I'm Sorry Matty – And Peter Sellers!
Oct 8th, 2007 by 'holic
It seems my view of Mathieu Flamini’s performance against Sunderland was not shared by all, and I am absolutely delighted that a number of fans are leaping to his defence. I should clarify what I meant.
This was probably the first performance of the season where the two full-backs, the ‘Samsonesque’ Bacary Sagna, and Gael Clichy, were not at the races. Alongside Flamini they have been significant reasons for Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season.
The full-backs are key to the way Arsenal play and critical because of the players ahead of them, particularly the newly shorn Sagna. I think in all honesty against Sunderland that Flamini was distracted from his main task by the amount of work he found he had to do to cover his colleague.
Anyway, I’m not about to disagree too strongly with anybody about a player who has deservedly kept a World Cup winner on the bench so far this season. In my eyes everybody is allowed an off-day or two, especially if not everyone agrees that it was!
Want fifteen minutes of fame?
Then check out the comments on the Sunderland article. Oliver Thurgood, a producer for ESPN is in town next week looking for people to contribute to a new series called ‘Happy Endings’ and featuring, it would appear, a number of Arsenal v Manchester United fixtures. He seems to have blitzed Arsenal sites with pleas for help today so if you do get in touch please mention old ‘holic.
And finally…
My imagination runs away with me sometimes into absurd little alleyways. I have been reading tonight about the latest potential addition to Chelsea’s training staff. Am I alone in picturing Avram Grant in a ‘Clouseau” overcoat and hat, walking into the changing room only to be attacked by a martial arts expert. His response? After me everybody, in a hammy French accent….
‘Not now Ten Cato!’
Sorry, I’ll get me coat.

Hahahahaha….
Imagination running amok. Good one!
Goonerholic, you’d be a great addition to the ESPN Classic program broadcasting old Arsenal games. Maybe you’re not much to look at on camera, I wouldn’t know, but you can spin a yarn. I’ll put in a word for you.
I’m planning to make it to the Bolton game on October 20th. Where’s a good place to have pre-game pints? What about post-game pints? The last time I was in London, I enjoyed drafts of Old Peculiar – now that’s a delicious pint. I’m in the market for more of the same.
Thanks for clarifying your comments on Matty – I’m havin’ a laugh, of course, but supporters can get touchy. I had a big bite taken out of my ass recently for saying one of the lads played well – sold’m short, I’m told, and I probably did.
Well thanks for pointing out I have a face for radio 433! 😉 Sadly next week I will not be in London until the day of the Bolton game, which is a shame because I was at all of the games they are showing.
I am pretty much tied up either side of Bolton myself or I would offer to come on an ‘Old Peculier’ (check correct spelling, it’s a Theakstons beer, and a good one) hunt with you.
If you do find it keep the pub in mind and maybe we can have a pint at the Man United game.
By the way, is anybody having trouble getting Arseblog this morning? I keep timing out. Let’s hope it is a minor server malfunction and nothing more fat and sinister. 🙁
Update, ignore the last comment, and if you are fat and sinister I offer an unreserved apology. Looks like it’s just a slow server morning.
How dare you Goonerholic, Flamini is playing outstandingly! I bite my thumb at thee. But that is very brave to backtrack 🙂
Have just written an article on the Gilberto/Flamini debate, check it out on my website if you’re interested (which you must be 😉

Tim I’ve corrected your link, so hopefully people will be able to find their way to you. 😉
Thanks Goonerholic!
