And Still It Continues…

Sep 8th, 2008 by 'holic

The wet weekend has come to a close, and we are now anticipating a wet Tuesday. There’s a surprise. Some things just keep pouring down as sure as night follows day. A week after the transfer window closed there is still frantic speculation.

Most remarkable of all is the complete and utter non-story about the non-move for Stephane M’bia. (Please, don’t scream ‘WHO?’ like that, you’ll scare the pets.) The 22 year old Rennes and Cameroon midfielder (that’s who!) has obviously decided to do the job most players leave to their agents.

“Arsenal made contact in the last hours of the past market but the club did not want to let me go.” he is quoted as saying. “Rennes are looking to improve my pay”.

So at the last moment you were a last resort Mr M’bia? The last kid standing in hope when the sides had almost been picked, and the Arsenal captain picked the short straw. But wait, you were just holding out for a bit of sympathy and some more sweets from the teacher all along. I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for a massively improved offer from Rennes if I were you.

The buzz about Steven Appiah won’t go away, and I suspect his continuing availability has much to do with the man himself having to decide between a guaranteed salary with a mid-table club, or a pay as you play deal with someone bigger. His situation cannot have been helped by West Ham losing Alan Curbishley and currently having nobody at the tiller.

He made his first appearance in ten months on Friday in a Ghana side beaten by Libya, and acknowledged his lack of fitness. “A proper game involves a lot of movement and there were times when I could not cope with the pace. There were times when I was kept going on pure determination.”

Wherever he ends up the supporters will have to temper their usual excitement at a major capture and show tremendous patience as he hopefully regains his match fitness. If the pace of a game is an issue he will need a while to settle in the Premiership.

I really am dreading the new year. Normally January is a month to anticipate keenly, with the first couple of FA Cup ties, and hopefully a Beer Cup semi-final to look forward to. However, if transfer speculation is this rife nearly four months before the next window opens, what will it be like when the Christmas decorations are coming down?

Stephane M’bia to sign for Wigan, anyone?

Pedantic maybe, but I would suggest ‘I wouldn’t hold my breath’, sounds more coherent.

I dont see M’bia coming to us in Jan but maybe i’m being pessimistic. but its clear wenger pulled out all the stops to sign a DM at the end of the window and was not successful. It makes you wonder whether AW is as happy with the squad as he says he is.

    Apiah for Arsenal…..WHAT A JOKE!!!!
He is not even good enough for Fenebache….released. What makes anyone thinkhe is good enough for BPL???? He is trying very hard to get a playing contract. Talking shop to attract interest. No way to Arsenal.

    Charlie,

What the hell is the BPL???? You mean the Premier League? So sick of people using these bloody acronyms!

He was released because he had a fall out with the coach. That’s it. Appiah has always been quality and would be a good addition to the squad in the same way fish face has been a good edition.

Neither are a permanent fix mind…

    A Camomile tea? No thanks…

Look I don’t care if they’re on special offer.

I’ll have a glass of St Emilion, and that’ll be the end of it. Oh, and some of those frittes in a basket.
