A Wet Weekend
Sep 5th, 2008 by 'holic
A cursory glance through the window makes me rather pleased there is not a game to preview this week. It would be a miserable journey as the British version of the monsoon season takes a hold.
I did wonder briefly whether I should look to take in one of the Football League games over the weekend. Closest to me will see Cheltenham host Huddersfield Town, but frankly, even if the tickets were free and the Dagenham Girl Pipers were performing in the buff at half-time, you still could not drag me there.
Looks as though I will take in a couple of internationals on the small screen tomorrow instead. I can kickstart my weekend with Arsenal TV tonight. I did watch the fans forum last Friday for the first time in a while, and thoroughly enjoyable it was too.
The forum and the live reserve games are the programmes I have watched most on the channel, and make the outlay worthwhile for me. I also caught a glimpse of the history of Arsenal last night covering the early-to-mid seventies, which was a golden period for me as I started following the club all over the place.
Little did we think in those days that we would reach the stage where there is wall to wall coverage of all things Arsenal. If you were lucky they would be on one of the three featured games on Match of the Day, or the Big Match. You would be truly grateful if a cup tie warranted a brief highlights showing in midweek.
I suppose it was because there was so little coverage that we used to go every week if possible. It helped that tickets were cheap as chips and dear old British Rail would roll out their clapped out carriages to shunt us to away games on the cheap.
Therein probably lies the reason why I cannot be bothered to drag my arse off to Cheltenham tomorrow. Even in the third tier of English football tickets are now twenty quid. Three gallons of petrol doubles the cost of the trip. Do I really want to spend that much money, watching a team I have no affiliation with, and possibly getting soaked to the skin at the same time?
No, I think I’ll sit here and google ‘Dagenham Girl Pipers in the buff’ instead.

‘holic – you sound as pissed off as I am………..
After an angst ridden summer, we now have to suffer a mind numbing two week break whilst the England team will no doubt stumble their way towards a ‘will they’, ‘won’t they qualify’ scenario.
If that’s not bad enough we are now being teased about the prospect of the ‘is he fit’, ‘isn’t he fit’ Apiah joining to become our midfield enforcer. – never gonna happen
Blog sites are discussing anything from chocolate to Kir Royale (don’t take it personally) because the football is such a drag.
I don’t have the emotional energy to get upset at the prospect of ‘citeh rising out of the sands of the Sahara (I know geographically incorrect)
The weather’s shite, the footies shite, the lack of footies shite, the economy’s shite.
You’re right ‘holic, I need a stiff drink – what do you suggest?
I shouldn’t have another drink really…….
Haven’t had a drink KT – that’s the problem. Completely out of fine red wine, just found a bottle of tiger beer (yuk!) in the bottom of the fridge that I’m about to open.
Everybody should have another drink…
I know I am 🙂
holic.
I know you say your old but…………………..

Tampa – LOL, I just finished googling the “girls” and… they leave a bit wanting. In fact, I’d pay them $20 to wear pants. ‘Holic, you gotta lay off the everclear/absynthe cocktails.
BTW, I’ll just take my abby neat please!
Heh, Tampa, reunions feature people that old. Don’t you have cheerleader reunions out there? Doesn’t mean to say they are the ones waving their pom-poms about today 🙂
I need a drink to survive these internationals.
Just a plain kir ce soir please
Centipedes.
Yes, Rickey is a Kunte. The proof is at B&Q Gallows Corner
I’ll have some aspirin please.
