Stop The Press!

There are certain things you have to do if you run a fans website or a blog. Principally one is required to ridicule the work of the mainstream media as often as possible. There are opportunities aplenty it has to be said as stories are ‘created’ from thin air to satisfy editors’ lust for column inches, and publishers desire for cash!
Now and again though you have to hold your hands up (usually in private!) and acknowledge the professional journalists craft. Tonight I have to say I have been delayed in my venture onto the world wide web because I had to read a piece by Martin Samuel a couple of times (if you’ll pardon the pun!). I’ll pass no comment, rather just provide the link and let you make your own mind up.
Actually I will pass one comment. As I have already said, and I am as guilty as anyone here, we ‘enthusiasts’ are quick to highlight the worst aspects of journalism in the mainstream. I’m delighted for the opportunity to redress the balance ever so slightly.
I’m loathe to link to an article that that proves the alternative view. When I did something similar last week a ‘match report’ transformed into something entirely different during the course of a morning. Today the Mail carries this headline online,
Arsenal ordered to pay £2.2m for teen star
but as the article more accurately reports ‘the Spanish club won a civil court ruling against the player yesterday’.
I’ve no doubt that the Gunners will quite happily come to some agreement with young Fran Merida that will ensure he is not forced to busk on the platform at Arsenal station for a year or two yet. That is far from the assertion by a half-pissed sub-editor that they are responsible for this judgement however.
Talking of half-pissed, I have a job to finish. (If you do have a sub-editor’s vacancy please wait until I have had a few coffees in the morning and mail gooner@goonerholic.com). Thank you Martin Samuel, and goodnight.
One Response to “Stop The Press!”
As you say all too occasionally you can find a decent piece of football journalism. It’s rare to be able to pick them out of the oceans of absolute tosh. Sadly it seems even rarer for readers to be able to see the difference.
