hornets and Ants as I recall from ATB but if he would change out the Ants for Bees maybe we would have a fighting chance … π
@182 – sorry ‘Holic, bit of stuck cursos trouble.
Should have read ‘nature of your organ’.
*B to the OI to the L to the K*
Been to the pub for seven nights running now. Not been too drunk any of the nights but been home late and then up early for work so now I am really, really tired and feel quite under the weather. Just got to stay focused for another few hours until I can go home and have a rest – and I won’t be going setting foot in a boozer again until Saturday at around lunchtime, I can promise you that!
A few interesting links in the drinks above, and yesterday (haven’t read any papers or other sites yet) there was a headline about Traore being on the verge of a loan move to QPR and if there is any truth in that then there simply has to be another defender on his way in.
And yesterday I saw a bit of footage of Cesc playing for that team. He looked really happy, and as much as it saddens me that he’s gone I can not feel any ill will towards him. We need to move on, gnashing and wailing won’t get us forward.
Right, got some work to do and a head to hold together while doing it – a very large orange juice, please!
Morning, Holics – Happy Train about to leave Edinburgh – destination, Kings Cross London.
Bring on the Mugsmashers.
Morning Holics !!!
Djourou might be in against Mugmashers had a test today and looks very promising. Please anyone but Squillaci!
SZCZ – Sagna – JD- Kos – TV
Rambo-Frimpers-Ars/Lansbury
Theo – RVP – Ox / Ryo
Interesting!
a few random thoughts for a Friday morning:
1. Cesc has now won as many honours in 8 minutes playing for Barca as he did in 8 years playing for Arsenal. A depressing thought
2. Arsene always takes the moral high ground about ‘financial doping’ and clubs fuelled by ‘oil money’ rather than sweat, but when it comes to taking an above market value fee for Nasri, I’m sure he’ll happily take the fossil fuel cash without a moment’s hesitation.
3. I doubt we will be able to buy high calibre replacements for Cesc and Nasri until after the Udinese game. That doesn’t leave much time if we get through, and will probably cause a major panic and having to pay over-inflated prices for second tier players if we screw up. We are currently the equivalent of the fat girl at the disco
4. Last season, drawing at home 1-1 to Liverpool was a major disaster. How many of us would be delighted if we scraped a draw tomorrow?
Interesing Arsecat this Friday if you haven’t listened yet go for it!
Interesting line up there Dr C!
Let’s play Arshavin in the Middle please!
Djourou, Gibbs, Rosicky not available for Liverpool game. Miyaichi is in the squad for tomorrow
Wenger says βNasri is in the squad tomorrow and is available to be pickedβ
I’m kind of glad!
Can’t spot ‘holic

You will have to look closer at pictures 3 and 4 with a microscope Ollie π
Maybe the whistle put you off the scent…
Actually I thought it might be you on those, esp. 4 but couldn’t be arsed zooming on.
I expected you in a close up, rather than Sharleen Spiteri.
Maybe you could have been with your mate Alan π
You may notice my tongue is not hanging out in the pics, Ollie. A clear indication that in fact I didn’t see Ms S π
I did exchange pleasantries with my Block 32 mates…
I think I’ve gone blind reading Arsenal internet news…so many words with nothing being said…
A drink of your choice on me holics! Did everyone readjust their FF teams? I think we have unlimited transfers until Saturday….
Arthur @ 192
Probably means by the time you get to the ground tomorrow he will have been sold.
Arsene’s comments (to the media anyway) become more meaningless as every day passes.
It’s not what he says so much as what he does that is of more interest – there doesn’t appear to be any fruit being borne of him and Ivan “working very hard”.
Loved the comment above about being “the fat girl at the disco” – it feels very much like that to me too. But the fat girl can put one over the Mickey Mousers, surely?
I had a dream last night that SPURS would win the Ropy cup, but what was even better we beat you lot. See you there in a few months. HHHHHHA
HHHHHHA
HHHHHHA
Oye who pissed in the BowLLL!
In my opinion it is always the fat girl that gets left to f*ck with , and hopefully squash , the scousers .
2-0 to the Arse tomorrow .
*clutches rabbit foot , crosses fingers and touches wood*
I am ” touching wood ” too π
Re Nasri, I was assured by a Frenchman that Nasri wasnt leaving us , claiming inside knowledge but wouldnt be more explicit.
Another rumour no doubt, but if he was going then AW (as for Cesc) would have left him out of the squad??
Mind you, being desperately short of good players for tomorrow, AW may be keeping all options open
zico, tabs/wolfgang & Jez
At the risk of being pulled up for being politically incorrect, come 12:45 tomorrow, I’m going to be a nailed-on ‘chubby chaser’ π
UTA! (…er….)
cognac @ #202
I view it as a delaying tactic that might have some use for tomorrow.
Like Bendy on Monday night, I’m guessing he’ll be run up and down the touchline to make King Kanute think twice about going for an all-out offensive formation towards the latter stages of the game.
Can’t see Na$ri coming on. If he plays, that would set the tongues wagging. I expect him to leave sometime very soon.
Up the Chubbs!
Wolfgang, beware of splinters π
Beggars can’t be choosers TS .
I’m with you . Come on the Salad Dodgers !
We need to make sure we drink aplenty beforehand . We might wake up on Sunday with colossal regret , but no matter , fattie got he job done ! π
Wolfgang, Le Boss might be able to give you some advice regarding splinter removal… π

One of the side-effects of enjoying the contents of your bowl is that it makes a delusional mind fantasize heavily at night time. Don’t knock it, Thursday nights/Channel 5 is a fine aspiration for an LWC.
Have you said your last goodbyes to Mod-rich yet?
Any other Arsenal rejects tempting ‘Awwy to twitch the ca$h? Bankruptcy beckons….
She’s so fat at the moment , wherever you sit , you find yourself sitting next to her .
Nothing else for it . Accept the situation , whisper sweet nothings in her enormous ear, get yourself in optimum position , think of Arsenal , enjoy the ride , and hope your Arse doesn’t get burned on the light bulb .
I’m off to buy some cream cakes in the hope she is suitably motivated .

With an intro like that to #210, how about some mother-in-law jokes too? π
Take it away Mr.Manning….
Interesting points here Holics
On the other hand I certainly wouldn’t mind if he played after all we all paper thin on paper if you catch my drift?
Szczesny
Sagna – Koscielny – Verminator- Jenkinson
Ramsey – Frimpong – Arshavin
Theo – Van Persie – Ryo
*we are paper thin
Jez @189 – If you’re counting the spanish equivalent of a Charity Shield , then Cesc won 2 trophies at Arsenal as he won the Charity Shield in 04 .
Arthur@212 . I would go with your Defence . Given we’re desperately short in midfield , I’d go 4-4-2 with v-p and Theo up top .
In midfield i’d have Ramsey and Frimpong , and on the flanks AA and Oxcart , with the flying Miyaichi left to wreak havoc late on .
All this presupposes both Bendtner and Nasri are unwilling/unable to play . If they are available , I’d play Bendtner up top with VP in the No.10 role with Nasri instead of Oxcart .
If Aw is determined to go with 4-5-1 come what may , and Djourou is fit , I’d stick him in with Frimpers with Ramsey further forward and VP in his usual role .
TS@211 – She’s so ugly she has to take her Dildo out on the piss . π
I’ll get my coat .
ATG
On reflection I think I would put in Lansbury rather than Arshavin – for the extra running and tackling (controversial stuff like that) in midfield.
As for Ox or Ryo – seriously, whom amongst us could tell the difference. In playing terms, I mean! π
That’s all ok-ish, but then who the hell is on the bench??
I’ll have a drink….
Gentlemen, the only thing you need for the fat girl is alcohol (for you). Plenty of it.
So I’ve heard.
Afternoon.
(from yesterday) Ollie, I love The Hague, lived there for twenty years.
Congrats on the Arsenal.com piece ‘holic, it’s also nice to see that other blogers respect your opinions as much as we do.
Chubby lass gags, eh?
OK;
What do fat chicks do in the summer?
Sweat.
I had a late one again last night, so can I have some extra vodka in my Breakfast Mary please.
As they say every fat girl is beautiful the issue is there aint enough wine!
Afternoon ‘Holics,
It seems Cesc may not get to play for Barca after all:

if you ignore the quiet self advancement , not a bad interview from Tango man …
http://arseblog.com/arsenal-video/
PS – She’s so fat , the weather centre gives names to her farts .
It looks like my feeble attempt to make an analogy about our weakened negotiating position if we don’t get through the CL qualifier has developed a life of its own!
Interesting team selection lads.
Some of you are advocating a starting line up including Oxo, Fred Frimpong, Mr Miyachi and Jenkinson, who probably haven’t racked up 90mins PL football between them. Now I’m not scared of the Mickeys, imho they’re the most over rated team in the league (by the media) however I don’t think it would be wise to put out a starting XI with so little experience against them.
Nasri was quick to point out last week that he is still an Arsenal player, if this is indeed so, and we still pay him, then play him. The same goes for Bendy.
Our squad at the moment is not just a little thin, it’s downright anorexic with a touch of bolimia. I’d prefer that the wantaways were gone, but the simple fact is that they are still on our books and have experience in big games. I understand not using them in a CL game as that would mean they were cup-tied and decrease in value, but there are no such restrictions when it comes to league matches so they should be utilised.
tabs,
The atmospherically challenged rule! π
I know how you feel Jez .
A fellow starts out admitting to a penchant for Speedoes and ends up King of the Gooner Ladyboy Massive .
These stories do take on a life of their own . Its the modern media age we live in π
PS – She’s so fat , that when she was diagnosed with a flesh-eating virus , the Doctors gave her thirty years to live .
TS – heh π
Right , chaps , looks like we’re all taking one for the team tomorrow . I suggest we start taking on liquids in readiness .
I’ll top up H2H’s glass , now what’s everybody else having ? I’ll start with a Guinness , and Wolfie is on the half Ciders .
She’s so fat that when she walked in front of the tv I missed a whole series of The Sopranos
Breaqkfast Mary downed. I’ll have a lager please Wolfie.
I remember a lass back in the day that was so fat that when her beeper went off, people though she was backing up.
Liquids? Count me in – remember, solids are for softies.
Ice cold Guinness please.
Jez, you’ll get used to it – the Happy Train started as my state of mind round about a season and a half ago and is now on the verge of being floated on the stock Market π
Am I alone in hoping Nasri stays? I like him as a player, and with our midfield as bare as it is, we need him. If he stays quiet and puts in the effort, he could win back the fans. Of course, I am happy to be dissuaded in my opinion by a signing or six.
Perhaps we can sign the aforementioned lady. By the sound of it, she could fill the entire midfield.
Jez – not alone , I’d love a volte face but don’t think it’s gonna happen .
Drinks on the Bar fellas .
For anyone who hasn’t seen it , Arsene’s interview . No real crumbs of comfort , plays it with a straighter bat than Chris Tavare .
http://arsenalist.com/
oops , for Jez , read Joshua π³
h2h … Not particularly advocating that line up = just guessing that’s what it will be. I don’t think we’ll risk injury to Na$ri, but maybe NB is a possibility. Interesting that none of us chose Chamakh! I actually forgot all about him.
Other than those two, I don’t think is much other choice than play the kids. I’m very excited by all of them, but it is ridiculous that they are now first choice for The Arsenal in our third game of the season.
To be fair, I suppose, who could have predicted that Gibbs, JD, and Rosicky would be injured after 2 games. Oh, wait….
Too early for the CMC??
Joshua,
I’d like to see him in the team tomorrow, but I think the best course of action would be to sell him.
He has made it abundently clear that he is not willing to sign a new contract and this does not sit well with the majority of the fan base. I think it would be extreamly bad business not to take the 20plus mill that Citeh are (alledgedly) offering, rather then lose him on a Bosman next year.
Fans may forgive (not likely in my experience) but they will not forget, too many bridges have been burned I’m afraid.
There was a girl who lived next door that was so fat that when she stepped on the tail of her family’s dog they had to change its name to beaver.
Never too early Dr C , I’ll get the pipes .
She’s so fat , last time she went to the Zoo , the elephants started throwing her peanuts
In our current position it’s never too early for the CMC, Dr C.
I feel kinda bad for Chamakh, but his recent outings have been shocking, it really looks like someone has injected him with a large batch of Lee Chapman.
I saw quite a bit of Mr Myachi last season for Feyenoord, the lad could hold his own in the Ere Divisie, will be interesting to see if he can make the step up.
Last night in the bar a large gal said to me; “Your round H2H”
I replied; “So are you, you fat bitch.”
I am almost certain Nasri starts tomorrow.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/arsenal-training-19/08/11
Look at picture 8, and note which players are wearing green vests.
And in other news:
She’s so fat her arse has got it’s own postal code.
tabs and H2H, You’re probably right. Nasri hasn’t helped his cause, and if Man City are willing to pay 20 million for a player they could get for free next season, then selling him isn’t a bad idea.
I’m just nervous that all the deals that most certainly are happening behind the scenes (surely there are some) will fall through at the last minute and we’ll have to put Almunia out in midfield.
H2H @235 heh π joke of the afternoon so far . An extra dollop of Chinese in your pipe from me .
Joshua , our transfer ” tactics ” certainly very scary – even for the Arsene lovers like me . A little difficult to ” trust ” at the mo .
Still think that if/when Nasri leaves , we’ll get a signing that will ” shock and amaze ya ” .
Been banging on about Kaka for weeks now . Just don’t be surprised if it happens .
In the meantime , i think the absentees tomorrow dictate that Nasri must play .
Spotters badge for Lars, although it doesn’t really prove anything.
I’d be surprised if he didn’t feature. I hope the home fans go easy on him.
For me the biggest qestion is do we break up the blossoming Vermcielny CB partnership and stick TV in as LB or do we play an inexperieced RB out of position?
Big Bertha has so many double chins she looks like she is staring at you over a pile of pancakes.
Never thought weβd be a week into the season and looking to Na$ri of all people to a) get us out of trouble while b) not doing Β£20m+ – worth of injuries to himself.
Any anti-high blood pressure medications in the CMC?
Sheβs so fat, when she fell down the stairs everyone thought it was the beginning of EastEnders.
*gets coat*
H2H , Djourou out so he has to stick with Verm and Kos with Jenks set to kick lumps out of Downing . Another afternoon of Squill would send me over the edge .
Snowy π
She’s so fat , last time she went out in Stilettos , she came back in flip-flops .
Extra chinesse? Cheers tabs.
Ofcourse that means I have to do the; she’s got more chins then a Hong Kong phonebook’ line.
snowy@241: π
H2H@239: I can not take credit for spotting it, had it pointed out to me.
She was so fat that my car ran out of gas when I was driving around her.
Whoevers going tomorrow have a great time, have flights booked for a few matches and no matter what happens the anticipation is brilliant. 2 weeks to strengthen and we all know the league was never won (or lost) in August so am keeping the faith.
To add..She was so fat I had to roll her in flour to find the wet spot..(too far?)
Noel @ 244 – heh – think the appropriate smiley is π
And wise words. Rising tide of panic can stay in check (until the moment I actually see Squilly warming up…)
Sheβs so fat I have to get a tube and two busses just to get on her good side

Up The Arse!
And – may have already been noted above – but very interesting interviews on BBC radio5live earlier 2nite with D.Dein, followed by one with Arsene. The 2 seem to be coming out fighting re what Arsene has brought to the club during the whole of his time here …
When posting @247 saw it in a broadly positive light – BUUUUT! How positively viewed is D.dein by the current Arsenal board – so him standing up for Arsene??? PLUUUS – could Dein’s answer to the question along the lines of “is Arsenal owned/run by the right person/people” maybe/possibly/perhaps be read as bit of a puff piece for the Rusky Oligarch – who some would say – is a fraternizer with not nice people
(that may or may not include D.dein)?
Suggesting that possibly the behind the scenes politics chu-chu at the club has maybe pulled in to Total Effin Bonkersville and could help to explain why nobody’s sayin’ nothink about anythink much at the club –
I base all of the above on little or no evidence, a life time of supporting The Arse and 3 pints of Pride – oops pardon, four.
Ureds!
@Lars/236: Armand Traore was training on the pictures so the defense should be:
Woj
Sagna, Kos, Vermy, Traore
Then I agree with you that the pictures and the “fantastic spirit” and “commitment” bits points to Nasri playing so:
Frimpong
Nasri – Ramsey
And since we have our strongest attack available, there’s no question about it:
Walcott – RvP – Arshavin.
Not too shabby for a paper-thin team, eh?
1-0 to the Ar-se-nal!!!!
