The New Kit. Thumbs Up Or Not?

May 12th, 2011 by 'holic

Thursday night. Quiet news week. How quiet? Six of the top seven stories on NewsNow are just pure transfer speculation, and the season isn’t even over yet. You can’t blame anyone for doing that when the only other Arsenal story of note concerns Merse forgetting the yellow liquid he was injected with back in the day was extra-strength lager.

Otherwise the last week has been notable only for a bad defeat and the inevitable fall-out, all of which has tended to overshadow the earlier-than-usual unveiling of the new kit. Of course we had seen it before, and it is fair to say it was sparking mixed reviews, mainly because of the 125th anniversary emblem. I like the fact the white sleeves have been retained. I’m not sure about the red collar. Take a closer look and listen to some familiar faces talking about it.

So, let me know in the drinks what your verdict is. For what it’s worth I am already in for the training polo (see below), and of course if you are thinking of ordering any of the new kit it would be much appreciated if you could do so via the banners on this site. Having offered up the usual shameless grovelling I should also say thanks in advance for those that have supported the blog in this way over the last year. It isn’t the massive money-spinner some would have you believe, but it has covered the cost of webhosting this year, and also ensures the club get the sale, not the owner of Newcastle United.

That’s it from me for now. I’m off to inject myself with some black liquid. I’ll be back with a Villa preview on Saturday, ‘holics.

    Evening all.

I would prefer it if the training top was the new 1st team kit. White collar, white sleeves – perfect. Not sure about the garland thing with leaves, I know it’s significance, but for me, it’s too much for the kit.

A pint of your finest Guinness please sir!

The one in the pic looks pretty good, Holic – I think I’ll give it a punt and wear it when Zico buys me the very long awaited refreshment(s) in the Diggers.

Hello Jersey, great polo, isn’t it…

BtM, I trust your birthday celebrations were enjoyable?

  4. on 12 May 2011 at 9:42 pm4dave

Another rip off by the club.Any excuse to change the kit.The kit should be for at least 2 years not these bloody one offs. And Arsenals away colours are yellow and blue nothing else

  5. on 12 May 2011 at 9:47 pm5Matt

It’ll look lovely when we win the title with it next season πŸ˜‰

I don’t mind the emblem but I’m not too fond of the red stripes on the sleeves and short.

@dave: where have you been in the last few decades? Every club does it.

  6. on 12 May 2011 at 9:56 pm6Chippy

Haven’t brought a shirt since zig zag bananna oh how I loved that number and many of the players that wore it πŸ™‚ With you the training tops the nuts and should gave been the new home kit but hey ho!!

  7. on 12 May 2011 at 9:58 pm7Pete

The emblem looks too big in my opinion. I’ll be waiting to see other gooners in it before getting one myself.

  8. on 12 May 2011 at 10:05 pm8buck

i am going look great in that new kit

  9. on 12 May 2011 at 10:06 pm9kevnal

Prefer the goalie jersey but might hold off until after summer transfer window has closed as i have no idea who is gonna be between the sticks!! Does anyone?

  10. on 12 May 2011 at 10:23 pm10Sam

You can see the away kit in the background at 58 seconds, hanging on the goal behind Wilshere… I like both kits althogh taking the colour out of the crest is a bit cheap skate!

  11. on 12 May 2011 at 10:24 pm11rockofgilberto

I’m with Jersey on this, the training top is more like it for me. I’m not planning on buying the new kit though, not that it’s hideous. But it is another one-off, and the crest is a bit too much. All this elaboration does is make me nostalgic for the days when we had a proper crest and still recognized the motto Victoria Concordia Crescit. “Forward” is nice and all, and I’m aware of its significance as the first motto, but I think a return to the more recent past and those successes might be a bit more warranted.

Pint of the black stuff, if you please. It’s been a looooong day.

look on the video at 0:59 its our away kit

  13. on 12 May 2011 at 10:50 pm13behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Holic, I watched that video without sound but the video part tells us only one thing: Included in our starting XI next season will be Song, SZCZ, Walcott, and Pat Rice.

  14. on 12 May 2011 at 10:51 pm14muppet

    Pure robbery!
Last jersey lasted 1 year, this will last 1 year ‘cos creast will change back so old one. So “new” one next year. Just robbery!
All for a team and manager that won’t invest in quality. Won’t be getting any of my money

  15. on 12 May 2011 at 11:23 pm15kjhvscd

PAUSE THE VID AT 0:58 SECONDS… It’s our new away kit!

  16. on 12 May 2011 at 11:23 pm16gooner92

pause at 0:59 and you can see the NEW AWAY KIT! blue and navy

  17. on 12 May 2011 at 11:26 pm17kjhvscd

I thought we had red socks? The first few pics published showed em red?

  18. on 12 May 2011 at 11:26 pm18Le Bob

    Whatever’s on tap please, ‘holc!

Love the Polo, and I will buy one for myself. Think the kit’s fine, too. It’s red, with white sleeves. Don’t quite see that the crest is something to be upset about, either. It’s a mix of the new one and one of the first (the very first?) club emblems Arsenal had.

  19. on 12 May 2011 at 11:28 pm19takeabowson

Not a buyer of kits as in this age of tight-fit stretch the female population go all dreamy when i venture out in lycra so tend to wear my trusty 70-71 shirt when the occasion so demands .

Am sorry that this year’s kit only got one year as i felt it was the best we’ve had for many a year , especially given that that charlton athletic number which immediately preceded it got two years and simply didnt cut the mustard as an arsenal kit .

On the plus side we’ve retained the white sleeves which is an absolute must for an arsenal shirt . On the downside the badge , so my fashion expert here tells me , is too busy , and as someone who likes the new badge ( i know i’m in the minority ) , the decolourisation ( is that a word ? ) does it no favours .

Would concur that the training top is better .

The away kit is a dogs dinner , but hey we’ve had a few of those over the years .

Why the club chooses not to consult its fanbase over these matters i have no idea . Surely if the most popular design was chosen by fans , this would help rather than hinder profits and , in an age where the dislocation between the club and fanbase has never been greater , make supporters feel , if only in a very small way , part of the decision making process .

  20. on 12 May 2011 at 11:29 pm20Sean Airlocked

The new kit is alright, nothing to great but the training kit is f*****g awesome!!!

Whoever chose the kits have dropped the ball on this one…there would have been a lot of happy peops should they have chosen the training top for games and gave the home kit a retro feel πŸ™

  21. on 12 May 2011 at 11:39 pm21Goonerholic

    TaBS,

So good to see you back. Keep the faith.

  22. on 12 May 2011 at 11:46 pm22s j little

Shirts and shorts and stocking used to spell glamour nowadays they.ve become goady, glittery, loaded with horrible chevrons, dots, stripes, and horrible adverts.
Who wants to see teams in black or grey?
Why is Arsenals goalkeeper kit so awful?
And whoever thought that all one clour like Leeds,Liverpool and Chelsea wear added anything to
    the spectacle.
The simplier the teams kit the easier on the eye the more enjoyable to observe.
But these days no seems to work anything out just look at the awful gaudy programmes!
They no longer help one as to the team set up. You can,t write on that awful glossy paper. The statistics are too small to read. Stupid whizzkids think it makes sense to print yellow lettering on orange backgrounds. AnD they charge Three Euros for the gaudy thing. Its full of stuff that has nothing to do with football like Birthdays etc, and if I want “LaDIES” football I can go to their games and get their programme! Whoops, I nearly got mixed with the other team!

  23. on 12 May 2011 at 11:47 pm23takeabowson

hey nas at 13 – i wouldn’t rule out the possibility – clichy stalling on his contract and at best unconvincing so could slot Ricey in at left back . Might be a tad arthritic though , so i would prefer to see a recall from the hospitality suite for the legendary Sammy Nelson – opposition limbs strewn all over the pitch , the odd thunderbolt from 30 yards , and for the female goonerdom lots of arse baring . You heard it here first … i wonder if the copious transfer sites will run with this one ?

  24. on 12 May 2011 at 11:49 pm24takeabowson

hey Holic glad to be back – a small matter of a BT dispute but hey ho

  25. on 12 May 2011 at 11:54 pm25Goonerholic

    Haha,

I was behind Sammy that night against Coventry when he mooned. Scarred for life I was πŸ˜‰

  26. on 12 May 2011 at 11:55 pm26behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Tabs, Speaking of arse baring, why do we need a kit at all? Better to paint it on if you ask me since it prevents shirt grabbing when breaking behind the other team’s defence. Theo without kit would be particularly efffective in my opinion. πŸ™‚

  27. on 12 May 2011 at 11:57 pm27takeabowson

me too – a very scary man from all angles !
do you remember the uproar afterwards – there was talk of him being banned from the cup final because of it .

  28. on 13 May 2011 at 12:02 am28Goonerholic

    Indeed. Thank God he wasn’t.

  29. on 13 May 2011 at 12:04 am29takeabowson

Nas ha ha – the downside of your suggestion would be that the likes of Shawcross would always find something to grab , which I’m guessing would disadvantage some more than others ! – lets just say i dont think PV4 would turn out in your suggested kit !

  30. on 13 May 2011 at 12:35 am30Trev

It’s another vote for the training top here – should have been the new home kit if we had to have one. I liked this season’s home kit, with white, and only white sleeves. What are those silly thin red stripes for on the new sleeves?
Do Nike’s sewing machines all have sneaky red bobbins that just can’t leave our nice WHITE sleeves alone.

If I buy I will do it here, but it is unlikely with Β£1,955 to fork out for the new ticket.

  31. on 13 May 2011 at 12:58 am31Fletch

The Emirates logo will be a little bigger that’s for sure. Like 10 times bigger than shown

  32. on 13 May 2011 at 1:03 am32behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Tabs, I’d take PV4 in a mud wrestling match over Shawcross every time!

  33. on 13 May 2011 at 1:06 am33Lonestar Gooner

    ‘Holics,

I will gladly purchase this new kit because I KNOW that the profits from such chicanery will go into buying the players we need next… no, wait.

A dram of scotch, please guv’

  34. on 13 May 2011 at 3:14 am34behind the 8 ball but not nasri

Either that, Lonestar, or into replacing the drab wood stain behind the pictured jersey. I think what we need is a new interior decorator with blazing speed and the ability to beat anybody in the league to balls in the air. Dram of scotch would be most pleasant.

  35. on 13 May 2011 at 5:22 am35zicoinexile

Me in the training top…..and the blonde girl from Sainsbury’s – I can see it now.

BTM @ 2 – sounds good – you can get to me via ‘Holic – just let me know when you’ve set the dials on your Tardis πŸ˜‰

  36. on 13 May 2011 at 6:49 am36Dirty turkey

For anyone buying the new kit I strongly recommend not having 4 – Fabregas printed in it or it’ll be even more if a rip off! The 4 day kit!

  37. on 13 May 2011 at 7:38 am37ak47

i prefer the training kit also. would i if they made it our first kit 4 2012-2013? doubt it….why. well theyd enlarge the ems logo wouldnt they.
like the fit of the 1st kit. very contempz.

what i found interesting about that video was the comments about the fans. chezza specifically singled out the away support. forcing us to read between the lines… in a nutshell they all know the home suppport is shit.

irony is…. its down to the club management. maybe its a silent protest from the players asking the board to make home games more accessible to the real fans?

  38. on 13 May 2011 at 9:12 am38VanMoulds

    Morning,
i’m a fan of the site (none of the negative dribble that you get from Le Grove) so when i get round to buying my new top!

have to agree with a few others though i absolutely love the training kit, wish that was the new shirt.

  39. on 13 May 2011 at 9:54 am39Camberwell Gooner

Not wanting to piss against the wind but I like both the new tops, simple, bold, back to basics red n white. Don’t mind the new crest either, especially the old-school white cannon. For what it’s worth.

Cappuccino for me please ‘Holic, I’m only 55 minutes into the working day.

  40. on 13 May 2011 at 9:55 am40Camberwell Gooner

  41. on 13 May 2011 at 9:58 am41Scribe

@VanMouls, uhh Le Grove is the most depressingly deluded house of whiners i’ve ever come across. The comments are worse, idiots agreeing with idiots.

Anyway n’other pint of leffe please.

I can’t help but feel the away kits taking the p****, no one can deny are obsession with small players has gone to far when we start dressing them up as jockeys.

I’ve warmed to the new badge though, new home kits good, but would have like to have seen the white collar retained.

  42. on 13 May 2011 at 10:02 am42Dave

Arsenal shouldnt change their kit every year.

  43. on 13 May 2011 at 10:34 am43Snir Geuli

My God, the away kit is horrible.

  44. on 13 May 2011 at 10:34 am44dodo

at .59 seconds you can see the new 2nd kit handing up in the back ground dark\light blue

  45. on 13 May 2011 at 10:45 am45Jersey

I really don’t understand why the club have to dick about with blue or white kits. Even the incorrect shades of yellow and blue for the away kit. I think the last correct mix for the away kit was 2005, the one with the collar (Bobby scoring that cracker at Anfield).

Bollox to it being a fashion accessory, it’s a football kit, we are Arsenal and that means red/white for home shirts and yellow/blue for away.

The fashion accessories can be from the polo shirts, tees etc.

    Rant over.

It’s not too early for a Guinness is it?

    CoYRRR’s

  46. on 13 May 2011 at 10:54 am46Goonertown

Everything which can be said about it has been said above.

In conclusion I like shirt overall.

I am slightly irritated by the crest and the red stripe. It doesn’t look that much different from last season’s shirt either, which I thought we’d have for another year when I purchased it.

I like the Polo and will take a closer look at the other bits available.

  47. on 13 May 2011 at 11:46 am47Lonestar Gooner

    G’mornin’ all,

Jersey, my man, it’s never too early for Guinness. It is, however, too early to board a flight to go talk to politicians.

Thanks, ‘Holic for providing a welcome distraction. Man, I will miss the bar once the season’s over.

    Up the Arse.

  48. on 13 May 2011 at 2:10 pm48rosicknote

Agree, training kit is way better. Will buy the training kit instead!

  49. on 13 May 2011 at 4:06 pm49The Goonies

Thumbs down — these are for players and kids, not adults. Stop buying the players’ kits unless it’s Halloween or your missus is a kinky Gooner. Nike will be less inclined to mess with it every damn season, even if it’s just the collar and crest this time (which I too have minor issues with, holic).

  50. on 13 May 2011 at 4:16 pm50Stone Roses

Didn’t like the shirt with the red sleeve, didn’t like this years shirt and dont like next years either. But I do like the training polo, so have ordered that.

Because next years shirt has 125 on it, I guess that means they will change it yet again for the following season. That is hard if you have boys who ‘have’ to have the current shirt. Are we in a mode now where we change the shirt every year?

  51. on 13 May 2011 at 5:00 pm51Holloway2Holland

I like this seasons strip, it’s the first real Arsenal looking kit we’ve had in years and as far as I can tell, popular with the fans, why change it? Rhetorical question, ofcourse, cos we all know it’s about the cash, gee I feel sorry for mums and dads who have to splash out every year on new kits for the kids, it’s nothing short of daylight robbery and abuse of the fans if you ask me.

I’d of prefered if they had kept the white collar and I can’t stop thinking that the emblem makes it look like a bogus Fred Perry number, although admitedly the more I see it the less it bothers me.
Not that it makes much difference to me as I’m not a purchaser of football shirts, haven’t been for years. That said, I must agree with ‘holic, the polo shirt looks pretty nifty and if it wasn’t for the dodgy crest I’d snap one of those up sharpish.

    In other news, I see Pubis has been at it again;

Nice link H2H , article made me laugh but the sanctimonious drivel in the comments section that followed presumably by the Stoke Massive was even more hilarious .

The thought that Tony Penis will be gracing wembley tomorrow , looking like a refugee from a Lourdes pilgrimage , makes me sick to the stomach .

Never trust a man over the age of 17 wearing a baseball cap – he is beyond ridicule .

    Injecting black liquid you say?

I’ll have a bottle of bud lime light please.

    NOT

  54. on 13 May 2011 at 7:51 pm54buggleskelly

The new kit? Yes it’s OK, but you’re right about the red collar. It should of course be white – (as may all your Christmasses be…)

The problem is the truly awful badge. Never mind the laurel leaves and all that. Ever since we lost the proper heraldic crest complete with Latin motto, I have refused point blank to purchase any club merchandise. The current abomination looks like something off a bottle of ketchup. Dein, Edelman and company ought to be truly ashamed of themselves for foisting on the rest of us something obviously designed by an educationally sub-normal five-year-old.

I’m still not over the fact that the last 2 weekends of the season are close to being meaningless. I knew winning it was a tall order but thought it would come down to the final weekend.

New shirt….it’s alright…..polo is very nice. I like the fact that Szczesny is about 18 months away from sounding like he grew up in Muswell Hill….

‘holic, I must apologize to the traditionalists among us but while fashion is the issue my 7 year old daughter is tie-dying her shirt and little does she suspect that once it is done I will be proposing it for Arsenal’s 2013-2014 away shirt. This to accompany our new motto: Psychedelia Concordia Crescit.

  60. on 14 May 2011 at 1:45 pm60Lars

Sajit: that video isn’t the only promotion material. There are other pictures of the new shirt with Fabregas in them.

I am watching Blackpool-Bolton right now, it’s an absolutely brilliant game to watch. I really do hope Blackpool somehow manages to stay up, they are 3-2 up at half time but it could have just as well have been 5-4 or something.

‘Holic: can’t find anything of the sorts on my iTunes πŸ™
