Our Early Season Goals Are, Er, Goals

“Can someone please tell me it is not yet time to worry.”
Trev is not alone in the drinks. Neither is he pessimistic by nature, I have thought as his contributions have increased. He shares the concerns I think most feel to one degree or another. Even yours truly.
But in answer to your question, Trev, I am bound to say no, not yet it isn’t.
True, the squad appears short of real quality in the heart of the defence, and if Manuel Almunia does not rediscover his form of 2008/9 then we don’t have a goalkeeper who I can visualise lifting the really big prizes next May.
It remains entirely possible, however, that in the nineteen days that remain in this transfer window any forecasts of impending disaster could be rendered premature at best by shrewd acquisitions. Before I am besieged by soothsayers warning me to beware the ides of Anfield, yes I am aware that the campaign starts in under seventy hours, as I write.
Like Arsene himself, who expressed a preference, not a promise, to conclude his transfer dealings prior to the World Cup, I would have liked to see the squad formed and in place for day one. Deals for Chamakh and Koscielny were welcome, but as so many other clubs have found, kick-starting the market after the tournament has been a drawn out affair.
Buyers valuations are way below what sellers are expecting, and a huge round of brinkmanship is being played out by most of the major clubs being determined to find value in difficult economic circumstances. Not every club will get the players it needs, and they may in turn hang on to targets for others as a result.
Nonetheless I remain convinced that we will be adding to the squad in the time that remains. Until then can those we have in place keep us in the hunt? I don’t think there is much doubt that indeed they can.
Even on the day that we have a worryingly lengthy list of injured and doubtful published ahead of Anfield we are celebrating the international performances of those who could benefit from the situation. Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, and particularly Kieran Gibbs all made an impression at Wembley as England came from behind to beat Hungary. Ironically the latter, so impressive in the second-half, is the least likely of the trio to claim a starting berth on Sunday.
More of that game in the preview I intend to publish on Saturday. We also have to negotiate Blackpool at home and Blackburn away before the window closes, so if we do not strengthen before the last minute do we really think that the first three games could have a catastrophic effect on the season as a whole?
I’ll avoid the jerking of patellas and suggest no. Liverpool away may be a stern test, but I have a feeling that Anfield will not be a place that many of our rivals will win at this season. With Torres a doubt we may just be going there at the right time. Similarly we can surely anticipate our array of attacking riches causing all manner of difficulty for the other north-west clubs that follow.
With the variety we have in forward positions we have to assume that goals will not be hard to come by. Even at Blackburn where the locals will again try to drill whoever is in goal into his own net at every opportunity we should still have the flair and firepower to overcome the anti-everything that is Fat Sam.
If we lose one of those three, our season will not be over. Two, and those new signings had better appear sharpish. Three? That, my friend Trev, is when I will be worried to the extent that underwear will be in need of a serious launder.
Does that answer your question?

Swift Pint please good man !
Last evening on call.
Just a little nightcap of your choice, boss!
No new keeper?? Try Reading schwarzers comments today:)
*waves recklessly, spilling cocoa everywhere*
I’ve read them, Tom, and heard the rumour that he is desperately trying to force through a move we considered unlikely.
Nice one as always ‘Holic.
I wish I had your optimism, and I’m an optimist!!
“Can someone please tell me it is not yet time to worry.”
Been feeling this too recently.
just a center back and a ‘keeper and we’ll win this thing!
You choose barkeep.
Yeah. So you never know we might get a keeper althouh as much as I want a new defender I doubt it.
As i added to the last post the rumours are flying at the mo,
If they are to be believed Schwarzer is sounding pretty much done and theres a good chance it will be a double unveiling how true who knows but we gotta have hope right 🙂
Holic, a question for you. How come Torres, who probably played more minutes in SA than Fabregas, will definitely start if fit but Cesc could possibly be rested?
Dazza, in the same vein, how would you feel if that happened and Torres missed twenty games later in the season while Cesc stayed fit?
Let them worry about how fit their boy is, and rely on our staff to make a sensible call on Cesc’s condition.
Fair point Holic.
It just always seems as though Arsene errs on the side of caution yet our injury list is consistently amongst the PL’s worst despite this.
Dazza – could it be to do with his leg? With all the furore over the ‘will he, won’t he’ saga I’ve not heard the Arsenal medics comment on the injury, and there’s a long old season ahead which he needs to be right for.
Hopefully of course, it’s just to lull Liverpool into a false sense of security 🙂
Motto should be: ‘Clean Sheets, Clean Up Opposition and complete the trophy room’, this season. Let’s believe it no matter what …
Another good one Holic and I too share your optimism and calmness with regards to the transfer period. I personally think that while many bloggers and a minority of Arsenal fans (I hope) have been having a go and moaning about this and that I feel we’ve been going about our job looking for a new starting defender and goalkeeper quietly. There’s no surprise that this week we’ve heard Werder Bremen say Mertesacker is not for sale, Moyes telling Jagielka he’s going nowhere and Serdar Tasci saying he’d prefer a move to Arsenal not Spurs it’s all because we are out there looking for players because there is a need for them and I believe before Blackburn we’ll have them in. We’re not sitting on our hands. I fancy us against Liverpool too cause they’ll be down Torres and Mash their best forward and midfielder and we’ll have it would seem an in form Nasri, Chamakh and a couple others who can have good games against the pool.
Shot and a brew please for me I aint driving.
Holic – as ever sane words of wisdom. I never cease to be amazed at some of the negativity and doom and gloom that some fans have.
I suppose those of us that remember the 70s & 80s know what barren patches are like – newer fans perhaps have only known winning and winning in style.
I live in hope that this is the year but if it isn’t – so be it. The sheer joy of winning a trophy will be even sweeter if the wait continues. Whatever , I’ll be back for more .
A pint of anything please.
Lot of other stuff happening hence I’ve neglected your site but I did manage to read, and now, obviously, reply to, your latest.
Sorry ‘holic but this is déjà vu. For Vieira and Henry now read Cesc and a summer wasted on fending off hostile bids with apparently little or no attention paid to our needs.
We are in exactly the same situation we’ve been in the last 5 or 6 years. New keeper, new centre halves (I feel for Djourou but every year he’s like a Swallow – disappears for the winter to migrate back in May) and a defensive midfielder – our current motley crew are all down with something or other and undoubtedly will be again.
Yes, these are difficult times and the world cup didn’t help, blah, blah, blah, but in reality the Manager should be sorting this out well in advance so that new players join and meld with the rest of the squad now.
The leave it to the last minute, bargain basement approach hasn’t worked in the past and I can see no reason why it should come off this year. We may get the geriatric Aussie (who hardly impressed with his Fab impersonation on the last day of the season) but other than that I think we’re fucked and can’t see us signing anyone else.
Yet again we’ve lost experienced players, for little or no return, and brought in a couple of promising youngsters, but nowhere is there any real suggestion of bringing in more experience or leadership.
This team is close to winning something and that’s what makes this whole Groundhog Day thing so frustrating. I think it’s finally time for a change at the top.
fizzy water and lime please
Why is itn that pundits and ex-pros alike are saying this can be our year, yet a swift trawl of the Gooner blogs and we are fecking doomed???
What a sad, miserable bunch we are! Anyone would think Almunia was an armless blind pygmy with a phobia of footballs the way some hysterical gits are going on with themselves! We beat the scousers at their place last season FFS!
I know we are leaving it late and god knows I’d have prefered a new keeper and CB in by now, but all this hand wringing and “woe is us” bollocks is doin me in!
Medicinal Brandy for me, BTW Holic!
“Change at the top” Garrett? You getting a new haircut mate?
‘Holic – it won’t matter what sort of form Almunia is in if Fabianski gets the nod ahead of him (god help us).
I would love a win, but with our frailties at the back my head says the best we can hope for is a draw.
Something to steady my nerves, barman.
Kevtheveg, I certainly remember the 70s and 80s, and some of the 60s, all too well and that’s why the current situation is so frustrating.
Then for long periods we really weren’t in a position to challenge for trophies; now we’re not far short but most people can see what needs to be done but AW either can’t or won’t address the issues.
Given the Club’s apparent financial security it’s hard to understand why he’s so reluctant to take the necessary action.
A concise article Sir.
Despite the uncertainty around our defence and GK, I am really excited and optimistic about the team. There’s lots of players with lots to prove and improve. The addition of youth players make competition for position in attack, midfield and left back, better then last year, and off coarse the team is one year maturer. Also, hopefully we won’t have last season’s freakish injury list.
The pint is least 3/4 full is it not?
Hey, Garrett, good to see you again. You always add balance to the stuff I knock out. Hope you have summered well.
Understand your fears. As I say, I share most of them, but I have to believe we are finally going to invest in our core business, the football, instead of property matters.
Come back in September and I might be the pessimistic one 😉
Mug, I would do but I’ve got to wait for the transfer window to see if AW can afford it
zico, if Fabianski gets the nod we are all going to be suicidal in a fortnight. He must be sent out on loan for his own good, surely?
Fabianski and Sczeszney need to be loaned with Almunia kept as back up the new number one (yes, there will be one!)
WE do not have defensive frailties as far as I can tell, any team would look defensive weak if they dont have any midfield cover.
Given that none of our 1st choice CMs have featured this pre-season, apart from the excellent nasri, its hardly surprising. Plus I wouldnt pay too much to pre-season games anyway.
Just how Song, DEnilson and Diaby are all out injured is beyond me though. Hopefully it aint a sign of things to come.
‘Holic – if he is sent out on loan it would be the best thing for him and us I guess – I’m just nervous because no one has said (as far as I’m aware) that he won’t be playing on Sunday!
Hopefully Arshavin can have his “normal” Anfield outing 🙂
People forget player trades have to be agreed by a few parties, not just one. How can we be calling Barça callous and full of themselves when we think that bringing players like Reina can happen just because we wanted it done? For Reina (for example) to come here, the two clubs would have to agree that one wants to sell and the other want to buy, then price, then see if the player wants to move (that would be decent of the selling club… to have the player have a say on his future). So yeah, I don’t think we are at this point because a lack of trying. Arsene is not stupid. He sees what needs to be done, but need to be respectful of the players he has, so he won’t talk about new signings until they happen, and that’s the way it should be.
Morning ‘Holic
I think we will need to see who will win the stare down between Schwarzer and Hughes. If he is determined to go, can Fulham secure a replacement in time? I for one have never been so interested in a GK signing since the Seaman v Lukic conundrum of the early 90’s.
Would you take Willy Gallas back?
A Highland Park with a splash of water for me please?
Cheers,
Well I for one cant wait for Sunday and the 1st game of the season. But then again, the away games are a top day out!
id like 2 know why cesc is poss not match fit 2 play at anfield but he playd 4 spain last nite? I know it woz a friendly…. But isnt that how players get match fit? Am i missing somthing?
I think Chesney should be fighting with Almunia for no.1, and Flappy should be sent on loan. We give plenty of oppourtunities to young players, why not in goal. He’s got bags of confidence and lots of talent.
Just a lemonade, still got 3 weeks to go.
[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Dave Tencin and Arsenal Buzz, Arsenal FC. Arsenal FC said: Our Early Season Goals Are, Er, Goals: “Can someone please tell me it is not yet time to worry.” Trev is not alone… http://bit.ly/9JdPah […]
Gallas?
Not for me. There are tensions in every changing room, but as we saw in the summer, and we already knew, this fella’s atttitude can stink the place out.
That is a shame because he must now be praying for someone to offer him a year on half-decent money, and we could do with Billy the player, but not with all that baggage.
Lest we forget, he always seems to go missing when the heat is on…
Thanks ‘holic, good to be back.
Just a thought but, although the fixture list/sky schedule always screws up the early season bookings, is there a reason why the Club is going gangbusters over tkts for the 1st tranche of games.
Having booked WBA on Wednesday there’s now Brum on Monday, which on my reckoning makes it 4 lots of tkts in 5 weeks.
Greedy or want to put bums on seats before the awful truth is revealed . . . . Fab is our 1st choice keeper?
Always happens the start of the season, Garrett, as they try to get back to eight weeks notice for them all. They don’t get that for the first games while the season tickets and memberships are being renewed and TV fixtures are being sorted so it is a case of everything in the first couple of months going up in quick succession.
Not ideal, I grant you, but the club aren’t that chuffed with it either I don’t think.
If we get Schwarzer then I’ll be satisfied with our dealings this summer.
A pint of St. James’ Gate’s finest ‘holic and roll on Sunday!!!
Evening Holic & Holic`s
Before the S.O.S goes out and the flairs litter the sky and just before someone screams ICE BERG !
I think we need wait and see what happens in the next two weeks, I am not too sure that Schwarzer is the man to replace Almunia and Fabianski should not be considered as a number one well not yet and I don’t think anyone here will argue with that.
Almunia made some terrible mistakes last season and his confidence was kicked to bits and left in tatters only to be replaced by a young keeper still learning his trade unfortunately at a slower pace than what is required.
Fulhams number one slapping in a transfer request had shades of Cesc and Fulham don’t want to sell and under that premise we should not pursue if we are to take the high road when talking transfers. If Fulham choose to offer the player that is a different story and we are well within are rights to buy with no tag of whats good for one is not good for the other.
Is Schwarzer that good any way ? Is he much better than what we have ? If Almunia can regain the form of 08/09 I would have to say NO. Arsene may think that the former Fulham number one in the latter stages of his career has done pretty damn good at the manc`s. I will have to hold my hands up and say yes Van der sar has had a great couple of seasons. I don’t see that applying to Schwarzer thou and yes once again I could be terribly wrong.
For me a world class defender is what is required more than anything and a player close to the age of Verm to form a great partnership for years to come.
Just my opinion
What ever is coldest please barman.
Oh, we will be fine. We’ll have a good season. Not sure it will be great, but it might well be. I’m ever the optimist, but that’s because a good season for me perhaps means something else than what it does for a doom n’ gloomer.
Having that said, I’m in Krakow on vacation, and watched the Poland game yesterday. Even if Fabianski did alright I do hope that we don’t get to see too much of him this season. I hate saying things like that, he’s probably a
Phone sent the message when I wasnt finished.
…nice guy. But i’d rather see someone else tween the posts. Anyways, bring on Liverpool! 3 out of 3 against them last season!
Evening all. Got to say I’m very jealous of Trev having a whole article dedicated (in a way) to him. Up there with Arthur, I believe.
Just back from a refreshing trip to Blighty, and reassuring to see not too much has changed.
For what it’s worth, my wish list (along with someone else above); New signing no 1. Almunia No 2. Swexchnyyyy on loan for a maximum of 2 seasons. Find Fab a nice club, where he can have a nice career, as he seems like a nice boy.
Where are you Trev??
Pint please
Evening, Holics. I have to admit, beside the keeper situation- nuf said about that I reckon- I think I’m most anxious by the amount of injured players we have already. I don’t think our starting 11 is anything to complain about exactly as it is, it just seems utterly impossible to get even 8-9 consistently playing through a season.
Yikes, I will ride your slight optimism ‘Holic as long as I can, just because we’re Gunners.
Guinness, if you will.
Nice piece, too much negativity with some of the arsenal bloggers, if they want big names go to Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool. This team continues to develop and is quite close to going over the hill each year, a new defender and keeper needed ( agree whole heartedly). Even if we do get them( which i think we are) it is not necessarily we will succeed in the league.
I have faith in what we have to get us through the next couple matches and perhaps through the league with some injury returns.
I think with most keepers they need luck and often enough our keepers do not have that luxury of luck. Almunia is a good keeper, i think he needs some good games below is belt to get the confidence and the confidence of the fans.
I really do not see Liverpool as a attacking threat at the moment, and their defense not exceptional from the practice matches i have seen.
So Arsenal will win and we need to continue with the momentum after this game
Could i have some milk please, mom says i should not drink.
Looking forward to Sunday and more importantly the Bolton game for which I have a clock end ticket!
I always hope but have a naturally pessimistic bent so think our season is all down to the remaining days if the transfer window multiplied by our injury stats for the season.
Light and bitter please stout ‘holic of the bar.
‘Holic, sorry my response has been delayed, but many, many thanks for your article.
I must admit, and agree, that it has occurred to me that Arsene shares your thinking, in that if we can get away with it at Anfield, he may be able to squeeze more value out of the market while we take on a few, what should be, winnable games before the window closes.
I’m sure none of us really believes that AW would risk ruining a season for the sake of signing an extra player, if he felt one was needed.
Maybe he feels Nordveidt and Djourou will be good enough, in the same way he trusted Alex Song to come through.
The worry here though, is that Djourou is again already injured before the season has kicked off.
He did say, though, that he needed more experience and not more potential.
It does disappoint that we can’t sign a Mertesacker, or someone of that ilk, when we do try – if, indeed, we did – given the position that the club is now in.
I guess it’s fingers crossed time, and hope we can keep those 6 – 5s coming!
Catalan – where am I? I’m mostly hiding under a blanket, peering out occasionally at Sky Sports News – god forbid – hoping to see some inspiring “Breaking News”.
‘Holic, many thanks again, I’m honoured indeed. Please have a large double of your choice.
I think we will not get a CB after all. The market is definitively dead, no one is selling nor buying (`Appy `Arry is so pissed off, what can he do if he’s not able to spend?), for every player we’ve been seriously linked with we’ve been either told he’s not available or quoted ridiculous prices.
Then we have 5 youths players coming in this season (Nordveit, Wilshere, Frimpong, JET and Lansbury) with Ramsey and Eastmond the season before. The plan is obviously to make them play and not only in the Carling Cup. We’re certainly not going to buy a player if he’s not the perfect fit to have youngsters watch him from the bench.
We’ve debated it long enough to know it doesn’t matter that much in the end. If we have another season with 60 injuries while Chelski/Indebted/Pool have 40-50 we won’t win anything with or without more players. On the other hand if the magic GPS box helps us retain a competitive team in the second half of the season the title could be ours. With or without new players.
@Booland: the days of clean sheets are not coming back as long as we play 433. With that formation we need to score more than the opposition, not preserve the score once we’ve got one goal advantage.
Is the injured squadron bit an instant replay or just a broken record? It’s looking more and more like Arshavin is going to have to “pull it out” one more time.
Excellent post Holic.
Trev, way to go buddy :D.
Well, with Schwarzer being quoted as desperate to join the keeper situation is improving (I really don’t rate Almunia no matter what form he’s in).
I’ve also seen here in Israel that AW has approached Sakho of P.S.G – It was covered cause my team here Maccabi Tel-Aviv is playing P.S.G in the Europa league playoffs and it was a cynical piece saying AW is helping Maccabi by bidding for Sakho.
Does anybody know him? Is he any good? Didn’t get a chance to see him.
Very very optimistic for the upcoming season, really like Frimpong as Song’s cover, pretty sure this will be Diaby’s, Nasri’s and Wilshere’s year and hoping RvP will have more than 20 games. As long as that’s O.K we’ll win it regardless of our defence.
One word you fail to mention in your post is the dreaded AGENT .I am sure transfer dealings get more and more complicated every season, and City seem intent to spend, spend, spend until they eventually win something, even if they cast away whoever every season and of course the new home rule affects them as much as anyone.
Personally I agree with others that why bother with Schwarzer as a short term replacement. is he that good ?
Another thing is that Hodgeson has perhaps taken a job which is a tad too much for him, that together with the expectancy of the Liverpool faithful to regain at least a top 4 finish and of course the financial mess the club are in, and every day appear to be getting a new owner, will put him under immense pressure from day one.
We will be short on Sunday, but I have a feeling RVP will start.
At this moment of time with the inclusion of Chamakh, our attacking options look better yet our defensive frailities, at least for the moment, remain the same.
In not all that excited about signing the ozzie keeper but if im honest id have him in the team instead of Fabianski – his mind is always on his next mistake, as is the defense and ours!! Not a fan of Almunia but if hes backup i can live with it for now. But a change is needed and if we aew gonna do it with Schwarzer then why not go another step and name Szezesey his No2 – that way negating the influence of Almunia and Fabianski on the first team altogether
I sincerely hope that this is the season where Wenger’s philosophy is vindicated. I am really desperate for him to succeed and surely he deserves it.
Wenger does balances the book in the transfer market astutely but he fails to address the balance in his team.
Morning Holic. A very well balanced overview of the challenge ahead as always. Seems to me a lot of working is going on in the background to sort the gk’ing situation. No need to panic at all! I have a feeling the same is happening in central defence – I’m inclined to think it is!
Let’s remember we have an excellent footballing academy Tsecond to none imo) in which millions has been invested so far. I’d much rather see us bear the fruit of all that prodigious talent, as opposed to others. I’d suggest Wenger is aware of his obligation towards that system rather than simply whipping out the cheque book.
Getting both sides of the equation (‘home grown’ versus ‘shipped in’) just right requires a huge amount of foresight and skill.
I would suggest Armageddon hasn’t quite happened just yet.
Keep on believing 🙂
Holic
Just got out of the ‘ Secure Unit ‘ this morning, where i have been since the end of last season.
No Radio/TV/internet/Newspapers or Visitors.
Only found out last week Spain won the World Cup.!!
I had been refusing to sign the documents requiring me to take responsibility for my daily prescribed medicines.
But i have given in and signed on the dotted line knowing the new season kick off wasn’t far away.
I am home now resting, getting used to my freedom.
I have a lot to catch up on and will be in touch soon.

Clive rocks!
Evening ‘holic and ‘holics. Everone please relax ffs.
DeiseGooner (I presume you’re from Waterford) and I will have the added pressure of Tipp v Waterford in an all Ireland hurling semi-final at the same time as Arsenal v Liverpool so sunday is going to be a tough day.

Anyone care to recommend a nice Brandy
‘Holic i’ll have those blue/green cocktails with little umbrellas they serve at my local. If those little umbrellas are in the form of a defender i’ll be more than happy!
Enjoy the beggining of life – i mean it’s like we’ve been living in a dark hole without real football.
@ chippy I prefer vodka but Van Ryn’s is my local Brandy, hope it’s available at your end. Otherwise Cognac.
Ette,
Many thanks will give VRs a go at some point, Vodka the devils water hey 🙂
Welcome home Clive. I’m loving seeing the ‘holics massing again for a new assault 😉
does anyone know if schwazer has arsenal DNA running through his veins?
Just in case some of you may be interested, our game is shown in 3D. You can find the nearest pub with 3D TVs here: http://pubfinder.sky.com
Redbull please, ‘holic.
New Goalkeeper for Arsenal ? It’s a Given!
According to tomorrow’s papers, Shay Given is to be dropped by Citeh and will put in a transfer request.
Could this be what we have been waiting for – seems too good to be true, but . . . . . .
Trev – From what I understood, Celtic is also interested in Given and City would prefer letting him go there rather than us…
JUST FEEL THE TITLE HUNT FOR IS OVER BEFORE IT HAS EVEN BEGUN…
we’ve heard enough of him sayin players’ belief and ambition and blah blah…& so it is shown when they come onto the pitch…
but what abt his “DEMONSTRATION” of belief & ambition rather than talk .. well its in its Decisions when assembling a squad, his tactics during a game & the management of the spirit of the team – all of which were NOT good enough to win a title in recent seasons…
& I caught this – at his press conference :
“Like Arsenal, Liverpool will try to fight first for the top four and then for the title. Having watched the Community Shield, you could see that Manchester United and Chelsea will fight for the title again because what they showed was quality. After that you have all the other teams that we have known last year like Villa, Tottenham and Man City, of course, because they have invested big money. So there are seven or eight teams who will fight for it.”
HE SAYS LIVERPOOL AND ARSENAL WILL 1ST FIGHT FOR A TOP 4 SPOT & THEN THE TITLE…
While United & Chelsea are the favourites…
sums up ! he in his own admission – has said Arsenal will be an Also Ran !!!
Not great arsene – thort Last season would have taught you enough of your so called policy !!!
His ambition is perfectly fine. He just doesn’t need a whole lot to win the league, he needs a better medical staff, that’s what we need…
I frigging can’t wait!
Snir Geuli, Maybe we need one of those ancient Chinese herbalists on staff?
I’m good with anything that’ll improve that horrible injury list.
This is intolerable! I can’t take it anymore… I’m supporting a hospital, not a football team.
PS. I heard from a great site that Howie Nordtviet might miss the game due to a mix up by the amateur FA up there in Norway. The fact that he was suspended should of been a red light, but it seems they missed that fact for the entire ‘international break’. Oh by the by, creating a second week-in, not for anything, fantasy footie league : 1702558-316871 at http://fantasy.premierleague.com/
Just giving a heads up, since I felt a league that starts in the second week of the season is best for a team that won’t be showing their top form till .. well, Song is healthy. Whenever that might be.
Good start to the season with both Citeh and Spurs dropping points …
