'Holic In Return To Old Love Exclusive
Feb 1st, 2010 by 'holic
I wasn’t looking forward to it, in all honesty. Some people enjoy going to see old flames, curious I guess to see if a spark remains or if the parting was a good idea after all. John Terry pops home to see his wife every now and then for much the same reason.
Problem with this particular love is the fact that the grip on the old heartstrings is stronger than ever. Every now and again I look at the new girl on the block, smile at her fresh complexion, delight in the tasteful make-up being applied, but then from nowhere the vision of my true love pops into my head.
I haven’t seen her since May 2006, but with half an hour to kill yesterday I decided the time was right to go and see her one more time. Maybe the last? I had to know if the tears would gush as they did on that day nearly four years ago. The parting was both wonderful and painful.
“Be strong, you silly old sod.” I girded my loins, walked to the end of her road, and looked up. There she was. With greater age has come a greater external beauty. Carefully made up, she sparkled in the winter sun. I was smitten again, but happy smitten, not sad.
I felt the desire to be inside her once more (steamy stuff, what?). All the bars and locks would not keep me from my quest. The reconstructive surgery had clearly rejuvenated parts that others can rarely reach these days, but some unsightly scars are also evident.
I’m so glad we met up again. I’m so pleased that generations to come will still be able to admire her beauty, if only from the outside. We had some incredible times together. Now though, it is time to move on.
I still love you though, old girl, and I always will.

Nice pictures ‘holic. It is still the old place at heart.
A throwback to the glory days when the team had desire, commitment and a strong British feel to it.
Went to visit the ground recently – in the cold light of day – for much the same reasons. The exterior is about as good as we can expect it to look, but the interior looked like a series of soulless allotments in a Butlins holiday camp. The architect should be shot.
Still, I’m glad it’s there.
Nice pics
I wonder who lives in my seat now
Some ingrate of a sponger who is something in the media, I expect Jackster.
At the same time painful and heartening to look at the old girl. She was my first Arsenal memory, where I fell in love with the club, and while we’ll never see her done up properly again, at the very least the exterior remains as a reminder of the great times we had. Wonderful post, ‘Holic.
Thanks for this…although it was slightly painful to reminisce. Highbury will always be in our hearts.
‘ Holic nice piece mate certainly brings back memories ๐
at last a decent post
Highbury forever !!!!! We lost our soul when we moved to that concrete jungle.
Out of curiosity about how much does the condo cost?
Thank ‘holic. You just brought back a memory for me of Lehman in the middle of the field pumping his fists- everyone singing his name- after we put Madrid out…
Coming from California on limited funds, I only went to Highbury a few times. But I’ll never forget that night, that’s for sure….
The year 1948, standing on the raised manhole cover (at the corner of the East Stand opposite end to the clock) this was my spot. We were host to Sunderland and winning when an announcement came over the broadcast system for my uncle to come to the general office. The one and only time I entered the `marble halls`.
The message was simple, my mother had passed away in the north of England. So when I read your tale of `Highbury Revisited` it brought back memories of my childhood. Thank you.
hey dazza, did you never feel the Irish presence there and a good strong one at that?. were you so fcuking blind not too see jennings(almunia)o’leary (cygan) rice (clichy) staple ton (eduardo) Brady (denilson) etc and all the others
dazza if you had a brain you would be dangerous, there was always a strong Irish presence at arsenal until this french revolutionary idiot decided he was so clever as too change the face of football for all time and sadly while he was attempting to do that he stifled ยฃ50 million into his bank account and made us the laughing stock of football worldwide
would any of the Irish above have given displays in an arsenal jersey like the absolute horror and humiliation we witnessed yesterday? its a yes or no answer dazza if you have the balls to answer truthfully. forgetting our past has led us to this embarrassment, forgetting what we are and who we are and and what made us and another ยฃ50 million will be stolen from yours and my pocket if we dont do something immediately
Lovely piece ‘Holic. I’m glad we were able to give her a proper goodbye. What a masterclass by Henry.
Tom, I think that’s a bit harsh. When you talk about the greatest players to ever wear the shirt, names like Bergkamp and Henry inevitably come up. While we were very, very poor on Sunday, throwing away every good thing that AW has done for the club is more than a bit extreme. I’m plenty aggrieved that we’ve spent nothing to strengthen the squad this window, but let’s be honest: the only Arsenal manager who really took transfer money and put it in his pocket was George Graham, and between the end of his era and the beginning of Wenger’s, Arsenal were in a dark place.
Take nothing from the fantastic Irish players we’ve had down the years, two of the best current crop of Ireland internationals are Robbie Keane (and I’d definitely expect such a performance from him) and Aaron McGeady, and he’s really a Scot. I don’t care where our players come from, as long as they can do the job. But you’re right, the players you mentioned along with their legendary Irish counterparts were not up for it yesterday (excluding Eduardo, but he’s not been up for it for a looooong time).
*all choked up*
Embarrassed to admit it but each time I pass by our old ground, I get a big lump in my throat. Wonderful, wonderful memories, never to be surpassed.
Nice article. I have taken several walks around the old place since we moved. It is satisfying to know that it forever stands as a memorial to such great times. It could have all been demolished and built upon if certain parts were not listed. I will always be grateful for the fact that it still stands proud, and keeps a watching eye over The Grove.
Tom, you list some great Irish servants of this club but trying to compare them to todays crop of palyers I feel is somewhat misguided. Everyone you have mentioned graced this club 30 years ago. All were fantastic in their day, but times have moved on. There have been numerous great players from all parts of the globe arrive here since then. Many have been genuinely world class. Let’s not confuse one shocking performance with the rest of the quality we have seen over the years, and will hopefully continue to see.
I remember sitting there with my dad – about 1972 to 2001 – long memories, never forgotten. great new stadium but not the same!!!
Hey Tom. When I wrote ‘British’ I made the honest mistake of thinking that included all things Irish. I realise I should have said the UK and ROI.
Mate, I was there when Brady scored THAT goal, when Stapleton scored a superb header against the Spuds in the last minute, when Spider broke the appearance record so I have absolutely nothing against the ROI players. It’s just that it’s been so long I didn’t really think anyone else would remember!
Will we still be speaking about the likes of Eboue, Denilson and Almunia in 30 years time? I think we know the answer.
Anyway, as I was saying nice pics ‘holic.
can someone PLEASE tell me how we have benefitted from this move??????? Highbury = better players not by miles bt light years and a trophy cabinet that was used infact over used!!!!!!!
god when i was at clock end bang nx 2 away fans i KNEW the people around me i felt there love i was a shoulder for there cries and many were like me,who can say that bout emirates??????? WE HAVE GONE BACKWARDS it HURTS
Pat Jennings and Pat Rice are Northern Irish, and therefore British. Not that it really matters, just had to point that out though!! ๐
talking bout our irish connections i used to ava irishman sit in front of me the man hada cannon tatoo on his cheek legend hope he still goes and wasnt priced outa his season ticket like me for sum high roller mug from eton.
comrade thanks for posting, nothing wrong with scots or Irish playing for ireland or managing arsenal (as long as the hearts in the right place ) or for that matter martin keown representing england when hes really Irish or john barnes who is really jamacian playing for england or some crickiter whos really from south africa or australia playing for england and by the way its aiden mcgeady.
anyway i thought george left some fantastic memories and players also, even you comrade probably remember our famous back 4 with seamen behind them who if memory serves me right conceded something in the region of 15 goals one season, or ian wright who could stick the ball in the net like henry and also don’t forget george delivered the championship and left the fantastic memory of an-field
anyway when you mention the great arsenal players try to fit Brady in somewhere in the top 50 PLEASE
c gander, any chance you could fuck off with the text speak?
dazza no problem, apology accepted its just that im feeling angry and its you who got it, and why im angry is this, i seen the republic of ireland who had a lot of journey men in the team absolutely pulverise a french team in paris not so long ago, and lets face it we have a lot of these french players wearing arsenal shirts and collecting good money and delivering jack-shit too the heritage we will have to leave to the next generation and lets face it the trophy cabinet is gonna be empty unless us supporters demand change
by the way ni gooner im old enough to remember those players u mentioned along with derick dougan and john Giles representing an all Ireland team who were beaten by the great Brazilian team 4 _ 3 in 70ties. like i said in my earlier post, (its where the heart lies)
yea hollic there was a magic about the place for sure,ยฃ5 quid into the north bank at 3pm on a saturday after doing the half-day shift earlier for some stubbie, changing the clothes grabbing a few beers catching the tube and meeting strangers who became friends and for that afternoon i belonged in a proper family who all pulled together. all my friends chose different to me, for them twas man utd or pool who were lording it then, not me though i was always different never went with the crowd a bit of a loner, BUT NO REGRETS
NI Gooner,
Just a correction..
If you are born in Northern Ireland, you are not British but Northern Irish. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. Check your passport. United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland.
My parents are were born in Republic of Ireland and I can say that is one of the main reasons I have been an arsenal fan since I was a boy reading about past Irish greats at Arsenal. I agree with tom 100 % in that I was also upset at Dazzas coonebt but saw that tom took care of it. didn’t know what to think when thierry made that handball either. former hero becoming the most hated man in the world for me in one second. oh and btw.. Stephen Ireland is a git.
Thanks for that —- so very very much. My first trip up the A10 to see Arsenal was 1972 as a five year old kid. From the age of 6 to 29 I was a regular holder moving from the Upper West with my Dad to the North Bank when I was old enough to be trusted (hah). I then moved to the States – but always visited the ground (even if out of season) whenever I went home. Highbury was the only home I ever knew for my Arsenal and I’ve not seen it without the club being it’s tenant. I’m not sure I can see it like this although your photos have helped the scars from the pain of seeing her being demolished via previous photos.
Some places will always remind you of specific moments – the first night game, West Ham taking the North Bank, Viv winning the ball cleanly, Benfica doing a number on us, Rocastle beating another defender, singing for Perry, Ian Wright banging in another, the last day of the North Bank. The smell of grilled onions – lots of laughs – so much fun.
Love that place – love my team.
Tim
‘holic, I genuinely envy people like you who’ve seen our past: Literally there & drinking it in.
Me, I’m from South Africa and in my early 20’s but I still remember my first trip to Highbury in 2001. Granted it was only a pre-season friendly but an experience I will never forget.
I think (some may believe I’m wrong being from South Africa and a ‘plastic’) that as much as we’d like to hark back to the experiences of the old lover and days gone by we cannot, and must not continue to bemoan our lack of pots since our parting. Those of you lucky enough to go to every game may have noticed an influx of fairweathers, as well as the lack of trophies but don’t use it as a stick to beat the Grove and the team. The Grove represents progress in itself and with a little more patience we’ll see the final phase of development complete and with that a massive jump up the revenue charts.
I too wish it could come sooner but for now, let’s remember that intimate atmosphere of Highbury and the successful times shared and get behind this team NOW. It’s the only way they’ll win anything.
Once again ‘holic, great post. I love this blog. Onto the bus stop with a famous victory!
Cheers ‘Holic.
Thanks all,
Especially Jackster ๐
Shay given anyone? To think we had a shot at him last year… We need to find some cajones and quick
I had many years at Highbury, in the North Bank when we had “Supermac” through to the lower East stand when my old Dad could not stand up for the whole match anymore.
So many games so many Victories its hard to explain but part of me died when we moved to Emirates and now like so many I cant afford a season ticket to watch my beloved Arsenal.
I’m not sure “Wenger Knows” just how much Sunday’s result Hurts
the supporters, the team was so frustratingly poor.
Stevie Williams would have let the Mancs know he was there, we just don’t seem to have any fight anymore, that left with PV4.
Lovely, ‘holic.
Another coffee for me please.
Weep ๐
37 John. I raise your Steve Williams with Paul Davis (cultured, but boy did he spank the shit out of that Southampton fellas jaw – Glen Cockrel?)
Anyone care to raise that?
In keeping with the metaphor, the ‘old’ Arsenal is like your average girl. Not fantastic looking, could scrub up when needed but you would always love unconditionally because there was a connection. Never afraid to get filthy either…
Alternatively we have the new Arsenal which is like your beautiful continental supermodel but seems to be as thick as sh!t and doesn’t even speak the same language. She only ever likes it in one position too.
AFC1974
Anyone care to raise that?
Joe Baker, 5′ 9″, sparking Ron Yeats, 6′ 3″ Liverpool skipper in ’63
Peter Storey decking anything that moved for a decade.
Holic,
Brilliant assessment..
My first time, was an empty stadium with my wife and a fresh season ticket in hand 1994, as normal (women,…she didnt realize the bueaty of the true spirit….). I have been at the gates many a times (watched movies of old heros..again and again)..
The corner seats, its gone now… (did have a bit of complain when few stood up for long in front).
That was holi grail..
Havent been there for a while, but when you think of the games…, my heart throbes… I can feel the rush of blood and wet eyebrows…
Hibury it stands …. Hibury it will be….the Holi grail…
I still remember the Berkamps talents (against Newcastle 1999),… the crowd was struck for a moment.. then all irrupted in a shout…
Hibury it sands… hibury it will be…the Holi grail.
‘Holic,
I’ll give you Peter Storey and i’m frantically on t’internet looking up Joe Baker versus Ron Yeats.
However, i’m going to produce my Joker. Martin Keown ๐

some disturbing news coming from the emirates,,reliable sourcesโฆ
an emergency board meeting has been called for with the presence of arseneโฆand hes been reportedly given a deadline to get the season back on track after the next 2 games or leave..
leave now as it will give enough time for a new manager to consolidate for the 3rd position and a fresh pre-seasonโฆ
CESC may be sold and funds made available to the new manager !!!
anybody with good guesses for new managerial targets ?
any body got any more news on this story ???
Please check your stadium sources and update…
is it gonna be a revamp at Arsenal Football Club???
sense,
it is bollocks.
Give our regards to the fat Uzbek crook.
Poor `Holic, I can’t but feel for you: you write this lovely post and lo and behold it is defaced by some of the worst lowlifes from the BBB. Talk about bad luck…
Credit where credit is due, Danish anti-Gooner is our old faithful. Over 2 years (time flies by so fast!) of never-abating negativity dutifully posted across as many Arsenal boards as possible. A couple of results against us and there he is with renewed energy, ready to pounce on any hint of optimism.
Then there’s the new kid on the block. Take notice Danish, “c gander” is there to grab your crown. Only a few weeks of spamming to his credit but he has already understood the power of punctuation and capitalization. Oh and he doesn’t mince his words either, there’s a man that knows how to make the ladies blush.
On the other end paulie from Le Groan is gracing us with a courtesy visit. Don’t mind the wording `Holic, in paulie’s world everyone and everything pro-Arsenal is scum. Arsene is scum, the players are scum, you are scum, I am scum. Because paulie knows that if we’d bought Huntelaar and Matuidi we’d be winning everything and the ones who don’t see it is are scums. Or cunts. See, actually he complimented you: your scummy/cuntish status has been revoked for the day. Lucky you. And he’s not shutting the door either, perhaps he will come back if you acknowledge Arsene’s pedophilia in your next post.
Other than that welcome to the newcomers!
Dazza is an Arsenal supporter. A real old one that remembers the good old days of British grit. From when he was in the womb since according to his Bebo page he had reached the wise age of 9 when Wenger joined Arsenal. But hey when he was 3 we won the league. It was so much better in those days, no tippy-tappy shit but good old 1-0s.
And tom, the real deal. The brainiac one. He was there before all of you and he has one thing to say: get the disgusting frog out, all these years have been painful enough. But tom went with the times and decided to learn phonespeak. See `Holic, tom can do it I’m sure you can too. Can’t wait to read you writing like an adolescent. Like tom. Who’s a better liar than Dazza.
@Rose Tinted: wat r u spewin u cunt?????!!!!!! 1-0 to teh arsennal !!!!!! fuk wengair !!!!!! we was a gr8t klub befor im!!!!!! giv our klub bak and fuc of!!!!!!!!
*chuckles*
Thanks Matt.
`Holic, ever heard of astroturfing?
That’s your best so far, Matt!
@Btm: can’t do puns like you yet, if ever actually. Almost 4am here, that does not help either.
A last drop of JD and I’m off to bed…
Well done, Rose Tinted @45. I had thought of doing something similar but couldn’t summon the energy. You’ve got big numbers in there like 83 and 90. I think you may lose the BBB readership. with double digits
It’s a crisis right enough. We’re in third, just outside the relegation zone. We’re only 7 points ahead of fourth place (nothing!), while the Mancs are a whole, mind-boggling, unbridgeable 4 points ahead of us.
We’re scoring more than most, but that’s irrelevant because our mid-field/defefenders are scoring (so that really isn’t real goals – stands to reason). And, there’s no time to close the gap on the bus stop. We’ve only got ~half the season to go. It’s a CRISIS.
Oh, and by the way, we may as well not bother going to Porto, they can play, they haven’t got Denilson or Almunia, so why not just send a note saying, “Sorry. The dog ate my homework. I can’t come”. Put the Boo and Bleat Brigade out of the misery of watching the Goons play.
Matt โ remind me not to ever cross swords with you! it is a thing of beauty. But the lickers will lick you to death. Heh.
We’re working round the clock for ‘Holc, Matt. Your off to be. I’m just up and off to work at 6.50. We’ve got the 24 hour clock covered on this blog.
What did you expect, you got them all excited by that second picture… so many windows….
Heh, again ๐
PS Dave O’ Leary is out of a job at the moment. Maybe he can come back and do a Leeds with Arsene Wenger’s ‘Babies’? Steve Staunton and Dave O’Leary. The dream team? We may not win much, but we would try VERY VERY hard. Bring back the huff and the puff. Up the Arse!
Oh and while I’m at it, look at this silly Frenchman:
http://younggunsblog.co.uk/2010/02/02/arsenals-emmanuel-thomas-arrested-by-police/?
I mean how hard did he actually try to get away from the police. You wouldn’t see Tony Adams caught out like that.
Where’s our British/Irish spine!!
PS: THIS IS SARCASM.
I saw that RT. All for paying good kids good money, but FFS can’t we give them pocket money and invest the rest to stop the stupid little plonkers (or big plonker in Jay’s case) buying motors like that and doing dumbass things. Twat deserves all that is coming to him.
doom and gloom
they’ve only gorn and wiped out rocky newsnow
He is plonker indeed, okay I drove on my provisional but I suppose it was an old shitty Corsa so no coppers would stop me he he ๐
He will get a hefty fine for this and a huge bollocking from Arsenal, he’s young what can I say. Don’t you forget folks what Bentley did few weeks ago.
Or Shall add who is John Terry shagging…. nough said ha ha
Nice one ‘holic.
It’s hard for me to see the old girl like that, the outside still looks good but as previously mentioned the inside looks like urban gentrification at it’s worse.
Tom, I remember watching all those Irish players you mentioned from the terraces at Highbury and I will agree that back then Brady and Stapleton etc were my absoulute heroes, but that team hardly set the world on fire. Of course for me at that time they were the greatest team on earth and no-one could tell me otherwise, but would you really want to choose Terry O’Neill over Arsene Wenger?
Nostalga warms the heart, but lets not get carried away, the excellent stats posted by RT show clearly that under Mr Wenger we are a force to be reckoned with. For all of you so called supporters who are calling for his head I challenge you to name a better replacement.
Pint of anything wet with a beer taste please barman and whatever Matt’s having for giving me a good laugh.
Cheers.
Most of the blogs in the cyber world has really gone overboard with all of this, once a semi decent blog “Arsenal Insider” has turned very negative, full of doom and gloom merchants and for that reason I have completely stopped reading it months ago. Calling for heads, calling names and telling everyone what Arsene should do, who to buy, where to play his players. To me they might as well take on the job and see how the team would perform under them, then again it sounds like a horror movie already and disaster would be upon us.
Matt that made me laugh mate and left me in stitches.1
Straight double vodka for me barman, must ice cold.
63 Arthur โ What, there is a car that drives itself? Heh ๐
good grief, just gave a little tug to some guy letting him know there was an Irish element to the gunners heritage and low and behold all hell breaks loose, would not dream of looking at my passport lads and ill tell yous why, its kinda like being in a bath surrounded by water, happy as larry and someone comes in and tries to shore off a section of the bath for himself. of course they fails miserably and will eventually go away embarrassed by their actions and deeds
finishing 3rd and 4th in a 4 horse race is the equivalent of finishing 15th and last in a 20 horse race, that’s my humble opinion and in the mid 1970ties clubs like derby county and forest to name but 2 had as much money if not more that the arsenal so those were not bad finishes back then really and any good accountant will verify this. now if anybody seen last sunday the arsenal team that had proper coaching done on the training ground well then they seen something that eluded me for sure. its not all about attacking and tap tap football, there’s defending to be done also, tracking back and having leaders on the field and being big and strong enough to stand up for yourself and being able to head a ball, the basics really
Hoping Hull will hold Chelski, even though I don’t like any of them, especially that walkie talkie man Brown!
Hull are 1:0 up …………….
Great blog holic came across it after your sit in on arseblog, (did they ever find the neighbours dog), there seems to be a real shitstorm in the media this week, we just need to put things in perspective the 5 teams directly below us have spent more this year, the two above have spent considerably more in the past, we have had injuries to key players, and who else could have the bollocks to play no strikers for half the season, keep the faith!!!
So it is. Cunt crosses to Mouyokolo and it’s in the back of the net!
Whoops! Sorry, that should be Hunt not Cunt. Although I dare see it’s not the first time someones mistaken him for one. Heh. ๐
1 all…. Drogba free kick outside the box left hand side
Hey tom, time to get a hint. I’m sure being the ancient fan that you are that your opinions seem worth a lot to yourself. But barging in here like a drunk to shout “Arsene out” and complain about the french elements (did you whine about the Invincibles french players too?) barely 2 weeks after we were top of the league after a run-in full of resolve since the Chelski defeat? Where were you at that time, didn’t you have anything positive to tell us about the players or the manager, didnt they have the “basics” right? When we were flying at the beginning of the season, scoring goals for fun, I don’t remember you coming here to share your ancient wisdom?
There are boards specialized in criticizing all things Arsenal, perhaps you should try your luck there. I’m sure you’ll find plenty to listen to your explanations about how finishing mid-table (behind the Spuds at that) was a great result in those days and why we should head straight back to that era.
Oh shit. This time a Cunt really has scored. It’s 1 – 1.
LOL @ AFC1974
I agree with you on that one 1100% a CUNT indeed lol….
Found a very interesting article in a yougoslavian paper (yes, yes…): http://english.blic.rs/Sports/5961/Kid-you-are-Arsenal-material
It’s the interview of a wonderkid who’s about to join us, some excerpts:
-“There were offers from Tottenham and Birmingham City, but once a call came from Arsenal, I had no more doubts.”
The way the team performed against Manchester United, you might as well join in Arsenalโs defence straight away.
– โI was on the terraces and it must have been hard for the lads on the pitch. United had a terrific game, especially Nani. Wenger was extremely mad during the training session yesterday.
Nicely done Matt you are our little reaserch guru…..not sure if you’re little or not but hey you know what I mean! ๐
My pleasure Arthur.
Whilst we are on the subject of Cunts:
Wayne Bridge sent his missus a replica of his cock made from Cadbury’s chocolate.
She said that she prefers Terry’s. ๐
I’m a gigantic god-like sporty type if you must know ๐
Go Hull go! (Can’t believe what I’m writing…)
AFC1974
HAHHAHAAAAAAA…..thats a good one….
Matt, is a natural buzz or tell us what have you taken ?
Hull are holding well, hope I’m not going to jinx it!
Fucking new it……come on my son!
What a rollercoaster of a season! This morning we were potentially 8 points behind the leaders, nows it’s 6 and if we win against Chelski and Pool, we could be back at the helm in 2 weeks. Unbelievable!
PS: Good mojo there Arthur!
Yeah credit where credit is due. Arf this one is down to you pal.
You can put away your lucky charms now. We will need them again – soon.
seems as tho chelsea are more keen to keep us in the race than some of our players!!!
Why did you say nothing about the capitalist system, which is the executor of Highbury?
I think our season apart form the Chelski game and Pool will be decided playing these teams:
Spuds
Man City
Birmingham
Stoke
and maybe Hull…..Now
Either way we need to get our momentum back our winning streak…
I think LE Boss should asign a covering tactic for Sunday we don’t want be humilated do we now?
There is another thing as well all the ball bounces form any situation seemed to favor Hull today…we are never this fortunate.
We just may be on Sunday, Arthur. ๐
I hope so ‘holic we certainly deserve it…
If Matt was right then I’m expecting a completely different Arsenal side on Sunday!
lovely post,a nice change from the doom and gloom of the last few days, keep the faith cmon arsenal
The futures bright, the futures Orange (Phil Brown) heh.
AFC1974
They’ll be making their own brand of “Phil” Bluecunt Headsets ๐
‘Holic thank you for sorting this one out!
Keep the faith indeed….in a season where every team is having some results as tough as ours on Sunday we are still well in with a shout. The good news….we are completely capable of picking up an excellent pile of points from all of our remaining fixtures, a draw in West London isn’t the end of the line.
Come on Gunners!
Matt! Thanks for guarding the pub whilst I’ve been away! With some good help from Rose Tinted as well. Hull did their part too!
Here’s to the french revolution succesfully storming the Bastille on Sunday! Vive la France and our scarred “Mercenary” boy from Catalonia!
Sorry Arthur, you got caught in friendly fire there. I don’t lose any posts, but I’m not sure how long they go into moderation for when something like that happens. I’ll do some searching tonight.
‘Holic
It’s alright, thinking about it now it’s probably better no one can see them now.

Loving yer blog mate
49 Matt – Amazing! A sincere thank you from someone who has given up arguing.
i CALL UPON ARSENE TO MAKE SOME TOUGH CALLS…
JUST SEND THIS TEAM OUT….
———–fabianski—————-
sagna,gallas,verma,clichy(or eboue)
————song——————
———-cesc,diaby————–
——theo,bendtner,arshavin—–
doesnt matter if we get beat…i’m sure these lads would give it a fight and not collabse
I’m sorry but NASRI and ROSICKY seem to be taking things for granted..AND DENILSON SHOULDNT EVEN BE ON THE BENCH !!!
And Gallas and Verma should be told unless we are far behind and badly trailing…they shouldnt just unnecessarily lumber forward leaving our left back exposed !!!
I’m serious about EBOUE for LEFT BACK…the guy can defend…or atleast defend better than clichy !!! the guy attacks the ball when we dont have it !!!
@ a gunner
I think Clichy still needs few games to get his form back the only thing that he should do more often is to run forward with the ball on the wing, he is fast and shouldn’t have any problems doing it.
I disagree with Nasri and Rosicky, they are both very good players and I would play them anytime, I also think Nasri is more suited in the middle rather than on the wing. As for Denilson you can’t really say he should’t be on the bench this is the guy who scores goals for us this season.
I would also go for Manone in goal not Fabianski.
don’t think i need too apologise for my age (with age comes wisdom) and as for being a drunk well i say that’s the first time that ive been called that, often been drunk ok and i like the few beers i will freely admit that but always behaved myself. and i never knew their was a right time to post your first comment at the goonerholic blog. well you learn something new everyday of the week and and how important it is to finish above tottenham and that were going to see a new arsenal against chelsea, believe me i sincerely hope so and not the arsenal who let their captain be kicked in the head and then kneed in the head while he lay on the ground and nobody in an arsenal shirt went to his assistance
thought it was below the belt for remarks made about o’leary and tony Adams, two stalwarts of the club who having left school at an early age went on to give splendid service to the arsenal
tom, it is difficult sometimes for the boys to differentiate between those who come on here with a negative message and those who have a different view but express it clearly. You are more than welcome.
I’m not a drunk either, but the buggers won’t believe me ๐
P*ssheed!
See what I mean!
gooner thanks for that, like ure good self i often paid a visit to see the old stadium and a tear was never far away when the demolition was in progress and like visiting a sick friend in hospital you hoped things would be better next time you visited
had many happy memories of the place and ill share this one with you, twas Saturday the 15th may 2004 and through friends of friends who knew niall Quinn i got a seat in the sky studio at highbrow for that game.when i was taken to the sky studio door who was inside doing punditry on that game only George graham
what a day that was, going unbeaten for the season, collecting the premiership trophy being fed sandwiches by non other that George himself and being brought round to look at replays of the goals on monitors in the studio and being coached by George on how a defender should never have his hands above his head when jumping for a ball. at no57 on the match day programme which is singed by graham that day is a certain francese fabregas
Great story tom. Had an interesting discussion with someone at the Grove on Sunday, and the considered opinion is that George would not have got his P45 if his last few signings weren’t complete disasters. Can’t argue what the man achieved with the lads he inherited and the shrewd signings he made that he knew from his Millwall days. Would certainly be at the dinner table if I ever got to choose a guest list for a night.
Indeed going unbeaten is a once-in-a-century feat. We are much closer to win the Champions League than our rivals are to match the Invincibles. Actually that’s probably not true, Liverpool and United are much closer to go undefeated for one season in the Championship given that their financial situation is about to bear its rotten fruits.
Unfortunately this is also a thorn in our side. It attracted a lot of bandwagon fans who go through every adverse moment like bipolars on speed since they can only judge our performance by comparing it to the Invincibles. As a predictable result they will be lamenting for another century independently of our achievements. It’s as if Arsene unwillingly condemned them to eternal damnation…
Sorry to have lumped you with them tom.
`Holic, we don’t believe you because you confess every few posts. Or is that diabetic hangovers you are suffering from?
For all those mourning the fact that Keane opted for Celtic instead of us, a few great news:
We signed or are about to sign:
1) a 19yo defender from Montenegro, Stefan Savic.
2) two 17yo Brazilian forwards everyone seems to be raving about here and there, Wellington Silva and Zezinho.
3) the bolivian captain of the U17, Samuel Galindo, who *may* be older though.
That’s 4 signings for whom we were competing against the likes of United, Chelski, City, RM, Barca etc.
One thing is sure, there’s going to be some cut-throat competition to play at the Arsenal next year, whether it’s in the Carling Cup or the CL!
The last bit of good news is that Diaby looks like he will be back against Chelski and Bendtner will be fit to start.
Keep the faith as Steve T tells you!
One last bit of nostalgia: Where are they now โ โArsenalโs title winners of โ89?… Not that we don’t know but it’s still an enjoyable read: http://www.footballfancast.com/football-blogs/arsenals-title-winners-89
Interesting, ‘Holic.
Goonerholic seems to have transcended to a new, consistent level of 100 plus posts (even although you’re posting approx 50 yourself……your “c gander” pen-name is my favourite…..big smile) this is quite an accomplishment. Good quality stuff too, for the most part, the occasional Spud/Manc intruder apart.
Thanks for providing such a fun sand pit for us all to build our castles in the sky.
I agree with Btm. Even though I’ve been reading your posts for over a year now, I thank god that I decided to take a gander in the “drinks ” section. Great place to discuss team news with knowledgeable gooners.
old stroller would make a fantastic guest at you table gooner, and as a bit of a windup invite Igor, pascal and Mick silvester too complete the foursome and you doing the cooking and keeping the wine glasses full with the old speckled hen
hopefully your kitchen is adjacent to the dining (ray)parlour and you can keep the conversation flowing as you appeTITS the pie and mash.twood be great also to have a monitor on old strollers heart for a bit of crack
What gives with those bunch of repulsive morons at Barca? Not only is that record worn and scratched, but that musical format has long since become yesteryear. Furthermore 40million squideros won’t even buy his left testicle. Not that we would ever, ever consider the unthinkable. Would we?
So let me get this straight? Anyone who criticizes flawless Wenger is plastic.
so as too devote more time to your esteemed guests gonner, i suggest you prepare the dessert of jellied IELE (french) beforehand as it will hold in the fridge for a good 24hrs,only sprinkle the crushed walker crisps on the IELE a few minutes before serving,oh and don’t forget the IELE is served from the left and the old speckled en from the right.
sorry i cant go to the party apparently im condemned to external damnation by one of your fans for following the gunners during the 03/04 season
brill post and remember like the sprinkling of the walkers always keep it fresh
TOM
im the real 1 not the other 1
