Nasrificent, Samir And All Of You
Jan 1st, 2011 by 'holic
Days don’t come much harder, in some ways, or much more rewarding in others.
Three points at Birmingham, given what has happened there on our most recent visits, have provided a much-needed lift. The expected fierce contest transpired. Not surprisingly there were challenges by Johnson and Bowyer that caused much debate, but it would be wrong of me to brush aside the blatant penalty that the home team were denied when Robin van Persie handled in the opening half.
Robin was a central figure in the contest. His free-kick, and it was good to hear the beaten manager acknowledge the legitimacy of the award in his post-match interview, provided the opening goal, but the Dutchman would miss another trio of fine opportunities. When his full sharpness returns, provided we are able to maintain the high-tempo approach demonstrated so ably a couple of times this week. we will have much to look forward to.
Having praised Alex McLeish for his reaction to the opener, I must express the disgust that must have been felt by most Gooners listening to the absurd commentary on ESPN. Sadly when you are as low down the pecking order as ESPN, the commentating options open to you are only those discarded by the main players. Jon Champion and Chris Waddle provide about as balanced a view as you would expect on a three legged camel in quicksand.
There is no doubt Arsenal earned the right to play as they dug in during the opening forty-five. After the break however, and roared on as usual by the best away support in the top flight, the Gunners gave a masterclass in passing and movement with pace and precision. At the heart of most of it were the skipper and the man who continues to look every bit as influential this season, Samir Nasri. The pair exchanged set-ups as 1-0 became 3-0.
Over twenty minutes remained when Johnson, fortunate to be on the pitch, applied the last touch to Cesc’s fierce drive across goal. Those who visited the drinks prior to the game will have seen I had punted on 5-0 for the sheer hell of it, and with more attention to detail from van Persie, Theo Walcott, or Jack Wilshere I would have collected. That would have been too much to ask, I guess?
Thank You So Much
By now, it would appear, most of you will know the other major reason for this being such a very hard day for me. I have to say thank you for the many messages I have received by a variety of mediums, and the kind words you have had to say about ‘holicdad, who passed away in the early hours of this morning.
The next few days will provide a number of distractions from the blog for me, so I apologise in advance for not maintaining the level of posting I have tried to reach in the last year. Hopefully things will return to normal shortly, and yes, you will not be surprised to hear there will be a ‘holicdad themed post, as soon as I can put the best memories into some semblance of order.
May I wish all of you ‘holics a very happy, but more importantly healthy, new year.

This victory was in tribute to ‘holic Dad. Now let’s go on and win the league for him.
All the best to you and the family ‘holic
Top post.
My condolences regarding your father.
Nice to hear from you ‘Holic, and a top post as usual.
Couldn’t agree more about the ESPN commentary – I got fed up and ventured on to a stream in French.
City on Wednesday is going to be massive – bring it on.
My condolences to your and your family, ‘holic. And top blog, given the circumstances.
All the best.
Really well written. Sorry about your dad.
Only Arsenal blog I read, as usual cracking stuff.
Deepest sympathies re your Dad.
Absolute top draw from the Gunners. You’ll never forget him. Hope the win makes things slightly better. R.I.P Dad. Massive glass of Rioja
Thanks for the update Holic and take care!
My condolences.
Sorry to hear about your loss ‘holic
Condolences on the loss of your Dad. Tough time keep the chin up.
My very best wishes to you and yours Holic
So very sad to hear about ‘holicdad. I’ve seen you write in this blog many times about what a wonderful man he was and I can only say it must be true because if he was anything like you then he would have been a brilliant fella.
I’m meeting up with father White today in preparation for the SCG test. It’s these occassions that live long in the memory with the result immaterial. I’m sure you have many such memories of your dad. Thinking of you at this difficult time, who knows? Maybe one day we can meet for a pint and discuss such things ourselves. All the best mate.
Sorry for your loss ‘Holic
Condolences on your father. Love the blog : )
Sorry for your loss. Looking forward to reading more about him in the blogs.
Great post holic. Sorry to hear about your loss. I’m sure your readers’ thoughts are with you.
Great win – feeling positive about January if Nasri and Fabregas can maintain their good understanding of each other, if walcott and arshavin can provide telling cameo appearances and once RVP’s radar is back working again. Nice to see a clean sheet too. Bring on Citeh!
Sorry for your loss ‘hols,
Very sorry to hear about your sad loss, may he rest in peace. Really impressive, hard working performance tonight. Couldn’t agree more about ESPN, the Tesco Value range of sports broadcasting! Hope to see some retrospective action taken against that animal Bowyer too.
Hi Holic,
Firest and foremost my sincere condolences to you and you family. Thoughts and prayers go out to you Sir.
Great post as always, i think with the engine slowy starting to up the revs we could hit full speed jus at the right time in more than one competition. The cup runs will keep the squad satisfied as the need for rotation will be more freqent then the one off 8-man wholesale change made against Wigan! Im the league we have a real chance to gain momentum…my only concern is the champs league..lookin forward to it though!!
All good wishes to you and your family ‘Holic. As ever, stuff like this puts football in perspective. That said, let’s win that fucking title for Gooners past and present !
All the best. Sorry to hear about holicdad. Great blog considering the circumstances. Glad to see the arse put up a performance to send your dad off in style.
Couldn’t agree more about ESPN. Absolute disgrace, but it doesn’t really
surprise the gooner faithful.
C wat happens when we don’t have that gud 4 nothing Diaby in the team? We actually put on a show. I still can’t figure out WTF Wenger wants frm failures like Diaby.
Big ups to Nasri, ur the man buddy!
Sorry to hear the bad news Holic all the best to you and those close I’m sure he will be in good company on the subs bench upstairs and will be roaring on the gunners alongside Rocky and the Bear and all other gooners that have sadly passed,
Deep sympathy for your loss, from what’s been said on this blog about him he seemed like a great man. Excellent post in the circumstances.
Great start to the year. We’re in a great position to push on from here.
All the best to you holic
My condolences. All the best to you and yours
Condolences on your bereavement. Wishing you and your family a long and happy life.
Sorry about your loss. ESPN are a disgrace.
You should know that I’m proud to have been a ‘holic follower for many years, and that I one day hope to be lucky enough to share a glass with you!
My deepest condolences to you and your family Holic. My thoughts are with you.
CoYRRR’s
You write such a wonderful blog holic.
The last thing my father thought me was how to face death with dignity and self respect. My sincere respects to you and your family.
Very sorry to hear about your Dad, ‘holic.
‘Holic, best wished to you and yours, sorry to hear about you old man.
Thank you so much for all your great, well-written, thoughtful, balanced posts ‘Holic, from a long time reader but first time drinker. Many comiserations on the loss of your father; from all you’ve written about him over the years it sounds like he was a true gent. Our thoughts are with you. Let’s hope the team can do us all proud this year like he would have wanted.
I am very sorry to hear about your father. I lost a good friend of mine the same day we beat United 1-0 in 2002.

Arsenal Fire Three Gun Salute as Last Post Sounds for Holicdad
In a victory dedicated by ‘holics everywhere to the memory of Holicdad, Arsenal blue into town and blue Birmingham away without really needing to blow anywhere close to top gear. The result was testament to Arsene Wenger’s mid-week match selection. Arsenal looked fresh and “up for it”. Birmingham, who fielded the team that drew with ManUre, were flat and knackered in comparison and were never in contention.
Fox flicked over to St Andrews, only to reveal the stadium apparently one third empty and Alex McLeish looking like he’d had a couple of Hogmanay Hoochs too many. But then again, he always does. Our line up looked strong with the reintroductions of Djourou, Van Persie, Theo and Nasri looking particularly pleasing to this Gooner’s eyes.
Early play was slow tempo and scrappy with Birmingham niggling and trying to disrupt Arsenal‘s flow. A foul just outside the box presented Van Persie with a dress rehearsal free kick. Moments later, the real thing resulted in Robin hitting the net for the first time in the league this season, courtesy of a deflection off Bowyer’s arm. Arsenal in the ascendancy.
But it wasn’t all one-way traffic and it took a fabulous save from Fabianski to deprive former Gunner Larsson from a free kick from 30 yards. Minutes later our Polestar threw a beautiful ball to Nasri who carried it forward before laying it on a plate for RvP. Rusty Robin failed to take the opportunity. Robin did it again from 8 yards only five minutes later. Game should be over at 3-0 by now.
At the other end, a silly Alex Song block resulted in a free kick swinging onto Jerome’s head. A beautiful nod on to Johnson threatened another set-piece horror equalizer, but Johnson the profligate thumped over from six yards.
One nil at the turn. By 50 minutes, Birmingham had racked up three yellows for nasty foul with Cesc suffering badly from a double footed stud-lunge. Bowyer in the meantime stamped on Sagna’s thigh then, again unpunished, threw Bacs to the ground with the ref’s back turned. What a nasty bar steward he is.
A great Cesc-Nasri move brought an outstanding save from Foster. But Arsenal’s second was coming and the delay was only about three minutes. Nasri to Cesc to Nasri – a beauty into Foster’s bottom left – and a well deserved chorus of Na-Na-Na, Nasri, Samir Nasri from the travelers.
Another brilliant move of the “Arsenal only” variety ended with a Cesc rocket that Foster couldn’t hold and it bounced Ding-Dong-Dann into the net for three-nil to the Arsenal. Wilshere should have scored his birthday goal moments later from a RvP cut-back.
Arshavin and The Rhythm King came on for Theo and Neutron Jack as Arsenal began to play practice ground football to run the clock down. Both almost scored with their first touch with Theo and Jack resting for the Shitty game next Wednesday, looking on admiringly.
A great start to The New Year with super performances all round. Only Birmingham’s second loss at home since around 1066 with last previous 3-0 inflicted by William Wallace and the Jacobite army. A home win on Wednesday will make it 10 points out of a Christmas stocking-full potential 12. We’re up for that!
A particular note of praise to the Polestar, the Pole Between the Poles. Doubtless his clean sheet today will go unremarked by many. He didn’t put a foot, hand or head wrong today. As his confidence grows, so will that of those in front of him. Well done Lukasz.
Dont worry Holic, Holicdad is in a far better place. May God grant you the ability to recover from your loss.
so sorry about your dad ‘holic.my heartiest condolences.
OK, this is only a high school game. But I’m looking forward to seeing this young man playing at The Emirates.

Sincere Condolences Holic, Holic’dad was a true Gent and he is at a much better place tonight and he must be really happy with the Arsenal display as well 🙂
Inna li’llahe Wa’inna Ileh Rajiun 🙂
We’re sorry for your loss Sir. Deepest condolences on behalf of every Gooner here in India. May his soul RIP.
My sincerest condolences on your loss, ‘holic.
Great performance that you should hold as a tribute to your old man, were all very sorry to hear about your loss.
On a side note and in fairness to espn, despite having a nuckle dragging commentry team, they did take time out towards the end of the show to point towards the rough treatment we recieved and suggest that its something the fa should act upon.
It should be standard practice but seems to be a slight swerve from the normal, gutless, one eyed reviews we see on sky and/or the beeb.
Ill have whatever Holicdad wouldve and raise it in the air.
As I had to say to another Gooner earlier this week.
“Much Love.
Big Hugs.
Remember we’re here for you”
Never easy, mate.
Look forward to having a toast to holicdad (and others) on Jan 22nd.
Dubz
I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, Goonerholic.
‘Holic, no need to apologise for any lack of posting.
A very solid performance today. I’m sure the ‘Holicdad would have been proud of the boys in red and white.
And Lee Bowyer is an utter twat. We refused to be bullied and in desperation he lunged out at everything he could see. How he stayed on the pitch is unbelievable, he could have walked for the kick on Sagna alone. And that muppet Carr attacking Cesc in a very appared retaliation for Cesc’s accidental back-heel to Carrs’ head should at least have been a yellow and you could argue that it should have been red because of the retaliatory and to-hell-with-the-ball-I’m-going-for-the-man nature of the tackle.
The handball on RvP is not a definite penalty despite what ignorant pundits (who in many cases don’t even seem to know the laws of the game) would have you believe. You could definitely argue that the arm is there because Robin is throwing himself towards the ball and simply misses the header, and you could argue that you should keep your hand down. It was without a doubt NOT a deliberate hand-to-ball movement, so the question is if he put his arm out to make himself bigger in order to block the ball and my answer, without having seen umpteen replays, would be no because the arm was there as a natural part of his movement (Robin trying to keep his balance and perhaps also preparing himself for landing after the header). He tried to head the ball and missed it and even though the ball hit his arm that is not a penalty according to the laws of the game.
Anyway, good to see RvP getting closer to his best and Cesc and Nasri worked together very well today. And once again, Koscielny is a much, much better player when paired with Djourou than with Squillaci – just like Squillaci has looked much more solid when playing with Djourou. Kos and Squill just don’t seem to be a working combination for some reason. Hopefully, Djourou can start playing more games from now on – I read somewhere tonight that we have not lost a single point in any of the league games that Djourou has started for us this season, if that is true it is a rather remarkable stat.
Lastly, a huge applause for the magnificent travelling support. The Arsenal songs were loud and clear on my telly for the whole game. Hearing the Eduardo chant at 3-0 up was very nice.
RIP HOLICDAD
My condolences, ‘holic.
So sorry to hear about your Dad. All the best to you and your family at this time

My sincerest condolences to you and your family holic. May your father rest in peace.
I’m so proud and glad that the boys performed so admirably on such a sad day for you. I’m sure that the lads’ll do the same against the mercenaries on Wedneday with our new settled lineup and tactical maturity!
The least said about ESPN the better! Their ineptitude knows no limits! Muppets!
My deepest sympathies on the loss of your father. I wanted to express my solidarity to you and your family. You’re one of the reasons I am proud to be an Arsenal fan.
My condolences to you ‘Holic. Your loss puts into perspective that our love of Arsenal is secondary to our loved ones. Take the time and take care of your family. The blog can wait.
First time post but long time reader of what I consider to be top class blogging.
Condolenses on the holicdad. Hope to have you back blogging soon.
Hopefully, the conversion of the holic nephew will add a new generation to the dynasty.
All the best.
Horrible week off the pitch ‘H, so sorry. See you on the 22nd.
Deepest condolences holic for your loss. Puts everything into perspective. Hope to read you soon.
Condolences ‘holic. From your posts it would seem we are of a similar era where our parents are knocking on a bit. You can never be fully perpared for when that message arrives. Be sure in the knowledge that the ‘holicdad is comfortable and still keeping an eye on the gooners. Twas a good result today.
Best wishes for the New Year. (although this reads a bit trite it is hearfelt.

Pint of the blackstuff pls barman… Raised in honour of a true arsenal man!
My condolences to you and your family.
‘holic,
Please accept my condolences tonight, I think one measure of your life might be the quality of the children you raise – thus I’m sure your Dad was a wonderful bloke.
Hoping your family find strength in the days ahead.
Tim
Hi holics. Got caught up in stuff & didn’t get to watch the game but was pleased to know the team did what was expected of them. Looking forward to Wednesday.
Hello ‘holic, mighty pleased to have you around again. All the best Sir.
Condolences re your father.
Cheers, ‘holic.
All the best, mate.
Deepest sympathies ‘holic – thinking of you and your family. Take care big man.
Really sorry to hear about ‘Holicdad. as an avid follower of this blog, i send my condolences. What a way for the boys to say goodby to him with the 3-gun (sorry 3 – goal) salute!
Arsene Wenger is a true genius. The team he picked versus Wigan really should have taken three points but for two ludicrous penalty decisions (One that wasn’t – theirs; and one that wasn’t given – ours). And today, the team was fresh as a daisy, having been nicely rested. Fresher even than my underpants and absolutely murdered Birmingham. The rest will be good for the Man City game too. The man is a genius.
I take my hat of to the first lord of football.
Wenger’s decision to rest eight players had absolutely no impact on today’s game at Birmingham, Danish, you doughnut. The points at Wigan were squandered by a French megalomaniac frogs legs eater who has no brain cells ande doesn’t listen to sensible protesters like me. Believe me, my contacts at Arsenal tell me so (nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say no more). The quicker we get rid of the moron the better, Growers.
‘Holic – I’m so sorry to hear about your loss.
It has always been a pleasure hearing you recount ‘holicdad Arsenal stories on the blog. My thoughts are with you and your family.
My condolences Holic. Really sorry to hear your sad news.
As for ESPN, I cannot even listen to the commentators (both spuds BTW!)
Couldnt agree more putrid Pedro. Get that french loon out.
Very best to you and your family on the loss of your father. Just wanted to say thanks for the always-interesting and historical perspective to Goonerdom on your blog… and knowing that the ‘Holicdad has inspired you to support The Arsenal and to write this blog, I’d like to thank him as well for inspiring you.
Holic, don’t have a lot to say since in this kind of moment it doesn’t really matter what you say, as long as you’re there for the person, which I am here for you if anything is needed.
Deepest condolences, may his soul rest in peace.
My condolences to you and your family. Thanks for writing such a great blog. We’ll be here for you get back.
RIP
condolences to your and your family holic.
as a long time reader of the blog i feel like I know him a bit.
cheers
Deepest condolences on sad loss of your father Holic. May he rest in peace
And to those posting their anti Wenger bile (Pedro and Plastic) I say, simply:have a little respect…
Hang in there, ‘holic. Your dad will always be with you. And the Arsenal’s best tribute to him would be three points against the moneybags this Wednesday.
First time post but long time reader of your blog.
Wish you and your family my most sincere condolences.
Arsenal and holicdad for ever.
Cheers mate
Deepest sympathies holic. Hoping all is well with you and family.
I saw a bit of the match via the stream. The boys were sharp tonite. RVP very rusty and looking less than healthy and very light weight. Did he play the whole 90.
This team has a lot of potential. If we play every match from now till the end as if they were cup finals we can do it. Djorou has improved a lot. He needs to play every game now.
With this much talent in the team I would be heartbroken if we throw it away now.
Up the Reds!
Sorry to hear about Holicdad, am glad the team gave him a fitting sendoff.
Condolences ‘holic..and to ur family
RIP the ‘Holicdad and strength to you and your family ‘Holic.
I don’t know if it is normal to feel this sad about somebody else’s loss, especially if it is someone you have never met, but there you go, and this is not about me. It’s about you and your family ‘Holic.
I offer you my deepest condolences ‘Holic. There’s nothing more I can add to make it less painful I guess.
I’m really sorry for your loss.
as i expected we’re going to score goals for fun from now.atleast until rvp gets his next injury(hopefully not for a year atleast).
i don’t post much, but wanted to give my condolences. thanks for all the great work you put into the site ‘holic.
My deepest condolences to you and your family holic.
And keep up the good work!
From a Norwegian Gooner.
‘Holic, I don’t often post but I always always read, so I just wanted to pass on my condolences to you and your family at this time.
a win dedicated to ur father holic.as for the commentary.i watch in mute most of the time.they keep repeating the same cliches over and over again.and most of the time its ‘that decision would have gone their way if they’d been playing at home’.why should it?idiots.
Many condolences to yourself & the family from a first time poster. Keep the good memories of your Dad forever
My condolences
‘Holic, so sorry to hear about your dad. May the rest of the year be a happier time for you and may his memory live long.
my sincere and deepest condolences holic to you and your family
my deepest condolences ‘holic.
That performance was light years better than Wigan, but I feel like flu victim following this team right now.
There’s an unmistakable magnificence about your dad, ‘Holic – that’s easy enough for even a casual holic to discern.
Thank you so much all,
I had this grand idea of responding to all individually, but between the various forums, comments, Twitter etc. I just can’t keep up with you all.
I am so so grateful to you all for keeping my mind off the obvious. You are magnificent, but I am not surprised about Arsenal supporters being top, top people.
Cheers,
‘holic.
Many condolences ‘holic.
I hope you can take some comfort from the fact that the holicDad lives on in all our memories thanks to all your writings about him on here.
Condolences on the passing of your father. We’ve all been fortunate to come to know him through your posts. I’m sure I speak for everyone here when I say this is a time for family first and blog second.
sincere condolances Holic. Dark Days for sure, but, in time, you will reflect on only the good times spent with your father.
Sort of puts things into perspective. Peace to you my friend.
Ah, back on at last.
As one of the French commentators put it ‘God put Nasri and Fabregas in this Arsenal team: thank you’.
Cheers, ‘holic, mine will be a treble spirit of your choice.
*raises glass*
My sympathies for your loss.. May your dad’s soul rest in peace..
Thanks for keeping me entertained over the last year holic.Sorry about your loss may he rest in peace.
Hey ‘Holic
Not sure if this will of any comfort in your hour of need but I found that it’s the little, unexpected memories that come back to you every now and again over a longer period that provide the sweetest rememberances of our dear and departed ones.
It’s just shy of two years since my father passed on. From what I can gather we were not nearly as close as you and yours but the great thing is only the good stuff remains now.
Health and propserity to you, your family and all ‘Holics in 2011 and a toast to long life.
‘Holic
Sorry to learn of your loss. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Your posts reveal that you have many warm memories of Holicdad and these memories and his gift of goonerhood will live on.
Warm regards and best wishes for 2011.

i usually read though i comment less so rather familiar with ur tales about ur dad
sorry about his passing one… loss of an arsenal legend indeed!
Tough day for you ‘Holic.
My dad took me to my first Arsenal game when I was eight. It was something of a surprise as he never really showed a particular interest in football, before or after.
I never forgot that fantastic night under the floodlights which was to shape so much of my life thereafter.
I always thank him for that one trip to the Arsenal which has always meant so much.
He never took me again for whatever reason, and died on my birthday 9 years ago.
It’s hard to imagine how you must feel, having had years of supporting the Arsenal together with your dad.
Great sadness is inevitable – I hope you are also able to feel lucky to have had so much to share with him.
All the very best to you, Sir.
sorry to hear about your loss holic.
lets hope some silverware this year will lighten your burden and keep the old man smiling.
all the best
As long as he lives on in your memories (which he no doubt will) then he is not truly gone. He is still there to give you guidance and love.
I raise a glass…
‘Holic. Please accept my deepest sympathies. Thanks for the great blog and all the best to you and your family for the new year.
condolences to you ‘holic, your family and all loved ones. Thanks for the great blog and the generaly great atmosphere in the drinks. hope we win the league!
Dear ‘holic, I offer my deepest condolences for your loss.
My condolences to you and your family ‘holic. See you back at the bar soon.
HOLIC and HOLICS
i would like to propose something. remember when ramsey got injured? and it was ‘do it for aaron.’
well lets make it ‘DO IT FOR HOLICDAD’ instead how about that?
‘holic, my deepest condolences. perspective is so much easier from distance, but for what it’s worth, on reading your news i immediately called my parents and thanked them for all they have done, and continue to do for me. 10,000 miles of geographic distance, notwithstanding. i then toasted them and would like to do the same to you and your father. a round of ardbeg 10 (that’s as much as my pocket will stand) for the house. a special spirit for a special occasion.
Religiously read your blog holic, all the way from Kampala. Deepest sympathies over your loss and i trust your fortitude and some of the stuff that gladdens the soul will see you through.
My condolences, ‘holic. Let’s hope we win the league for your father.
Thinking of you at this sad time Dad, luv ya.
In addition to my own personal message, many condolences from everyone at JFSR, you’ve been missed.
Condolences to you and your family ‘Holic. Lets’s win the league for your dad. Gooners4life!!!
Many condolences for the loss of your dad, ‘holic.
I’m sure he was a gent, and must have been proud of his son.
All the very best New Year wishes to you and yours.
My deepest condolences.
Sorry for the loss of your father, ‘holic. I love all your posts, but those when football and family merge are always the special ones.
I’m sure your old man will be reading Goonerholic blog up in heaven – I wonder if their internet server ever crashes?
