Time To Focus On The Next Generation
Mar 22nd, 2013 by 'holic
If there is something positive to look forward to in this international break, and the associated lack of action for the Arsenal side we would normally be supporting, then the quarter-final of the NextGen Series is just that.
Arsenal’s U-19’s have battled through to this phase of the top European youth tournament and will host CSKA Moscow on Monday evening, kicking off at 7.00 pm at the Grove.
Having already accounted for Inter Milan, in appalling conditions, the lads will be fighting for the right to meet and beat Chelsea in the semi-final. Highly rated German youth international winger, Serge Gnabry, has been sharing his thoughts on the game and the tournament.
On playing at the Emirates…
“It’s amazing to play there with the under-21s or the under-19s. It’s a different feeling to playing at the training ground and I think it makes you more motivated. It’s a great experience and just as good a feeling to play in a great stadium like that. It’s our Club and our stadium. Every single one of us wants to play at the Emirates regularly in the future so playing there against CSKA Moscow is a really positive thing for us and I think we can use it t our advantage. We’ll prepare well for the game.”
On the character shown in the last round…
“It was amazing. The conditions were the worst ever and I think we showed our character. We fought well, adapted to the weather and made it. We went through a hard game there and I think it brought us closer together as a team. We fought and worked for each other and that has to happen against CSKA as well.”
On if they can win the tournament…
“Of course we can go all the way. We’re playing against teams from across Europe and they are good teams. We have to respect them. But we are Arsenal Football Club so we should be aiming to go as far as we can.”
Having watched a lot of reserve and youth team football down the years I cannot over-emphasise the value for money anybody will get for just £4 (adults) and £2 (U-16’s) on Monday. The lads are encouraged to get the ball down and play with a bit of swagger.
Mikel Arteta has marked your card if you are wondering just how good the current crop of youngsters are.
“We’ve got some good players coming up… In my head, there are three or four players that will become very important players for this club.”
If you really can’t make it to the game, and those living far from North London obviously will find that an issue, there will be a live stream for members on Arsenal Player. I don’t know about you, but by Monday my need to see an Arsenal team in competitive action will be paramount. let’s cheer those kids on.
When was the last home game?

The real H2H
2nd?!
I thought the Chelsea youth teams started at under27’s. 😉
Unfortunately have to work til 7.00 on Monday otherwise I’d be there.
I know TS is going, lucky fella.
Anyone else think Arteta can make a good (youth team) manager?
I love how Serge refers to Arsenal and Emirates as “OUR Club, OUR stadium” and “we are Arsenal Football Club, we should be aiming to go as far as possible” he obviously has talent so I’m glad his head seems to be in the right place too.
Ok, fake Ollie was me.
Only a very brief bit of fun to relieve the boredom of the lull.
Sorry Ollie 😉
H2H, great link @234 from the last drinks. Good to hear that young master Aaron will not be involved in the next Interbull.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2297502/Vibrating-balls-fixed-Champions-League-draw–VIDEO.html
I am certain this is true.
I am certain UEFA fix their draws.
Imposter at 308 on previous drinks indeed. Cheers ‘holic. Something to tune into on Monday, good stuff.
Ah, I see it was Trev. Naughty boy! See you next Saturday?
I think the problem with such a non-confrontational fake Ollie is it is hard to tell which one is fake. Truly Goramesque! 😉
Sadly I can’t be there on Monday but it should be a great evening. I think the players Arteta is referring to are Gnabry,Akpom ,Olsson and Bellerin. A mate of mine who watches the u21 s thinks Bellerin will be ready for the first tem squad next season. Certainly it’s nice to speculate and if Bellwrin and Toral did break through it would vindicate their decision to come to Arsenal. As long as they don’t do a Cesc.
And the ladies are well poised in the Champions League although one or two appear to be getting pregnant. Not a problem Arsene has to contend with !
Lars, thanks for the link to that Serb/Croat article. The rivalry seems really fierce, and the writer did a very good job of presenting it in great detail.
Trev, last post from last set of drinks, why are you picking on H2H, mate?
Heh Cent, I think you misinterpretated Trev’s post mate.
It’s a follow on from the vid’, not meant as malice.
Good stuff ‘h.
If I was in the neighbourhood I’d of went for sure. Did a lot of Combination games way back when, nothing as fancy as the Next Gen though.
===
Feo’s coming home;
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21905792
Correct H2H, no malice, just a joke turning Cent’s own words.
Think I’d better sign off for the night – getting myself into trouble.
Ttg @12 – absolutely, Arsene has never got pregnant. 😉
Ollie, i’ll be there next week, but it will be a Steve T style “hello” over the railings as I will have my daughter with me.
She’ll be there for Norwich too, but I’ll be back inside The Tollie for Everton.
Come on the young lads, grab the glory while you can!!!
I’ve been spending the last few late night watching the reruns of Swansea v. Arsenal in bits and pieces before drifting off to sleep, and the main impression has been of Santi and Oxlade buzzing like a pair of bellicose bees around the Swansea penalty area. Gnabry seems to be able to do the same thing. Come on the buzzing bellicose bees!!!
‘night Trev.
tabs … By far the greatest speech with a sporting theme was given in the form of a toast to the 40 Club in London in the early ’80s by barrister Sir Humphrey Tilling. In it he recounts the Four Ages of Cricket based on Shakespeare’s The Seven Ages of Man. It is utterly hilarious and had the audience in fits.
A recording was released years ago by the ABC in Australia entitled The Six Ages of Cricket (regardless he speaks of only four), but copies now appear to be as scarce as Spuds Top 4 finishes. Nothing on Youtube and most of the leads you’ll find by Googling lead nowhere.
I have the speech on tape and have transferred it to MP3. I could send you a copy by email, although the file is 11megs, so tricky.
Also, it’s hardly what you’d call ‘persuasive’ … just the best sporting speech you will ever hear.
Oskar
Trev- Arsene can’t bear children! Thinking of Santos’ belly could that be the reason behind his bad form?
Fucking weather.
For any of you (like me) who find it difficult to get to The Emirates for games, at least we can watch this match on Arsenal Player (or so I note from the Arsenal site). And the kids are worth watching – they give their all for the club.
Sorry, Mr. ‘holic, I see that I’m just reiterating what you wrote (and I missed) in the end of your article. Apologies.
Hi Oskar,
Many thanks for that. It actually wasn’t me who wanted the speech, but our friend from over the pond, Snir, for one of his assignments.
Sir Humphrey’s speech sounds great, right up my street. I’ll have a good look for it. Don’t worry about sending it by email, (as you say it sounds a bit tricky). Many thanks for offering though. I might come back to you begging if I have no luck.
Cheers.
Thanks for the post ‘Holic.
Hope the young lads can make it through. All good experience.
Afternoon all.
Coldest March 23rd on record over here, add to that a wind shield of minus twelve and no footy, this is going to be a pretty crappy Saturday.
Thank Dennis for beer, I’ll be downing a few post haste.
It’s crazy H2H. New Year’s Eve in Paris, if I recall correctly, was the warmest ever recorded or something. But since then…..
Afternoon HOllie, takeaploughson, snowy, Hollyc, et al,
It must be Christmas – about 4″ of snow here.
Either that or Hertfordshire drifted into Scotland overnight.
Trev makes puns out of nothing.
Cap duly doffed, maestro!
Going to be 77 degrees F (25 c) here tomorrow.
* covers head and sprints for the door*
But not before throwing a few bills one the bar to buy a round for my freezing mates. Cheers. Have a good weekend!
Good afternoon all.
I see you’re all wallowing in the shadows of the Interbull, Luckily for me The Champions of Africa are playing today(we’re losing 0-1 at the moment) so that will be my dose of weekend-football-I-give-a-shit-about. Be jealous people, be very jealous.
H2H @15 and Trev@17 no worries mates, I knew Trev was twisting my words so I was just trying to play along and return the favour.
Ollie knows @30.
But this is how we play the beautiful game here in the states:
http://twitter.com/ChurchOfFutbol/status/315463579727966208/photo/1
Only Theo could get injured during England training.
Still, as one door closes, and all that …
His form has been pretty poor overall, and it will open another door for Tomas and The Ox.
There may also be one little selection conundrum to solve still, assuming Santi is ok after his early substitution yesterday, and Jack Wilshere’s three weeks turn out to be three real weeks – and not those imaginary ones we’re all so used to.
At the beginning of the season, Santi Cazorla immediately became almost everyone’s favourite player with some tremendous performances, and the ease with which he slotted into the team.
When Jack came back, however, Santi seemed to slip into a much more peripheral role as he and Jack were really trying to play in the same space a lot of the time. As Jack gained fitness and became more and more the dominant figure, Santi had some pretty quiet games.
Since Jack’s recent absence, Santi has suddenly returned to his original form and been the star of the show for us again. He seems, at the moment, to be the likelier of the two to score so, given that they are both at their most dangerous in the more forward position, it will be interesting to see how the midfield shapes up on Jack’s return.
Santi seems wasted in the wide role, so how do we get the best out of both of them ?
Over to Mr Wenger. He earns all the dosh to come up with the ideas. 😉
Heh NorCal,
That’s either an amazing photo, or a very clever piece of “Photoshopping”.
Music for the afternoon:
Snow Patrol
The Drifters
Arctic Monkeys
White Plains
Froster and Allen
So bored ….. Over to you. 😉
Sorry, forgot @29 to include Hollyway2Hollyand, and 0 Cent-igrade. 🙁
Bleeding Interlull. 🙁
Not photoshopped Trev. They played a WC qualifier in a blizzard. Whoever decided playing in Denver in March was having a laugh. Somehow the US scored. I am pretty sure Costa Rica never trained in such conditions.
Campbell came on as a second half sub and didn’t do anything, but then no one really did anything.
In the absence of any football, here’s a bit of horse racing to enjoy:

And one more. Genuine horse’s name:

Last one – promise – but if you haven’t seen it, will be quite funny, especially for Lars, Ollie or anyone, really, who uses Ryanair.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAg0lUYHHFc
Btw, make sure you stay right to the end of the song – there are a couple of dummy breaks towards the end.
Trev, I’ve never been on a Ryanair flight and I never will either, but that song is indeed quite funny 🙂
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21912436
This looks very complicated. Poor Cov’.
Don’t fuck with Russia, I guess.
Or don’t let Ramsey score.
Hopefully he’ll score a brace next weekend.
Aramobitch and Usmanov.
The big football news of the day down in Kent is that Tunbridge Wells won the first leg of their FA Vase semi- final 2-0. The town is in ferment ( as much as Tunbridge Wells ever is). Wembley awaits!
This was tweeted by Rodney Marsh during the England game last night.
“San Marino set up is all wrong. They have too many plumbers in midfield.”
Love him or hate him, he can be funny at times.
Evening all. I have been to a few kids games at The Grove before. All been great nights out. Sadly I won’t be there on Monday. A pre arranged appointment with a Mr Weller and possibly a Mr Galagher will take up the vast majority of my evening. I will of course be there in spirit although will hopefully giving it large at the RAH.
Enjoy boys and girls.
Cheers Steve T, enjoy the gig!
Didn’t drop points to any of the top four, or to the clubs immediately below us. Top drawer stuff for a previously unheralded Saturday. 🙂
Hey everyone. Holic, Snir is talking about vibrating balls, I mean, really 🙂 Yes the Interdull has gotten to me too, as you can see 😉 But I too am eager to see the younsters play. I feel our lukewarm season was the reason some of them didn’t get more chances to play with the big boys 🙁 Trev, enjoyed that vid (smiling ear to ear). Now a word about Rodney Marsh. He’s partly responsible for me following the Arsenal, as I used to watch him play in Tampa. The media referred to him as ‘The Clown Prince Of Soccer’. He charmed his way into our hearts. And when asked, he said his favourite place to play was at Highbury 🙂
Mmmmm … but not for Arsenal, abb, Marsh was a great player for Fulham, QPR and Man City.
Oskar
Then again, you probably knew that! Apologies if you did… 🙁
Oskar
Oh Oskar, he played for The Tampa Bay Rowdies ! And he would sometimes sit on the ball DURING the game and just wave to everybody. Why we had never seen anyone quite like him 😉 This was when the NASL was in its infancy. Lots of players from Europe and England came to the states, when their careers were finished there. He was 35 or 36 whenhe came, blond curly hair and a devilish grin. Bit of a crush 🙂 But I must not get side tracked 😉 It was my first exposure to seeing games live in person.
Marsh really was a clown, abb, I remember him well. But he wasn’t the original ‘Clown Prince of Football’. That title belongs to the great Len Shackleton. Shack actually started his career at Arsenal, but for some reason was let go when WW2 broke out, before he played for the first XI. He spent most of his career with Bradford and Sunderland. I was fortunate to see him play (against us) at Highbury at the end of his career in the ’50s.
The guy was a magician. You mentioned Marsh sitting on the ball, well Shack was full of similar tricks – mostly to the intense irritation of his manager I understand! The following is from Wiki…
“On one occasion, 2–1 up against Arsenal with 5 minutes to go, he dribbled the ball into The Gunners’ penalty area before putting his foot on it, pretending to comb his hair while looking at his watch. Other examples include mocking opposition full-backs by playing one-twos with the corner flag, literally sitting on the ball to torment defenders who couldn’t dispossess him, and teasing a beaten goalkeeper by putting his foot on the ball on the goal line.”
Oskar
I’m drink , bitches. Haha.
Damn interBull.
So Holic, see you down there? 😉
Steve T – RAH a great venue for Weller, especially if he does some unplugged bits. I saw him and ‘surprise guest’ Noel at the then Brixton Academy well over a decade ago strumming together on acoustic guitars. Highly memorable night. Enjoy Monday and I’ll shout on your behalf at The Ems.
According to Jeorge Bird there is a doubt over Serge Gnabry
The Germany U21 boss does’nt want to release him as they have a meaningless friendly against Holland on tuesday.
From the interview cited above it would be a big blow for him to miss out playing at the Emirates.

washed up: what the fuck is the matter with all these Billy Big-Boots wankers in charge of U21 teams? How can it ever be more beneficial to a player’s development to play a pointless friendly than to play an actual competitive game at a big stadium in a big international tournament? Is having an overblown ego and complete disregard for the development of the players a requirement for being an U21 manager these days?
Indeed Lars.
These are coaches trying to develop their own careers rather than those of their players.
Personally, I think the Qatar World Cup could result in huge changes in the status of international football, unless some huge changes are made to the Qatar World Cup.
Scene: A football assosiation anywhere on the planet.
Interviewer: Thank you for showing interest in the position of our national team’s youth manager
Candidate: Yeah, er *sniff*, I was a footballer and I wants ta give sumfink back, innit. *sniffs*.
Interviewer: Very good, can you tell us what your motivation is?
Candidate: Yeah, er *sniff*, I was a footballer and I wants ta give sumfink back, I gives a ‘undred and one percent for the team innit. *sniffs*.
Interviewer: Yes, quite. How about experience in the field of management…. Do you have any?
Candidate: Yeah, er *sniff*, I was a footballer and I wants ta give sumfink back, I gives a ‘undred and one percent for the team, it’s not just about me, its a team game, innit. *sniffs*.
Interviewer: Jolly good, now, one last question.
Candidate: Yeah? *sniff*
Interviewer: Are you now, or have you ever been, a bit of a cunt?
Candidate: Yeah,*sniff* wot of it?
Interviewer: Congratulations, the job is yours.
Heh, spot on, H2H!
🙂

Ollie 45.
Where on earth are they going to send Coventry to? 😕
Seriously though, another club that was big (well, in the top flight) when I was a lad is in serious Barney due to stadium fees, which just goes to show how ridiculous and downright unfair it is that the Spammers and Citeh got public funded state of the art stadia for literaly bugger all.
It also shows you that commercialism doesn’t always work, as far as I can remember (I could be wrong) Coventry were one of the first British sides to fully embrace the idea of sponship. They changed their kit, in the early eighties to fit the logo of their sponser, who was Talbot (I think). I remember one winter there was a game where the MotD TV cameras were, that was postphoned at the last minute, back then they only had one or two matches televised per weekend, so they went to the closist ground in the vicinity where Coventry were the away team of the day. Coventry only had their Talbot logo kit with them but it had to be completly taped over due to BBC rules that prohibited advertising on shirts……
Oh how times have changed
Check out the kits from 1975 – 1983 to see the changes they made;
http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Coventry_City/Coventry_City.htm
What Lars said at 60
haha H2H at 62
Ah, cheers H2H. I remembered Peugeot on Coventry kits, not Talbot.
Well remembered on the television-specials kit.
I surprised myself there too, Ollie. 😉
Hmm. How you feeling today Norcal 🙂 ! Anyhoo, Oskar I read up on Len, what a character! And gifted to boot. Scoring goals back heeling them, wow. You know, it’s a pity there’s no one in today’s game that provides that entertainment factor. 🙁 Sigh. It’s March, and that must mean that Ollie and Trev are Birthday Boys, so happy BD, guys 🙂 Bubbly on the bar, courtesy of Lars 😉
Meerkans may have embraced “soccer”, but they haven’t quite worked out the advantages of an orange ball;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0UywBkxG90
West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has promised to bring Champions League football to the club’s new home at the Olympic Stadium, adding he will hold talks on Monday about buying a “record-breaking” striker.
Full story: Daily Express
Eeeerm. Haven’t you got Andy Carroll there already?
Surely he has the record for biggest waste of money ever.
But again, this shows you how unfair it is that they, a tin pot club with hardly a pot to piss in, can suddenly be transformed.
http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/386346/West-Ham-s-Euro-target
Still think the only way they’ll get CL football there is if they let Chelsea use it. 🙂
Heh @ H2H @ various above.
The Sun are reporting that Arsene is set to hand a trial to 22-year-old, AFCON winning, Nigerian International defender, Godfrey Oboabona. He plays for and captains a local Club here in the Nigerian Premier League, he is strong in the air, confident on the ball, likes to go about his business quietly and is quite fast. He made Drogba, and all the Ivory Coast stars, look ordinary during the last Afcon. Of all our current defenders I will liken him to Koscielny. My only fear for him is if he will develop the maturity to handle the pressure of turning out weekly for a Club as big as ours(not that he has folded under pressure before, mind).
Where are all the holics! In the last stages of Interdull Malody, I suspect. This does not bode well for the summer!!! H2H, I commend you sir, for all your efforts to keep this fine establishment open 😉
Nice one Cent.
I must admit, I’d never heard of him, which would make him a likely Wenger target.
Oboabona said: “Arsenal are my favourite club from childhood. It is the club I want to play for.”
I usualy take statements like that with a whole fistful of salt, but given his age and origin, he was probably weened on stories of Kanu, so Arsenal may indeed be “the” club. I suppose it’s up to him now, the trail will be his chance to impress.
===
Thank you abb, you flatter me.
Afternoon All,
Dear Lord it’s cold. I wouldn’t have made much of an Inuit that’s for sure. Thought my ears were gonna snap off last time I went out. Where the bloody hell is Spring?
Hehs at the Horse racing Trev. My personal favourite is this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWpRcRCUKsY
SteveT @49 – Heh at the Rodney Marsh stuff and enjoy your concert. Hope Gallagher doesn’t spoil Weller too much! 😉
Oscar – Didn’t realise that Shackleton started at Arsenal. Bit of an oversight that, letting him go. I suppose the War was good enough excuse for people to take their eyes off the ball, but even so …
Wasn’t it Shackleton who left a page blank in his autobiography for a chapter entitled “What the average Board member knows about Football”, or have I mixed him up with someone else?
H2H @62 – Heh 🙂 Gotta agree with yourself and Lars there. Stupidity seems to run in the DNA of these under 21 coaches – maybe because they’ve all got their eyes on the main prize.
H2H @65 Haha. Blimey! 🙂
You’re welcome H2H, you are one funny dude 😉 Cent, sorry, I didn’t see your contribution! Well, holics have a good one, as I must take a cat nap 😉
Nurse Abb/Snir – Vibrating balls eh? Doesn’t everyone have a pair?
H2H @65 – We are certainly not related. He is a mere imposter! Now I will admit he was sporting a fine pair of Speedoes and he can certainly bust a few moves, but he was badly let down by his incorrect footwear, and his Timmy Mallett sunglasses. Poor form. He also could have done with a wide-brimmed sunhat imo. Get it sorted Spangle boy!
He clearly had some vibrating balls though, so top marks on that score.
I must admit. and I know I’m in the clear minority, but I’ve quite enjoyed a football-free wknd. Not sure I would have particularly enjoyed either the Ems or the Tollie garden in this weather.
Stuck inside, it’s nice to catch up with some culture innit.
For anyone interested in The Smiths, I found this heart-warming Doc on YouTube.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xlwl2u_the-smiths-inside-the-smiths_music#.UU9AnBy-2So
And listened to another album from my youf for the first time in yonks today.
Bloody timeless. Forgotten how good this guy is. Loved it as much today as I did 25 years ago. Like being bathed in hot chocolate and fed grapes by a young Audrey Hepburn.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvFVbEHHhmI
Right that’s my lot, promise.
Wolfie.
I shouda known, even though he had an impressive collection of banana hamocks, those bathslippers he was sporting on the beach were a definite no no and beneath one of fine breding.
Plus, the Ghetto Blaster?
Surely the discerning, dancing, sharp cross dressed s/he-male would prefer to rock his tunes via a (b)i-pod. 🙂
Exactly right Mr H2H.
I think Spangle Boy was just an attention seeker! 😉
For some of us, Speedoes are a way of life, not just a day out at the beach!
H2H @78, indeed, Sir, indeed.
*Waves at Nurse Abb.*
David fan over here Tabs.
“Dead bees on a cake” was the first thing I’ve heard from him, I am that young, but Dad Lurky often used to mention Japan and his previous solo albums. So, I checked most of them as a student.
Thank you for the link, had some sort of Proust-ian reminiscence of the good old days, on the night when stupid local elections take place in sunny Macedonia, the management is watching “That ’70s Show” for the anniversary fifth time and there is no Arsenal game or news to cheer you up.
Good stuff Lurky.
Amazing body of work behind him. Never opted for the easy option. Think his voice is fantastic. Loved the Dead Bees album.
H2H drinker of the day no question. But there was a good reason no orange ball was used in the Colorado snowstorm. The Costa Ricans might have been able to see it.
Never really got into The Smiths. Listening to a bunch of whiney mancs not really my thing. Noel and Liam can go eat a dick too. 😉
I remember Japan, the modern romantics who weren’t. David Sylvian used to get pretty pissed if you’d call him one, even though he sported more make-up then most chicks at the time. Again not really my thing, but I do appriciate it’s musical content.
Everytime I see photo’s of those girly boys it reminds me of a Dave Chappelle/Charlie Murphy sketch, very funny:
http://vimeo.com/1720918
Heh 8Ball, cunning plan indeed.
Playing in white shirts was pretty nifty idea too. 😉
Haha, heh at the sketch H2H. 🙂
The Smiths whiney Mancs though? May your God forgive you! 😉
Bit harsh on DS there mate. 😉
Given that he was glamming it up and wearing make up all through Punk, I think I’ll allow him his “I’m not a New Romantic” protests.
History has proved him right too. Just my opinion, but he’s got more talent in his little finger than the rest of the New Romantic fuckwits put together, who even now can be seen fighting for the scraps of celebrity
Meanwhile David Sylvian, who assiduosly spurns the spotlight, is still getting critical acclaim for his current work. Sans make up too.
Think he’s marvellous.
evening all
now there’s a co-inky-dink
i was talking just this very yesterday about the smiths to a friend of mine whose young son is now a huge smiths fan
‘huge’ being one of the operative words – it was the ‘young’ son who got the beers in at the bar
the cruel march of time ,eh
30 bloody years ago was Hand in Glove
still a cracker tune
needless to say the young fella was reminded in great detail by his oul fella of the state of my hair and apparel during those times
still – free beer – so , every cloud
H2H, I like both the Smiths and most of the solo work by Morrissey, and the latter really is a Grade A wanker even though he’s written some really good songs. Was never really into Oasis though, I was always on the Blur side of that particular fence. I know many think that Damon Albarn is also a plonker but I’ve never really understood why.
Free beer is the best beer, cba? 🙂
Interviews of Spanish players before France vs Spain, and the players interviewed are…. Nacho and Santi. No idea why (they are hardly regular starters for Spain), but that’s nice!
absotively and posilutely , Lars
it most certainly is
although at a pinch and with a good following wind i can manage to down a few i’ve bought myself – these however are to be kept to a minimum
Yeah, I probably was a bit harsh on DS. He was indeed around long before the others. Some of the music of the mid 80’s was ok, although it wouldn’t of been a smart move to dress up like those lot in my old neighbourhood…. You’d need the make up just to cover up all the cuts and bruises you’d most likely incur. 😉
In my mid teens I was more into music from the 50’s and 60’s, you could find me every Wednesday in the Camden Palace for the Twist n Shout nights, (yes, on a school night) I moved to Ibiza (for the first time) when I was 16/17 and worked in the club scene since then up to a few years ago. If I’m not mistaken some of his (DS) stuff with Ryuichi Sakamoto has been remixed for the clubs though.
The Smiths, Panic=Okay. The rest, MEH! 🙂
He’s a Cuntski fan for a start, Lars….
Cba – Haha, 🙂 Frankly Mr Shankly, I’ll have another Beer please …
Lars – As always mate, completely agree with you. “Cigarettes and Alcohol”, though openly and disgracefully derivative, did allow me, if only for a brief period of time, to forget that Noel Gallagher looks like one of the Thunderbirds’ ugly cousins. Haven’t rated much of his work since, despite him telling all and sundry that he is the greatest musician ever. ever, ever.
Damon Albarn and Blur however …
Ollie, Nacho, not a regular starter!?
Ever been to a Tex-Mex? 😀
I’m back in the saddle: the rather random assist is mine!
Well in tabs!
heh H2H!
Ollie = assistmeister.
Tabs = Well in, son.
I tabs’d it.
And its in! 🙂
As for Morrissey, agree with Lars there too. He can be a total nutbag. Given that I often struggle to separate the artist from his art, when he has one of his increasingly nutbag moments, I prefer to concentrate on what a good bloke Johnny Marr appears to be.
H2H – Doesn’t surprise me that the Sakamoto collaborations have been used in Ibetha. Plenty of scope there I would have thought.
Cheers chaps, and as always, the nonchalant assist from Ollie.
Heh H2H 🙂
Tabs and others that enjoyed that vid (Chappelle/Murphy)

my knees and lower back regretted it for a week
silly bollix that i am
Why did I call “Definitely Maybe” “Cigarettes and Alcohol”?
Senility definitely setting in.

Of course David Sylvian and Steve Jansen didn’t take their new surnames from the New York Dolls.
Oh no! 😉
he mighta done , tabs , but i was down the front gettin my superfreak on
🙂
Haha 🙂
I see TaBS tried his best to TaBS’ it but managed, somehow, to score a goal off his bum, well in Sir. I guess that would be the highlight of this Interbull.
Thank you Cent 🙂

Ollie, It’s usually really hard to get parking so close to home. Fucked up.

Tabs:
Thanks for the memories in relation to DS – as for the Smiths, well they will forever be timeless. I’m totally with Lars though, Mozzer always came across as a total wanker even if he was artistically brilliant. The late 70’s/80’s music contained many great artists, many of which have stood the test of time….The Smiths…..New Order…..The Nutty Boys……….and of course heh, Adam and the Ants..! He was on Jools quite recently with the same frilly shirt and make up. For a second I thought Wolfgang was making a cameo…….
Thanks for the Eddie Murphy laugh H2H.
Heh Joe, you’re welcome mate.
Loved New Order too.
Was never much of a Madness fan I’m afraid. As for Mr Goddard, I’m afraid I took agin ‘im, as soon as my sister professed her undying love for him.
Sibling rivalry, ’tis a terrible thing. 🙂
Good to hear he’s back performing though, after his recent travails.
You’re welcome Joe…….
But that’s his elder brother, Charlie.
Madness, now we’re talking. Mark Bedford also lived across from the Tollie.

I can’t say I was ever a Madness fan per se, but whether you liked them or not – they were/are an institution. Whatever they lacked in finesse, they certainly made up for in effort and they managed to create a vibe that in some way defined those times. For example, while I’m not a religious person in any conceivable way, there there would be a “shrine in my synagogue” devoted to Leonard Cohen. But Leonard wouldn’t be the music of choice at a party. Horses for courses I guess – so long as none of them are No 4..!

cba,
Have to confess to not being familiar with either Rudi or Victim, not that I expected to be.
Quite enjoyed both of those tracks though. Punk77 informs me that Mike Joyce (later of The Smiths) was also in Victim.
Well there you go.
Joe – Like myself a bit of Leonard Cohen. Man’s a poet. Small doses though.
the guy outta rudi was stood beside me at the new york dolls gig that morrissey was at
they didn’t talk even though they both ran the new york dolls fan club together in the ’70s
it’s a small world tabs
its a small world

Indeed Cba 🙂
‘Tis a small world!
A major star of The Magic Roundabout too.
Lest we forget.
Hehs above.
Cheers abb for the b’day greeting – some memory ! Saturday was the day. 😉
More breaks in this season than Ryan Shawcross’ personal video collection. Agree with Tabs though that being out at football would not have been pleasant this weekend, -2C here at 3.00pm this afternoon.
And Talbot, lest we forget. 😉
at the dylan down of the sun and in the dougal we shall remember him
And who didn’t have a school shirt made by Brian Ilon ?
Happy B’day Trev!
And blimey, you have some memory if you remember who made your school shirts. 😉

Here’s a bit of nostalgia you may have missed, The Beatles singing a capella. Not so much a capella, I believe, as with the backing track removed … but listen to those glorious harmonies. The Hollies eat your hearts out!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh5vgULGH-A
And for those who thought Abba only made bubble gum music, here is the last track they recorded – The Day Before You Came. Given their break-up it’s hard to imagine what Bjorn was thinking when he wrote it, or what Agnetha thought as she sang it. Dammit she was a fine looking woman…

Yes, good track that one by Abba, Oskar.
I discovered that via my daughter.
Nostalgia’s not what it used to be though. 😉
I think England are guilty of thinking ahead to more serious matters such as the Ashes later this year, Trev, and not taking NZ seriously. I am seriously embarrassed, although I expect England to draw this one same as the other two in the series.
But at least Aussie is doing even worse in India!
Oskar
Cba – Ah just read your 153 again. That’ll learn me. Tolly English Ale eh? Now there’s a thing. Hope it’s living up to the name.
Oskar – He was a hard man that Bjorn. He didn’t know he was Bjorn, being married to Agnetha. He’s a Gooner though, so we can forgive him.
Or was that Benni?

Oskar
i need to expedite my manifesto
Ah a simple play on words Oskar, but I’m sure your right. 40 lashes for Bjorn. Benny had all the talent. Poor old Agnetha, she’s gone a bit Greta Garbo I believe.

For those of you who do like The Smiths;
http://askmepr.wordpress.com/2013/03/19/the-smiths-very-rare-rehearsal-recording-pre-rough-trade/
Morning. I was wondering how there was such a flurry of interlully activity, now I see. Blame Moz.
Never got The Smiths or Morrisey. Boring drivel if you ask me. Now, The Stone Rises on the other hand?????? Awesome.
Loved both Oasis and Blur. Loved Ocean Colour Scene who are probably one of the most under rated bands of that time, even more.
Never did like the new romantic stuff. I was still playing stuff like The Jam, The Clash and The Chords whilst others plastered their faces with max factor and turned dustbin liners into trousers.
Morning all. Belated happy bday Trev.
The Stone Rises, Steve? Are they a tribute band? 😉
Oh, I missed Trev’s birthday?
Belated wishes from here too then.
Morning peeps.
Got one of those food and alcohol expos this afternoon. It’s in thAFAS Stadium (AZ stadium) where Oranje will be training.
Todays plan: Have a few bevvys and hurl a rock at CvC.
Catch y’all later………. maybe. 😉
We’ll bring you, er, oranges in jail, H2H. You’ll be our hero.
@183
Disagree slightly about Morissey and The Smiths both have a few decent tunes, Panic is awesome and International Playboy is just top.
Could not agree more about Ocean Colour Scene though, bloody fantastic group….such a shame they drifted apart.
As for Oasis and Blur and The Stones Roses (I Hope) all absolute classic bands and will be remembered in twenty to thirty years……will Eminem?
Belated happy’s Trev.
Good memory Abb 😉
Stone Roses….. A phone keypad and sausage fingers do not go well together.
Depressed. OCS are still going. They have just released a new album and are still great live.
I have to admit I never saw OCS as anything else than boring sub-Oasis. Bloody Brummies too 😉
To be fair though, I don’t think I’ve seen them live (maybe briefly at some festival).
You’ve not lived then Ollie. Cut down on the TV work and go gigging.
🙂
I used to go gigging all the time before we moved to a new Stadium enabling me to go to more games 😉
Proof here, no OCS : 😉
http://perso.numericable.fr/~angolivi/_private/GigsIndex.htm
Thanks all for the b’day wishes. You are all very welcome to forget or ignore it, as I try to. 😉
Plastic Bertrand for you Ollie.
Sorry, the only French “music” act I know. (Apart from Edith Piaff !). 😉
I’ve never liked Giggs. 🙁
Trev, heh at puns.
Did you use Plastic Bertrand on purpose? It’s ‘French’ you should have used the “” for. He’s from the other side of the Quiévrain, you know….

Chamakh? Well in Snir.
Well in Snir.
Only one question for today…
WHEN IS THE RED HAIRED GOON TOURING??
The name alone gets my fandom, but the music was pretty damn good (heavy Smiths influence in The Protected Room I thought).
Afternoon All,
Esso – Cheers for posting that. Won’t have a chance to listen ’til tonight, but thanks. Gonna be pretty raw I’m guessing.
I see the musical chit-chat shows no sign of abating. Good stuff.
Loved The Stone Roses, though tragically far too little output. Saw them live at Spike Island. Makes me laugh how that do is now described as the seminal “end of an era” gig. It bloody rained, the Band were dots on the horizon, and the sound system was utter pants. Got completely wasted though, so every cloud …
I know music is very subjective – beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that- but I do find it strange when The Smiths can be so easily dismissed whilst The Stone Roses and Oasis are extolled. Both Bands acknowledge the huge influence of The Smiths on their work. Mind you, in the case of The Tracey brothers, they seem to have been “influenced” (nudge nudge) by just about everybody. Ho hum.
Just my opinion, but I don’t think that in 50 years time, Oasis will be remembered much for anything other than nicking a load of stuff and selling a load of records on the back of it.
Fantastic list of gigs Ollie. (I’ll forgive you Travis!)
So, I´m a bit bored, and was wondering where on the interweb I could get a decent bit of chat about The Arsenal, music and all things related? Oh, and if there´s alcohol, that would be good too… 🙂
How are you all??
i saw Billy Graham at Upton Park in 80 something

Alcohol is good Dr C.
Just settling down for an evening of NextGen.
Looking forward to it…
That’s a cue for a joke about a man on crutches and a fella with a speech impediment, cba.
…but I can’t be arsed 😉
Afternoon Doc.
Hey Cba. Look on the bright side. You looked evil in the eye and came through it.
I felt pretty much the same when Graham Roberts was in the local one Saturday night, 2 or 3 years ago.
good day all
it appeared to be populated by teenagers on the pull
several of whom were going round – 50’s style – with ice cream for sale from wooden crate type boxes around their necks
iffin they were as naive and pure as they appeared to have been
i’m guessing – to this day – they’re wondering why one row in particular – the one with eyes like saucers – bought most of their wares
you haven’t lived ’til you’ve had half a dozen cornettos and mars bars at a good ole revival meetin’
“praise the lord”
A faith healer came to our town last week and was asking for sick volunteers to go up on stage.
Brian who had a bad speech impediment and Johnny who walked with crutches went up to try their luck
The faith healer told them to go behind the curtain and pray to God.
Ok he said “Johnny if you believe, cast away your crutches and walk in the arms of God”
Two crutches came flying over the curtain and landed on the stage in front of the healer.
“Now Brian”, he continued “If you believe, say something for us all. Speak my friend with ease”
Brian replied.. “Dohnnys fallwen over”
What I find most persuasive about the Smiths and indeed one of the defining traits of the really successful bands is that their music transcends time and generations. The Smiths are arguably as important and more influential today than they ever really were at the time. It’s only in retrospect you realise just how good and special they were.
The same could be said about Bowie / Pixies / The Who / Waits etc. Completely original artists who reaffirm / define different genres of music. There are very few artists like that today – because that talent isn’t promoted or nurtured. Instead its cloned, packaged and homogenised by the varying X factor / “Talent” shows and so we get “alco-pops” instead of Moonshine!
aahhhh poitin

Wish I could watch the NextGen match, Holic. Think my patients wouyld notice? Probably not….
Massive heh @210.
Jack Wilshere is back…on Twitter, for now.
cba knows 😉
What tims is kick-off?
Why, Jack, oh why?
Or does it mean he’s out for the rest of the season? 😉
Ollie, re Flapjacks.
That must be an April Fools day story that got out early.
So, they want to replace a ‘dangerous’ triangular Flapjack with a square or rectangular one. In other words, three dangerous corners are replaced by four dangerous corners !!
They could always just stop people throwing them at all …..
We’ve all gone stark staring bonkers.
“Hey, you boy, put that down! You’ll have someone’s eye out with that Flapjack !”
That really takes the biscuit.
I know Trev, it’s just silly, isn’t it?
What’s the Jack Wilshere stuff ?
(Props for yet another pun, of course)
Just about sobered up…..
Ahh, piece of cake really Ollie.
Quick. Emergency. Get NorCal some more booze.
Or at least Surgical Spirit…
Seriously Dr C. Still have a good 12 hours of work left today. One of the orthopedist must have thrown marbles in the door of the nursing home, lots of broken hips.
I sobered up for this!!! I need a drink…..
Don’t have Arsenal Player, any streams for tonight game, anyone?
COYYG!
http://nutjob.eu/njtv1.html
try this for size Lurky
Great play, really should have scored there. Disappointingly placed header from there.
Gnabry almost in with great header!
Benn buffering for about a minute now, bugger….
Thanks Washed up, it works.
COYG!
Stream is working fine now, but the sound is slightly ahead of the image, which is a bit confusing.
Oooo that was close.
Yeah, I’m back (report later)
Buffering again….. and now connection lost
W’ up link works fine, Ollie (admitedly I have no sound on this laptop)
go with this stream Ollie
http://nutjob.eu/njtv1.html
it works better than Arse Player for me
NorCal
I always find that I am sooo much better in the afternoons after a long lunch….! 🙂
Mind you, I don´t play with sharp instruments!
Staying with Arseplayer. I hard-refreshed and it was OK.
Anyway, half-time. Should be ahead really, but at least we didn’t concede from that corner in added added time. Would have been a bit too ‘typical’. 😉
stream has got a bit stroppy since I wrote that anyway.
It might be the fault of a Mondee night snifter and some sketchy back-drinking – but Billy Graham played up front for the Q.P.R. men – really?
Ahh – The Smiths was at their last gig at Brixton Academy in ’88 (I think). Top o’ the shop. Pete Shelley did a solo set too, if memory serves. Nice work on The Pablo thingy tapes Esso. You might well be pleasantly surprised Tabs how decent some of their good stuff sounds there – considering.
And I really don’t get this -ve stuff re Oasis – they’re easily the third best Beatles tribute band I’ve ever heard.
Happy belated Trev.
And comon the young’uns.
Sound still ahead of picture…
afternoon, bargooners. just started watching the game, and eisfeld shows he can move and shoot, then shanks a pass into row 5. just about right.
i don’t think cska has been across midfield but once or twice this half, i don’t know about the first.
anyone know who is on the pitch for us, aside from eisfeld? who’s that big no. 3, for example?
btw, happy belateds to trev.
happy the interbull is over shortly, too.
norcal, give three breaths of the mask to the paitent, one for the anesthesiologist, rinse, repeat. that ought to do ya.
oooooh, gnarby with a great goal at the end of an arsenalesque break.
GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGUENABRY!
Or
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNABRY!
Depending which of the co-commentators you trust.
1-0 either way! 😉
Gnreat Gnoal Gnabry.
1-0 to young Ar-se-nal
hullollie. was that the iceman with the assist?
Great goal from Thierry Gnabry there – no pressure, young man! But very reminiscent. 😉
does anyone have a lineup card? i see gnarby, iceman, and damien (a good omen), but don’t know the rest by sight.
Ollie I think the “G” in Gnabry’s name is silent as in LasaGna.
Yep Ollie, it’s a silent ‘G’, as in ‘broken piano’. 😉
In German, it would be a hard ‘G’.
iceman nearly commeth…if he’d made that one, i might have, too.
I see the Russians signed Bavin, or is that Bevin.
And Lev Yakin, a nearly very famous name in goal.
Which one is Avislegsov ? 😉
‘Serge Gnabry’. I’ve decided he’s French.
Which means….er, I still don’t know how I’d pronounce his name.
Niabry, maybe.
Or Gnabry with a hard G, really.
I know no word that starts with gna….
Actually, Gnafron is a puppet in Guignol shows. No idea how you pronounce the name though….
They also have Cut-Off.
We have ‘Anger’.
heh, trev.
there’s some quick thinking going on out there with our boys tonight. very good interplay, and decisions.
and almost a second goal from whoever seems to be our left back, no. 3. should have been in, too, after a great 1-2 and run.
What a great move…..
Shame no goal to cap it off.
Keep going forward, young man – Don’t look back M Angha 😉
if he looks back, he may want to be bellerin, loudly.
Scruz,
I have seen Angha (3) a couple of times before, both times as a right back. Interesting he’s doing so well tonight on the left.
Bellerin looks very good – hope the new Medical Centre have removed all his Barca DNA.
Scruz, I will try a brief description of our Young’uns;
our keeper is Dejan Illiev.
Bellerin plays right full-back, loves to join the attack and is fair in complexion.
Angha plays left full-back, wear a mo-hawk hairstlyle and will probably be the tallest guy in Red and White.
Hayden is the darker of the two centre-backs, Hajrovic is the other half.
Ollson, plays in midfield, has a very slender frame and wears the most outragous hairstyle.
Ebecilo is the darkest in complexion of our three midfielders, I think he’s also the tallest.
I believe you already know Eisfield, Gnabry, Yennaris and Akpom.
Trev, from what I’ve read(and seen a few times)Angha is practically comfortable anywhere across the defence line.
The boys are playing quite well, it has to be said.
Lacking a bit of end product at the moment, sounds familiar? 😉
#243 and lester
interestingly i think i saw buzzcocks in the brixton academy on their return gigs that same year
as regards the smiths
i saw them when morrissey introduced the next song as a new one – i hope you like it – twas heaven knows i’m miserable now
the frank chickens were supporting them
cheers, trev and cent. cent, that’s great description, i’ll keep it posted while i watch, to figure.
now akpom is out for ansah. hopefully he has it (the ansah).
We need another goal but can’t break through.
Maybe the sub is the Ansaw to that particular problem.
Cent, he doesn’t look too bad in attack!
Much stronger and quicker than earlier in the season.
scruz, you mean he ‘does’ it?
He has a song already.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz9LExIgP3I
Let’s hope Angha is not the new JET then (see today’s blog from arseblog)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz3wDnqKQtk
Chuba Akpom off, Zak Ansah on – i’m confused. Angha still on.
Should nickname this team ‘The Anagrams’.
Trev, or better still “The A Team” ;).
Cent
Ebicellio hails from a place not too far away from where my bar is. His brother was a regular for Ajax. (moved in the last transfer window to Ukraine)
Some remarkable interplay here from a bunch of 18 year olds.
What a shot! The Ice Man.
Trev @273, maybe that explains why the coaches have played him more frequently as a full-back; so that he can naturally join the attack without hurting the team’s defensive balance.
well played CBA – would you Adam and New Year’s Eve it – I saw The Frank Chickens in 2011 (i think – it’s not getting any easier) at Stewart Lee’s 1981 do at the RFH. I would p’raps marginally rather it had been The Smiths get back together gig – but The Chickens held their own (and why shouldn’t they).
Still 1-0 to The GnArsenal!
Well deserved victory!
Where was that AL ? In Peckham ? 😉
CSKA Gone for a Burton. 😉
H2H, good to know that. Hopefully, he can turn out to be way more successful than his brother.
Sorry, completely different style, I’m not sure how this got into my head, but it did :

(there’s a tenuous Oasis link of course)
Well in boys! Now go to Lake Como and tear Chelsea a brand new one.
I thought the Ajax Ebecilio was quite good, didn’t know he left.
By way of Hendon Trev.
According to the official Arsenal photographer (on twitter), early Gnabry header went over the line.
I did wonder.
He was/is a decent player Ollie, he’s now at Metaloerh Donetsk.
Cent, I think Kyle would do well to be as succesful as Lorenzo.
Good old Wikipaedia –
“Martin Yves Angha-Lotscher is a Swiss footballer who plays centre back for Arsenal in the Premier League”.
Mmmmm…..
Another little bit of trivia to dazzle (or bore) your friends with.
Ebecillio’s cousin is Jeffrey Bruma (ex Chav)
Wonder if I should stay for another assist.
Must be a sweeper H2H. 😉
Heh
All right then.
Get In.
NextGen finals are in Como?
Lovely touristy Lake around there, they’re a lucky bunch.
Well in H2H.
Shot ( in the dark).
Somebody tell NorCal…..
Well I should have left it how I first wrote it.
It said ” Shit ( in the dark )”.
That would have been more appropriate.
haha
Ollie 292, saw that on Twitter too.
H2H @293, Lorenzo must be/have been pretty good then, still won’t hurt if Kyle went on to become way better than him, would it?
295, thanks for the info.
Well in for the 3rd century.
Norcal @303, don’t worry, mate, TaBS will be very proud of you.
Well Played The Arsenal.
Enjoyed that. Cheers for the link Washed Up.
Well deserved victory. Mightily impressed with the boys performance, especially the second half.
Serge Gnabry was the obvious star of the show, first time I’ve watched him for a full 90 where he’s lived up to the hype. Others though caught the eye.
Hector Bellerin offered more evidence that those hoping for a RB to be signed in the event that Bac decides to move on in the Summer will be disappointed.
The one that really caught my eye was Isaac Hayden at the back. I thought he was fantastic. Did everything that was asked of him with authority and looked a real footballer.
Martin Angha was another one who can be very proud of his night’s work. I’m not convinced that he’s a left back, but he had a great game. Terrific athlete. Superb post-match interview too.
First time I’ve seen Kris Olssen, and thought he looked great. Always made time for himself and was very tidy in possession.
I’ve read from others that see far more of these games than I do that Eisfeld doesn’t have enough to make it at Arsenal. That judgement appears premature to me. He always looks impressive whenever I’ve seen him and that free kick at the end would have been a fitting reward for his performance had it dipped an inch lower.
So onto Lake Como then. Madness that Arsenal aren’t playing Chelsea in London. Would have drawn a big crowd I think, but hey ho.
