Arsenal Ladies Triumph Down Wembley Way
May 14th, 2016 by 'holic
The Arsenal Ladies have won their fourteenth FA Cup Final this afternoon, but their first at Wembley in front of a record crowd of 32,912. I saw lots of Arsenal supporters (including some ‘holics!) took the opportunity of going along and if Twitter was anything to go by even more watched the BBC coverage of the Final.
Chelsea, and their clutch of former Gunners, went into the match as firm favourites, but as the match unfolded is was clear that Pedro Martinez Losa had brought back his most experienced players with an effective game plan to subdue the holders.
The Arsenal manager recalled Emma Mitchell, Fara Williams, Jordan Nobbs, Asisat Oshoala, and 37 year old Kelly Smith after a disappointing goalless draw at Birmingham. From the first whistle Arsenal were on the front foot and inside the opening minute Danielle Carter had the Chelsea goalkeeper, Swedish international Hedvig Lindahl, looking back nervously but her long-range chip landed in the roof of the net.
Chelsea, with only one change from the team that defeated the Gunners 2-0 in the League a few weeks ago, were being effectively pressured off the ball and unable to establish any rhythm by the hard-working Gunners. Carter was the tormenter in chief, giving Hannah Blundell a torrid time down Chelsea’a right flank. In the eighteenth minute she produced what would prove to be the decisive moment of the match.
I had seen much talk on social media of the standard of the Ladies game today. References to a lack of technical ability might have been more valid a decade ago, but the winning goal today was as good a winner as Wembley in it’s various forms has witnessed. Carter killed a lofted ball superbly and not for the first time twisted her full-back one way, then the other, before cutting into the box and curling an absolutely wonderful right foot effort over Lindahl and inside the far post.
Anybody expecting the Gunners to retreat into their shell and defend for their lives were soon made to realise that was not the case. To be fair Chelsea did fashion a couple of opportunities in the opening half. Sari van Veenendaal, so impressive in her first season and keeping Emma Byrne out of the Arsenal goal, denied Fran Kirby’s somewhat hopeful effort at the near post. Then Ji So-yun, Chelsea’s normally dangerous playmaker, hurried an effort over the crossbar.
Arsenal could, perhaps should, have doubled their advantage either side of half-time. Smith was denied by her former team-mate, Katy Chapman, and then put Oshoala in the clear but the Nigerian international failed to make a clean contact and the chance was gone. There was more of the same at the start of the second-half and only the crossbar came to the rescue of the West London club when Smith got on the end of an Oshoala cross.
Arsenal’s high pressing started to catch up with them in the final quarter of the contest, but the defence now came into their own. Chelsea seemed incapable of creating any clear opportunities, whilst on the break Carter remained a real threat and she drew a fine save out of Lindahl. The Blues best opportunity probably fell to the surprisingly anonymous Ji, but again she was off target.
A late Alex Scott block ensured she would be climbing the steps to collect the trophy. In a lovely touch the ageless Smith joined her to share the magical moment. Arsenal had come into the contest as underdogs, but showed that reports of their demise are indeed premature. There is much to look forward to in the summer.
Well played girls.

Danielle Carter is hot.
Cheers H! Great match report. Have you (and all the boys & girls) have a great day out tomorrow.
Up The Arse!
That we have, Esso. Praying for the Geordies to give us a reason to party tomorrow night, otherwise good riddance to this season. 🙂
The women’s game is growing and many will find, once they have given it a chance, that it is just as entertaining as the men’s game.
I was really impressed with the girls today and you saw a very similar game to me Holic. The tactics were spot on, we pressed them with vigour and purpose and moved the ball really well and the defence and area in front of the defence was as solid as a rock .
Everybody played well although Oshoala has yet to develop the poise to go with her pace and ability.
I entirely concur about the standard of the women’s game . The level of fitness and skill was excellent and there are one or two of our men’s first team who should learn to press and track back with the diligence and passion the ladies showed today. Guess who?
Those girls made me proud to be a Gooner. Chelsea tried to buy our best players but we replaced them with better ones. Top stuff!
A fine end of season preview, Holic.
See you tomorrow I hope.
Well done, ladies – men’s and women’s FA Cup record holders. Any bit of wreckage is worth clinging to right now.
Hope to see Tomas Rosicky one more time tomorrow. We would have had one of the very best if only he had been able to stay fit. With better luck we would have seen the attacking talents of Rosicky, van Persie and Diaby at their peak, together in our side for a number of seasons. That would have been quite a blend of talents.
Here’s hoping the Toon can help us put a shine on the end of a season I am personally sick of, given that the FA are not going to help out with the points deduction that Tottenham’s behaviour merited against Chelsea.
In reality, even a big win against the current Aston Villa will not mean very much in terms of the state of our squad.
The summer transfer window will show whether the club is allowed to spend the funds it has accummulated, to try to match at least the fans’ ambitions in the declared absence of the owner’s.
Holic mates will indeed be missed over the summer. The football, for me for once, will not.
Loved Danielle Carter’s Goal.
Well Done Arsenal Ladies.
Hope to see you in the usual place, kind Sir Mc Holic!!
Thanks for the match report, H and well done the Ladies. It was very welcome as I couldn’t watch the match and only managed to see that belter of a goal on my phone. Do you think Dan Carter would take a few workshops for our first team forwards?
COYG
Cheers H.
And cheers all- a pleasure to be joining the fine company above. A strong top ten this week!
Great report, I didn’t see any of it so was extra glad of it. Well done those ladies. Fine work!
Nice preview too, boss.
St. Totteringham’s Day is still possible. Who knows what will happen? But even the chance of it is more than most of us expected at this point and Spuds do have a way of shooting themselves in the foot. I trust someone has made appropriate arrangements for their pre-game Italian meal?
Whatever happens, some things will always be true…

Be happy, holic and holics!
Afternoon all.
I saw some of the girls playing. I thought that on the whole they played well. With a bit more luck the score line would have looked a lot more comfortable. Well done to them. I then tuned in to see the other Dan Carter fluff his lines in Lyon. That was also very enjoyable.
So, today’s game. What do we expect? Who knows? Even after 37 games I still have no idea what Arsenal team will show up on the day. Whichever one it is there can surely be no excuses against possibly the worst team in the top flight since Swindon?
Sat on the train now. The Tollie beckons. The final league table won’t lie. Wherever we end up will be exactly where we deserve to be. Wherever that will be we all know that it’s been another season of what might have been and under achievement. That said, if the spuds fluff their lines in Geordieland it will be highly amusing. I do hope the 2 week out of date lasagna that I sent up arrived this morning.
To those going, I hope to see some of you later. To those not, I raise a glass to you all right now.
Spuds to draw in Newcastle. Arsenal to win 14-0 and come second on goal difference. Now that would be worth a cheeky scoop or two.
Enjoy people.
Steve T and all Tollie-bound: a glass raised to you by the far-flungs. Hope you have a joyous day to pull down the curtain on this season.
Just have a feeling that this season has one last twist left in it and not a nasty one, I pray.
Hope you are right about that twist, Ned.
As one of the farther of the far-flungs, I have set three games to record today: Ours, which I will also watch live of course, as well as Spurs and Chelsea, the last one just to see Ranieri’s reception, but I second your greeting to Steve T and any others who will be there at the game.
Arteta is among the substitutes but Rosicky isn’t. 🙁
Arsenal XI: Cech, Bellerin, Gabriel, Koscielny, Monreal, Coquelin, Cazorla, Wilshere, Ozil, Sanchez, Giroud.
Subs: Gibbs, Arteta, Ospina, Ramsey, Campbell, Elneny, Iwobi.
Just hope Santi and Jack come through this game unscathed.
any luck with a good stream?
well said and seen about the Arsenal women, thanks for the report.
today I want to see the excitement, the fluidity, and the goals that a team with santi cazirla can bring. here’s to all at this bar, one last round for this season!
og!! great ball in, perfect header 🙂
Giroud, get in!!!!
Get in!!!!!
Come on!!!!
😀
manure Bournemouth abandoned? anyone know why?
ah, suspicious pkg found.
Newcastle score!
COME ON BARCODEEEEEEEEESSSS!
In a week where the terror alert relating to Ireland was raised to “brown trousers”, it’s better to be safe than sorry, even if it will probably turn out to be the groundsman’s bacon sarnies.
Can it be??
Spurs gonna loose!!
Newcastle get their second!!!
Need to score another. Cannot afford a draw.
Not watching our game but Cottee says, “Tippy tappy football and need to shoot”??
How surprising!
https://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/1400×931416-e1414349084959.jpg
Newcastle 2-0 scum at the half. God, please, please, please have it stay just this way.
Cottee doesn’t speak in proper sentences, Cynic? What is surprising about that? ?
Come on Arsenal and the mighty Toon!!!!!!!!
Coney Totty, as Danny Baker once called him.
We haven’t looked great though, to be honest, and the big question in my mind is,
Is Gabriel good enough for Arsenal? I hope so but have been losing hope for quite a while and that first half was abysmal. We need to score at least one more because I fear Villa will score at least one due to an error by Gabriel.
Whats up at old toilet?
Bomb threat or something?
Yes indeed. Another goal needed.
Jack losing his cool. At alexis …?
Grt a grip.
An actual bomb found in the stand at old toilet. .
Jaysus.
Need to score another. Villa are applying pressure and we will look silly if Spurs lose and we don’t win. Nix the thought.
Spurs draw one back, 2-1 at SDA.
Yeah.
We dont look very convincing.
Mitrovic sent off.
Soft red that.
Newcastle 3-1 Spurs. Arsenal need to score one.
Most blatant dive you will ever see by Sissoko, but who cares. He missed him by a foot and a half at least.
Giroud!!!!!
great move and goal, 2-0
that was a leg breaker by mitrovic. disgusting and fully deserving a red, even if against the spuds. and a blatant dive too by sissoko
and we score!!!!!!!!!!
GET IN GIROUUUUUUUDDDDDD!!!!
19th assist for Ozil. At least one more please.
and another! yes!!
Nearly 4-1 then, which would have doubled the hilarity.
hatrick!
GET IN GIROUUUUUUUDDDDDD!!!! X 3
Giroud hat trick.
OG!!
Newcastle, with ten men, have got Spurs pants down. They should be 4 or 5-1 up
We need a striker badly this summer!
Haven’t seen him yet but I’ve heard about certain French fella on a hat trick this afternoon.
And another one on one missed by Sissoko. Spurs getting dry bummed here
4 for Newcastle!
4-1. !!!
Newcastle 4
Aaahhfhaaahhjjjaaahahhjkgdfaaàaaaaaaaaaaa
Hahahahaaaaaàaaaaaaaasgjaghahagajdbnhff
Newcastle4-1. Ha ha.
HAHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA!
Spudtastic…can always rely on them!
😀
They just hit the bar, then scored a fourth.
Andros Townsend has a smile on his face like he’s won the lottery back to back.
SCENES
5!
5-1. Spuds shredded!!!! St Totteringham’s day!!!
Wow!
Come on now. 6-1!!! Lets see it.
5-1
Pochettinho OUT 😀 😀
Spuds will always, always find a way to bottle it.
Artetaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
COme on!!!!!!!!

Had Newcastle appointed Rafa in Dec instead of continuing with that disaster Steve McClaren they would still be in the PL.
hahahahah tottenumb bottle their best season and arteta gets a goal!
Arteta scores. What a send off.
Anyone else putting a few Newcy Broon’s on the bar tonight ?
4-0 ARTETA !!!
Top moment for a top bloke.

😀
Choking Cockerels.. hhahahaahahahah!
..and i think a congratulations to Petr Cech too.. Golden Gloves?!!
😀
Happy St Totteringham’s Day everyone! Possibly our most underachieving league campaign ever under Arsene, and supposedly the best Spuds team since the invention of color TV, and yet… 🙂
Never in doubt.
Happy St. Totteringham’s one and all!
One club in North London.
My Old Man said “be a Tottnum fan.”
I said…
Great class and camaraderie shown by Giroud and others to run to TR7 after the second goal and celebrate with him. That’s what we are about. That’s what makes us special.
Lest we forget

Dr F
Spot on as usual. Loved seeing that.
Well done gunners.
And nice work NUFC. I dislike the fat spanish waiter a little less now.
But just a little.
ha ha ha ha… Spuds losers..
I am not one to laugh at other people’s misery.
But this lot just bring it on themselves, don’t they? 5-1 at a relegated Newcastle when all they needed was a point?
And cocks actually on their shirts?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHHA!
Well in, GSD but mind the gap!!!!!!
Another miracle from St.Totteringham. He’s got a naughty or devilish sense of humour though waiting till the last moment to deliver our customary yearly triumph. Remember to burn a candle to his memory. Burn two for next season repetition.
A large pack of spurs jersey wearing folk descended in my local this morning. I was thinking, oh great…do i have to deal with some gloating arseholes this morning.
The smug smirks of these people slolwy withered away.
At one point, after goal #4 i said the the AFC supporter next to me, “wow, down 4-1 and a man up. Thats fooking embarrassing.” And said it just loud enough for half the room to hear it!
One poor lady heard me, turned and with red-rimmed eyes whispered “oh, it really is.”
Ha. Ha!!!
Now come in AW, an active summer please.
Cheers holics.
Homer @ 98: Thanks. Yes, that was a great moment.
Almost a fairytale ending for captain Mikel as well. A sublime through ball to Elneny too from which he should have scored. What a positive steadying influence he has been.
In their own different ways, three very special servants to our club. Lest we forget, Flamini was instrumental in our midfield solidity in his return and contributed significantly to the FA cup win.
But none more special than super Tom Rosicky!!
Cheers bt8.
A fine effort, if I say so myself.
We have just finished ten points behind Leicester City.
And 21 points above Chelsea.
Crazy game.
And second is our best finish in ages. Thankyou St. Tott. Pierre is right- that’s a miracle! But only burn one candle and keep the faith. I lit one 21 years ago and it still hasn’t gone out…
POCH just said it was his ‘worst day as a manager..’
Hardly surprising when you’re managing a bunch of cocks…
😀
Love you all.
Pochettino also says his players were on holiday. Maybe they will release a DVD entitled “Holiday in Newcastle”?
From the BBC website he is quoted as follows:
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino: “First of all I would like to apologise to our fans, I think they don’t deserve all that happened today on the pitch and I apologise. It was a shame and diffcult to understand
“In the last couple of weeks when you do not play with 100 per cent it is impossible to win games and after Chelsea something happened. We cannot manage games in the right way.
“I am very disappointed because our fans don’t deserve it, it is difficult to go tonight and see my boys and my wife. I think it is unbelievable and we are very disappointed.
“We had the possibility to stay second and how we lost and how we gave to the opponent that is relegated, in the first and second half, they score three goals with 10 players it is the worst day as a manager and I feel very disappointed. We need to be sure that never happens again and need to improve our mentality. We were on holiday and that is the reality.”
Happy St. Totteringham’s Day!!!!
“I am very disappointed because our fans don’t deserve it”
Yes they do.

Heh, BB @ 106 and BJ @111.

I was at the Home of Football today to watch what in all honesty was a pretty excruciating match. We were pretty tepid in the first half and in the early part of the second got even worse .
The great joy was the regular…and usually hilarious ….news from Tyneside. As a relegated team with ten men started to take them apart we stepped on the gas and Giroud notched twice in quick succession. The Arteta goal which the dubious goals committee will hopefully bestow on him was the icing on the cake.
We started to play when Jack went off and Elneny came on, make of that what you will. Santi looked in decent nick but Sanchez did very little right today and Ozil wasn’t on top form. Gabriel as ever contributed a serious error but Villa were too bad to take advantage and Cech could have spent most of the afternoon in a deckchair.
I’m delighted to finish above the Totts but this was a season when we never deserved to win the league and much needs to be done to improve our squad next year given the vast sums our rivals will spend.
We have some wonderful talent in the u 21s but we also need some top quality additions in midfield and upfront.
No doubt we will debate this endlessly in the months to come. For tonight let us enjoy the annual feast day of St. Totteringham and rejoice??????????
Should have won the league, but a St. Totteringham’s Day at the death will do me.
Here’s to getting our shit together for next year.
FOYS…never in doubt.
Cheers, Guv’

Confirmation that, had Leicester had not been as exceptional as they were, we would have won the league!
😆
Well, that was fun. I don’t think I have ever been at a football match and laughed as much. I’ve been to comedy nights and not laughed as much.
Tottenham Hotspur. The only team ever to come third in a two horse race.
Still in the Tolly and still laughing.
I simply cannot stop laughing.
The comedic genius of the LWC’s is to be admired.
What a wonderful end to poor poor season.
Thanks ‘Holic for another splendid seasons blogging.
I may not comment to much these days ,but always enjoy reading.
See ya next year!
Steve T is right.
We were in fits of laughter all afternoon.
When Newcastle scored their first we thought it was a nice little gee up. Their second gave us hope of an amazing result but we expected Spurs to come back and they did to 2-1. Then after the penalty it was laughter all the way. I don’t know whether that laughter released the tension in our game but it seemed to. But as it went to four and five people were doubled over in laughter, sheer uncontrolled hysterics.
As we left the ground my mate said ‘ Only Tottenham could stuff up like this’. That was so true . It was almost surreal.I suspect there will be mayhem on the Totts’ chat rooms tonight .
The Premier League match between Manchester United and Bournemouth was called off after a suspect package was found shortly before kick-off and a controlled explosion carried out.
Police said the item had “accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise”.
————
Just what are they training for there???!!!
The inevitability of Van Balls staying for another season or the arrival of the Moaning one? Hahahahahah!!!
For more implosions and controlled detonations… see this coming Tuesday when ManU play..!
😀
Well Mystic Ned, you are indeed a saucy one, old chap.
A pretty decent glance into the crystal ball back at Number 11, I grant you, and Lady Nina and I have indeed been celebrating but a quick one ?
The old girl doesn’t do quick ones, I’m often sorry to say. We are on holidays at the moment, in the most inappropriately named Virgin Islands of all places, and cocktails has been the order of the day to celebrate St Totts.
It was Sex On The Beach for starters and back in the hotel, having showered off those awkward little sand deposits, she surprised me with a Long Slow Screw Up Against The Wall.
So what do you think I’ve decided to end the evening with ?
A bloody good long sleep.
See you for elevenses.

I wonder if Poch brought the wrong wine to his Sralex lunch. If I was him I’d consider appealing against the contract he signed mid-week…
Utterly hilarious.
Carlsberg don’t do utter fuck ups but if they did they would do a St Totteringham’s day massacre. Thank you Rafa.
Ha fucking ha, fucking ha.
As TTG observes, we weren’t particularly pleasant to watch today, despite the 4 goals, but the news from the Tyne made for a rather entertaining afternoon.

MIND THE GAP YOU LOSERZZZZZZ
Well, I never thought anything would beat ‘lasagnagate’ but this emphatically does! This time there’s a rumour going round that a Hong Kong syndicate, betting on who would finish in the top two, has been threatening the spuds players. It surely couldn’t be that they are just a team of chokers.
Its happened again, its happened again, Tottenham Hotspur, its happened again. La – la – la!!!!
Thanks for another great season of reports, ‘holic, a monumental effort that is greatly appreciated. It can’t have been easy at times, but I imagine the last one will give you as much pleasure to write as I’m sure it will give us to read. Can’t wait for a another memorable headline to mark a memorable day!
St Totteringham…..you’ve done it again. I’m currently having my sides stitched up again after too much laughing. In reality, it was the only way this mad-cap season could end. Post mortems are for a later time.
Sad to see MA8 & TR7 leave the club, both wonderful players and personalities – true members of The Arsenal. Flim-Flam also did his best but nowhere in the same category.
Thanks again to our irreplaceable neighbours for the annual Comedy Show special 🙂
In case you haven’t heard about it there was a special poch’s mystery grand masterplan for today:
“I think everyone is missing poch’s masterplan. No one will come in and buy any of our players judging by the last few appearances. Also the scum celebrate 4th as a trophy they must be fucking ecstatic at 2nd and won’t think about sacking the muppet so they will be just as shite next season think on COYS!!!! ”
It’s good to see it is not all gloom and doom it the Spuds forums. They are a very enjoyable and amusing bunch it has to be said. They already make plans and proections about next year champions league groups and their potential opponents.
It’s May 16th today.
And this time, at the end of their best season in 50 + years and our worst performances in over 20, they don’t even have the excuse of dodgy lasagne. i do wonder what their excuse will be. There is a simple explanation of course: the natural order.

@Chris
That article also said spending with respect to a balanced budget… !
And that not everything depends on the amount.. availability and desire of the player and their club seems to be the main reason that new signings come here..or not!
Nothing new to me, pretty much the same as it was last season…in terms of ‘available cash within budget’ that is. Money or lack of was never the main issue.
I do wonder if Arsene is able to get anyone really good( as in better than our crop) to commit to us for any number of time, seeing that his own future beyond the coming season, is not certain at all.
Would like to see Ozil and Alexis sign an extension first and foremost.. otherwise it could well become a case of one step forward and two steps back..!
@GSD
Wonder who..if anyone is going to take any responsibility and be held accountable. Hope at least the fans get some sort of reimbursement for the time wastage and scare!
It’s almost as absurd ..as losing 5-1 to 10 men in a match that would only require a draw to finish above your bitter rivals for the first time in 2 decades or so.. HAHHAHAAHHA!
😀
