Overheard At Members Day, And It’s Udinese
Aug 5th, 2011 by 'holic
It has been a week in which good humour has been in short supply, and in which I have been very fortunate to have been sent some picture exclusives. On Tuesday I woke up to find the excellent shots of the Thierry Henry free-kick from Sunday from BtM. This morning it was the turn of Daryl Booth to send me the pick of his snaps from yesterday’s Members Day at the Grove.
So close he was to Arsene and Cesc he was able to eavesdrop on their conversation as they saluted the crowd. I suppose we will let him have his passport back on 1st September?
I obviously owe Daryl a huge thanks for the snap, and if you want to see more of his work (you are over eighteen, aren’t you?) then follow all of his latest adventures via Twitter.
So it’s Udinese
The real news of the day was the draw for the final qualifying round of the European Champions League. We avoided the loaded gun that was Rubin Kazan, but Udinese might have been the next side we would have wanted to avoid. Having said that we do have the chance to build a lead in the home leg, first up a week next Tuesday.
My first stop having heard the draw was the excellent Swiss Ramble, and I found his typically well-researched piece on our opponents. Since that was written they have lost the services of Sanchez and Inler, and the Italian League season starts later than ours, so the game at the Grove will be their first serious outing of the campaign. Hopefully we will catch them cold.
What with suspensions and potential departures we may be far from having a settled side going into the games. Hopefully that thought will focus a few minds in the coming week.
Have a great weekend, ‘holics.

No Gibbs or Kos on plane to Lisbon.
Cesc, Nasri issues aside I’d have loved for our back 4 to get a game together.
The back 4 that would open the season, and I’m guessing Traore and Squillaci/Djourou are not part of the 4.
Heh. Nice one sir.
I`ll see you for a pint in a couple of weeks. A nice cold beer.
π
Best Photoshop Ever!! In hysterics here mate.
Has the back four only played 45mins together? Why no Koscielny?
lol @ the photosgop.
Nice!
Heh, epic picture! Love it!!
Excellent.
Holiday has now started. No patients for 2weeks… which means that the serious drinking can start.. I’ll have a mojito, please barman.
Would be nice to have everyone fit. Still, worst pre-season preparation for years, maybe it’ll produce unexpected but welcome results! π
HT seat 3610. Between the Noah carriage and The Armoury.
HervΓ© Fabrechaize… excellent >8)
Adios Cesc – resigned to this, but wisj it was over and done with.
Flog Nasri.
Long live the Axis of Bum Fluff; Rambo and Little Jack. #move on#
“wisj”?? Mojitos beginning to work.
And, perhaps, adios Carlos. Thanks for all the chips.
Heh, great work, ‘holic.
Still laffin’
Just hope we are ready for this CL qualifier.
I’m sorry I don’t trust any combination of our back four against Udinese, even without Sanchez and Inler.
And when I say great work ‘holic, I’m guessing I mean ‘great work Daryl’
My idea, Daryl’s skillz, Ollie.
The brothers who run the San Danielle in Highbury Park, and where AW and others have often been spotted post match, are Udinese supporters.
Sagna djourou vermaelen traore
my first choice back 4 anyway
“Koscielny and Nasri might be back for the start of the season. I don’t think Fabregas will be ready to start the season because he has been out for a long time and has had no games. Walcott might be back and, as for Wilshere, it is very difficult to say”
For the love of all that’s holy, things look utterly off track for the hardest seasons start Wenger has ever had.
ER, good point ‘holic, don’t know why I went back to that one.
So for the benefit of comedy lovers, I shall re-post:

It’s always better as a team work indeed, ‘holic.
Looking forward to more collaborative works from you both then!
Great comedic picture ‘holic. Good stuff. We’ve had that picture in our mind’s eye all preseason and even made silly poems about it to.
Thanks for the heads up about a new post too as I didn’t anticipate a new posting tonight due to you, and everyone else, being out on the town wetting their whistles π
Very funny.
And Lester’s “Teen Age Midget Masterplan” almost made real. Except he isn’t a teenager.
Where is And Lester anyway?
its now taking decidely longer to type these posts on my smartarse phone….and the noise in this boozer is deafinininiinnng.
Is it time to start worrying yet? surely this summer carnt be as bad as previous I’m Royally fucked off with the bollocks the club are spouting daily we’ve less than a week to lift the blues and still the same shit gets spouted WTF is happening?
Me Bad a round of drinks on me and 50p in the jukebox – Chosen song Panic on the streets of London it seems apt π
‘holic, Hilarious photo!
Chippy, WTF is the order of the summer, other than BTA, which has provided me with the only plausible explanation for all the dithering the club management have been doing throughout June and July.
Every reason to lose faith in this incompetent mob running the club-they really are taking the piss. Increasingly hope for the best without nothing more than faith to base it on-but fear the worst.
Udinese will be tricky, but I expect us to go through. The Serie A champions last year couldn’t even score in 180 minutes against the Spuds. If we can take 5 points at least from this month and qualification for the next stage in Europe I’ll be happy.
Far too much doom and gloom of late, I know why people are frustrated but I suspect a lot of supporters of other teams would love to have our problems. New season, plenty to play for.
great squad selection…and im very pleased to see that all our young players are given a chance…i hope we will be able to sell cesc and nasri just seconds away from transfer deadline so that we dont hacve to put up with all tha Gooners who have misunderstood what The Arsenal is all about..
and im very pleased with gazidis work he has single hended saved us from a lot of cash…me personally im just a bot upset we didnt hire him earlier..think of all the money we could have saved..
we should be able to do some great business this summer…so far we havent earned as much as we could yet…but sell cesc and nasri i think the board will be pleased and also get some pocket money..
we have strengthen enough…jenkinson at right back..great sagna was always the weak link in our defence…
its time we the Gooners stood firm and backed the team and understood the ambition of The Arsenal..making money..
in my eyes big clubs all over the world are shinking in their pants right now..oh oh we’re such a big big club
What makes it worse is today we’ve been treated to the Super Quality line which leads to the we couldn’t find anything better than we have one !! When Yogi and Arseblog are fucked off you know things ain’t pretty π
Wish I shared your faith Charlie, The sides shot of confidence finished last season in relegation form and two first teamers one being are best player by far and captain won’t out couldn’t think of a much worse way to start a season, The club needed lifting after last years debacle and that comes by introducing fresh blood which injects hope we’ve been injected with horse tranquilizer,
Have a refund on the jukebox money Chippy…
Tuneeeeeeeeeeeeeee !! Not sure it helps the mood mind π Wheres Catalan and the Herbals that will left the spirits π
Have you Heard of anything that may lift the fanbase Guv?
I loved the response of Udinese’s sporting director. He made out like their season was over after getting their worst possible draw.
Let’s face it – if we can’t beat them over two legs, how are we going to keep top 4?
Savage mate…c’mon we’re The Arsenal who cares about winning eh ? we’re in it to make money and this could be our best season yet…trust in wenger and gazidis and if you dont ..well just listen to hilly woody he knows…
Chippy.
The GT is open for your delectation. If you need anything stronger, just let me know, and I’ll see if there’s anything left over after my self-medication
And if by magic the Herb appeared π Hope alls well CG will have to catch up another time I’ve gotta go catch u soon,
Careful Tomstoned and Chippy or you’ll have the holic on here telling you that we should wait til the end of the season before condemning anyone….
You know I’m playing holic, right? Well kind of….
hear hear North Bank 1 mate..
same procedure as last year then jame oooppss North Bank 1 ;
As long as you are respectful NB, there is no problem.
You may also care to reflect on the fact I have repeatedly said the time to judge is 1st September, not the end of the season.
Just for the record…
Lonestar – If you promise not to bring up Obama again I promise not to remind you that he’s the worst President since Jimmy Carter π
Now, pass me the peanuts please and remember, “The rent is too damn high!” π
SV, I don’t see any post above by Lonestar. Didn’t we both promise to keep politics out of it? π
Stingy, May I recommend Pomelo Sauvignon Blanc. It will get your feeble little mind off politics fast. π
James??? Unfortunately I am not James.
That said I was at odds with the view that we should keep schtum about our players frustrations til the end of the season (even though a very admiral standpoint from the holic).
I hope I am proven wrong about this season and the squad but I really believe what we have seen over the past three seasons from board and manager alike have been nothing short of disgraceful. Not in terms of football (well the defending yes, but general play no) but the attitude.
Maybe we should be grateful. Maybe we should look down the seven sisters road and see how better off we are. Maybe. No.
I mentioned Dein the other day (senior not junior) being absent at the same length the trophies have been missing and was told by holic that the Β£75m he made from the sale to Usmanov somehow means he should no longer be allowed near our club. Why?
Was he not instrumental in the modern success of the club even hiring an unknown AW from Japan.
Had he not negotiated the signing of Bergy, Wright, Henry, Vieira, Freddie, Campbell, Pires etc etc etc?
As the clubs success grew was it wrong that the price of his stock went up? Is that any different to people (myself included) that bought bonds when the North Bank was built and am still sitting on a tidy profit were I to sell?
And finally when he sold his shares, yes for a profit (shock horror), did he not do so because there had been a dispute about bringing a foreigner onto the board that had the spending power to take the club forward? A one Stan Kroenke. Where have I heard that mans name before? Hmmm. He believed that without this investment we would fall behind Chelsea and Man Utd. Was he wrong?
Have we won anything since?
Would bringing him back on board be a magic wand and all be perfect again. Probably not but we cannot deny the positive impact he had on the club and our recent success.
You defended Pat Rice at the end of last season when people were calling for his head. And you were right that Pat deserved more respect than he was getting.
Whilst I do admire your style of writing holic and your attitude towards the club and how it should be supported, on the topic of David Dein I think you are wrong.
However lets hope the boys have it in them to pull it off this season. Otherwise channel 5 is a depressing thought for a Thursday night!
And I do hope that come Sept. 1st that we can have some serious dialogue about where the blame should go. Too often I have heard too many ‘holics say, “Well, let’s wait until the season is over”, which becomes, “Well, let’s wait until the transfer window is over” before passing judgement. When Sept. 1st eventually does come, I wonder what the excuse will be to defer the opinions of some fine gentlemen this time? At some point, the chickens have to come home to roost.
My magnum is cocked and loaded and I’m already feeling a little dirty, okay Harry π
Great picture π
Catalan – lucky man. Just finished my break. Enjoy yours.
‘Holic – was hoping for some serious action this week on the ‘list of deals’.
While trying not to get sucked into the doom, it is beginning to feel a bit like the club announced a busy summer ahead and a change of direction, nice and early, and once season tickets were renewed or purchased, all decisions and actions ceased.
I predicted our problem would be offloading most of the highly paid unwanted players in order to make room in the squad, and that seems to have been the case.
The club also announced that significant funds were available for transfers, and that did not appear to be dependant on money being received for Fab or Nasri.
No answer expected on the above, ‘cos I know you gave it several times a few evenings ago.
The point really, is that while the club say and apparantly do nothing, supporters are clearly growing anxious, not to say extremely pissed off.
The first chance for the unrest to explode will, unfortunately, be a crucial CL Qualifier. Heaven help us if we concede an early goal.
There will bo NO booing from me, and NO abuse from me, and neither has there ever been. But we are entitled to expect better than this.
We have a really tough start to the season, just in case anyone hadn’t noticed π and with injuries, suspensions and unsettled players, a squad in what could be described as disarray.
*expects imminent bollocking from BtM*
I don’t think waiting til 1st of September is any good to us given that during that period we could conceivably be out of the champs lge, and not got great results against manure and liverpool.
We needed the reinforcements/ new signings at the beginning of the summer not the end of the transfer window.
I do not see how gambling, cos thats what it is, with the fragile nature of the club can be allowed by either club or manager. The fans are unhappy with the lack of investment in the squad and the price hikes.
Gazidis and Wenger both set their stall out at the beginning of summer and they haven’t delivered. Even you holic have asked them to come good on their promises.
No height added. Experienced defender lost, not replaced – yet. Only one piece of dead wood (harsh but fair) moved on. All too depressingly familiar. But still words of team spirit and togetherness.
I’m praying for a bout of swine flu in northern Italy from next week. That’s not good karma is it? Fuck it.
Barman still water with slice of lemon please….
SV – my smugness meter is registering very high levels reading your post. The ‘told you so’ attitude is never a good one.
Nas,
It was my fault this time…from last drinks. I apologized immediately. No more politics (I shall fight no more forever). π³
*places penalty / drinking money on bar*
8ball – LG brought it up unsolicited near the end of the last post (if you didn’t notice). While I appreciate your recommendation concerning alcohol I take exception with your use of “feeble mind”. People who disagree with another’s viewpoint, on whatever the topic, shouldn’t be easily discounted as feeble. To do so, I would submit to you, is feeble π
Now drink up and enjoy π
I can say two things will be certain by September 1st:
There will be 35 league games left
We will be in four competitions
Everything else is an ‘if’, and should be treated as such.
Make that tap water with ice and a slice of lemon. I’m on the wagon and this time I’m not falling off!!
Saw this earlier, made me laugh:
http://picpaste.com/1983-1uoYtVkh.jpg
Some literal translation I’m sensing. I’m not saying the club should wait until 1st September to act, but saying we cannot judge what they have done until then. I have warned all summer that we simply do not have the negotiators to pull off all of the deals that were being put out there by sources at the club. That becomes even more certain with only weeks to go.
NB, I thank you for debating, making your points, and not descending into vitriol. Really appreciate it. I cannot however accept that Dein, having attempted to derail the Emirates move for his own ambitions at the FA, having attempted to secure the sale of the shares of Lady Nina behind the back of his fellow board members, would have been pulling off the deals you think he would in the years from 2005 to 2010 when we were expected to turn a profit on the transfer account.
He is now a busted flush, run out of the FA, and a part of the failed World Cup bid. Now his son, on the back of the privileged access he had to the club, is working against the interests of the club too. Call that an unfair accusation and I will say I understand. But father introduced son to the key people, and son is now using that for his own benefit.
No, we won’t ever agree on that man, other than the fact that he was a positive force in attracting Wenger to the club and assisting him in those early years. For that, thanks, but no more.
Charlie – I’m just very frustrated at the moment, not smug. As Trev said so eloquently above, the supporters of this fine big club deserve better than this. Full stop. Mgmt has not done (yet) what was promised to the supporters. Where I come from, actions speak louder than words. So far, mgmt has done next to Butkus. π‘
Charlie @50 – Might I point out that by Sept 1st we could be out of the UCL (a big hit to our coffers btw) and in the UEL group stages instead and could possibly drop a full six points to two of our biggest challengers for the league title.
Mgmt knew the schedule and its difficulty well in advance. Mgmt also knew our deficiencies well in advance and said we would strengthen.
As Ricky said to Lucy, mgmt will soon be in a position where, “You got a lot of ‘splaining to do!”
I’m gonna need a real drink soon …
Furry muff….let’s agree to disagree then.
As I said, I hope to be eating humble pie come May!
SV @49 Apologies and cheers. π
Long time reader (2006), first time poster.
The discussion between the landlord and NB1 is why I come here before anywhere else. Having moved to NYC from Islington a few years back, I can tell you that polite, intelligent discourse is dead in the USA. The Arsenal community seem to be going the same way.
I’m as much of a passionate Gooner as any of you, I bleed red and white, but fuck me there seems to be something badly wrong with our lot at the moment.
As it happens my views are in agreement with NB – but thanks to the barman and his regulars for providing an asylum away from the lunatics. We won’t let em take over!
Funny isn’t it, the abiding memory of my early trips to Highbury are buying a ticket on match day at the portakabin by the North Bank and watching Hillier, McGoldrick and the gang against QPR with 21,999 others. And the doomers think they have it so bad.
Good night from New York City, if my first order could be a Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA please barman!
Keep up the good work!
Cheers
New York Gooner, You are a breath of fresh air and I bow to your good sense. Keep on posting and we’ll be the richer for it. π
8ball – apologies accepted. Thank you for the white wine recommendation and let me know the next time you buy some separatist lager π *burp*
Thank-you sir at 59! A kind welcome from a regular such as yourself is as appreciated as it would be in any establishment the world over.
God bless The Arsenal, Great Britain, the United States of America, beautiful women and great beer. We can discuss the order another time.
Cheers!
Welcome NewYorkGooner – pull up a chair, I believe it’s the done thing to offer you one on Lars’ tab, and seeing he isn’t here . . . π
New York Gooner,
Welcome aboard. We Yanks do have a bastion of civil discourse and learned discussion remaining – it’s called the Diane Rehm Show. http://thedianerehmshow.org/
‘Holic, I hope you don’t mind the link. It isn’t football related, but it is the BEST location for discussions of the arts, current events, and – politics. I just wanted the bar to know that civil isn’t dead in the US of A, at least not yet. π
By the by, what’s your leaning regarding fantasy football this year, ‘Holic?
Up the Arse!!
*should read “civility isn’t dead”*
Gentlemen, thank-you so much.
I was taught never to discuss politics or religion in polite company, but seeing as The Arsenal clearly fall into both categories an exception must be made!
And thank-you especially #62 Trev. Although I was brought up to behave well, I ain’t ashamed to drink on a man’s tab whilst he’s sleeping!
Cheers!
Another welcome to you there NYG. Cheers. Keep coming out.
So Cesc isn’t fit enough for a friendly. Hmmmmmm. Isn’t that the perfect time to gain some match fitness — in the last friendly? And since he hasn’t played in a friendly, he won’t play in the EPL opener. Then, if he hasn’t been transferred by that time, there’s no hope in hell that he’ll agree to play in either of our UCL ties before the window ends — he doesn’t want to get cup tied until he knows his future for certain. His first game will be Liverphool. Unless, of course, he remains mysteriously injured until the transfer window is closed Sept. 1st. Has he already played his last game in the red and white? Will he conduct a playing boycott until Sept. 1st via this dodgy hammy injury? If he stays this year, I say he definitely doesn’t play either Udinese match for sure and likely won’t play an EPL match before Sept. 1st.
I, for one, am not amused π
I agree SV. At the VERY least, we should cup-tie him.
Arsenal management are allowing themselves and the team to be played for pussies – and for what?
For the affections of a “captain,” still under contract, who offered to put up his own cash to be rid of us. He should be playing in this friendly, and he should be made to play on day one.
I’m REALLY tired of this shit. I still can’t understand why more folks aren’t ready to call a spade a spade, and take this ingrate to task.
*fuming*
I mean, he wants to go home and play for BitchARCA. I get that.
But guess what? I would REALLY want to go home tonight and find Megan Fox/Jessica Alba/Blake Lively/Olivia Munn etc waiting for me in my bed.
Instead, I will go home to Mrs. Lonestar (who fantasizes over Arsenal beefcake) and my llamas. It’s called reality. It’s called a contract.
Hullo, Cesc… π‘
Very mature of you, LG. I’m sure Mrs. Lonestar appreciates it when she’s not drooling over images of Denilson, Henry, etc. etc. π
Nas, if nothing else, I am mature… π
LG – only one problem with us trying to cup tie him — you can’t cup tie someone who refuses to play because he’s ‘injured’. And from FCB’s point of view, if he is cup tied, they will offer less for him (it gives them an excuse; and to be fair, it does lower his value after he is cup tied).
To cut to the chase:
Sexy Cesc’s contract is with us,
But his heart is in Bar-ce-lo-na!
These three years has got to be the longest transfer saga ever. It is to my memory. Does anyone know of one anywhere that went on any longer???
Snir – Thiago was named to Spain’s NT for the friendly v Italy. Not bad for a 20 yr old that was on FCB B last year π Eight of the 22 players named are from FCB (not including the injured sheep dog Puyol and possible future player Cesc).
zico – I just saw a Bartley interview on Sky. It seems Bartley had offers for loans to other EPL clubs but AW left it to KB to choose where to go and KB made a promise to McCoist to return to the Strangers if he was to be loaned out.
Manc derby over the weekend at Wembley — could get ugly (think of Twitchy whilst constipated π ). The police are already voicing their concerns for order over the tele.
first of all holic and Daryl very funny pic, sorry holic agree with NB1 on the Dein thing i tend to think AW is bigger than the club now,my only hope is the Cesc & Nasri soap opera has not effected the dressing room too much, tentivly looking forward to CL and EPL start hope for a good transfer suprise or two would be nice next week.
Hey ya’ll, I’ve got alot of respect for Udinese, but for the sake of CL qualification, fuck Udinese. We’re the fucking Arsenal, lets not forget it!
Lets get behind the lads Cescless or not. Lets boost the new boys because we need them doing a good job for us!
I’m sure Arsene will get us a decent centre back. I think Squillaci is a decent centre back with a good track record, who maybe found the adaption at Arsenals level slightly tricky to handle.
At the end of the day, teams around the world have been studying us for years and try to get at us at every opportunity. We must stay Utd as a club. Never give up until that final whistle!
Anyway whats happening lads? Holic, Steve T, TS, Catalan and the whole gang?
Just seen the picture. Genius. Hey bossss!
WS – A belated happy international undergarment day to you sir/miss β
This whole Cesc/Nasri thing is making me really fed-up.
Neither player wants to play for us any more. Nasri had a poor latter half of last season and the reported 20 or so million is a very good offer. I can understand that AW doesn’t want to lose any of his best players but is it worth making a player stay for a final year just because he is under contract when he is unlikely to give 100% (you can’t have or give more than 100% despite what the players like to claim) and may well poison the atmosphere in the dressing room.
The Cesc thing seems to have been going on for ever but probably for the last 3 seasons – will he? won’t he? You all know the score. Cesc hasn’t really wanted to be here for some time, his form was patchy last season and he spent a lot of time injured. Yes he has a long contract and yes he is worth more than the reported Barcelona offer but in the circumstances will they up their bid, knowing how unsettled Cesc is and how much he wants to return home? Can we afford to keep him at the club and on the bench and pay his wages just because we have a contract. I remember when Drogba was having a sulk, Mourinho told him that he could play with a happy heart or not at all. Can Arsenal afford to do that with Cesc?
AW and Arsenal FC have backed themselves into a corner over this and it is now difficult to see how they can get out of it without a lot of egg on face but do we want two unsettled and potentially sulking players in the dressing room when money is on offer and replacements may be available? Don’t ask me who or where from.
Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and take a short term loss for a longer term gain. Whatever the outcome is I hope it is over and done with by next weekend. Cesc has been a great player and servant to the Club but we always new he would be off to Barca at some time, perhaps that time is now. Nasri? Another good player but can we afford his attitude? No – get shot and take the 20M I say (if it’s still on offer) and invest it in someone who wants to play for us, he’ll be off on a free next year anyway.
Sell Nasri and buy Mata. Do we really need experts from NASA to execute this β
SV – that doesn’t say he’s world class just yet. I didn’t say he wouldn’t be I said he isn’t yet.
NT are purely built on hype, players gets hyped he gets called to the NT, ask Kieran Gibbs, Kevin Davies and so many more.
It doesn’t say much. He might be world class in the future but all I’m saying is that he didn’t impress me against UTD and that he’s no where near Cesc.
And while we’re at it, his brother is rated a lot higher than him by Barca. And I mean a lot.
Snir – You just keep being stubborn about Tiago until the grave there mate. The English NT sure may be based on hype and whether or not you play for United. But del Bosque (a WC winning manager, unlike so many past English managers btw) was paying attention to Tiago this summer (something you seem to have not) π
What’s all this talk about ‘Arab Spring’? I’ve tried ‘Irish Spring’ and wasn’t too impressed. And isn’t the soap market saturated anyways?
Norlfork –
I know some players like Cesc have been with us for a long time (8 years) and because he hasn’t yet hit his prime in terms of his age, it seems unjust for us to lose such a good player. Unfortunately if everyone keeps leaving’ the team will never settle.
Hopefully we can move on and the players coming through now can push on and cause the kind of problems other teams are weary of, throughout the whole season.
As long as we do not compete in all of the multi buy transfers like certain other spendful clubs, players will feel the team is not strong enough to compete and get drawn in through all of the transfer hype. Look where Adeebayor is now, for example, he doesn’t even want to stay at City!
Snir – Your example of Gibbs is very interesting. Are you saying that you feel a little unsettled gastronomically concerning the fact that he is expected to be our LB this season? I know I feel an upset stomach about it π
I miss Clichy already. Sounds like he will be the first choice blue Mancs’ LB.
SV – what do you want from me with that Thiago dude? Let it go man, you’re acting as if you’re the scout that found him. I don’t care about that cunt. All I was saying is that IMO no matter how much of a prospect he is, he’s not Cesc and won’t be either.
Snir – I just find it really strange how some people can’t give credit to players on other teams simply because they are on other teams (you wrt Thiago, Lars and H2H wrt Suarez). I may think a player (like Suarez) or a manager (like Mou and ORN) are pricks but I can still admit they are exceptional players/managers. I find refusing to admit it to be rather odd. That’s all.
SV – Your point is unfounded since you know what I think of Xavi’s abilities and he is a cunt in my book.
Not just my book either – http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=xavi
SV – Just wondering why you miss Clichy? Is it because of his ability or the total non-movement of transfers? If it’s the latter I can definitely understand (and actually it’s getting scary now), but the former?
Didn’t he show himself practically incapable of springing the offside trap, and didn’t he keep just falling over, giving the opposition winger a free run to the byline? And didn’t he make some absolutely shocking mistakes through indecision, giving the opposition a couple of totally free runs on goal? For me his last season was peppered with massive mistakes.
Morning All & *Boilk*
Footie tonight in Lisbon and it’s the weekend. That’s as positive as I can be for now….
NYG welcome! Good posts. The keys to the CMC are behind the bar.
Norfolk & Gt, welcome back.
Dr.C, have a good break. Trev, hope you enjoyed yours.
*looks for hangover cures in the CMC*
Ollie
Fame at last on Blog’s post. Have another spotters badge from me and whatever your drinking π
I’ve been on that before, TS. nothing new! π
And as you know, I’ve been on TV. I was at someone’s leaving do at work, and there was a guy I have played football with and hadn’t seen he ages, and he went ‘hey, I saw you on TV’. Despite this being a few months old now. I should carry a bag of signed pictures with me π
I’m on call, so I’ll have a soda pop.
Pop away Ollie. Will bring my autograph book with me on 20th π

New York Gooner,
Through a little too much lunchtime drinking and generally pissed up bad behavior I am on a alcoholic sabbatical, however you are a welcome addition to the discussions.
Just a question, you didn’t used to own a pair of Troop trainers did you?
Great pic BTW ‘Holic π
Excellent. Got my team already.
Is there any rules about having scum from the seven sisters in your team?
I for one would feel dirty earning any points of those flea bags. Just saying (well that is until my capt. VDV bangs in a hat-trick).
When needs must NB1 π
Hello all,
Dr Feelgood, I’m here to report that I received the HT Mk II ticket this morning and rest assured I will make the train tonight in Portugal, if someone obliges to let me know the kick off..err..departure time
All kinds of suits -BWS, bio suits are packed, thanks for the disclaimer
NY gooner, welcome to the bar and have a drink on Lars’ tab
RE:Udinese – We’ll stuff them
Clive – Cheers for all the hilarious posts from the previous set of drinks
RE:Cesc/Nasri – Whatever happens, happens
White rum for me and a drink of their choice for all the regulars, please
Cheers
Hello NB, you will have noticed that my team too does not contain any LWC’s.
This will not be a league rule though. Nothing would please me more than to see a ‘holic in the running for the big prizes, so false restrictions will not be in place.
Harsha
Cheers for the drink, pint of San Miguel for me (hair-of-the-dog).
Sounds like you’re perfectly prepared for the trip. Let’s hope Arsenal are too for the start of the season π
HT Mk II is ready to leave as soon as you’ve downed your rim. K.O. at 7:45 PM BST
rum! π³
More stories/tales today of the Soup-er Quality Campbell deal having been completed.
Something relatively positive at least….
something on football365 about Nasri and AW having a row on the flight back from the Far East Tour.
If so he’s gotta go….we all saw what happened in the world cup when the French players got the hump with the boss. Before you know it AW will have to read out a statement from the French players prior to kick off in the Liverpool game.
I am going to use only one team for the various leagues I’m in.
So my self-restrictions of no LWC, no Smashers, no Mancs (either sort), no Chavs or no Stoke players might give me a handicap.
But hey-ho.
Talksport just reported that Steve Rowley our chief scout is at the Birmingham game today and talk is that should he have a good game we will place a Β£10m bid for Scott Dann on Monday morning.
I know talksport aren’t everyone’s cuppa but interesting that Rowley is there today. No smoke and all that…..
Alright, Team Q. O’Coe (wanted to name it CUoCO but thought Q. O’Coe was a lot more clever – I am an intellectual smartarse, me!) has now joined the ‘Holic league! I included Cesc in my team just on pure principle. And of course there are no LWC’s or any St*ke players at all. I did include one Manc player – I just had to have Vidic at the back with Vermaelen. I feel a bit dirty for this, think I’ll have to go have a shower now…
I’ll probably be too lazy to make any changes to the team during the season, so not counting on winning anything!
NB1: I find it extremey hard to believe that we would make any decision whatsoever on Scott Dann based on just this one game alone. I don’t think we are after him, but I have to say I think he would be better than Squillaci any day of the week and that would of course mean improving our squad.
Lonestar: I don’t believe for one second that Cesc has offered to pay part of the transfer sum. And even so, if he would dip into his own pockets to make sure we get the amount we are asking for, how can that be a bad thing?
NY Gooner@66: welcome to the bar, and don’t worry about having to sneak drinks onto my tab while I am asleep – my tab is always open!
Am I the only one who didn’t get what Q. O’Coe means :)?
I am currently keeping half an eye on the Italian Super Cup Final or whatever it is called (their equivalent of the Community Shield), and it made me realize that it will take a meltdown of enormous proportions for us not to knock Udinese out. We are, after all, talking about a team that finished fourth in a league which from next season will lose one of their CL spots to Bundesliga, a team that finished 16 points behind a Milan side that couldn’t even score once over 180 minutes on Huerelo Gomez and where Jimmy Hil… sorry, Gattuso is still a starter every game he is fit. Udinese conceded 43 goals which is the same as we did but they did it in a league in which significantly fewer goals are scored overall. They have also sold their best players. They will also be in an earlier stage of their season.
If we lose to them it will be the one of the biggest failures during the whole Arsene Wenger era.
Snir, Q. O’Coe – CUoCO with a sort of phonetic spelling.
Afternoon All ,
Charlie @28 – 2nd para – well said mate .
Chippy – Chin up , old son , but excellent choice of music all the same .
North Bank 1 @43 – Just my tuppence worth re David Dein . I have no problem that he got 75 mill for his shares – made a good investment and cashed in – fair enough , good luck to him . What I do have a problem with is who he sold those shares to . Usmanov , and I won’t bore you with the gory details , they have been said so many times before , should be nowhere near our club . That he is , is solely down to Dein . He sold to Usmanov to maximise his profit , any suggestion that he did so for the good of Arsenal , is frankly laughable .
Secondly , if Dein had had his way , we would be vulnerable tenants at Wembley , having alienated a significant percentage of our fan-base , and at the mercy of ridiculous price hikes every time the lease came up for renewal . The decision to build a new stadium had to be made , and thank God it was .
If you tell me that Dein was a shrewd negotiator and that he was a real Arsenal supporter , then I will give you a sympathetic ear . Of that , there can be no doubt , though I think that you grossly underestimate the importance of Wenger in attracting 5 of the 7 players you mention to the club . Have we lacked someone of his calibre since he left ? Yes , we probably have . Is the current regime affected by stasis ? Yes , it probably is . But ask yourself why . Dein went behind the back of his fellow Directors ( a cardinal sin in any company ) , because they refused to endorse what he wanted them to do . Dein , miffed , subsequently sold his considerable block of shares to an individual , who he must have known would be at odds with the rest of the Board , culturally , ethically and financially . The present stasis will continue , I would suggest , for as long as Usmanov stalks the corridors of Arsenal power . For that , we have Dein to thank .
Trev @45 – more common sense from you , and although as you acknowledge , a bit doomtastic , its difficult to argue with your summary of where we stand at the moment . Keep the faith , we may yet be surprised .
NYG – Nice first post . Welcome . Have a beer on me when you’re next in .
Harsha @100 – Good stuff and don’t forget the ‘shrooms . π
TS – downing your rim ? π I will let Wolfie know π
Ah , I see Lars is in the Bar and his tab is open …
Ollie @ 106 – sounds familiar. Good luck.
New York Gooner, welcome. Ever get down to the Blind Pig on match day? If not, you should, there as many cool nutters there as you’ll find here (although none wearing speedos and Jimmy Choo heels)
Harsha, Dr Feelgood welcomes you on board but is a bit anxious that you remember to empty out your pockets of psilocybin before you put on any of your suits – tabs will “look after” your goody bags.
TS, San Miguel? Did they run out of rats piss down your local then?
Remember, we are only interested in “super quality” π
Frozen Numpties have joined the illustrious Goonerholic league. Go Numpties!
Consider the bags well and truly looked after Dr Z .
Go Numpties !
Lars – figured something like that but wasn’t sure. Good one lol.
@ tabs – usual quality control required. Remember not to be mixed with “water” π
The lad I go to games with has 2 boys aged 9 & 6. His 9 year old is very switched on, especially with regards to Arsenal. My mate turns to him after the draw and says “we have got Udinese.” He just nods in acknowledgment. His 6 year old mulls this over for a few seconds and says, “dad, have we signed a Chinese player then?” Well it made me laugh.
Top picture by the way….
I , Dr Z , like the Arsenal , ” will keep my powder dry ” π Have no fear .
Steve T @118 π
It’s Wolfgang I’m worried about tabs π
Haha, lovely story, Steve T π
Dr C’s Green Tin Rollers have entered the league, but are not too sure who the hell will be thier captain next week!
It’s a GREAT day, ‘holics. The Midnight Marauders have joined the fray. Lock up your women, drugs, llamas, and children.
Thanks for doing this ‘Hols, I think it will be good.
Lars, my man, I think you are boss, but if you think that a player willing to spend his own funds in order to leave the team on which he is “captain” is in some way a noble gesture, then I have some prime beach real estate to sell you in San Antonio, Texas.
(You guessed it. There is no prime beach real estate in San Antonio.)
Here’s a drink on my tab. We’ll just agree to disagree. I like your penchant for “spin” however. π
Up the Arse.
8 ball…. I had a look for the Numpties, but couldn’t see them. Are they going to be like a new signing?
Ahh a week away in the sun and all is tranquil in the world of Arsenal. Feels like one of those long slow summers from years gone by. Walk by the newstands boys, pass over the link to newsnow and see what happens. Hopefully a good game tonight.
Oh my….
http://khu.sh/usersong_4e3c99309d543
Thanks to @sidrus_sidwell on Twitter.
Holic, I am literally laughing my ass off…
Now I gotta clean the carpet, spilled my coke!
Steve T @118 – Heh
Have we signed super quality yet?
Don’t forget that the game today is live on Arsenal Player, I for one will try out the HD stream. Hope it works.
Heh ‘holic, mwahahahahaha, splendid!
heh holic π
‘Holic@128: π
‘Holic ‘128 – Tuuuuuune π
Right , the fantasy League boys – The Speedo King and The Adam’s Apple Gang are about to enter .
Are you lot taking it seriously ? I want to play Rooney in goal , but at the same time , don’t wish to be bringing up the rear .
What a dilemma !
Evening all. Important question. Have to phone my order through to the men with woks and a van.
Do I want Szechuan chicken, Kung Po, Sweet and sour, Satay, or Thai red or green curry?
Five minute poll.
Tabs @ 136. Seriously? no. π
70’s style Sweet n Sour
Satay always good for the peanut taste!
So, score draw. Think I’ll cast the deciding vote for satay.
Only seeing it now, was going to vote Satay to, so go for it! π
Dr. C., Green Tin Rollers (great name!) weren’t showing up when I looked, but Frozen Numpties were in the list. Odd …
Holic @ 137
I think we will struggle to get a work permit for any of them π
Evening all (without the bendy knee thing)
Nice one ‘holic and Daryll, funny stuff from fantasy island.
On the subject of fantasy, H2HFC have joined the league. fair warning, I’ll use players from any team. `The first season I played I used to pick players in form just to see if I could put a kind of curse on them, I had a team full of Chav’s indebteds and balancing cocks. It worked pretty well, but last season it backfired and I won a HtoH league I was in. Now I just pick willy nilly. Good luck to all who join, if nothing else it’s always good for a laugh.
Nice anecdote from Steve T.
Eagle eye reward for Ollie.
A grammy for the best 1min 10 sec remix for ‘holics link above.
A warm welcome to the new arrivals and a welcome back to some old friends.
Once again it’s been pissing down all day here, (worse…..summer,,,,,ever,,,) and I’ve got a nasty bout of flu (would you Adam n Eve it) No beers and ciggies for me again today, I’m even to Tom n Dick to stand behind the bar (the other half’s on duty) I’m under strict orders to remain on the tea and honey for the next few days, luckily I Irished it up a bit when no one was looking.
Drinks all round barkeep, but don’t get too close lads, I wouldn’t want to infect ya.
Cusop, pull up a chair. ;P
Zico 144, Heh. π
I can see all your formentioned teams, i think you’re missing them as they are on two pages (click on next at page bottom)
H2H, replied to your email… Waiting for your answer.
I’ll get on it Snir.
Cheers H2H.
Is it normal to get hyped up for a friendly ?
I guess the offseason has taken its toll on me, I’m going nuts without football.
I think you should try to see it for what it is, a cance for the lads to work on their fitness and sharpness before next week, when the real deal starts, then you can get hyped.
I like to think (deluded though I may be) that the whole off season was just a massive mind fuck to make others think that we aren’t as strong as we might be, but in reality we will start the new season with a bang and sweep away all that is put in front of us.
My HT seat is all but guarenteed. π
By the way Holics, I opened a thread on the league forum.
It’s to make sure we know each Holics’ team name since most of you are using nicknames.
Nicknames we know Snir, it’s when people start using their real names that it gets confusing. π
H2HFC should be pretty self explanitory.
Looks like Gibbs is fit and travelled then (thank fuck for tha).
The 19 non-alphabetical list should have been a list of 20 after all.
Gervinho set up by Arsh and Rosicky. Need to work on that.
Ooh, nearly a Robin chip…
Yeeesss, great finish Robin, set up by Arshavin and Gibbs.
We just scored a goal from a cross from the LB.
How is that possible?
What a player Alex Song is.
Amazes me time and time again.
Last goal set up by our previous left back was with his right foot π
Something new there.
That’s a fucking diabolical challenge by Garay FFS. What a cunt.
I feel like crying.
Can’t that player catch a break?
You talking about robin,Snir? He seemed to be fine after that π
Good performance so far..I think we still need a signing at center half
Gervinho lively again so far
Gibbs pretty impressive first half, in both halves of the field.
Robin wrapped up in cotton wool till next Saturday now?
Looked lively at the entrance to the tunnel as they went off.
Maybe a good free for all would build a bit of team spirit…
Workmanlike first half
For me Gibbs look a bit lacking, but Gervinho is a breath of fresh air
Lets hope no problem for RVP after that horrendous tackle and gets a rest for 2nd half
COYR
RVP no longer of the chocolate legs…could be a full season from him with a bit of luck
Harsha – I get the feeling that with Robin’s injury record he’s trying to show the world he’s tough by carrying on. He did that the last 2 times he got injured, against Blackburn and against Birmingham.
Gibbs was excellent in my opinion, but Song was my MoM for this half.
Fucking cunt of a defender there. Idiotic thing to do in a friendly. Arsene, tell the Dutch NT that there is no way whatsoever in hell that he plays against Rooney and assorted other cunts on Wednesday.
Pretty good first half, though. A lot of huffing and puffing and a lot of running from Benfica who are clearly really fired up for this game bur for all their industry they don’t create much at all. Not one shot on target in the first half while we could and maybe should have had at least one more goal.
Right, see you at full time!
Looking good ‘Holics despite being Cesc-less and Nas-less
Beware the substitutions @ half-time. Perspective needed. Just sayin π
A round for all pls Barman. I have some rat p*ss and a squeaky clean rum.
That challenge was diabolical, especially in the context of a friendly.
Sagres, please, barman.
Claude Puel loooooooooooooooooves Arsenal, it’s clear to hear.
Oh fuck, Squillaci π
Had to leave the other place, Ollie. Full of mongs tonight. Yer man will make a fortune in tenners to get away from those cunts.
Heh, TS. Keep your Rodent vinegar.
I obviously jinxed Gibbs but TV was poor there….
Didn’t take long, did it? π
Come on you blues, pull it back together. We were looking ho before that Vermy slip at the back π
hot π³
Some serious dyslexia today, TS, and most embarrassing too π
Nice work Squillaci again…
So we ARE signing a central defender, right? π
No probs ‘Holic, all’s KO orev ehre π
Mmmm…. we really do not want to be relying on Squilly when the heat is on.
Good game of footie. Good test for our defence and mental strengz now…
Yoh! Welcome back our Henri! π
I’m not in the squad Lansbury comes on.
Sadly Jenkinson, with Squillaci alongside him, looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights…
Some friendy…get stuck in Vermy, they don’t like it up ’em!
For some reason Chamakh wants to do everything in one touch
Nothing good came out of this “friendly”.
A potential RvP injury and a chance for the gloomers to go all guns blazing on everybody from AW to the board to Kroenke.
Snir
Is that your positive side coming to the fore again? π
Right, I’m off
Arsene, please make some defensive signings
Oh well. Better try and put that into some words that don’t sensationalise. Laters ‘holics. Thanks for your company.
Well. Good to get all your defensive howlers out the way before the real stuff starts, right?
Fabianksi still an excellent shot stopper – just as well.
Now, the HT is making a quick return to Blighty, for the inaugural trip to The Strawberry, outside St James Park on Saturday.
Now, where’s Storey gone with them keys?
Keys behind the bar zico.
Definitely a game of two halves….. first half, we loked very good.
Second, on came Squilly, off went RVP and that was that.
Sorry TS, I’ve got no positive side in me when I see Sebastian Squillaci. He makes me head straight to the CMC.
What will need to happen before we can finally get a CB?!? All I’m asking for is a CB. I don’t even care if it’s Scott Dann anymore and having TV and Kos as the primary pairing, just please buy a CB.
It’d be a crime if we start the season with the same 4 CB’s. If we do I don’t really see how we’ll improve our weaknesses from last year (as stated by AW).
Frimpong had a good game and is building his Mr T image up nicely. So many changes was bound to affect it but Benfica made 10 odd changes and were still able to force their style of play on us throughout. Lot of new young blood who will be good for a carling cup run. First half was very positive for Gibbs and Gervihno and Arsh is looking fit. 3 of our main midfield missing was bound to cause problems. Lets hope the 2 want aways can refocus now on next season and quit the shitetalk (or lack of it, which infers inherent evil anyway). Not long now..
Not going to get too worked up about this match, unless of course RvP has a bad one. Then I will be Snir raging. π
Perhaps a little ‘boo’ is permitted chaps at this point
I was looking to see the strength in depth of the squad, given the absent first teamers, and our proclivity for long-term injuries
Did I see a squad capable of surviving in the EPL – No
How did we arrive at 48% possession – I dont know – we must have had 96% in the first half, given we had virtually zero in the second
AW has a lot of signing to do and very little time to do it in
Now maybe I see the need for a fantasy league to keep the HT sane
Commiseration drinks all round
The first goal was actually neither Squillaci’s nor Vermaelen’s fault – it was Jenkinson who was frozen to the ground when the three others pushed up. The scorer would have been offside had it not been for Jenkinson. But on the second… oh my, Squillaci was off buying a hot dog there.
Good first half, the second can safely be discarded because of all the subs. I’ve often thought it would be better to play friendlies in two halfs of 30 minutes and keep the same players on for the duration instead of doing these mass substitutions.
Snir
Squilly is definitely the champion of the boo boys at the mo’ and he probably deserves it.
I’d love acouple of signings too (who wouldn’t?) but our first team looks decent.
Don’t know enough about Dann-dan-the-defending-man to comment.
Looked alright when the first team were out , I thought . Flipper can go pat people for fun .
We’ll forget the second half , I think .
Now in other news , The Speedo Massive , managed by Wolfgang Smallballs , are up and running , and not a spud , a manure , a chelski or a mugsmasher in sight . ‘Holic , H2H , Nas , Lonestar and Dr C – start preparing your boys for one hell of a drubbing . The future is ours , yhe future is Speedo .
Find them keys Dr Z ?
I’m done raging for now Zico ;).
Just one more week. Can’t wait, but just want a CB :D.
And my 2nd wish to the Genie would be that RvP isn’t injured, and if he is then make him injured in normal people’s time not AW time where a week or so is 8 months π
cognac: unless we have a huge number of injuries you won’t see a team that’s even close to the one we had at the start of the second half and onwards. Don’t forget as well that Benfica are further into their season than we are, their competitive season has already started.
Boos at the Parc des Princes.
PSG lost 1-0 at home with 5 new signings, and having paraded their brand new β¬42m acquisition before kick-off.
Goodnight, folks.
TS, as you know, preseason is for everybody and not just the first team, and we need all players to be fit cause god knows we’re a team that likes to get injured.
So whether we like it or not we can’t discard the 2nd half cause it was the 2nd team cause they’re gonna be called upon to play in this season as well. They just need to be better than today.
Lars,
“…But on the secondβ¦ oh my, Squillaci was off buying a hot dog there…”
Heh! First class π
Peer pressure is gonna get me involved in this silly fantasy footy lark, I can feel it.
Just telling you now, I am aiming for mid-table mediocrity at best. 8)
Just the ticket zico π
Snir, I wasn’t discarding the second half. The word I choose to use is perspective. Please don’t jump to conclusions on my behalf. Thanks!
Saw this comment (And yes I realise it’s errors and performances rather than just results that concern some people):
Importance of pre-season rslts: Spurs in 08 = WWDWWWWW – season starts – LLDLDLLL. Chelsea in 10 = WLLLL – season starts – WWWWW
damn it, these flu’s getting the best of me and I droused off during the game. (amature mistake, I know) Will just have to wait for the summary later.
tabs, challenge accepted.
Zico, sign up mate, y’know it makes sense.
You’re right TS, sorry, it was meant for Lars at 198. Please accept my sincere apologies dear friend π
Perspective is needed, true. I do feel that our first team is ready, but our backups are not even close to that.
Nice one, Charlie.
That’s probably why they are “back ups” Snir.
Ofcourse in an ideal world you’d want two top class players for every position, but unfortunatly that is rarely so,
No problem Snir! The bar wouldn’t be the same without you π
Right, enough kissing or we might get a tongue lashing from Wolfgang…
TS @213 – I’m too busy managing my football team to get involved in that kind of carry-on . π
Charlie @ #208,
Great post, great perspective. Cheers and a drink and/or prescription of your choice.
H2H, in their base I don’t think our backups are bade players, they’re just not ready for the season that’s all. Apart from Squillaci, I have no problem with any of the backups we have. It’s just that with AW’s rotation policy there’s a good chance they’ll play more than expected…
Wolfgang
I’m assuming TSM has an orange home kit? When I say kit I mean orange shorts, no socks or shirts and sling-back boots. Am I close?
*bad
BTW, did we sign Soup-er (Quality) Campbell today???
Thanks TS – don’t get me wrong, I don’t exactly think the Treble is on or anything this year and things will be tough, but helps not to fly totally off the handle based on what’s happened in these recent games.
TS . ha ha π not even close . The Speedo massive are of course in Arsenal red . I will however be imposing a strict dress code on my players when off the pitch . Orange speedoes and JC’s the order of the day .
I agree Snir, I think that some (not you) lose perspective when it comes to the second string. Behalf from maybe CC games or Fa cup matches against lower league opposition, these players will not form the basis of our team. At the most there will be three of them at any one time on the pitch.
Walks in the Bar shakes his head and walks back out, This is sadly the worst squad Wengers had it’s fucked on so many levels it’s untrue I’ve seen more balance in a one legged arse kicking contest π
Hey Charlie, what do you mean the Treble is not on? The Treble at least, mate, remember? π
Right, the team is created. No Chavs, IOUs, Spuds, or Mickey Mousers. All of the players in my team, we have either been linked with in recent times or had some “moment” against us in a match in 2010-11. Apart from the one Man City player who I picked purely cause I like him and think he would be nice to old ladies.
Quake in your boots fantasy footers – here comes Milken Alcohol.
@ Chippy,
that can’t possibly be true – we are only looking to introduce Super Quality players now amongst all this quality π
Let’s judge things on next Saturday, for all you know we could be 4 goals up in the first 30 minutes……….oh.
Dr Z – I shall see you on the field of play π
Zico,
Super Quality hey – I’ve seen a scarecrow in the local field that’s got more quality than squilachi maybe we should sign him up on 50 k a week π
Wolfgang, as long as the Dress Code is robustly enforced, then you will.
But ONLY on the field of play.
U Milken. π π
I expect the scarecrow is more mobile Chippy π
If this was our final test, then I’m sorry it wasn’t good enough!
