Arsenal Hope For Tasty Champions League Draw
Aug 6th, 2009 by 'holic
On the eve of the final pre-season friendly in Valencia, Arsenal await, with some apprehension I would imagine, the draw for the final qualifying round of the European Champions League.
The official website briefly looks at the potential opponents from ‘these Spanish giants’, Atletico Madrid, to ‘the youngest team in the competition’, FC Timisoara.
Fiorentina would, I suspect, be second only to the Spaniards as a team you would rather avoid, whilst Celtic and Anderlecht probably hover just beneath the Rumanians in the order of preference.
Personally speaking I wouldn’t worry too much about the opponents. It’s early season. We are fresh. We have the pedigree. A good attitude and disciplined performance will take us past any of those sides. Only a lack of belief or preparation stands between us and a lucrative twelfth consecutive crack at old big ears.
But yes, I’ll settle for the team named after an ice-cream please. We’ll give them a good licking! Not forgetting that the beer in Rumania will be cheap as chips. Oh yes, those Tiramisu nights are the longest!
Sorry about that.
Good luck Jammathon
Readers of Third-Gen will already be aware of a new magazine-style offering on Jammathon’s blog. Click here to view the first issue of Portal. It’s a brave undertaking for a blogger, and will take some upkeep, even with just a monthly release schedule. Be aware it will take a short while to load, but once it has there are a variety of ways to navigate the content. If I were you I would just get in there and get click-happy!
All the best with it Jammy!
Indoctrinating The Grandsons
I may not be too quick with my view of the game in Valencia. With the season proper about to start I have to take this last opportunity to take the management up to see the family for a long weekend. It is therefore doubtful I will see the game until I get back next Tuesday, although having said that I did buy them an HD cable the last time we went northwards so we could view a stream on their large flatscreen.
I’ll have to play that one by ear, but wish me luck with operation ‘Junior Gunners’. The other side of their family is trying frantically to lure the two little’uns to the dark (red) side of Manchester. My mission is vital. I will not be beaten.
Grandad ‘holic will succeed!

Pint of Guinness please,
Got to do it, ‘Holic. I’m working on my nieces currently, but their best friend’s father is a manc fan, so it’s a similar competition. A cup to raise for the league or Champions League this season would go a long way to cementing the young’uns’ Gunnerdom.
I think we’ve shown we could take out Atletico and any of the other eligible opponents by our pre-season performances. I admit I’m a bit worried about Super Tom Rosicky’s latest injury knock, particularly as it appears to be another hamstring issue, and the 2 he has seem to be made of cotton candy. Although that could open the door to young Jack Wilshere making his presence felt in the squad, and judging by his performances in the Emirates Cup, that is no bad thing.
holic i got the same problem – 2 boys and their family on their mums side are manc scum mad ffs – one of my boys is a gooner thru and thru and actually hates the mancs and shouts at other man u tops in the street!! hes only 3 – but the other one aged 4 has had his head turned a bit. we NEED a trophy this year to help turn this around! HELP
C’mon AW buy us a beast of a player, someone who doesnt even like to have the ball near him – just goes onto the pitch to boot the oposition’s hardman up in the air!! haha well u know what i mean!! haha
Good luck agent ‘holic.
I’ll have a pint of guinness please.
Love that spirit ‘Holic. Yes we can mince any one of these teams. Bring it on! But of course minnows would be better.
Thanks for pointing out Third Gen (it’s among the very top blogs IMHO). Portal is indeed very impressive, must have been a lot of work!
And good luck with the grandson’s indoctrination, it’s going to be a long battle but with the current crop at United (as it stands), you may end up with quite a few opportunities this season…
Good luck ‘holic. Although it is absolutely VITAL that you succeed in this mission, no pressure there then.
Thanks all, I’ll rally do my best, trust me.
Looks like I’ve had no Cliff Richard fans in. Good. Got away with the most contrived line ever then 🙂
Holic,
Your blogs are always a great read. However I find your quite obvious intimate knowledge of Cliff a tad disturbing. Oh well, each to their own I guess.
Mods Rule.
Good luck in Manc land.
[…] Due to seeding reasons, the only teams we can actually face are Fiorentina, Athletico Madrid, Anderlecht, Celtic and Timosaura (a Romanian mix of a Dinosaur and a Tiramisu, apologies to Goonerholic). […]
Good luck, ‘holic, thou shalt not be beaten.
I’ll have a brandy to celebrate your victory already.
All the best holic.
Luckily for me my bro is as die hard a gooner as me and my neice will soon be one 🙂
I got her her first baby sized gooner dress .
‘holic, you must not fail. You are Luke Skywalker fighting Darth Vader (or Patrick Viera v Roy Keane).
Good luck.
All the very best as you begin mission ‘indoctrinate’ ‘holic.
As a Lardner now leaving well away from the smoke – I’m very proud to say I still managed to succeed in the indoctrination mission of my two boys – who have little or no affinity to London (apart from extended family in South London). They are monster Arsenal fans, we get to as many games as we can afford and will take every opportunity to tell anyone they meet.
I’m sure you’ll keep on believing fella 🙂
So did grandad succeed? I think we should be told.
