Mersey Beat – It's Double Fab For Gunners
Nov 14th, 2010 by 'holic
I don’t know what more you could want from a game of football than that. Two sides who by and large play the game the right way going hammer and tongs at each other. Atmosphere a plenty from the crowd, although mainly the travelling Gooners, controversial refereeing decisions, thundering tackles but no broken bones, and three goals not quite evenly distributed.
Perhaps it is easier to view the contest through rose-tinteds when you have a hundred and seventy reasons for so doing! The ‘holic pound moved into positive territory for the season, but I think we could all have done without that four added minutes. Add shredded nerves to the list of things that made this game un-missable.
For half an hour I have to say I thought we were in for a very tough afternoon. Everton are probably as close as you’ll see to Arsenal’s ideology in the top flight. Next to no hoofing of the ball (although Heitinga must learn not to try hoofing opponents with every challenge) and plenty of passing. They close-down quickly as well and gave as good as they got in the early stages. The difference between the sides is in the final third.
Chances were traded as Nasri was denied by an excellent Distin block, then Cahill thankfully headed over a cross from the impressive Coleman, who was testing Clichy to the full. Wilshire, on possibly the only occasion he avoided the clumsy Heitinga, was denied by an outstanding Jagielka block. Finally Everton started running out of steam, and Bacary Sagna provided the unlikeliest of openers. Had it been at the other end there would have been questions asked about the goalkeeping. Instead Howard was left to profane to nobody in particular. “One nil to the Arsenal” boomed out across an otherwise silent Goodison.
Half-time brought with it a couple of interesting substitutions. Heitinga, surely a certainty for a second yellow card was withdrawn by the hosts, whilst the victim of many of his agricultural challenges, Wilshere, was also removed from the fray. “Not an injury”, said the man on Sky. I’m not sure about that, but the introduction of Rodwell and Denilson definitely swung things decisively in our favour (there BtM, I’ve said it!).
It wasn’t long before the little Brazilian combined with Chamakh to set up the skipper for number two. At this point perhaps nobody would have been surprised if Everton had folded, as in last season’s meeting at the same venue. Not this time though. Although Arsenal controlled the ball for long spells in that way that possibly only they can, the home team responded with bursts of effort and the Gunners were again thankful to Fabianski for a string of excellent saves, most notably a superb parry of Beckford’s effort on the turn.
Rosicky came on for Arshavin. I mention the change in order to praise the Russian, who in the opening half was back to his best. It has been a while since he looked as lively and determined as that. I hope it is a sign of things to come, particularly with the upcoming visit of the neighbours for their fiftieth anniversary celebrations next week. There was also a cameo appearance by Eboue after Cahill, who else, had ruined Fabianski’s hopes of a clean sheet, but lined my pockets!
As I said in the preview, this is often a litmus test of Arsenal’s season. The result today is a significant one I feel. I’ll tell you why I hope we are building up some momentum. At the final whistle today I went and poured myself another delicious London Pride. When I came back in the screen was filled with the Chelsea substitutes for their match with Sunderland. Turnbull, Kalou, Van Aanholt, Bruma, Kakuta, McEachran, Sala. Look at that again. We had Szczesny, Eboue, Gibbs, Walcott, Denilson, Rosicky, van Persie.
Makes you think, doesn’t it?

great win
That is exactly what I mean when we have the best squad in the EPL. Look at our bench with Diaby, Ramsey, Vermaelen, Koscielny unavailable.
Look at Chelsea’s bench with Benayoun, Alex, Terry, Essien unavailable.
Turnbull, Bruma, Van Aanholt, Kakuta, McEachran, Sala, Kalou.
Szcezsny, Eboue, Gibbs, Denilson, Rosicky, Walcott, Van Persie.
I rest my case.
Excellent win, being clinical when it mattered most, very sluggish in the first half but those halves in the past would never have produced a 1 goal lead at the break.
I did not get to see the match but the Guardian report seems to be scathing on Cesc for his tackle on Distin. If it is true then opposing teams would think twice as they would expect us to dish out the same treatment.
Holic, a drink on me… ๐
Cesc did not catch Distin. It was the other way round. How the fuck the incompetent Webb booked Cesc only he knows.
Come on The Bkack Cats!!!!
Sunderland are leading Chelsea 2-0 at the Bridge with about 20 minutes to go!
What a day could this to be ๐
True Storey, Fabregas today said now we need Chelsea to drop some points, damn !
Ancelotti would be hating Fabregas right now
Seconded on that comment on Distin catching Cesc. Fuck.
Anyway, I’m so happy right now I don’t care about anything else. I hope the lads are okay though. Cahill and them scums roughed our boys up a bit.
I’m so happy. I’m gonna go see that Cesc goal again *shudder*
xx
Very nice, Holic and it’s no wonder that the occasional away fan who stumbles into the bar leaves feeling that the barman is a very decent, fair minded fellow. At this rate, we’ll be calling you “Loadsamoney”. Congratulations on the pound. Pleased you noted that certain samba something that’s added when the young great one comes on. We saw it similarly with the exception of AA. I must watch it all again.
Would Arsenalโs visit to ToffeeLand be a Dairy Box of Turkish delights? Would the Gunners come out covered in Roses? Would our Swiss dark chocoloatier in the middle of the box turn out to have a hard indigestible centre? Would our Brazil nut make the starting eleven and cream Evertonโs Crunchie middle? Would Arsenalโs Kraft and Quality be Streets beyond the penny jar on the bottom shelf that has been Everton in previous encounters between these teams?
Or would it be another nutty day, wading through treacle toffee, that would leave a bitter taste in the mouth? Would we break a tooth on some hard nut like HighTinger, or would Saha, the French Midnight Mint say โAha!โ as he liked his lips and slipped a cool one Twix our Polish Polestar and his Polos? Would Z-Cars Johny Todd ring loud on the final whistle or would Arsenal Move On Up, claim the three point Bounty and eat chocolate all the way home on the bus?
The Toffee Mints were duly dispensed by the Toffee Lady. A box of blue and yellow wrappers swathed in poppies paid respect to more sinister conflicts undertaken in lands of altogether darker chocolate. Howard Webb, the Gummy Bear in the middle blew his whistle and we were off on our journey along the Milky Way to Mars.
After Eight minutes there was still no Score. Evertonian hearts were beating like Walnut Whips as the team in blue definitely had more than their fair share of the cocoa beans and double cream. Good end to end stuff, good technique by both teams, a slow start by Cesc and Song, and travelling Gooners in grand voice dominating the airwaves.
The ToffeeMen should have taken the lead around 30 minutes but Cahill wastefully headed wide. What a Gob Stopper for home fans! And worse was to come. The Montpelier Delight that is Samir Nasri was really coming to the boil. A pitch-length sprint was no Truffle and minutes later Howard was unable stop a net bound Samir rocket, quick feet from Arshavin to Sagna and โBulls Eyeโ, a moment of Black Magic from numero trois, and it was Arsenal 1 โ The School of Science 0, just in time for the half-time chocolate oranges.
Arsene added Denilson for Jack to bring some dark, smooth, Brazilian flavour to the recipe and spice up the mix. The new ingredient added pace and texture and within minutes was the Purple Heart of a Golden Box move of Arsenal intricacy that Cesc finished with a Snicker. Arsenal 2 โ The Peopleโs Club 0. Minutes later it should have been โgame overโ but Chamkh skied a perfect cross to another Galaxy from right under the bar.
Arsenal moved into โweโve won it modeโ. Cesc was yellow carded for nearly having his ankle broken by Distin, Fabi made some very fine saves when tested and Everton got one back when Saha used Alex Song as a ladder, pushing him to the ground in the process, to nod a cross for a goal line scramble.
Arsenal to second! Good all round performance with both first pick centre-backs missing and Robin still to be recalled. Only dull spot was of Russian origin in my book.
Vodka Martini on his ticket please, barman. A double Russian if the score at the Kremlin stays as is.
Another pint of Bombadier? Don’t mind if I do.
Chelsea losing. GREAT.
Wonder if it has anything to do with Ray Wilkins?
and what a win today by the way, i though Sagna and Clichy were great today, Clichy does so well when we have Gibbs on bench! He has amazing pace and energy as well, only if he can keep his concentration level the same through out the game, Arsene Wenger and his men are learning a thing about two about defending as a team and wasting a bit of time when we are leading, no doubt the team is learning everyday!
We are winning despite of not playing well, Cesc, RVP and Theo will get to their best!
I love the Squillacci and JD partnership as well
‘Holic congrats on the takings. I should have done the same. You certainly beat the “TS Tenner” ๐
Great win, equally good write-up. Can’t wait to see your preparations for LWCs at the weekend. Got anything special planned? More guest spots in the bar? I’m sure you’ll keep us guessing….
Spot on, drona. It’s the Ray Wilkins curse immediately taking effect.
BtM
It’s such-ard life trying to keep up with your literary prowess. The Black-Jacks are nearly home and dry. Chelski? Wine your gums around that result. Tang-fastic!
3-0 Sunderland! loosing to Newcastle 1-0 doesnt sound that bad, does it now?
3-0 and the Spuds get beaten into 7th spot. What a Contrast over last weekend! ๐
Barman, Champagne tops all round please! Finest lager money can buy….
Cashley seals it. Ha fucking ha!
Chavskkki goal difference taking a big hit. Barman, I’ll take one of those London Pride thingamabobbies.
We’re staying within two pints from the top
This weekend’s results call for a huge Arsenal party!!!!!!
Chelsea, we are coming for you and LWC’s Chamakh will drive his big pole inwards! ๐

Er Hussain, care to re-phrase that my friend? ๐
“LWC, Chamakh will drive his big pole inwards :P”
Full time Chelsea 0-3 Sunderland!
HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Holic,
The traveling gooners sounded wicked!
Chamakh with a miss of the season contender.Funny guy makes all the good work except scoring some goals with his feet
Spot on Holic,
Great win and Fabbi did well too, really pleased for Sagna, Clichy needs to concentrate throughout the whole 90min. Anyway not bitching by any means.
Howard Webb is an idiot for booking Cesc what a muppet.
Chelski lost 0:3 so the gap has certainly closed.
For those who don’t follow me on Twitter…
“Memo to Abramovich. Best to sack your assistant manager after you get dry-bummed at home by Sunderland.”
Is that Lou Reed I can hear on the jukebox? Turn it up barman
Oh and good post ‘Holic.
Congrats on beating the bookies too!
Bring on them LWCs
TS,
VERY good!
Sensational weekend. Starting out, my thinking was that a draw at worst at Everton would have been OK. A win, a Chelski defeat, Man IOU and Shitty draws, – that’s really the cherry on the top of the Cherry Ripe!
Btm, I’d like to see Arsenal Nestle into the top slot next time out.
BtM,
BTW, you have definitely converted me to a Denilson fan. There IS something about his presence that makes the side tick better esp. when Fabregas is on the park.
Yes a Fab-(-regas/-ianski)-ulous weekend for The Gunners. Now it really is game-on.
Top by Xmas looks to be a real possibility if we can keep grinding out results like these plus throw in the odd overwhelming performance or two, too!
Barman? More drinks please, I belive BtM is now up for his double (White/Black) Russian?
Holic
Pissing myself laughing Top Twitt ineed!
Is that a request, nez?
‘Holic,
I thought the “urine pump” one was at least as good! ๐
It’s been a real arsenal style for about 55 minutes (2 goals collected) but afterwards, arsenal just playing the ball & seems wasting TIME to score they already created, it endangers the goal, giving TIME everton to score, so 1 goal they got,,,,fortunately, time was up , arsenal won the game,,,,please, don’t endanger your team, arsenal is an attacking squad, do your ‘character’ utilize Time to score u got.
Cheers holic the JD’s are on me. Large ones of course. Certainly is a Perfect day off to meet my new girl now!!
Love it love it love it what a great weekend of results if we can put a little run together up till Xmas we will be in fantastic position as Chelsea will have an horrendous run of games on the horizon ๐
Very very proffesional performance today – big shout out to JD who won virtually every header and was as solid as a rock also to Bac Van Basten what a strike !!!!!
Bring on them cunts from up the road !
Up The Arse,
We got over the longstanding curse of Sagna or Clichy scoring only in losses, but Chelsea may never get over the Ray Wilkins curse!
U may see how SUNDERLAND shrank CHELSEA, they didn’t waste TIME they created to score,,,,,afterall I more believe arsenal can do better ….that’s why ARSENAL Forever
Ah, I see “FIFTY YEARS & NEVER AGAIN” in big, bold, red letters at the top of the blog. Tremendous ‘Hoilc!
Have we begun preparations for the The Spuds-U-Hate already? ๐
Wonder how long before one of them will wander into this bar?
White alert everybody! ๐
We now have a tricky home game against the spuds next weekend!
Our current home form is debatable especially straight after an international week, when all of our best players will be absent!
hundred and seventy quid is a lot of money Holic!
Chelsea lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The table doesn’t look that bad now, does it?
It is well and truly game on.
This so called super Chelsea side suffer a few injuries and look what happens. Not so super after all are they?
We can do this but we have to keep up these performances. Great strong victory today.
What Goonerholic said in post 5 (can’t be arsed checking the rest yet).
How Heitinga got his card that late I also don’t know.
Anyway, I’ll have a nice drink, whatever the ‘holic pound can afford ๐
Happy day of football!
Fabianski was my man of the match. Gave us 6 points within 4 days.
Oi, thanks ‘Holic for recognising the awesomeness that is Denilson :).
Pretty weekend for The Arsenal too, i should go liquor shopping more often – Rum to be specific, it seems to be my lucky drink ;).
Go Arsenal!!
And hello MeanLean!
Hello Ollie,
How you doing? Have you told everyone that you are a secret blue? ๐
“Abramacroissant” indeed… heh!
Lovely week-end with Arsenal clawing back towards the top and all our competitors dropping points.
Finally we really looked good going forward and our back 5 continue to impress. What a difference the summer buys make! Anybody here think we would have kept Everton at bay with Almunia, Sol and Silvestre?
Not only does the future looks bright for us but with Chelski missing Lampard and Essien we finally could have the November run we’re all dreaming about.
I’m elated.
I had too many vodka shots in anticipation yesterday, but hey I can have a few more after today’s performance…
And I’m very glad that Denison gets the recognition for what BtM and myself have been saying for a long time. He isn’t spectacular but we always play better when he is in the side.
Decent win though Everton offered nothing for 30 minutes after Cesc scored the second. Good win before the derby next weekend. Here’s to hoping the internationals don’t fuck up our squad fitness.
Hey Ollie, Mean. Good to see you both.
TS, I think we may now be building up to the fiftieth anniversary. One to savour, hopefully.
Denilson was a very good sub, whether for injury or tactical reasons. But he was a bit anonymous in the frenetic latter 10 or 15 minutes when Everton made a strong push and got that goal.
Webb was pretty awful. Not just for Cesc getting a yellow for being stepped on. Exhibit B: The Everton goal. Webb distracts Sagna just as Everton play the corner short on Sagna’s side; then he misses Saha doing an Apache style ambushing jump onto Song’s back that pulls him down just before the ball is bundled on that same far post side that Song was moving toward and where he might have blocked the shot. That goal shouldn’t have counted.
Come on you gunners!
Great win
We will win the league with 1 or 2 weeks to spare.
You heard it here first
Oh boy! What a day! Brilliant result, solid performance and the chavs getting whooped by Sunderland!! Hahahahaha!
Djourou and Squillaci were excellent today and massive credit to big Johan for coming back so well after his injury nightmare. He is looking better and better.
Cannot believe cesc got booked for that “challenge” what a joke.
Now to mash some spuds next week!
Mescaline on the rocks please.
*Removes hat*
As always Holic, great to hear you and great read as per usual.
I am really in a good mood after today. I knew we would win as soon as we started to move the ball around swiftly and purposefully, always a good sign.
If we can stick that commitment and tempo into a pot and reopen on match days then we are going to be the team to beat.
I still think Arsenal can win the league and the only team capable of stopping us is in fact Arsenal.
GET IN YOU LOVELY REDS!

@BTM Great post..
Would we break a tooth on some hard nut like HighTinger, or would Saha, the French Midnight Mint say โAha!โ ๐
Minutes later it should have been โgame overโ but Chamkh skied a perfect cross to another Galaxy from right under the bar….. heheh!
@Holic.. I thought Arshavin played well today too.. I mean especially after his recent efforts
Can’t wait for derby day!!
Goody, Goody Goodison Park, once again a happy hunting ground. 3 delicous points and with the CSKA Fulhambustopskis getting turned over on their own patch the PL table makes for a happy read.
It was an entertaining game with both sides playing their part, shame that Webb did his uttermost to try and ruin it. Is this guy really considered to be the best ref in the UK?
I thought we looked a little shaky at the start but settled in well, once again AA proved why he should always start, I think he just needs to get a goal and he’ll be roaring again. We defended as a unit and really should have been more then two ahead before the last jittery ten or so minutes, real squeky bum stuff, but all in all a performance we can be proud of and an excellent result.
Lager please squire.
Cheers.
Hello ‘holics !
It’s nice to declare myself back to the bar with draws at both red and blue city of Manchester , Chavs loosing ,a win at Everton, what a day to come back to the bar! fantastic weekend indeed.
Enjoy your full pocket ‘holic ,how much did you fill your pocekt with ?
Just got back home from the pub, will read all the drinks in a while but first I need to write some stuff after an utterly brilliant afternoon! (apologies if I reiterate stuff already said!)
As I was walking home from the tube one thing struck me. There’s been a lot of talk about “yeah, ManU have been playing badly but have not lost yet and just wait until they click into gear!”
BUT: what about when the Arsenal click into gear?
Just think about it. We have been – most of the time rightly so – roundly critizised for playing below out standards, and yet here we are, only two points behind the leaders with only Man City and Chelsea having conceded fewer goals and only Chelsea having scored more. We have had injuries like few other teams, Fabregas have had World Cup fatigue, we have had goalkeeping issues and whatnot. How many games have we really clicked? Not many, I’d say. Blackpool and Bolton at home, yes, and ManCity away in fairly large patches, today saw flashes of really good stuff, and perhaps one or two more (the CL games not counted, because the opposition was so poor). But we scraped the points v Brum, v West Ham, v Blackburn away and so on despite not finding out rythm other than for short patches of those games. We are still up there at the top. We have struggled but we have won five of our last six league games if memory serves me, and only now is the injury list slowly, slowly starting to grow shorter. Why should it then be so unthinkable that we too have another gear to find?
As for today, it was a good game overall. Not great, but good. We should have had the points wrapped up long before the final whistle but we won anyway and Djourou is getting back to his best step by step and had a very good game today. Cesc is also starting to find his feet and let’s just hope there are no ill effects of having Distin land on his ankle (how the fuck could that be a yellow for Cesc???). Hope young Jack is ok as well.
Howard Webb started the game well, but messed up big time towards the end. How can he let play go on when he is talking to Sagna and the Everton players? And how can it not be a free-kick for the climb on Song by Saha? Bloody hell, the guy was more or less sitting on Song’s shoulders!
And another fine display by Fabianski. I actually looks like his calm is starting to spread to the back four, there were hardly any moments of panic today.
I also have to comment on the wonderful events at Stamford Brigde. All season I’ve been told by so many that I am wrong when pointing to the thin squad that Chelsea have but just look at what they had out there today. They had four players injured and one suspended, which is about the same as we had (Diaby, Vermaelen, Ramsey injured, Koscielny suspended of our principal players) but we had Rosicky, Walcott, RvP, Gibbs, Eboue and Denilson on our bench. All but Denilson full internationals and all experienced Premier League players save for perhaps Gibbs who still has a number of games under his belt. Bendtner, a full international with several years of Premier League experience and who despite all his faults has a habit of scoring important goals, did not even make the bench. What did Chelsea have? Their most established sub was Kalou, a quite rubbish player who wouldn’t even have been near our bench today or most other days. Other than that they had a bunch of kids who between them have about five minutes of Premier League experience. They had no proper subs for any one of the back four – and this with only two defenders out. Their biggest name in midfield was Mikel who, while a decent player, is nowhere near Essien or Lampard in quality. Ramires may well come good in the long run but is more or less unproven in the Premier Leahue. And so on. Sunderland won deservedly and it was just so funny seeing A Hole give the ball away for their third goal…
Seeing as the pub where I watched the game had run out of Boddingtons, could I have one of those here? Great, thanks!
Lars, where did you watch the game today? I’m guessing you’re watching them with Arsenal Sweden? I’ve met up a few times with you lot, but it’s been a while since.
Oh, and also, great post Lars!
Barman, give this man a pint of Boddingtons!
Lars – It’s as if your my voice. Agree with everything you said! Finally people are noticing we are the best team with the best squad in the EPL.
Scary thought, I’ve been thinking that come January, I can’t think now of anyone that AW would bring to strengthen the squad. We have loads of talent in midfield, we have 4 CB’s and good ones too, we have resolved our keeper situation, and we have excellent players up front, one of those players has scored 8 goals which is equal to Anelka and more than Malouda and Drogba but is not getting the deserved credit. Well done Marouane!
I seriously can’t think of anyone or any place that AW can bring to strengthen us. Maybe (and this is a big maybe) a CB to cover for Vermaelen’s loss cause people have started saying he’s out for the season…
Great post there Lars! Agree with you mate.
Snir
I think maybe we might sign a keeper as Amunia may well be off in january. If that did happen, then Shwarzer would make sense. If that did happen then a loan for Szczesny would make sense too.
Barman back at the drinks now Sir…
I swear I wont go behind your back again ๐
What a day to be a Gooner ah? Everything went our way today it has to be said and we look like we’re improving form game to game.
Wolves was scary, today nail biting but I thoght Everton did not deserve to win the game. They only started playing 5 minutes from time.
We need to carry this from into the Spuds on Sat and mash them a bit at The Gorve…our home record needs rectifying as well…
Onwards and Upwards!
Glass of Merlot please Barman you finest that is…and whatever everyone else wants to sip ๐
I totally agree with Lars. The paucity of the chelsea squad has been noticed for quite a while now by other gooners. What’s more, their star players are all ageing. Lampard (32), Drogba (32), Cole(29 – 30 next month), Terry (29 – 30 next month), Anelka (31).
No wonder chelsea desperately want to move to a new stadium. With the ruling about wages linked to turnover, they know the game is up. Abramovich is not splashing ยฃ60 million every transfer window now, so they will have to find a way to replace these players.
Of course, they are still a formidable outfit. Players like Zhirkov, Boswinga, Ivanovic, Alex are just finely tuned machines. To beat them we have to hope that our players stay fit and our defence remains as resolute as it was today at Everton.
Lars makes a great point also about the possibility of going up another gear. I firmly believe this is possible, as we have all seen better from arsenal in the past. Once VP, Fab, Arshavin, Walcott, Bendtner, Nasri and Chamakh all begin to click, I can see us destroying teams offensively. But it is not our offensive play that will necessarily win the league. As much as I am neutral about Lee Dixon (as I disapprove of a lot that he has said about Arsenal), I have to agree that it is what we do when we haven’t got the ball that is important, so that means the defence and the goalkeeper have to go up a level between now and the end of the season. And of course, the defensive duties need to be performed by the midfield and attacking players. If we can do this, we can hope to avoid the embarrassing defeats by the chavs and mancs last season at home.
Evening Holic
Good tough win today, looked a bit sluggish early on,probably the effects of the Wolves game, but got better as the game went on.
A footnote to the Wolves result, which will never be forgotten by the older generation of Gooners, was the last time we had a ‘ season defining ‘ must win game against them.
We won 9 games on the trot which ultimately helped us win the Title that momentous season.
What i wouldn’t give for a run like that now.!!
Cheers
clive
Let’s not get carried away… It’s still been a very long time since we achieved a convincing league win.
Today we were really clinging on, on Wednesday we had our keeper to thank, and we lost at home last weekend.
There’s still a lot of work to be done, and we should not use the Chelsea result to enhance what WE did two hours earlier.
Evening, Clive,
Shaken of the Black Paint? Looks like you might have. Not quite in Jumping Clive Flash or Street Fighting Man mode, but I sense a turn for the better toward something like Satisfaction? Or can’t you get any?
Lighten up, Toolsy. These days every league win is hard come by. “Convincing” is simply in the eye of the beholder.
Yes lets not enjoy the solid performance and result today, or the fact the chavs lost. That simply won’t do! ๐
Toolsy mate, didn’t we do well to get into a situation from which we COULD cling on? And in the end, didn’t we do well to actually cling on? Away. At Everton. That’s convincing enough for me! The Chelsea result enhances the feeling of the win, not our performance, and isn’t that a great feeling? I do agree that today doesn’t prove that we will win anything, but I’ll enjoy the win, and the result at the bridge and I’ll get you a drink of choice and urge you to do the same. Great day to be a Gooner, even if we might have (and probably will have!) days that we won’t hang on later this season. Cheers mate!
I think these hard fought wins, where the team stands firm, has to dig deep and stay concentrated for the whole game are more enjoyable, ultimately, than thrashing teams 6-0.
We are constantly told Arsenal can’t win when not playing at their peak, but we have done that a few times already this season. A scrappy, hard fought, nervy 1 nil on Saturday will do for me just fine thanks!
“the introduction of Rodwell and Denilson definitely swung things decisively in our favour (there BtM, Iโve said it!).”
That ol’ Denny magic gets everyone in the end! wonderful win – result the most important, and I also agree with Lars – there is so much more to come from us.
Evening to you Btm
Newcastle still rankles, but the dying embers are just about extinguished now.
Dare i say it though, both our wins on the road have been won with skill allied with a strong physical element as well, something i and many others thought was missing last w/end.
I think we saw elements of complacency in a similar fashion by Chelsea today, who thought they only had to turn up to roll the Black Cats.
Hopefully for us it will be lesson learnt, and nothing less than 100% is required regardless of who you play.
On a comical note, who would have thought that the only 2 sides to take maximum points from this double header week, would be Arsenal and Stoke.!!
Baby Baby we’re out of time,
cheers Clive
Have finished reading all the drinks and I see that many before me had pointed to some of the things I said. Well, you know what they say about great minds, right? ๐
Thanks all for all the kind words about my post!
@Toby: you are right, I watch almost all games (the only exceptions being when I am out of town) with the Stockholm branch of Arsenal Sweden. I am a board member of said supporters’ club and also what we call an ambassador for the town of Stockholm which means that I along with a few others organize the gatherings for the games. If you live in Stockholm, come join us! We’re at O’Learys in Gamla Stan and there’s alway at least 25 of us and for the bigger games we can be 70 or 80. And of course, if anyone else in this bar happens to be in Stockholm when we are playing and wants to see a game (every single Premier League and Champions League game is shown live here!), you are most welcome to watch it with us. Just let me know and I’ll save you a seat!
@Mug: you might be on to something there. Perhaps loaning Szczesny out to, say, Wolves for the remainder of the season in January would be a good idea.
@Muppet: very good point about the age structure of the Chelsea squad. Players like Kakuta and McEachran had better come good rather quickly or they will have absolutely jack shit coming through from below and for how long will Abramovic remain interested? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we sit here in five years going “oh yeah, do you remember when Chelsea bought all those players and won a few titles? So what do you all think about their chances of getting promoted this year?” (ok, they won’t plummet that far but one can dream, right?)
Yeah, Lars, I actually think I’ve met you on occasion, but I’m not very good with remembering faces, last time being the 4-4 against the spuds. Was working as a journalist at the time, got asked by somebody about perhaps writing for your magazine. I live on Sรถdermalm, so I’ll join come join you again soon!
Lars,
We can dream. I think the other point is that City will make it harder for the chavs. With 2 billionaires on the block, not all star players will go to just the one club. This will blunt both of them somewhat. We know we are just trying to realise potential now. We don’t have to buy 4-6 players every transfer window.
@Toby: do that, we are there for every game!
A fantastic end to a great weekend.
Everything came up ‘Roses’ ๐
A pint for Lars please barman, and one for yourself.
Its not a marvelous arsenal win , but an important one, if it was last season it would have been a draw with arsenal playing beautiful ball but no goals, still not impress with some of the defending but it is getting better. Real good news Arsenal is not at their best and there is a lot more to come.
The Chelsea lost shows one important thing no game is a easy game and Chelsea underestimated Sunderland and paid dearly. WE must learn from our mistakes and Chelsea’s so that we dont become complacent, there is a lot of football left to show the true Arsenal.
Bar keep could i have a red stripe , because i am a jamaican
Can’t wait for Saturday with the way we’ve rung up the victories over the last four days so my early take on the Spurs match is 3-2 with an Arshavin brace.
It is so good to have a good header of the ball at the back – well done JD, you’re looking great.
Den was terrific – he reads the game so well and plays with his head up – always looking for the right pass.
Fab continues to impress – is he the real deal?
Full backs were solid – a plague on Webb for allowing the Blues corner whilst Bacs was still distracted – the Missus went wild!
AA looks to be back to his best.
Nasri was great.
Cesc is getting better and had a good game in spite of being booked for being trodden on.
We must continue to work hard and concentrate all the time.
Role on Saturday.
Congratulations everyone (except maybe Clichy, AGAIN) for a great performance.
I can’t believe there has been no mention of THAT Nasri run in the second half! It was brilliant, it lasted only a few seconds but memories of our third against Porto came rushing back into my mind. What a brilliant goal it could have been! (As brilliant as Sunderland’s first against the Mercenaries today).
Fabianski: you’re my hero.
Wait, let me write this again:
Fabianski: you’re my hero.
HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA. What an unlikely statement this seemed a few months ago away at Wigan/Porto/Blackburn.
Who knows, maybe one day, just maybe, I’ll write the same thing about Clichy…
Nah…not gonna happen..
Is it?
On a more sober note: This wasn’t a very impressive performance by our standards, and we looked a bit shaky when Everton finally woke up (too little, too late for them), but hey, these games win you trophies, and if our players (including the bench -except Ebouรฉ :p can keep fit, and others return from injury -except Almunia :p) then we’ll really be in with a shout.
To think that we finished third last season with a ridiculous number of injuries to our top players is very impressive! Something Chelsea will have to find out by themselves this season.
As for UTD, if I’ve learned one thing in the EPL , it is that Stoke should be playing in the Championship. But if I’ve learned two things is that one must NEVER EVER write the mancs off.
But that is for another day to worry about, a less Perfect Day.
Another Grimbergen for me please.
The media reports that focus on Cesc’s supposed 2nd bad tackle in a week are lazy. Very lazy. As ‘Holic said it took one replay to show that Distin actually catches Cesc’s ankle.
Has Cesc picked up 5 yellow cards now?
Oooohhhhh 2be a gooner. What a great week for our mighty club. Just have 2say hello to the main man ‘holic from a gooner from down under. I love your blog brother & keep up the good work. UP THE ARSE….
Good win today. I do not know what everyone is surprised about this Denilson talk. The problem with him last year that was stressed by a lot of people and and in the drinks myself after the stoke fa cup loss was Denilson’s lack of hustle in a string of games down the wing instead of chasing back defensively. It was even speculated he had been carrying an injury to account for his laziness but he has picked it up today and maybe Wilshere’s hustle and driving team’s back with his defensive pressure is a major wake up call for Denilson. He may start to realize his defensive work rate needs to improve.
Chamakh had a real chance to put the game to bed with a half hour left and im pretty sure he missed one like that earlier in the season at home. just wanted another heart wrenching finish of course and make holic’s pockets bigger.. no shame in that!
Let’s make a run in November and take it one match at a time.
I don’t want to hear about Denilson. He had 10 OK minutes but beyond that he was rather shit. The only reason our lack of effort wasn’t exposed was because Everton were knackered. Clichy was shit, Cesc apart from the goal was off and Arshavin was total balls. Us winning isn’t totally dissimilar to Man United managing. The only real bright spot is Fabianski getting us 9 points in the last month. Up your shit Arsenal.
http://www.specsavers.co.uk/
About Denilson, I forgot to mention him last night but others have done and rightly so. To me he is starting to look more and more like the Denilson of the 2008/9 season where he was perhaps our most important player. Last season was disrupted by the injury to his back and maybe it isn’t until now that he is getting back to full fitness again. We have real depth in midfield, and perhaps now we can actually afford to rest Song now and again.
Right then, I shall now plug my USB memory stick into my computer and watch the avi file of MOTD from yesterday that through some kind of magic was found on my laptop this morning. If anyone sees my boss walking towards me, could you give me a heads-up? That would be great!
(actually, tbh I don’t have to watch out for the boss because I have a great degree of freedom in when I do my work so if I choose to watch MOTD now and work an extra hour some other day that’s perfectly fine – my job is fekkin great in that and may other ways. And my colleague next to me is an Everton fan, it’ll be interesting to hear his views on the game when he eventually turns up)
A cup of tea with a shade of milk, please Mr Barman!
can yellow cards be appealed? Commentator on the match should have got one for a shite call “definately a foul” despite seeing that Cesc got trodden on – maybe Distin should have got one for going down in a heap – oh I just mashed someones foot I better fall over and see if I can get something out of this…
Despite that I think the gunners did well – its good to see we are starting to take some pride in some decent defending… just as important that the opposition dont score…
It would be great if we could send off commentators… getting tired of the bagging of the arsenal boys…
We always seem to keep the ball better when Denilson is on – and having Rosicky come on was a good defensive move by the manager. Someone pointed out the runs of Nasri – he has some good pace to go with the trickery…
I share the excitement now in the other posts seeing what we have available in the squad now. Time to peel some spuds!
P.S. ALso I think Djuoru has been great in the last few games he has been playing – he is one that continous to improve and will be hard to leave out of the team soon.
Lars(97) at 7:59 am,
Agree about Denilson. Last season his development was hampered by the back injury. This season he is coming back to his best and the way he reads the game is just wow…
pat, I usually change the language(Thankfully, most of the time I have options) to one I dont understand. This way I dont have to listen to the crap the commentators put out but I can enjoy the atmosphere at the stadium..
Lars – I have been converted, initially by BtM. Denilson + Cesc in midfield makes us tick and frees Cesc to cut open opposition defences with his passing skills. Seen the second-half now on ATV-O and I thought that Deni’s intro made all the difference. If I find myself in Stockholm on a match day/evening I now know where to go….
‘Holic – Appreciate the myopic correction – some folk are tough to please. I’m now on Lilly-White alert for interlopers for the rest of the week.
‘Nasri – 3-2 sounds great. The “TS Tenner” is for 3-1. Arshavin will score and your namesake.
RVP – I think Clichy just has to have at least one slip-up per game. Thankfully, the major one yesterday didn’t really cost us. Stiff competition from Gibbs might help to correct that. Overall, I’m still a fan of Gael but I fear I may be in a minority these days.
Remember remember
the 15th of November
Adams9802 medication wearing off is it?
Good morning holic, just like to say post tied in with my view of the game also, specsaver link made me laugh, are you sure it was same poster as at 56 and if so what went went so downhill for him between posts
Nice post, ‘holic, and that bit at the end comparing benches really was quite striking. It’s probably fair to say that only Citeh have a similar amount of talent to spring off the bench these days.
Interesting what you say about Arshavin, I didn’t think he was up to much at all and I thought it was telling that he was subbed a bit earlier than Wenger usually does these things. Also, without wishing to start conspiracy theories, wasn’t his complete lack of reaction to Sagna’s goal a bit weird? Check out the replay, he doesn’t look the slightest bit bothered. I sometimes get the feeling that he thinks it’s Arshavin FC and the rest are just lucky to play in it. He gave the ball away cheaply at times and didn’t track back enough for my liking.
Other than that, no complaints. Fabianski looks to be the best shot-stopper around at the moment but still needs a lot of work when it comes to dealing with crosses, interesting to see how Everton recognise the threat of Wilshere by physically targetting him; let’s hope that Wenger hasn’t sent out the message that it works by withdrawing him at half-time.
Results elsewhere show that the title is very much up for grabs, let’s hope that the team can start showing their away form at home, and that the crowd at the Grove get behind them for the full ninety, instead of turning up for the eighty minutes expecting a goalfest and then buggering off early to the theatre or wherever it is so many of them have to be on a Saturday evening.
@Eboues hand: I honestly don’t think Arshavin not tracking back that much is due to being lazy (at least not all of it), I just think he doesn’t understand defending very well because if you look at the times when he does track back, most often he simply makes the wrong decisions and runs in every direction apart from the one he should be going.
As for not celebrating the goal, he does that all the time and I agree that it looks very strange. On the other hand, quite often you also see him smiling and talking a lot on the pitch and he did celebrate our second goal with Cesc and the others.
Djourou is an awesome 4th choice CB but his ranking is definitely not set in stone. The “higher ranked” CBs are on alert that their places are at risk with him playing so well.
Does anyone know whether Fabianski was officially presented with the Barclays MOTM? As Sky didn’t show our post-match responses.
Goonertown,
I think it was Fabregas

Did ne1 happen to catch zenden’s sad attempt to copy Gyan’s dance wen sunderland scored the second?
Its was off the chart hilarious!!!
Haha African i had a laugh on that too, Gyan has gone out and said that the team should learn to dance with him :p
Hes a top class striker, brings a lot to the team, i thought he was over-rated at the world cup because of the fact that he was the only African to have done something back then, but he has proven me wrong for sure and im glad he made himself count against the Chavs!
As others have been talking about the bench, i must admit that we surely have the strongest team, forget about City, they are not a team, when you have Van Persie, Walcott as un-used subs at Arsenal, you know that the good days are coming back, i remember us playing without our spine, i.e: Almunia, Verma, Fabregas and RVP for most of the last season and still we never got the credit for it, but well who cares about what they think about us, I honestly believe if the Arsenal we know keep turning up, we will win the league Inshallah, and by what i have seen at the Bridge and OT, i am pretty optimistic about the league ๐
One Fab got us to 3rd last season, lets hope two Fabs that we have now can help us get that silver-ware!
@Glennw: Yes it was the same poster (me) and the only thing that I can say in my defense is that between the two posts I consumed large quantities of sake. Indefensible really but as I see what I posted the second time you’re absolutely right. Apologies for drunken posting.
@ Adam9802
We’ve all done a bit of that from time to time…. ๐
Good night out?
Nasri,
Until TV is fit, the worst DJ can be is thrid choice. Any bets on when The Verminator might actually play again???
A9802, no judgement here, fella. I have been known to enjoy a little tipple now and again ๐
Lars,
Our Little Russian is a bit strange but that’s why we love him, right?
On yesterday’s performance, I’d say he’s heading towards a decent run of form. I’d back him to score against the Spuds on Saturday too.
Ready for a Boddies yet?
Evening ‘Holic
Still baiting those LWCs on Twitter I see ๐
in recent times i got a bit frustrated with arshavin but i saw this and fell in love with him again have a listen please guys!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN9n-m1838Y
Hey TS.
Has to be done! Tomorrow will be the start of the build-up on here. Probably a historical piece of some description. I’ll have to see how the creative juices are flowing ๐
And yes, lots of banter, I suspect. I know some are nervous about doing it before the event, but that’s what the rivalry is all about, isn’t it?
‘Holic
Abso-f*ckin-lutely!
See earlier tweet – even if we lost they’ve got nowhere to hide on the “50 years and still waiting” front ๐
Loved the comment from someone who said that in 1961 he stopped breast-feeding – classic ๐
I say, keep ’em coming…
TS: I can’t really make up my mind about Arshavin. He seems to be a very, very complicated character and he can be so, so frustrating to watch but I have to admit that I have a soft spot for completely unpredictable players. I don’t know why really, perhaps I like it when they show that they are, after all, human ๐
Oh, and I am very much ready for a Boddie!
Lars,
Eccentricity is often a sign of true genius ๐
Barman? A barrel of Boddies for Lars please and as much as you can handle yourself.
Lars, Arshavin is frustrating a lot of fans at the moment, but I think the person who is most frustrated by his form, is himself.
Up until recently he was a guy who played with a smile on his face, even when the neanderthals were trying to kick him off the park. When was the last time you saw that smile? His body language suggests to me he is really not enjoying his football at the moment.
And yet despite this, he has been a hefty creator to our goals tally this season, albeit not scoring as many himself as we would like.
You will have guessed from this post, and many of mine before, that I am very much an Arshavin apologist. OK he doesn’t bust a gut to track back, but he sees things other players don’t and for me, he has that extra something to unpick any defence that we play.
Some players just need to be indulged – if all we want is our players to run around a lot, “giving their all” then we may as well watch Stoke. (God help us).
And TS, I truly believe AA is a genius.
Any Boddingtons left?
TS, I’ve certainly no clue when Vermaelen will be available but at this point I’d settle for a TV of a Christmas present, and not a plasma.
Lets not get too carried away by this result. Yes we held on well, but Everton shouldn`t have started with just an injury prone veteran up front. AW admitted we were `too conservative` and that this contributed to us having to hang on for the last 20 minutes or so, but his decision to bring on Eboue rather than Walcott, suggests he` beginning to adopt a more conservative approach himself.
Isn`t it marvellous how Flappy has suddenly become a hero. I applaud him for the great saves he is making, but then all of our three squad keepers are good shot stoppers. Let`s just hope his confidence holds up.
Good comment that the only team that can stop us winning the title is ourselves, as has been the case for the last few seasons.
Biscuitbum, in most respects I’m not sure if Eboue is the “conservative” approach necessarily but compared to Walcott in this case I see your point. Retreating further into a shell was not what we needed.
I really love arshavin, and I think that as a character, as a human being, he’s not just feeling that he belongs at the Arsenal.
But if he can find that motivation, he can be world-class.
Even while just “doing his Job” for us he is decisive, just think what could be when/if he can indulge his talent.
I love Arshavin and I just can’t deny…
Ps: I may be slghtly drunk, so apologies if i’m not making any sense; too many Leffes tonight.
@adams9802 fair play done same myself with a text plenty of times. Reckon it would make a good read if we all put a post in on same night when pissed! With a win on Saturday we will have all afternoon on the juice, we could do happy pissed posts in the evening
@Glennw
I’m already there..
Oh to be a gooner
@RVP’s right foot – why do you think Arsh doesn’t feel he belongs at Arsenal?
News that PSV playmaker Ibrahim Afellay will be signed by Barcelona in January must be good news for us keeping Cesc. What are the odds on Barcelona wanting two additional playmakers to go along with Xavi?
Arshavin is magical, he is a genius without a doubt, its so pleasing to the eye when him and Fabregas or him and Nasri link up, its simply breath-taking, i think Arshavin’s form best defines our form as a team as well, we have been up and around but havent been at our best this season so far i believe, the best is yet to come,im betting on a great December for Arshavin, with Manchester United and Chelsea fixture, i see him scoring at the Old Trafford and Emirates as well, dont worry about what he looks like, how he smiles and how he celebrates with his team-mates, he is just “different” from the other footballers around, and trust me when he really does start believing that Arsenal can win the title or something, thats when you will get to see the best of him, and on the other hand i also think hes a player who you cannot be playing more than 100 minutes per week, hes a gem which we should not let go, heard about him being offered a two-year deal as well, now how often has AW given a two year contract to someone who is above 30 ? Just goes on to show us where AW rates Arshavin.
Arshavvvvvvin!
Found this pretty incredible stat on Fabianski (for those who don’t know, Opta ditches bits of their stats collection on Twitter @optajoe):
“83% – Only Petr Cech of Chelsea (85%) has a better saves-to-shots ratio than Lukasz Fabianski of Arsenal. Polecat.”
Considering this includes his pre-return blunders, it’s fair to say that since Fabianski replaced the “injured” Almunia he’s the best shot-stopper in the league at the moment. Don’t look any further for the reason why we’re back in contention. If Almunia was still in goal we’d probably be fighting for 4th spot with all the hopefuls.
Fabianski has been hiding the issue that got us though the rough patch in the the first place: we do not score enough. Our strategy relies on scoring more than the opposition and we have been sub-par upfront for quite a while now, Everton included. There are signs of improvement and hopefully Arshavin will regain his clinical finish soon and so will RvP and Bendtner. When that happens Chelski and United will find it hard to keep the pace. Until then I think we’re level but no more.
Other tidbits from Opta:
“Arsenal have scored 77 Premier League goals against Everton – more than any team vs. any single opponent in the competition. History.”
“106 – Games in all competitions since Bacary Sagna’s last goal for Arsenal. Unexpected.”
“3 – Arsenal havenโt kept three consecutive clean sheets away from home in the Premier League since May 2005. Block.”
“35% – Percentage of games ending as draws in the PL this season, the highest ever proportion in top-flight history. Levellers.”
“42% – The average percentage of shots that hit the target in the Premier League (excluding blocked attempts). Education.”
“3 – Tottenham have won more games from losing positions than any other team in the Premier League this season. Resurrection.”
“11 – Arsenal have picked up more points away from home in the Premier League than any other team. Travelcard.”
Not our greatest ever performance but one full of guts and spirit. If we ever become clinical agian then we will start to batter certain sides.
Many positives for me. Flappy again produced a fine display. Arshavin played some of his best stuff and Nasri just gets better and better. I am glad that others are now starting to get Denilson at long last. He is not spectacular but as I have said many times before, he does all of the scruffy stuff and does it well. For me the side is far more balanced when he plays. He links the play as well as anyone.
A good few days and a good 6 points after the shambles of the weekend before. All in all a good response. Now for the Spuds. I do not just want to beat them, I want to rediscover that clinical side and give them a right good thrashing.
Keep the faith.
@Sniff
Lack of success with us?
With this kind of character (an artist) it could be anything, it may not even be a footballing reason. Could be London, Wenger, not playing in his preferred position, the lack of trophies, Clichy (ok that last one is probably just me, some of you now know how I .. Err..”rate” Clichy).
If he can find the belief though, Arshavin could be a fantastic forward for us. This is the reason why I believe letting him go would be a big mistake.
Thanks guys it was a good night out. It would be rather interesting if we all got smashed at attempted to post, it would make for some comical reading over coffee in the morning.
Hi,
Arshavin is moody, infuriating at times…you just feel like kicking him up his arse when he doesn’t track back ๐
But you need him in the team, because he can produce moments of pure genius..he can turn a match
PS:I can’t help but chuckle when he looses the ball and invariably comes back and kicks the other player in the air and concedes a foul ๐
Cheers and Bring on the Sp*rs
@Matt: that stat about us having scored more against Everton than any other team has against any other team is not that remarkable when you think about it. Firstly, the stats are sligthly skewed by the fact that in recent years we have, as I’m sure you all remember, walloped them 7-0 at home and 6-1 and 4-1 away so that’s 17 goals right there in only three games – but more importantly we have simply played them more often than most other teams have played any other team since neither team has been relegated for ages and ages.
Afternoon holic and holics, a quick point about cescs booking on Sunday and that is that Webb didnt see it at least he didn’t see the contact because you can clearly see him turn away to follow distins clearance and then turn back when the crowd roars by which time both players were rolling on the deck so he booked cesc for something he didn’t see him do. Top ref my arse!
Good afternoon ‘Holic & ‘Holics
So, to add spice to our away match at Villa Park, it looks like we’ll be lining up against our old hero Bobby Pires.
That should add a touch of spice to what waalready going to be a very full-flavoured match of football. I fancy our chances for another away win.
Bring on The Spuds & Braga first… and get well soon Jack!
Barman? Strong cup o’tea (builders) and a choccy d please, ta ๐
@TS: if I’m not mistaken, Pires won’t be eligible for selection before January since he was not in the list of 25 submitted by the end of August. As far as I know there is no exception for players who were without a contract, so he’ll have to wait until January to play for them in the Premier League.
Lars,
Yes, was wondering about that but Pravda.com reported it as a possibility. What I am sure about is the reception that he’ll get back at The Ems in May, assuming that he plays in that game.
Is it too early for a Boddies?
Vieira and Pires must be older than Giggs and Scholes, or close to it. I’m surprised none of our rivals is after Tony Adams, but maybe I spoke too soon? Now John Terry may be crocked for months and we shouldn’t be surprised considering how many games he has played. We keep on hearing that Arsenal is too young to win anything (not that we are any more) but I’d rather be too young than too old.
…. and doesn’t score or assist ๐
Personally, I am too old but I hope you saw my point anyway.
Nasri,
Now matter how old they are, it’s a mere trifle of years compared to how long it’s been since LWCs last won the title ๐
“50 years and never again”?
I think I’ll have a drink to that please barman.
…. understood your point completely
Good point, TS. 50 years. Was the computer even invented yet? How about diapers?
Nasri,
It’s ‘Holic’s point of course, I’m just plagiarising as usual.
Wouldn’t it be lovely if we beat Spuds to go top on Saturday (albeit for a few hours)?
The neighbours should be used to us succeeding at their expense by now, esp. in their own back yard.
50 years ago, I’m not sure you could even send a telex?
TS -Sorry about the late response.
I will have to wait until I get home to view that clip as work do not allow access!
It’s just that I thought Mersy said Fabi was MOTM!
Goonertown,
No need to apologise, but very polite nonetheless.
Please have an after-work beer on me. Cheers!
So now both Terry and Alex are out for long spells in the middle of the Novosibirsk defence. It could be an injury crisis of near-Arsenal proportions (if they get a few more in the next week or so, at least!)
Da comrade nasri but hold your horses, 2 players out would be like an empty treatment room for us. Let them have 11 palyers out like we did last year and we’ll see if they still qualify for CL football.
Not that I’d wish that on any team…. well maybe one…. after we’ve beaten them with a full strength squad on Saturday (hopefully) ๐
