Thierry Henry, Lonely At The Top: A Review

Nov 7th, 2012 by 'holic

Think you have read everything about Thierry Henry? Think again. The release of Philippe Auclair’s biography provides 336 pages that build slowly into a tome that grips, defies you to put it down.

It is not your typical life story sprinkled with stardust. This is a ‘warts and all’ journey through the life of one of the most remarkable men ever to pull on the red of Arsenal and the blue of France. It provides the background to the selfish and spiky nature of the man himself as well as charting his progress from childhood prodigy, driven by his father, to the very top of the game.

At both ends of the book there is reference to the 2010 World Cup, and Thierry’s contribution both in qualifying and in the aftermath of the striking French controversy. Thierry as villain is there along with all of the moments when he was clearly anything but. Relive the World Cup and European Championship medals, his patchy form with Monaco and failure at Juve before his blossoming under Arsene Wenger.

“Few modern footballers progress from miscast to top of the bill as swiftly as Henry.”

The double in 2002, the invincibles in 2004, the record-breaking goalscoring exploits, all are presented from numerous interviews, trustworthy sources, and Philippe’s own personal observations and recollections.

The triumphs are well chronicled, as is the parting of the ways when Titi moved to Barcelona. There is a moment as you reach the end of the journey that you feel down that the tale will end in sadness in the aftermath of that 2010 World Cup. Luckily we know there is a postscript to all this. The return of the King and that goal against Leeds United. You leave the final page exhausted, but lifted.

At the end you should have a better understanding of the nature of the genius, and perhaps some of the reasons for his moods, and the infamous Henry glare. You will also have a comprehensive record of a player who inspired never ending love and devotion at Highbury and the Grove. A true legend it was a privilege to witness in his pomp.

It isn’t what I expected at all, and it is all the better and more informative for that. Thank you Philippe.

So Who Has Won A Copy?

The management has pulled the infamous packs of ‘holic cards out to reveal Jonathan Hausmann as the winner. Congratulations Jonathan. The book will be in the post tomorrow lunchtime.

Jonathan correctly identified our friends and neighbours as the visiting fans in front of whom Thierry was celebrating one of the all time great Arsenal goals after running the length of Highbury.

The book is published on Thursday, so tomorrow/today/yesterday depending on where you are and when. Those looking for a cracking Christmas read can buy the book by clicking on the Amazon link in the sidebar. You won’t be disappointed.

Thank you all for your entries and kind words. Come back on Friday evening for the Fulham preview.

Cheers ‘holics.

I take it that Philippe Auclair book is in French, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

I didn’t even have a chance to compete for that book, the competition was badly timed (or too short) for the travelling Gooners ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cut off in the last drinks again. This cannot be coincidence, FACT !!!!!!!

And i go forth too. congrats to mr. Hausmann. Sounds a decent read ‘h, ta.

Sounds like a great read, ‘holic

    =====

    Trev, from previous drinks.

I indeed remember when we were “interested” in Will-I-an. I thought it had more to do with the fact that we’d played Shaged her Donuts (or whatever they’re called) a few times more then any real interest. He seems to be chumy with AvB and has confessed a love for the Chavs lately, so we can’t be having any of that.

ps I too thought TV was well below par (again) yesterday, highlighted by my “trouble on the left” thingymibit.

  11. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:02 pm11Ollie

heh Trev. And you wouldn’t have been a lone voice if I’d been around ๐Ÿ˜‰

Off to Amazon it is then – via the link, of course.

The competition was rigged, clearly. ๐Ÿ˜‰
    A hanging chad?
    Voter intimidation?
    Ballot box stuffing?
Bah, I guess I’ll have to buy it to read on the plane.

    Congrats to the winner.

Unlucky Trev (psed when you write it like that it sorta sounds not unlike F*cked, no? apt – FACT!!!)

  16. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:06 pm16Lars

Trev, I could have sworn I commented on Vermaelen as well but maybe I forgot it. In any case I agree, he was bloody awful. He needs to find his form again pretty sharpish.

By the way, the question in 6 is not completely silly.
The book is published on Thursday, so tomorrow/today/yesterday depending on where you are and when.

Is the original version in French (and if so, was it out already? Or published at the same time in French and English?) ?

  21. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:08 pm21Goonerholic

It’s very reasonably priced at Amazon, Ollie ๐Ÿ˜‰

Lars @16 – no, I think you just swore. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  23. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:10 pm23Ollie

Oh bollocks, I thought the Bus Stop did 2-2 but I’ve just seen the cunts have score a last minute goal.

Gutted. You know, if it had been a choice, I’d rather Barรงa won and Cuntski lost …..

  24. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:11 pm24Goonerholic

Oh, and the version I have is most definitely in English. In fact, according to Brian Glanville on the flycover, Philippe’s “English puts most native writers to shame”.

  25. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:13 pm25Ollie

Amazon suggests the book is only English. I say weird.

Yep, ‘holic. Excellent trip, not so good for the head and the liver.

Copious amounts of alcohol were ingested, and mahoosive amounts of chanting was done.

Gelsenkirchen is a bit of a shithole though (are they the Spurs of the Ruhr Valley?), town is dead, stadium miles out, and well, the atmosphere isn’t quite Dortmund either.

Drinks were incredibly cheap though ๐Ÿ˜‰

AL@17, that Neville moment was nothing compared to Henry’s goal ๐Ÿ™‚

When you read it Ollie I suspect you will appreciate they might not have considered that it would sell well in France.

  28. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:18 pm28Trev

    You’ll love this Ollie –

In the press yesterday: ” Abramovich will not be held to ransom over Willian, and is refusing to pay the ยฃ45million asking fee.”

Well Roman, who was it that started driving transfer fees up to bonkers levels. What a twat. Clearly he thought Torres at ยฃ50 million was a bargain then.

  29. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:21 pm29And Lester

Watched Shaktar (at times) shredding that lot tonight. Good team, good game.

psed – don’t like knocking our own, but agree: TV don’t seem all that switched on at the mo. Is even losing aerial battles. Sometimes more use to the other side just now. Maybe doing the programme notes is taking it out of him. And he needs to forget working the channels going forward, or risk being dropped – which might then shatter his confidence of course. Watch this space, i reckon.

  30. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:28 pm30Trev

    AL,

Funny how TV can’t win an aerial battle. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  31. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:30 pm31Trev

Sorry, just realised you already had that one. ๐Ÿ™

    And one or two others…..

  32. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:30 pm32takeabowson

Nice one Holic. We all know the triumphs, but I’d be interested to read about the “dark side”.

My old seat was in the East stand at Highbury, so I had a pretty good view of some of those looks Thierry used to give Reyes, when we were attacking the Clock End. “Cold” doesn’t do them justice, they made me flinch many rows back. I know Reyes didn’t always help himself, but Thierry’s treatment pretty much ruined him at Arsenal imo. All stemmed from that incident with the Spanish manager I think.

  33. on 07 Nov 2012 at 10:31 pm33And Lester

Reckon that hits the, ermm – button Trev

Where you get the time to read, is beyond me ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyway, quick shout out to our latest birthday boy, the esteemed Rev. Al ๐Ÿ™‚ Ollie, glad you’re back at the bar, you are our ‘jukebox’ ๐Ÿ™‚ Trev, from last set of drinks, agree that Arteta playing forward might add some spice. Joe,

Meh, don’t really like either of our choices. Our political system is very screwed up right now. Too polarized. It’s either the far left or far right. I’m a more middle of the road kinda guy. Agree with some issues on both sides. However, our two parties have decided not to play nice with each other so all we get is arguing and lots of inaction to the detriment of everyone. Lets just hope that changes and we get a functioning federal government.

So as other teams are developing the false 9 thing, to keep everybody happy (or at least those that want to play up top) is poor old AW gonna have to develop The Force 9 thing – whereby a small team within the team take up the centre-forward position #PipeDownAndGetOnWithTheJobOfWinningGamesForArsenalLads

No, I’m not joking. Think about it – he’s got pretty much every ability you want from a centre-forward. Big, strong, quite a fast runner, good in the air, has a good shot and does seem to have an eye for finding scoring opportunities.

Do you mean there wasn’t the right number of players in the initial list and no-one noticed, Nonny? :s

  94. on 08 Nov 2012 at 3:33 pm94Wind

Can only be good for Jenks in terms of game time now that’s Sagna’s back I think Nonny, only 2 more CL Tuesday/Wednesday matchdays left that can happen after a Saturday/Sunday game so the need for rotation between him & Sagna will lessen, don’t want Carl losing the form he gained over the last few months & a friendly would be a great start for his England Career as he starts out at 3rd choice right-back or so.

Ollie @ 97/98, I’m not sorted yet :(, I saw your drink about the swathes of tickets in all four Ends for Arsenal vs Fulham and I’m wondering what the best course of action would be now, take you up on your offer or wait until after the Fulham game to see what appears. A win may result in less, a draw or loss in more, no idea but still hoping for a home win this Saturday! I know the cheapest is ยฃ62 for the game but the odds of that showing up on Ticket exchange are quite low I would say, appreciate the ยฃ90 offer if you’re sincere ;), I’ll e-mail Clive and see what he thinks and get back to you ๐Ÿ™‚

  111. on 08 Nov 2012 at 3:54 pm111Ollie

I missed drink 78. Now I see I didn’t assist though, so no Andy Gorams, good goal H2H.

Some blazing passing move, didn’t see it, good assist NCA.

  112. on 08 Nov 2012 at 3:58 pm112Ollie

I’d say the hope of tickets is high, including ยฃ62, judging by the general Tx pattern.

I think you misread my offer though: it is still conditional to me finding another ticket which I expect to be able to. It’s just that my travel is sorted, so I cannot completely gamble on last week Tx, whereas I suspect you travelling to the game can be arranged at shorter notice ๐Ÿ˜‰

  113. on 08 Nov 2012 at 4:00 pm113Wind

    NorCal was robbed! ๐Ÿ˜†
Unlucky mate, you scored in spirit [and a 5-10 minute period of time before the former #78 was removed ๐Ÿ˜‰ ] & ended up with a nice assist ๐Ÿ™‚

Or maybe… H2H used intense Observation & anticipation to go for in this case, the real glory ‘tabs’ goal… 8)

Or Mbaye Niang, Lars. He along with the other two got banned, but ‘only’ until December 2012. I’m guessing they wanted to make more of an example of M’Vila as he had already played for the As and was supposed to be exemplary leading the U21s.

Ollie. If I were a minimally competent reader of French, I would be able to tell you why M’Vila is suspended from the France team until June 2014, but since I’m not I’ll just paste the Google Translate version of the article here. I’m taking it that mileu field Rennes means the Rennes midfielder, but I’m not really sure about that one.

“Heard Thursday morning by the Disciplinary Committee of the French Federation after their night out at the last meeting of the France team Hopes in October, Yann M’Vila (Rennes), Chris Mavinga (Rennes), Antoine Griezmann (Real Sociedad, ESP), Wissam Ben Yedder (Toulouse) and Mbaye Niang (Milan, ITA) have not been spared.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the FFF announced sanctions. “Ben Yedder, Griezmann, Mavinga and Niang are suspended from all national teams selections starting Monday, November 12, 2012 until Tuesday, December 31, 2013, reads. Yann M’Vila is suspended from all national teams selections as of Monday, November 12, 2012 until Monday, June 30, 2014. “Suffice to say that participation in the next World Cup in Brazil appears severely compromised for mileu field Rennes …”

Speaking of politics NorCal, I heard that as a result of the election taxes will soon rise for the rich in California, meaning the public schools may not have to close after all. I didn’t mean to get into anything political, mind you, just couldn’t think of much else to say.

  153. on 09 Nov 2012 at 1:42 am153NorCalArsenal

    8ball,
Yes. Taxes will rise for the rich. Also an increase in sales tax. The funny thing is there was a proposal to raise everyone’s tax to help public services and that of course failed miserably. (Tax everyone, except me….right? )
I will only be affected by the sale tax, ( i dont fit their definition of rich, yet) but then I live relatively close to Oregon where there is no sale tax.

Apart from the Arsecast and the preview that Holic has written – there is also an article linked on Tim Stillmans column on Arseblogger on an interview with Phillipe Auclair which is interesting reading, especially his take on those who criticise Wenger.

I say this in no way to try to excuse some of his team selections, substitutions, formations and decisions taken of late (which have baffled me as much as much as many of the contributors here), but in the more general context of his stewardship of the club and primarily, the consequences of opting for a self-sustaining model.

Anyway, speaking of self-sustainment, its Friday, the sun is shining and shortly I’ll be ‘preoccupied in putting glasses of stout into the interior of my body…and expressing by fine disputation, the resulting sense of physical and mental well-being’.

    Enjoy it, Joe!

    Holic @165 ๐Ÿ˜†

Abb – “Scorpios get along famously with Capricorns”

    Will he get on with me – I’m a Vegetarian ? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hello abb, no Titi did not co-operate with Philippe, but he was aware of the book and made no attempt to interfere in any way, which is rare these days.

    Tomas is back? Excellent news.

Ooh great to see him back in training, spotted Ox there too. Now the question is how far is either of them from being match ready?

    Happy Birthday Snir.

Well done Wind, might even buy you a shandy afterwards ๐Ÿ˜‰

Enjoy Joe, cheers for the heads up.

    Tomas who? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  212. on 09 Nov 2012 at 4:37 pm212Ollie

Don’t think Rosicky is ready to take part tomorrow even on the bench, Eandy, but maybe he can score against Spu*s again? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  213. on 09 Nov 2012 at 4:42 pm213Eandy

not counting with him for tomorrow at all too Ollie, but home against Tottenscum would be nice ๐Ÿ˜€

Rosie is back? Huh. That was a shorter 3 weeks than usual.

Who takes wilshere’s spot tomorrow? Ox to start?

  215. on 09 Nov 2012 at 4:47 pm215Ollie

Doubt it, NCA, he’s only at ‘fitness test’ stage.

Maybe Coq with Arteta further up.

  216. on 09 Nov 2012 at 5:15 pm216NorCalArsenal

You are probably right Ollie. Was hoping for a little injection of pace and dribbling. We have been very passive lately. No one really taking on defenders. Maybe Arteta will take a few shots from outside the box.

Well, it would be rude not to.

Hey tabs – the ideal comeuppance you spake of yesterdee for the money-laundering operation at the bridge might arrive sooner than any of us could reasonably hope for if this fellow gets his way…
