The Finest Goalkeeper I Can’t Remember
Jan 12th, 2012 by 'holic
So, next up it will be Swansea City, or Swansea Town as I first remember them. Every time I see the name of the place I am reminded of one of the finest goalkeepers, ‘holicdad argued the finest, ever to play for Arsenal. You see Swansea was the birthplace of Jack Kelsey, and Gooners of my vintage and older will be only too pleased to sit and talk to you about this legend of a man.
I say Gooners of my vintage. Although I was certainly in attendance for a number of appearances by him, I was too young to remember him as a player. My personal recollections of him are as the manager of the first Arsenal shop behind the Clock End in Avenell Road. In a piece of mine published by the excellent Arsenal Collective I have described how ‘holicdad and I would always pop into the club shop for a quick chat with Jack. He always had time to talk with supporters who still clearly looked up to him even when injury had long since ended his playing career.
Jack signed for Arsenal as a twenty year old in 1949 from the Swansea & District League side, Winch Wen. No, that probably wouldn’t happen today. It was February 1951 before Jack got the chance to deputise for George Swindin, destined to become the club’s manager just seven years later when the Welshman had established himself firmly as Arsenal and Wales number one. Two years later Jack collected a League championship medal making 29 appearances as he shared the goalkeeping duties with his predecessor.
Thereafter he was between the posts as an automatic choice other than during periods of injury, and there were some of those. He was fearless, I’m told, when putting his body on the line to confront oncoming forwards, and was known for the sort of head first diving challenge perfected by Bob Wilson in the sixties and seventies. A broken arm sustained against Sheffield United in the 1959 FA Cup meant he finished the match on the left wing (for there were no substitutes in those days) and missed a number of matches as a result.
Jack’s Welsh debut came in 1954, and he was the custodian when they made their only appearance in the finals of the World Cup in 1958. They were toppled by eventual winners Brazil in the quarter-final (see the video here) only when the seventeen year old Pele had an opportunist effort take a massive deflection for the only goal of the game. See below one other occasion when the seventeen year old destined to become the world’s best was denied by our man.
Jack’s career was destined to end prematurely, ironically against Brazil, as a result of his courage. Bob Wall, the secretary then director first known by supporters as Mr Arsenal, tells the story in his 1971 book, ‘Arsenal From The Heart’.
Jack, incidentally, was one of Britain’s finest goalkeepers and gave Arsenal, his only professional club, wonderful service for 13 years until he injured his back playing for Wales in Sao Paulo, South America, in the summer of 1962. After months of painful treatment, including six weeks with his body in a wire cage, Jack learned that his career was at an end.
That brave challenge on the striker Vava denied new Arsenal manager Billy Wright his first-choice goalkeeper, and in truth Arsenal didn’t find a proper replacement until Bob Wilson established himself after an FA Cup defeat against Birmingham City in 1968. Jack was employed by the club first as promoter for the Improvement Society, then when the first club shop opened in their office he was a natural choice to head the project. A magnet for potential customers in the days before slick marketing and superstores existed.
Jack sadly passed away in 1992, just 62 years of age. I remember chatting with ‘holicdad when it happened. Then, as many times before, he insisted that Jack was the best goalkeeper we ever had, and I wish I could remember watching him, even once. His command of the area was legendary, his bravery undoubted. I’ll never forget those brief chats in that tiny shop though.
“What do you reckon about today then, Jack?”
“We’ll be ok, son, I reckon.”
And a starry-eyed lad always believed him.

Lovely wee tale. Really enjoyed it, cheered up a rather annoying day, cheers!
Nice stuff ‘Holic . Jack sold me the scarf I still wear to this day .
Pint of Guinness please and one for yourself .
Here’s a post-retirement photo of Jack. Classy merchandise we had in those days, not like the generic guff they sell today. The car is quality as well.

..If only I hadn’t stopped to open that bottle….
Right, off to read the post!
“We’ll be ok son”. Prescient as well.
Nice post holic.
Great pic Ricey, cheers.
Evening all. Sorry it is a bit late. Wanted to get it right. Hope I have.
Actually TaBS, I have a scarf Jack sold me too…
Fantastic and gentle piece ‘Holic.
A nice end to the day, and compliments this bottle of Tempranillo / Cab Sav rather well.
I think you nailed it spot on. Clearly meant a lot to you , too.
*raises glass*….
Holic , heh π , and what Mr C said .
played ‘holic a sweet piece indeedy
And in answer to your question over the post tabs – it’s more a case of drying out than loading up at the mo. My the world looks strange from ‘ere.
Bring on the weekend
I have the banner in his right hand or at least very similar for the 1979 FA Cup Final. Bit ratty today but still gets an airing when we make Finals. 79 ticket obtained by clipping coupons from the programs. Memories.
I’ve got to say, the quality of your writing is outstanding. It shines through on the historical pieces especially, and is a treat to read.
There are many on t’internet who could learn a little…
And, amazingly, it seems to be getting better!
*raises glass again, toasts health of Management and memories of those not with us any longer. Empties glass, reaches for bottle…*
Clive will have memories of Jack. Looking forward to him popping in.
Excellent piece ‘Holic, I usually come back to see if anyone has replied to my comment in the previous post, and I find a brand spanking new post awaiting π
‘Boilk’, anyone?
And what are you good peeps Twitter handles @?
(I just made it yesterday :D)
Hi AL , bring on the weekend indeed , welsh dragons to be slain and all that …
Crikey , Holic , your scarf looks in far better nick than mine !
Really nice story and informative as ever. Wonderful blog as ever.
Don’t think they sold many TaBS, but I remember a well-known Arsenal face back in the day wearing one under his always open sheepskin, and thought it looked the mutts.
Brought it out of retirement for the FA Cup semi against Chelsea at Wembley, and it hasn’t seen daylight since. Carefully stored again for the grand’holics.
Wind
Look for @DrC_Quackery…. pretty sure there is only one. Quackery, that is….
Nice reminiscence, ‘Holic. When I was a kid, they said that he and Lev Yashin were the two best keepers in the world. That Wales team that got to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1958 had some talent, but he pretty much got them there on his own back. Goalkeepers had to be brave then. Centre forwards in the Football League were like battering rams and the laws of the game didn’t much protect keepers. Kelsey was big and strong and as brave as any. He was commanding in his area and had that ‘presence’ that the great keepers exude. His career-ending injury came in his early 30s, when he was at his peak and still had several more top seasons in him. Had he played deeper into the 1960s, more would remember and recognize him for the great keeper he was.
Yup Mr C, CMC abuser, that seems about right π
So that Mr C, and I found ‘Holic through chance after searching yesterday as he replied to him.
I spy Mr TrueStorey also… π
i’ve got a red and white silk ’71 scarf somewhere given to me by the mate of my old man’s who used to take me to The Arsenal in my early days – not sure where it is now though
wonder if he’ll pick the king or bring him on to the rescue – can’t wait to see him and RVP swarming the swans at some point on saturday
UrEDS!
There are others lurking, Wind….. shall let you discover them. Check who I am following.
Personally, I am looking forward to Wolfie signing on.
When I say “abuse” I mean, of course, constructive use….
AL
Heart says start King Henry II and RVP together. Head says 30 minute cameo….
Aye CG bound to agree – just hope it’s not RVP he replaces
Jack Kelsey in action at 28.20 . Magnificent save from Bobby Charlton .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ff__Y9lMCo
Twitter Mr C ? Not sure .
Holic , that scarf looks too good to be worn . One for the grandkids indeed .
Beautiful piece, ‘holic.
Even us, who have only read about Arsenal at that time, can be moved by your writing.
While we are wandering down memory lane, here is a clip of the famous 1956 FA Cup 3rd Round replay against Bedford, in which Jack Kelsey played. The commentary is vintage, in every respect.
http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=40004
To ‘Holic’s scarf, here is a clip of an FA Cup game against Blackpool in 1953, in which we are playing in striped shirts, almost the same pattern as the scarf. Kelsey breaks the Blackpool centre forward’s leg, diving at his feet trying to stop the winning goal.
http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=30770
Brilliant clips all.
Thank you.
Great stuff ‘holic, thank you.
I’ve come over all nostalgic, especially from that photo Ricey posted. If I’m not mistaken Jack is leaning on a Morris Marina which also happened to be my first car!
I have fond memories of my dad taking me to the shop and telling me all about Jack Kelsey, my Dad was a goalkeeper and played for the RAF during the 2nd world war so he always made sure I had an appreciation for goalies.
To think that tiny shop was our only retail venture, I’m so glad I was around to see football when it was still part of the community and players wages were only on a par with a succesful business man, sigh……..
Wonderful Pathe news, cheers NBN.
Boy do I miss Highbury.
Holic, You’ve earned that shirt and the right to wear it.
Oops – darn it – just watched the whole thing again tabs – 2 bedfordshire and beyond!
Tabs and NBN, Enjoyed the clips and I urge everyone to watch them when they have a chance.
CG @ 12 My sentiments, exactly.
Great post holic. You know I love reading this nostalgia pieces.
What’s everyone drinking?
Another superb history piece ‘Holic – goes without saying really.
Very pleased to hear you and Mrs ‘H have some relatively good news.
Tabs – various bits of good work in the previous drinks re AW/Arsenal and the state of the Spuds.
Personally, I had one experience which involved Jack Kelsey. I don’t remember the year, but I do remember it was a match against the Spuds, at Highbury, which featured George Graham and Terry Venables, and ended in a 4 – 4 draw.
Just old enough (definitely wouldn’t be these days) to be allowed to go to Highbury with friends, rather than adults, my two mates and I were waiting a bit nervously in the queue for the turnstiles outside the ground, at just after midday – yep, for a 3.00pm kick-off !
Jack Kelsey, as he introduced himself, asked us if we would like a little job in return for a SEAT ! Having never been near a seat we all grabbed the chance in an instant.
The job ? Handing out Arsenal Bingo leaflets, advertising bingo cards that were on sale at various points, the prizes being tickets to Arsenal matches.
Our station ? Right where just about every Spuds fan was trying to get up the steps onto the North Bank – no segregation in those days.
The result ? Our seats were earned in record time ‘cos the Spuds fans snatched handfuls of leaflets from us, ripped them up and threw them all over the ground.
Mr Kelsey ? No word of complaint or mistrust, just took us personally to our seats in the East Lower and left us to enjoy the game.
It was all a bit different then. Some good, some bad.
Another gem ‘holic.
The late great Mr Kelsey had retired before I was born, but the couple who used to take me and my brother to Highbury were regular fixtures in the Clockend during his career.
For years we popped into the shop pre-match for a chat with the great man, he always had time for us and he’d often have little treats for my sibling and I, signed photos, programmes and memrobelia.
He was an Arsenal man through and through and a true gent, I remember shedding a tear when I heard of his passing.
Hey Holic: The dialog below with you and old Jack sounds better when played in the old Pathe News voice. Try it:
Holic: βWhat do you reckon about today then, Jack?β
Old Jack: βWeβll be ok, son, I reckon.β
See…
@ Ned: I never read the drinks before I posted 39 – it seems that we were on the same wavelength..
Great save mind
Holic
Wonderful nostalgic piece on a goalkeeper i do remember.!!
And Sweeper Dad reinforced Holic Dad’s declaration that Big Jack was a Keeper out of the very top draw.Indeed my Old Man said he was privileged to have been alive to see what he considered up until his sad passing, were the 3 best keepers of all time.
They were in no particular order,
Our Jack,Bert Trautmann of Man City and Germany, and the Black Spider,Lev Yashin, of Dynamo Moscow and Russian fame.
I was also lucky enough to see all 3 play.
One of the things you didn’t mention Holic was that Jack never ever wore Gloves, the old fella told me he just used to spit on his hands and rub them together to create a bit of a ‘ grip ‘
I can vouch for his complete lack of self preservation over the years i was lucky enough to watch him play, diving head first into rucks of players in the penalty area with boots flying everywhere, but incredibly
99 times out of a 100 he would emerge unscathed.!!
I had my picture taken with him outside Highbury one Saturday,Dad took the picture with his old Brownie Camera, and Jack couldn’t have been nicer.
I also used toregularly pop in to the Arsenal ‘Hole in the Wall’ shop with my Dad on Matchdays and Jack would always be there with a smile and a kind word for every little Gooner.
Remember Mr Subway’s wedding a couple of weeks back, where i said i was on a Table at the Reception with a load of mad Football followers, and we were all naming our Top 5 players of all time,
Well Gentleman Jack was in my 5,that’s how highly i rated him.
Injury cruelly robbed him of several more years of top flight football,
His insurance payout was 5,000 quid and his Testimonial against Rangers raised 7,000.
A truly great bloke who was kindness personified to the Little Holic and the not so little Sweeper whenever we crossed his path.
Vale Jack.
Cheers
Clive
Bollocks, I know i was feeling shit, I forgot to call my dad yesterday.
Stupid cunt.
Aaahh Ollie – sunshine and light in the mornings!
Great posts Trev and Clive
Another magical post which left me tear-eyed. I could come to Swindon just to share a pint with you and listen to more Arsenal stories. Cheers ‘Holic
Ollie
Be grateful you’ve got one to call.
Old player I never saw blah blah blah. Best there ever was blah blah blah.
And yet when I hear it from ‘holic, for some reason I pay more attention. Your piece on Pat Rice a while back made me look up his playing career, and Ill do the same on Mr Kelsey now.
Nice one ‘holic.
Thanks ‘holic excellent piece – I couldnt afford to make the trip to Highbury on the 653 trolley bus too often, but I do have a vague memory of seeing Jack perform
It provoked a memory of our nasty PE teacher at school – OK I wasnt the most sporty type – but he was Reg Tricker who, very occasionally talked about having played for us – and now he has his own entry on Wiki – showing that he played in the 20s before moving on to Clapton Orient – now there’s a team to worry about!
Geoff @ 31
All of us Oldies miss Highbury.
All of our footballing life was lived there.
All the memories, good and bad, never to be forgotten.
Everything relvolved around that great Old Stadium.
I personally have never been to the Ems and probably never will in what’s left of my life.
It just isn’t the same,far too commercialised,dare i say it,Sanitised and Americanised.
Everyone else can move on, but I’m staying on Highbury Time.
Cheers
The Highbury Sweeper.
Highbury Sweeper @ 48, well that leaves most of us with no knowledge of Highbury to try and forge an new identity for the Ems with no experience of the mighty old π
Troubling thoughts indeed.
Is there something I missing?
Just booked a ticket for a mate for Blackburn.
I notice
a) the booking fee has increased (is it VAT increase?) from 1.65 to 2.10 (didn’t notice/pay attention on my most recent bookings to be fair).
b) I get charge Β£2.20 postage? WTF.
It’s really annoying that more than 3 weeks before the game, while the game has been on sale to Reds for just over a week, you have to be considered part of the ‘Friends & Family’ scheme even if you book something with someone’s normal red membership.
Besides, if it’s the same as usual, me being the lead member, they’re supposed to send, even abroad. On all 3 previous cases where I get charged postage, I never got the tickets anyway so had to collect a duplicata at the box office on the day.
I’m being very unimpressed by this rip-off.
Heh at my self-defining first sentence:
‘am’ is clearly missing.
Is it ‘cos I French? π
No it’s not cos he’s French.
Arsenal.con ripped me off Β£2.20 to post a ticket to me, despite the fact that I will be using my membership card to enter the stadium.
Never realised this happened after a certain point…..as I usually get my tickets from a friend on Silver card.
I guess having my audio on mute on my laptop I never heard the “Stand and Deliver” message as I entered the ticketing system……
Happy Friday the 13th everybody!
zico, if they send the ticket you won’t technically be using your membership card to access the stadium as it won’t be activated, you’ll use the paper ticket to open the gate.
But yes, it is a stupid system, Mr Ant.
Afternoon Coq lovers ,
Cheers for the kind words Trev , and great story @37 .
Nice stuff H2H , and another great dip into the memory banks from Clive @42 .
AL @32 – it was difficult to resist wasn’t it !
Not much going on today it would seem , and so I am left to contemplate the slightly disturbing image of Dr Z dressed as Adam Ant .
You’re not going to start waving a gun around on your next visit to The Tollie , are you Doc ? π
Here are two more Pathe News clips for those of you nostalgic for the days of cloth caps and a packet of Woodbinesβ¦.

Zico @ 54, Stand and Deliver! π
Great stuff Ned .
The sound of John Arlott’s voice certainly takes me back to my childhood . It’s often forgotten that he did a lot of football in his early career , before becoming “the voice of cricket” . Have an inkling that Arlott had a soft spot for The Gunners , though I might have dreamt that . Might be getting him mixed up with that other Cricket legend , Brian Johnston , who was definitely an Arsenal man .
As regards the second film , how things change … “Football is a dead end job “!
Well most things anyway … comforting to note that Jimmy Hill was too fond of the sound of his own voice , even way back when π
As I am even older than Holic (it is possible) I remember the big man at Highbury but sadly I started going the season after he retired. I was one of many starry eyed kids in the schoolboys enclosure (for youger readers a standing section in front of the East Stand between the dugout and the North Bank) waiting for him to take his seat in the East Lower as he often sat there.
As with many of my peer group I would nag my Mum for the admission money from early Saturday morning in order to be outside the gates at 12.30 when they opened in order to stand in the freezing cold until the 15.00 kick off. Having said that the magic of being at Highbury meant that duffle coat short trousers and plimpsoles were more that adequate protection against the cold as not being inside the ground as soon as it opened was not an option.
That magic was still there when an hour after the final whistle of the Wigan game I left for the final time with tears streaming down my face knowing I would never be back and that incredible feeling of elation I got every time I caught my first glimpse of the pitch on entering the ground was there for every game.
Truly we were and are very lucky people to be part of the Arsenal.
I love these pieces on the history of the club. They make me feel more connected to a past I wasn’t around to experience for myself. Cheers for that, ‘Holic!
Wind@14: twitter name is @LarraLundstedt
Ned@28: in your first link, the winning goal is scored by Vic Groves – he was Perry Groves’ grandfather, wasn’t he?
tabs@57: heh, I am happy to see I’m not the only one who saw the image of zico entering the Tollie wearing Adam Ant clothing and makeup…
Neil C@61: great post.
Hello all,
Vic was Perry’s uncle, I think, Lars. Off to find Larra on Twitta π
Holic @63 Me too!
I have an inkling (definitely the new word) that Wolfie may be less disturbed by Dr Z in war paint…
@64
If I wasn’t following him already, that is!
#fridaybrainfog#
While Holic is on twitta, I officially proclaim this ‘Peter Pan Day’. Don’t know why I’m in such a good mood, but after looking at the latest training pics of our lads, I can’t help but be optimistic. BTW, Buffon is my favorite goalie of all time. What a character!
Holic@63: feck, I did write uncle first but changed it to grandfather – should have stuck with my original thought π
Mr C @64 , I am always on the lookout for a Price Charming π
If he likes a little make-up , so much the better !
Nice post Neil C @61
Lars has been followed successfully, maybe he doesn’t even know it yet… π #espionage
‘Holic, do you know who I am yet? π
Hi there Holic. Greetings from Kingston, Jamaica. I loved this piece and the one you did for the Arsenal Collective. The site wouldn’t allow me to leave a comment but what I wanted to say was this:
I first started to watch the Arsenal in 1966 at the age of 11. But unlike many of the older Holics I had no family tradition; no Dad that took me to games etc. But as a local lad (born in Mercers Road, opposite the Royal Northern) and schooled in Holloway, eleven years of age was the earliest I could sneak off to watch a game (under the pretext that I was at the Hornsey Swimming Pool and Public Baths for the afternoon)….At 12 my Mom tumbled me but to my shock it turned out that she was also a Gooner but had never ever discussed the fact with me because – wait for it – she thought I supported Spurs!!!…WTF??? But I knew why she would have thought that: My school, Holloway, was a hotbed of local rivalry and my best buddy at the time supported Spurs and came from a whole family of Spuds. They lived across the road from us…and as I spent most of my waking hours over there ego..
Keith and his Dad really worked on me. They had all the programmes from their glorious double season. Keith’s room was festooned in pictures of Alan Gilzean, Alan Mullery and Jimmy Greives (sp) etc. They wanted to take me to White Shite Lane – fortunately they were not regular goers – but every time they were going and wanted to take me it clashed with us going over to Luton for the weekend to visit my Aunt Ivy, my Mom’s sister…now that I think of it perhaps my Mom didn’t want me to get contaminated!
Long story short: They may have even won in the end (turning me to the dark side) had I not developed a friendship with Chris – soon to become my next best mate. He was a mad Gooner and that was that as they say…..
Wolfie
~Ridicule is nothing to be scared of.
But I know you are strong!
Well, there’s a lad who doesn’t know who he is. ( @ 70)
Could be amnesia, I guess. π
Ollie @ 56 – thanks for the heads up – could have been problematic on the day you hadn’t told me.
“Spending my cash looking flash and grabbing your attention” π
Oh I am on twits as well but hardly ever bleat….
@zico5001
Dr Z @74 –
“The way you look you’ll qualify for next year’s old age pension!” π
Shall pass on your advice to Wolfie Mr C π
The Guinness is strong this evening. The Swansea preview will defo be tomorrow…
Ridicule all you like Wolfie, I’m not scared. π
heh , touche π
GT @ 71, loved it, ‘she thought you supported Spurs!?’ π
Dr Z @ 73, very nice Senor π
It’s too late and looks like I’ll have to to some work at the weekend, for free, as usual and I’m getting really fed up.
things don’t work as fine as I hope and I keep wasting time finding issues that really should have been found earlier by other people and oh well.
Not looking so good for next week, it’s the first time I feel like I won’t necessarily be up to the task.
Another great piece as usual ‘holic.
I would appear to be a few years older than you & saw Jack Kelsey many times & for most of my generation he was THE hero, a real stand out in the team of the late 1950s.
He was similar in style to Bob Wilson & Bert Trautmann, being superb at catching the high crosses, despite there being no protection from the Trevor Fords of the day, & bravely diving at feet, which eventually did for him.
We have had many great ‘keepers in my time – Bob, Jimmy Rimmer (kept us up), Pat Jennings, ‘Safe Hands’ but Jack will always be no 1 for me.
Can someone take me home now please?
Wayne Bridge about to sign for Arsenal? Say it ain’t so! π
And it’s only now that I see I left the cooker on last night.
No need to turn the radiator on.
It ain’t so, Wind.
Thank fuck Ollie.
Evening all – thanks Catalan, Tabs – and here’s back atcha for 68 π
Clive @42 – great stuff. Sounds like Jack would have rounded off the Golders Green Ramblers’ defence quite nicely – diving headlong into a melee of flying leather and lace. π
Sounds like Wolfgang
diving headlong into a melee of flying leather and lace
The devil take your stereo and your record collection.
It’s a dog eat dog world out there, but I reckon that Wolfie, as a Young Parisian, will be ok.
π ok, laces. then π
Hey Catalan –
careful, whatever you do, don’t mention zico’s collection π
Blimey, that’s over two hours of my life I won’t get back. The draw for the 1st round of the Goonerholic Fantasy Premier League is in the relevant League forum.
The HT Cup can wait until next week. I need a malt…
Trev,
I’m more of a digital type. m4a especially π
Blimey Ollie, go steady, mon ami…
GoonerTerry takes the ball from the goalie and hoofs it up-field – bypassing the midfield (0;
Lovely piece holic doing what you do best..First keeper for me was Pat Jennings. Abiding memory for some reason is a tv ad he did with stretchy arms..no idea why. We have had some great keepers
Chases GoonerTerry’s hit-and-hope long-ball…
Extract : Friday 13th (oooh dodgy)
Dear Diary,
Sorry to have neglected you these last few weeks but life has been hectic.
Roxette, fresh from her trip on the Jolly Roger, has now adopted some new Nigella Lawson complex. Still, can’t be all bad, as it means she is spending most of her time where most women belong, namely, the kitchen, so I can get the telly back in time for the resumption of the Champions League.
Speaking of evening football, must share with you the miracle I saw down the Emirates on Monday. Never thought I would see it – some said it would never be done again. But I can claim to be one of the privileged few…..
I was there, when Trev,
sank a full pint
*initiates one-two with Lars*
*runs from box and heads it in*
And celebrates with Andy Goram.
Ollie, yellow card for self-assisting with alter ego π
Depends which Andy Goram scored :p
This is a vindication of the more direct style of football our fans have been calling for…Nice one Andy Goram..
Two ~Andy Goram’s, there’s only two Andy Gorams…two Andy Goraaams…
Wind @ 80:
Prologue to the story: Several years later I was talking about it to my Mom and I joked “thank you for not poisoning me when you thought that I supported the scum!” She replied: “how do you know I didn’t try!”
Holic – Once again, top post and once again, I can only regret not watching these legends you speak of.
The 80k/w Cahill has received from Chelsea means Theo will ask for at least 100k/w (regardless if he deserves it or not) since he has CL experience, a full international and attacking players usually get more than defenders, and most importantly – Homegrown.
All these will factor into his request.
It’s rather unbelievable that a player with no CL experience has just signed an 80k/w contract.
Zico @ 98 Jolly Roger? Very clever wee lad.
Snir,
Look on the bright side – Cahill isn’t much better than Sideshow Bob, judging by Bolton’s defence this season.
Maybe we dodged a bullet, there?
Zico – We did dodge a bullet. I was never impressed whenever I saw him.
But this was actually not about Cahill, but the consequences on the negotiations with Theo.
I understand that Snir, and I agree – it doesn’t help our cause in that sense.
I know it’s all down to interpretation , but in my book , that has to be a red , and a two game ban .
Self assisting and simulation all in one go .
On a more serious note , don’t let the bastards grind you down Ollie .
Dr F @98 – π
Trev , Mr C and Dr Z – Wolfie cannot currently respond . He has gone to his friends , Gordon and Nigel , for a Leather and Lace evening , mysteriously entitled “Hide and Streak” π
I don’t know who will suffer more from the ACN.
Arsenal or my FFL team – AFCMTA !!!
Cahill ? no impact on Theo’s situation at all in my book .
Why not Tabs?
ABB hoist it high!;)
Good point Snir re Ht league. Going to make a substitution!!
Are you casting to see what might take the bait, Mr tabs?
Or does it have no impact because Theo is going to remain a mixed bag of unfulfilled potential? π

lets face it, Cahill has Wenger to thank. He was the first manager to show an interest in him and that was few years ago. since then I watched him and i still don’t know why Wenger likes him. Yes his passing is good but defensively I would say he is ordinary and this is the reason top clubs are not queueing up for him despite his low transfer fee.
Glasgow Reporter π π
Snir , Dr Z – maybe i was being a little bit truculent π
Obviously it might have a bearing on what Theo asks for , but I’m not sure how relevant it will be to how much he actually gets .
1. Cahill 4 months away from being able to go for free .
2. Walcott will either sign a new contract in the summer or be sold a la Nasri . He will therefore command a higher transfer fee which will impact on his wages .
3. Not sure that either Chelsea or Man City ( the clubs who pay stupid money ) will want him . City are well covered in the position , and he doesn’t strike me as a Villas-Boas type player . I think the biggest suitors will be Liverpool , Theo’s team . Unlikely they would offer considerably more in wages than us , and are more unlikely to be able to offer Champs League Football .
4. Theo could of course elect to sit his contract out but that would be a dangerous game to play with AOC sitting in the wings . If he finds himself out of favour , he would more than likely not play for the National team and thus lose his international football endorsements . I would be surprised if Theo went down that road .
The case rests M’lud .
Tabs – it’s ok π
1. That has nothing to do with Theo though. The fact that Cahill got 80k/w for 5 years is astonishing since he doesn’t tick any of the boxes except for being English.
2. He will actually command a lower transfer fee because of his short contract. Nasri was different because it’s City and they wanted to beat United to the punch.
3. I’m pretty sure (not 100% though) that Chelsea was interested in the summer.
4. AW won’t let Theo sit the contract out.
I also think that AA will be sold in January to make room for a signing and AOC will get his chance.
We already have to release a player to make room for TH in the 25 list, and that will probably be Squillaci with Monaco interested. I don’t think Almunia will leave in this window because with Fabianski injured and Mannone on loan, I don’t see AW releasing his 3rd GK.
Meaning that in order to sign someone (and it sounds as if AW is looking to sign a LB), AW needs to release someone.
I have a strong feeling it would be AA.
Unlikely that would pass as news in Glasgow, Clive.
Well, maybe the doll. π
Following on from that Snir, did you notice Arsene today saying that he was “confident” Ox would play more now…. As if it depended on something. At the time I thought it was odd. Maybe he meant he was confident AA would be sold?
Mysterioser and mysterioser
And then he releases this bit of news
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-arshavin-still-an-efficient-player
π
But then again, he ruled out selling Eduardo a couple of days before selling him.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-chamakh-won-t-be-sold-in-january
WHY NOT !??!? Fiorentina want him. And seriously want him.
Just sell the dude. It doesn’t matter that we don’t have cover for RvP. Chamakh isn’t cover. Afobe has no experience but with the way that Chamakh is playing right now, Afobe will do a better job.
@ Glasgow Reporter:
Hypothetically speaking, say a friend of mine was at the village by mistake and lost some items like a prosthetic limb and a toupee (assuming its filed under wigs) where – hypothetically would my friend go to collect such items?
Snir ,
1. Don’t agree . Spurs had a bid of double what Chelsea have paid , rejected on the last day of the transfer window in August . Whatever we all therefore think of Cahill as a player (and I, like you , don’t particularly rate him) , Chelsea are getting him “on the cheap” , and this has therefore impacted on the wages that he has asked for (120k) and received (80k) .
2.Don’t agree . Players with one year to go (Walcott) still go for very high transfer fees , depending on the buying club’s need . This is evident in the transfers of many more than just Nasri . Players with 4 months to go (cahill) , rarely if ever command much of a fee . The only reason Bolton got as much as they did was that Chelsea’s need was great , given the fall out with Alex , injuries , and their at times woeful defending .
3. Unless you are on speaking terms with either AW , Villas Boas or Theo himself , your contention is nothing more than an opinion based on the usual press guff . Let’s just say you have a much higher regard for tabloid and internet bollocks than I do . The source of any speculation might have come from anywhere ( mischievous journo , agent etc ) , and the reasons for it manifold .
4. If Theo wants to sit out his contract , there is nothing AW or anyone else can do about it . As I have said before , I would be surprised if Theo went down this road .
Tabs – Don’t get me wrong, I know that Chelsea are “getting him on the cheap” especially with Bolton asking for 17m in the summer, but I do think that it gives Theo and other Englishmen looking for new contracts some “cards” to hold.
2. I don’t know of a lot of players who go for a lot of money in their last contract, but that might be possible, don’t know if it is, so won’t comment on it.
3. Like I said, I think, I don’t know, I think, meaning I’ve heard/read.
4. Kroenke/AW will sell him before he decides to sit it out. If he decides to reject any approach from any team in order to sit out the contract, I’d be like you, very very surprised.
Zico @ 98, it indeed was a momentous occasion, I wasn’t there personally to witness it, but tales of it will be told down the generations π
Well I know the assist from Ollie at 99 was meant for the miracle wallet man, but Well in Andy Goram! (Or was it you, Andy Goram? ‘Raises eyebrow’
GT @ 105, π gimme a minute to recover from this bout of laughing mate ‘wheezes and hacks’
A gooner through and through your mum π
All this talk about Theo. Is there any evidence that he actually wants to leave Arsenal and will attempt to run down his contract?
GT @ 126 Good luck!
GT – We’re just talking about possibilities.
As for Sunday.
Am I the only one who thinks that Swansea’s home defensive record is being overplayed?
Look at opponents.
Wigan 0-0
Sunderland 0-0
WBA 0-0
Stoke 2-0
Bolton 3-1
Man U 0-1
Villa 0-0
Fulham 2-0
QPR 1-1
Spurs 1-1
True – Some very good results, but out of all these fixtures, I would have expected them to lose only to Spurs and United.
And before anybody jumps the gun, yes I know we conceded to these teams, but I’m not saying we’re a better defensive team than Swansea.
I’m saying that people are making it seems as if it will be impossible for us to score on Sunday. Their defense is good, but not unbreakable.
@ 129
At the moment, Wind, we only have Feelgood’s word for it – he’s been known to suffer from reality distortion π
Glasgow News Reporter @ 117, excellent ending.
GT @ 126, hmm… π ‘raises eyebrow’
What’s all this hysteria about Theo? He’s a smart kid and AW loves him, doubt he will be going anywhere. He should know it would be career suicide at this point.
I also doubt we’ll be seeing Arshavin going anywhere (at least at this point in time) unless Podolski really is coming in January.
Anyway, we should talk about what’s really important….Gunder & Lightning opening up a 3 point lead in the HT League π
Seems like we might have a left back from Oman playing for us soon…
Anybody know who he is?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2086419/Saad-Al-Mukhaini-arrives-Arsenal-trial.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
What a wonderful thread, a great start by Holic and terrific tidbits by Ned, Ricey and Clive. They were men in those times, the balls were likely twice the weight of what they are now so his fingers must have stung more than once!
@Snir: Theo has been an Arsenal fan since he was a boy. Arsenal is the club of his dreams and he is proud of the shirt like no one else at the club. You’d think at a time everyone complains about the mercenary mentality of football players his love for the club would warrant him some respect but if anything it shows you that the c*nts on his back are just that. Arsenal supporters my arse.
Matt
Just because Theo loves the shirt and has been a boyhood follower of the Arse, does not entitle him to a free pass if after 5/6 yrs at the Club, his ‘End Product’ still leaves a lot to be desired.
Supporters are entitled to put their hand up and question Theo’s continued inability to make a difference in the ‘Final Third’,on a more than regulary intermittent basis.
This doesn’t make us Cunts.
As long as questions are asked in a intelligent way,Supporters are entitled to raise them.
His Supporters are then afforded the opportunity to refute the questions raised over his abilities in the same reasoned manner.
That’s what Holic’s Bar is there for.
Cheers
The Sweeper.
Wise and venerable Mr Sweeper. ‘nods vigourously’
Clive I must say I’m disappointed that you took it personally. From all the discussions we’ve had over the years I’d thought you’d know better.
As for the cunts who have been on his back since he joined us that’s what they are. Don’t remember you were one of them.
There’s 2 reasons I’ve been taking some distance, the first is that I’m overworked and the second is well summarized by Tim Stillman in his post from a couple days ago: “Supporters are guilty of forgetting the point of the pursuit in the first place. We live in a time when a 1-1 draw in a pre season friendly can produce sustained heckling and booing. A victory for your local rivals in a match your team has no participation in invites the acid tongued prophets of doom, astride their social networking soapbox. Victories are written off with an expectant shrug, mere numbers on a screen.”
I enjoy tremendously watching Arsenal games. I understand many are frustrated but I’m not most of the time this season. Finally we have a team that bar a few exceptions is made of players who give it all for the love of the club and for the exceptions my wish for them to be replaced is about to be granted. For all the others I’m grateful as I am for Holic who provides us with a safe haven, one of the last men standing.
Called me old-fashioned all you want but I hope you see my point. Society evolves, players are nothing like Jack Kelsey and his bare hands, supporters are nothing like the roaring crowds we remember and the times are uncertain but to me watching Arsenal remains roughly as enjoyable as it was 20, 10 or 5 years ago.
Time for Swansea to sing their swan song with Theo to score a brace. Go Theo and up the Arse!
CoR – nobody is hysteric.
Why is it that every debate is seen as hysteric? We’re just talking about what could happen. No hysteria involved.
Matt- before I get to the main point of your post I just have to say that you’re wrong and you’re making others have a wrong idea of the truth with your claims.
Theo was not an Arsenal fan from childhood. He was a Liverpool fan and his biggest idol, more than TH was Michael Owen. It’s one of the easiest things to find online since he admits it every other interview, including ones on ATVO.
About what you said, I sure hope you don’t mean people in this bar. Granted, there are a lot of people I disagree with about various issues but to say any one of the regulars here is a non supporting Arsenal cubt is a crime.
like the Tim Stillman quote Matt – will have to check him out
Actually Matt@140 fine words all round old son. A bit o’ balance and context and all that.
A breath of fresh air on this fine sunny southern morning –
you really shouldn’t stay away so long next time.
Ewww to be ah Goonah!
Morning All
Great piece of writing again ‘Holic plus the one on Arsenal Collective. Jack K was before my time.
My more limited memory always defaults to Sir Bob of Wilson as our greatest ever GK with Lord David of Seaman a close second. Young Wojciech has the potential to be considered in the same breath but let’s give it a five years or so before passing that judgement.
Looking forward to The Swans preview.
COYG and come on Mr.Frimpong thios afternoon. A Wolfish draw would be a good thing for us.
Wolfie? Are you wearing your bushy tail this afternoon as a show of support for one of your ‘favourite managers’? π
Dr.F @ #98 – Heh re: Dr.T’s ‘bender’ π
Clive – When did The Sweeper become a roving reporter? Great stuff.
Matt – Good to see you back in here. Regaring Theo, I’ve generally been a big fnn of his improved game this season, he’s had some really good games for us. Chelski away sticks in the mind. Only his recent return to inconsistency frustrates.
NBN – Great Pathe clips at @ #28, cheers!
Sunny and cold.
Better than the recent mild and wet, I guess.
Morning TS – on the goalkeeping front big Pat on the back for Mr. Jennings for me.
I still remember the massive shock of him signing from s***s. They thought he was passed it and we kept ’em crossed that he wasn’t.
In one early game, when he was a bit slow off his line, we all worried that they might be right. But he went on to be brilliant.
One save he made against the almost unbeatable liverpool in an FA cup semi actually seemed to turn the whole tie in our favour, sucking belief from them and feeding it to our lot in exchange.
There’s also a great moment in the ’79 cup-final when big Pat catches a corner and chins the front-toothless Joe Jordan in one move. Jordan (now at s***s of course – and – ahem, so’s Pat i think, oh well you can’t win ’em all) couldn’t quite work out what had literally just hit him – and how.
Every great save he made (and there were many); every great game he had (and there were loads) and every great season he completed (and there were plenty) was a sweetly placed kick up the footballing knackers of that mob up there.
And he could, and did, catch the ball one-handed. And i met him once on my birthday at Luton airport and along with chippy he signed the back of my nan’s cheque book, and took the time out to give the over-excited schoolboy in front of him a few words in that impressively soft-spoken basso profondo of his.
The man was a class act all round.
Up The Arse!
Afternoon AL – Yes, big Pat a legend too. Even as a schoolboy, the chance to wind-up my LWC schoolmates when he moved was not wasted. He played some terrific games for us and saved many a point but Bob will always be my favourite. We did the double with him between the sticks he was never ‘polluted’ with a history of playing for that small club down the road π
Ok, have Frimpong to score and Wolves to win 1-0 at 500-1.
Also Frimpong to score first and 1-1 at 225/1.
Couple of fun bets for the day.
Glasgow Morning News – heh!
tabs@119: spot on, methinks. Theo is not in that great a bargaining position as one might initially think.
‘Holic@149: but what are the odds of Frimpong frimponging someone? π
Fair point TS – and of course his middle name is Primrose – which must count for something, though not sure what.
think I must have seen a bit of BPW live but can’t honestly remember it.
Then there was Jimmy Rimmer (which i believe is a criminal offence these days), who i remember being a fan of because of he flung himself about the box quite athletically – and i think wore a cap quite a bit. As BPW did when it got sunny, of course. Keepers don’t that so much these days do they?
Sleeves rolled down, caps off gloves on
Nice odds ‘holic. Wonder if there are odds on a Frimpong win double: Getting the first goal and collecting a red.
We know Frimpong likes a dingdong, and it’s against them and ‘e’ll have Mick Mac’s approach to the beautiful game ringing in his ears – ding ding, round one – come out growling.
Of course i hope the young man approaches the game in a mature and thoughtful fashion and so accelerates his current rate of progression for the good of Arsenal football club and himself – but you never know.
Go on my son!
Snir @128 ,
1. Partially , but every individual situation is different , and I maintain that whatever Cahill earns has little impact on Theo’s situation .
2. Nasri alone proves the point . As long as the player is in demand , buying clubs will still pay top dollar to jump the queue , AND get him in at the start of the season . The depreciation of Cahill’s value also shows how much more Clubs are prepared to pay with one year left as opposed to a few months .
3.”I’m pretty sure” is what you said . Rather stronger than “I think” . Even if what you meant was “I think” , I was merely asking you to consider on what evidence that thought was based . It could only ever be based on journo supposition and gossip , a source which I would contend is rather unreliable for you to proclaim things with such certainty ( see also your comment in regard to Chamakh @125 ) .
4.” Kroenke/AW will sell him before he decides to sit it out. ”
With respect , your statement doesn’t make any sense . They can’t sell him against his will , or before he has “decided ” .
Canons @135 – Congrats on your top of the league status . I note that whilst your team is perhaps cleaner than those arch Barbarians , Holic and 8Ball , (the Pulis and Mccarthy of FFL π ) , your team is far from pure . Wolfie’s not bitter though . π
TS – Wolfie coming out today very much in favour of the thick dipshit Mccarthy . π
Holic – 2 great bets . Think you might be bang on , on the score . Have to say that i doubt our young tyro will score , but you never know . Hope he makes you rich !
Lars , afternoon and Cheers .
AL @151 “Then there was Jimmy Rimmer (which i believe is a criminal offence these days), ”
Heh π
Apart from regular first team football, I personally can’t see what Frimpong can possibly gain playing for a side managed by bent-nosed McCarthy, he’s a fucking dinosaur.
I never heard of that man Kelshey
ta tabs and it’s quite true too i think – or at least it’s something you have to pay a, erm – professional good money for i reckon
And Zico @ 1555 at the very least he’ll learn to love what he already has a little more – a la future cap’n jack and Bolton – maybe.
And fighting for a result (in the right way) can’t do him much harm hopefully.
And re the old bent-nosed fighter of lost causes being a dinosaur – there’s one called an alamosaurus – hold that fort!
I’ll get my mac!
BBC website: Frimpong booked for taking out Bale.
My comment: Naturally. He’s like a trained Doberman when it comes to taking out Spuds.
Halftime and part of ‘holic’s punt looking good. 1-Nil against Spuds.
π π
Whoops that was holiday haste getting the best of me. Above post by bt8bbgfg not bt8bbnn
When I said hysteria I meant recently a lot of gooners and journalists in the media have been going on about Theo and RVP and their contracts, trying to speculate on their dealings and loyalty etc and until we get more information I just feel like discussing what a player may or may not do is a wasted effort.
I never said every debate is hysteric though π
But at best we can only speculate what will happen and until it comes to pass I just want to enjoy the ride while getting as drunk as possible π
Frimponged!
Okay men, Liverpool and Spuds draw….there are points to be gained tomorrow. C’mon you REDS!
Just got Darren Fletcher in my FFL team this week.. So double the celebrations… π
for the record Zico wasn’t @ 1555 – though there’s still time afore the ‘holic’s swans review
Tabs – I said they won’t let him unless he decides to reject any team that has an agreement with Arsenal.
Then they have no say π
Thank you Wolves.
didn’t see game but just heard Emmanuel Adybeenbetterwemight’avekept’im had a “goal” wrong disallowed for offside
“The linesman was a Gooner!”
Well, two dropped points for the spuddies and for Liverpool too. Bendtner had a great chance to make it 1-1 v Chelsea right at the end but missed it. A win tomorrow is perhaps not a must but would be very, very important.
Lars – Why am I not surprised?
And so, while I was working (I’m keeping some for tomorrow) the mighty Spuds destroyed the Wolves.
No? Oh.
Lars, 166, he probably imagined that he was playing against Barça.
Chance to close some gap tomorrow, Arsenal
He probably did, Ollie.
Come on Arsenal!
pardon – wronglilililiywhitec@nts disallowed – yee haaa!
We have to capitalize this time. Can’t draw everytime our opponents drop points.
pardon – preview
Am with you SG no more draws for The Arse!
Spurs are finally first at something. First to concede 1000 goals in the premier league.
Now, that is funny!
Afternoon all, just back from my first cycle ride of the year and thawing nicely.
Clive W@49:
I love your comment about life revolving around the old stadium, I used to have an embroidery factory in Essex Road and every day I would make a detour just to see her (a full round the stadium tour).
I’m like you, my heart and my football soul remain at Highbury. Unlike you I tried the new stadium, I had a couple of season tickets for the first four years but found it soulless and for this gooner the experience was no longer the same, the magic defintely stayed at Highbury. Nowadays I attend very few matches and watch every match either on tv or live in the pub.
Neil C@61:
The Final Salute, that Henry hat trick, walking the satirs before the game for the final time, just so emotional. Arsenal and Highbury were the one constant in my life, I’ll always remember that magical feeling on the opening home game of the season where I would race up the stairs of the West stand and climb the bulkhead excitedly in anticipation of seeing the immaculate pitch for the first time, a carpet of bright green…..(sigh). You’re right it was pure elation.
‘holic@149: 225-1, right score, wrong scorer, such a shame π
Geoff, There are some, like myself who would give just about anything to be at the Emirites and cheer Arsenal on. This year’s squad means so much to me and now, more then ever they need our undivided support. Just to be there and hear (and feel) the roar of the crowd, priceless.
Fine reminiscence ‘Holic. Most enjoyable for those of us whose Arsenal memories don’t go so far back – for one reason or another!
A nice glass of Macallan for the barman to warm his cockles on this chilly night.
Jack Kelsey was my uncles friend when they were growing up. Whenever he came home (in his Arsenal car) he’d come and watch us playing football down the fields. It was the only time we’d fight over who was going in goal.
Can’t wait for tomorrow.
C’mon the Swans! x
SG@176
Good shout. Didn’t know that. The press made the point here that we are only 4 short of 700. Those Lilywhite lovers in the BBC and Sportspages of the UK will not be trumpeting THAT statistic, I bet.
This makes me smile.
They love him, and from what they say, he had a massive performance today at the shithole.

ArsabeatBarca@178
Well said!
Great detective work Snir, may I ask you….does life outside of The Arsenal exist for you? π
Geoff, it does, but it includes other forms of sports π
SG@182
Great link.
He’ll learn his trade well under McCarthy and get good experience keeping Wolves up.
Nice Snir π
BBC Sports says: Tottenham have now drawn three of their last six Premier League matches.
Cracks beginning to show?
GT – They are getting lots of draws but problem is, so are we!
We have to capitalize.
Just have to.
Let’s hope so, GoonerTerry.
Boatbarboy: your post started so well and then you went and put your foot in it there with your last line π
You’re right Snir, we simply have to win tomorrow. Whilst a draw wouldn’t be a disaster it’s not going to be good enough if we want to put pressure on Chelsea and have designs on catching Sp*rs.
GT: They are playing out of their skins and have been all season. As the games countdown though they will find themsleves in an unfamiliar position and the pressure will undoubtably increase. I certainly didn’t expect them to drop points today.
All we can do is approach each game positively, starting with 3 points tomorrow.
Lovely Highbury memories Geoff. My last game there was the Champs league semi v sevilla – which for was apt as most of my early games there were night ones ‘cos the bloke that first took me to Highbury played himself on a Saturday afternoons.
I went on a whim (a number 12) turned up without a ticket and still got in, in a manner i won’t post (i’ll tell you in the pub). Nothing sinister – just a little cheeky.
Afterwards wandered around the Northbank with lots of other Goonahs. Everyone i met had mixed feelings – watching our lot was never gonna be the same again – but the future looked good.
We took photos for one another with one another’s phones, shook hands, and some shed a tear or two and said good-bye to that beautiful, elegant old ground with it’s miles of attendant memories.
Nice link work SG – only you could pull that one orf!
tposy – has nothing to do with bere
TABs @ 153: Wolfie is coming out? How very liberating. Wonderful! We should all support him/her at such a vulnerable time…but what has dipshit McCartney has to do with it – or don’t I want to know?
GoonerTerry receives a lovely pass from Frimpong, controls with his chest and play it first time into the path of the onrushing…
Hey AL: I look forward to hearing your cheeky story next time we’re @ The Tollie.
Don’t you mean Villareal though?
Kicking Chimp boy?
Blowing kisses to the Spuds fans?
Tut tut, Mr Frimpers, that really won’t do.
*school boy snigger* π
Ooh fantastic cross, someone HAS to get on the end of that…..
…and continues his run into the 18-yard box..
Shoots…..
heads for goal!!!
taps
off – well in Geoff
Well in Geoff – glad you weren’t put off by my flying dive which completely bamboozled their keeper…
seems like you got on to the end of your own cross AND avoided the self-assist – top work
π
* Lays on living room floor, arms outstretched Charlie George style*
Oops was it villareal Geoff – the one where jens saved a penalty it was
And nice dummy/dive GT
Geoff scores and goes red an’ all – now that’s just showing orf, surely
Well in, Geoff.
AL @ 205: No he simply said it was an amazing cross – he didn’t say he crossed it! But what a strike force we are developing…goals can come fhom anywhere..
GT – have you ever considered the legal profession/PR etc?
As there’s a certain Dr. Feelgood on here who might be able to use a fellow like yourself
I remember your Team turning up to play Winch Wen of the Swansea Senior League in the early 90’s .
George Graham brought a youthful team and the only first team player was Paul Hillier as captain. Arsenal were 9-0 up at half time, against Winch Wens first team . Second half Winch Wen put their reserve team on and the final score was 16-0 and the 2500 or there abouts crowd were shouting Boring Boring Arsenal cause they didn’t let Winch Wen get a goal LOL.
Great Memories :))
GT, you saw it right? What a cross, it deserved a cracking finish, thankfully your diving header distracted the goalie just long enough for my daisy cutter to trickle over the line.
AL, NBN, thanks guys, I keep saying this is a team game, it’s not all about who puts the ball in the net.
Lee@213: You may remember the team but the only Hillier I can remember was David. And if any valuables went missing from the dressing room there was only person you could point the finger at π
And what’s the secret of your recent redness Geoff. If you want to save that for the Tollie i can understand – BUT would be surprised if you don’t want to let all the lads who just helped you score a beauty in on your secret!!?!?!
David “can i carry your case” Hillier. Did he end up at chelski – or was it battersea?
Or was it Wormwood scrubs?
By the by there was a s***s fan on 606 tonight moaning that frimpong went around bullying them before bemoaning the fact that “as much as i hate ’em” Arsenal play good football whereas teams like wolves come to shite cart lane and don’t.
They just can’t themselves – praising us/talking about us even when they’re getting a wee go in the spotlight
UREDS (especially Geoff – the reddest of them all)!
Hillier ended up in Bristol as a fireman.
i’m sure you’re more accurate than me Geoff. In my befuddled brain he’s a former midfield terrier that lost his way – so the dogs’ home for him
Valuables then women and children first
lol. and marching powder.
Rumors doing the rounds that Arteta is injured for tomorrow and possibly Man U as well.
I really don’t know who’ll fill in for him.
TR hasn’t trained all week.
Maybe AA in the hole, AR a bit deeper and TH on the wing?
He will play Benny in Artetas place.
Well placed shot, Geoff, quality finish!
Bloody Hell
Just looked to see who The GT rollers have drawn in the cup.
Away (again, thanks Holic) against the Down Under Gunners.
Please stand up. Manager Mr Darragh Murray (Good Aussie name), and account for your Three (3) Manure players, and Two (2) Spuds.
I haven’t got the energy to mention Enrique of Liverpool.
Yes, you’ve got 30 points already, compared to our 8. But do you feel clean? Do you?
Booooo……. π
Andy – i’m all for folk being given second chances once they’ve sorted themselves out – but was DH really allowed to be a fireman after that lot
Rumours has us signing half the planet.
I wouldn’t listen to rumours, Snir.
T’was on Arsenal TV sir. Honest.
Steeevie Williams was a property developer in Plymouth.
Cannot remember too many others.
Sorry “help themselves” – rather like David Hillier used to before he sorted himself out.
Artetetettaaaa! Out – really? That’s a blow – if so like Andy reckon Benny might get the nod
CG – My opponent (Here we go again) has
Bale (!!!!!!!!!), Adebayor (!!!!!!!!!!!!), Walker, Welbeck, O’Shea, Huth, Bellamy and Mata.
Only normal players he has are Silva, Al-Habsi and Enrique.
But in Ramsey’s spot with Rambo dropping deeper like SG said
Cheers Ollie!
Nice work Andy – stevie williams elbowed/talked his way into the property business – figures.
By the way liked him a lot – thought he was a bit underrated really.
Like this ‘Former Gunners – what they’re up to now game’. I’ve heard Big Willy Young is a bingo caller just outside of Arbroath – honest
Jon Sammels (driving instructor in Leicester) but unwell last time I heard anything.
Before anybody goes crazy.
I didn’t make up the rumor. It’s something I saw.
I’m just writing it here so you’ll see it too.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It’s all right, we have Coquelin who can play in midfield.
