An Arsenal Writers Hangout

Feb 25th, 2013 by 'holic

Unscripted, unrehearsed, a number of Arsenal bloggers were brought together by Danny Karbassiyoon for his Soccer Without Limits, or SWOL, website. The resulting hour long videocast can be seen below. If only someone had told me we would be on screen at all times (apart from the very clever Arseblogger) then I would not have gone off to hunt for another Innis & Gunn halfway through!

A huge thanks to Sian for holding us all together and keeping us in check, and of course a huge thanks to my peers for making it fun.

    Cheers, ‘holic.

  2. on 25 Feb 2013 at 12:30 am2Goonerholic

    Yo Boz.

Great to see you, if all too briefly, yesterday.

  3. on 25 Feb 2013 at 12:34 am3Corny

Nice one Holic. You were well on the to Bristol at one point. Haha. πŸ˜‰

  4. on 25 Feb 2013 at 12:36 am4Goonerholic

I was indeed Corny. Fluids were required, instructions were not comprehensive, you know how it is πŸ˜‰

  5. on 25 Feb 2013 at 12:39 am5Goonerholic

I should point out that were it not for Corny, there would be no Goonerholic.

I owe so much to Arsenal-Land, and of course the arseurs and forumers from Arseblog.

  6. on 25 Feb 2013 at 12:52 am6Corny

Don’t be daft Holic – but seriously its been a pleasure watching Goonerholic become such a success. Always been a privalge to know its author – we’ll catch up soon.

  7. on 25 Feb 2013 at 1:27 am7scruzgooner

Excellent work, holic, though you were quieter than I expected :). A gallon of Guinness for you on the bar.

  8. on 25 Feb 2013 at 1:41 am8Boz

Bloody Hell ‘holic, can’t believe I missed a pie and a pint with you yesterday – too many people. Great webcast – have watched it through. Well done!

  9. on 25 Feb 2013 at 2:50 am9Cannons of Rhetoric

The Arseblogger is so mysterious with his voice booming forth from the inky darkness….

Great stuff Holic, caught a glimpse of the vid, will continue watching on my lunchbreak.
It must be great being able to write an Arsenal blog and link up with other similar individuals using the internet, as opposed to renting a venue and travelling miles.

Keep up the good work, and lets hope West Ham do the business later!

  10. on 25 Feb 2013 at 3:37 am10ArseDownUnder

Well done Holic, a very good idea and a bit of fun I imagine. It is nice to finally put faces to all of you fantastic bloggers.

  11. on 25 Feb 2013 at 7:22 am11Abuse the truth

If you replace ‘Arsenal writers’ with ‘Simpering bootlickers’ and ‘hangout’ with ‘circle jerk’ it would be an accurate title.
But I guess you ‘writers’ are entitled to some artistic license.

  12. on 25 Feb 2013 at 8:49 am12Ollie

    Mediawhoring, eh?

In other news, I’ve just arrived at work.
There really isn’t that much snow, but for some bus lines are not working nonetheless. I really don’t understand it, the roads are clear!

Had to walk from the RER station. After the 100m it’s all uphill, not a single flat section.

Needless to say, my calves are aching a bit.
Still, good for the health, eh, I guess?

  13. on 25 Feb 2013 at 8:50 am13Ollie

Hour long though? Life’s too short, sorry. πŸ˜‰ I’m sure you all said interesting things though, so congratulations.

  14. on 25 Feb 2013 at 8:52 am14Ollie

Looks like Att wanted a piece of the action too but wasn’t invited πŸ˜‰

    @13: πŸ˜€ Just make a cuppa and you’re sorted!

My guess is Abuse the truth is a jealous Sun journalist. He has the required intelligence level and an apt nom de plume.

Has anyone called ATT’s parents to let them know he’s truanting? The school bell went like an hour ago.

Further proof that the ‘buying Beckham’ marketing ploy works a treat.

It’s still a bloody circus though, what with having Ronaldo (the real one) doing the kick off.

Is Ronaldo a PSG fan? Has he got any association with the club? Nope.
Surely Ronaldo and Paris are only associated in the way he was unwell and completely fucked up at the World Cup final in 1998.

    Paris Qatar Circus. Money talks.

  20. on 25 Feb 2013 at 11:16 am20takeabowson

Played ‘H. One can’t help thinking that if Hansen, Shearer et al followed your lead, and went walkabout mid analysis to look for a beer, then MOTD would be significantly improved! πŸ™‚

No doubts either that you won the “Arsenal shirt of the evening” competition amongst your fellow bloggers.

Good three points on Saturday, patchy performance, but it’s all about the points at this stage. If the Hammers can nick something from the LWCs tonight then it will have been a very good weekend. That Chelsea are back in the mix up is great news given that Chelsea and Tottenham have still to play at the Bridge.

Great to see everyone on Saturday, and great to meet “yer man” Garsguns. Hope you can make it over again before too long.

Camberwell – First drink here for a couple of days so hearty congratulations on your recent news.

Impressive Failage – Sorry to hear about the leg.

Great to see “Could be Worse” back in the drinks.

Fine reporting from Dr Z and H2H amongst many others in the last couple of rounds of drinks.

  25. on 25 Feb 2013 at 12:30 pm25Snir Geuli

Good stuff H’, and pass it on to Sian and the guys.

There was one glaring point Elliott made where I thought to myself “argh, why don’t I have a blog, why am I not in this chat, I really wanna say something!!” and that was the point about us having no idea how to break Bayern down.

The reason for that is because their closing down is perfect. Not close to perfect, perfect! They get in your face and force you to think within a split second. Most of the time the passing lanes would be closed down and that’s why Arteta – Per was the most frequent passing combination.

Once we dribbled at them and bypassed their first line of pressing we got more into the game.

That’s what we should be doing in Germany. Play with Jack, Rosicky, Chambo, and Santi. Tell them to dribble past the pressure and create chances.

  26. on 25 Feb 2013 at 12:38 pm26Ollie

If anyone knows where the ‘hash’ symbol is on an iMac keyboard could you please let me know.

With PC crashed, I decided an iMac was the way to go.
My existing Apple id password, and email password, is very clever and has an imbedded ‘hash’.

Trouble is, the new keyboard doesn’t and, as I have forgotten the answers to my ‘security’ questions, I am stuffed.

Can’t set up my Apple id, and can’t reset the pword ‘cos I can’t enter the email pword either !

Sorry to waffle so off topic, but there are lots of clever IT types in the bar. πŸ˜‰

    Thanks, in case……

Financial results are interesting. The Mail thinks we can refinance the national debt ,the Indie thinks we are still reliant on player sales and PHW is back.
Well done PHW you’ve managed not to make an arse of yourself in the press release which is an improvement. The suggestion is we have commercial contracts which are frontloaded to give us about Β£45 million upfront which is earmarked for player sales. It doesn’t say when but it would be ironic if we were ready to buy just when players won’t join us because of no Champions League. But that won’t happen as the wheels will come off the Scum and the men from the Bus Stop. Our fellow Tottenham haters will do the biz tonight.

  70. on 25 Feb 2013 at 5:50 pm70Dr C

evening all…. Sorry for the occasion, CBA, but sounds like a few drinks are going down at least….

  71. on 25 Feb 2013 at 5:52 pm71Said it once or twice

But recent buying by Wenger does not exactly inspire confidence in his ability to spend any money he has well. Santos, Gervinho, Chamakh (no fee but large wages) to name three. No point chicking Henry, Pires or whoever down my throat as they were years ago and people can lose their judgement over time.

Bring in someone to do they buying and selling and someone to coach the team, leaving Wenger as manager in title only, with no responsibility for anything at all, and that might work πŸ˜‰

  72. on 25 Feb 2013 at 5:54 pm72Holloway2Holland

The new financial results will only fuel the fires of discontent raging in certain sections of the support. It’s basically saying, without getting into the technical mumbo jumbo, that we had money and now we’ve got even more.

After the week that’s been, I’m not sure if this was the very best momement to release such results. PHW’s statements will be easy fodder for those who wish to agitate an already pretty volitile situation. The guys in the PR department really should do/know better.

    http://gu.com/p/3e3de

  75. on 25 Feb 2013 at 6:04 pm75zicoinexile

Erm, H2H, Swiss Ramble’s take on it is that excluding property and player sales we made a loss (Β£27m before tax). Since property only made up some Β£2m of that….

Doesn’t exactly suggest that we will stop selling our best players…. πŸ™

  76. on 25 Feb 2013 at 6:04 pm76Holloway2Holland

    @71.

Your solution, although pretty drastic, wouldn’t be so bad with a little moderation.

My major gripe with Mr Wenger is his inability or refusal to delegate responsibilitys. He’s taken way too much hay on his fork, whatever anyones opinion of David Dein may be, it’s hard to deny that Wenger has missed him since his departure.

I also hope he will finaly share the burden of training with a few more specialists. Get some ex-players in, maybe even some from other clubs to bring in some fresh perspectives or tactics. He can then get on with the still mamoth task of the day to day running of the club.

  77. on 25 Feb 2013 at 6:08 pm77Camberwell Gooner

The financial results are great news but obviously badly timed!

As far as I’m concerned, they can do what they like with it. I know I’ll be howling for them to ‘spend some [expletive removed] blasted money’ come the summer but if anyone expects them to go on a Β£100m supermarket sweep, they can forget it. Not gonna happen.

It might not be spent, and we still stand only a slim chance of winning trophies next season, but at least we’re not risking doing a Malaga. Much rather have a scrabble for 4th choice every season than be a financial wreck with one extra piece of silverware.

  78. on 25 Feb 2013 at 6:09 pm78Ollie

We’ve made shit signings also at the time we signed Henry, Pires, etc. Let’s just generally ignore the good signings when it suits us…. :s

  79. on 25 Feb 2013 at 6:11 pm79Ollie

I never really studies the financial results before and am not about to start now.
In fact, nobody used to care.

I just hope we’re financially healthy and that’s the end of the debate for me.

The Qatar Money Circus from yesterday put me off sugardaddy owners even more than ever before.

Zee @75 – new sponsorship deals, new tele deal, fewer players that anyone wants (why, i’m only mucking about there), champs league qualification, maybes a smaller cash-reserve mountain and p’raps even selling bundles more shirts in eastern/BTM parts – might help stop that.

But fukkit – i’m only guessing – there are those on here who have a far, far greater insight into the club’s finances.

    AL/Zico.

We’ve been here before and at the time I suggested that the self-sustaining modelm wasn’t as sustaining as some would have us believe.

Now that we’ve been all but asset stripped (ok maybe a little over exagerated, but you know what I mean) i\t really is down to the commercial team to bridge the gaps and without falling into the same old arguement we really need to do better on field so that the off field business can florish.

Trev, I volunteer. I’ll make it look like an accident, like he slipped on a banana skin. Noone will ever suspect foul play since he usually leaves a trail of them all over the crumbling wreck of Shite Hart Lane as he swings through the rafters from tyre to tyre.

  180. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:03 pm180Charlie

Uncle Charlie – we did win at West Ham you know. And considering the gap is currently four points, our results and the LWC’s results thus far can’t have been all that different!

    Job’s yours, CG. πŸ™‚

  184. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:07 pm184Holloway2Holland

It will be on Sport1 and it’s the only PL game of the day, so I’d say most definetly yes, it will be in Dutch.

  185. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:07 pm185Snir Geuli

H2H – Upton Park is a tough place to play at, as is Goodison Park, Britannia etc.

Chelsea lost there, City and United drew there (albeit United’s draw was in the cup).

They could and should have taken points from this game.

A draw on Sunday means 4 points from Spurs and 5 points from Chelsea. because I don’t think they’ll drop points against West Brom at home.

Granted, the week after we have Everton at home, while Spurs are at Anfield and Chelsea at Craven Cottage.

A draw on Sunday makes it harder for us. Very hard.

  186. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:11 pm186Charlie

Pedantic note – Actually the week after next we’re likely to have a weekend off (as Everton should beat Oldham this week) and Chelsea will be playing in the FA Cup.

And if we do draw on Sunday the gap is still half what it was at the the same stage last year, so it’s no lost cause yet. Screw the draw of course, let’s aim to stuff those gits.

  187. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:13 pm187Holloway2Holland

    Snir.

The most important thing is, that we concentrate on our own games, there are still way too many variables to worry about any one result.

We’re four points off them, two off the Chavs, look what the gap was this time last year. It’s not going to be plain sailing, but it never really is. I know it’s a cliche, but we just have to take every game as it comes, keep our heads down and keep putting three points on the board.

  188. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:16 pm188Snir Geuli

That’s exactly my point H2H, that we have to get three points on the board, not one.

A draw would make it a bit far.

We only have eleven games left, ten after the NLD.

Last season it was seven points after the NLD, but Spurs had United at home and Everton away straight after that. They lost both and we made it a one point gap.

  189. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:19 pm189Trev

Got a nasty surprise when I went to Screwfix today.
Turns out it’s not a dating agency at all. πŸ˜‰

  190. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:23 pm190Uncle Charlie

I’m fuming. I’ll reserve further judgement until 6pm Sunday. Night Gooners.

  191. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:25 pm191Holloway2Holland

Spurs are more scared of us then we are of them.

We have history on our side, they can see us coming up behind them in their rear view mirror and they know they are just a one trick pony and a simeon injury away from being a team led by Scott Parker and Adeboywhore.

I know it’s easier said then done, but take Bale out and they are clueless.

If that fails we can always rely on the managment skills of Rafa to balls it up at the Chavs, his official title is the Caretaker……..

    Undertaker, more like. πŸ˜‰

  192. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:25 pm192scruzgooner

    lol, trev.

and speaking of ikea, did you know they now sell horsehair blankets?

  193. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:33 pm193Snir Geuli

H2H – That’s being very simplistic. I could have said take the Dutchman out and they’re clueless about us last season.

As for Chelsea – I think that we will leapfrog them, Benitez is shit.

  194. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:34 pm194Charlie

Chelsea are certainly the team wobbling at the moment anyway in the league, haven’t they won about three league games in 2013 so far?

  195. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:36 pm195Charlie

Yeah Snir, but they didn’t stop the Dutchman πŸ˜‰

  197. on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:51 pm197Wind

Yes the 3 points against the LWCs are important. But because West Ham couldn’t do it for Sir Bobby Moore, those 3 points will only bring us 1 point behind, instead of 1 or 2 ahead of them. So of course we need to beat them on Sunday, but more importantly we need to beat them in such a convincing, crushing and heartbreaking way that the fear and memories of choking leads on us such as last season’s 10 points is instilled right in their hearts and at the front of their minds and deep in their souls, causing a reoccurence of said choking so we glide far ahead of them into 3rd or even 2nd 8)

    I fucking hate T*ttenham. πŸ™‚

I advise not reading/listening to the press at all this week if you want to avoid hearing them wank off about Mr Bale. They’ll be at it even more in the run-up to the game.

  212. on 26 Feb 2013 at 8:48 am212Ollie

My jinxing powers are really uncanny. I switched off the internet at some point when the score was 2-1. Thought I’d just check the final score when the game is over.
As I’d just finished what I was doing, I checked the time, thought bah it must be injury time or maybe even over.
I thought I might as well check already, opened the Eurosport app, and lo and behold, at that very fucking moment, the scored just appeared as 3-2, the text update only followed just later, so basically Monkeyboy must have scored just as I checked the score.

It’s fucking scary (even if it has nothing to do, you know, but it happens on an altogether too regular basis).

Been out of the country for the last 48 hours.

Just got back and took a quick scan of Twitter and the Arsenal blogs. All I can say is that moments like these reveal those with faint hearts.

We’re still bang in this, Chelsea are in disarray, the LWCs can generally be relied on to fall to bits, and (critically) both teams are still in the Europa League and have played a lot of football already this term.

I know the consensus in the bar is that we need to win on Sunday. I think that we could pick up a draw and it would prove sufficient come May.

  237. on 26 Feb 2013 at 2:11 pm237bathgooner

With you there N7, a draw is the minimum though. Can’t lose to these vermin, it’d give them such a lift as well as a 7 point gap. I’d prefer to burst their bubble and give the chimp a bruising.

  238. on 26 Feb 2013 at 2:15 pm238N7 Gooner

    bath @ 237

Totally agree. Lose on Sunday and we’re unlikely to catch them, even with the LWCs’ genetic propensity to self-destruct.

Spurs go to Anfield the following game, sandwiched between two fixtures against Inter.

Then a couple of weeks later they play Swansea away, Everton at home, Chelsea away, City at home in that order. Plenty of scope for dropped points.

If we can get to that Spurs/Chelsea game just a point or two behind our rivals then we will be sitting pretty.

  239. on 26 Feb 2013 at 2:21 pm239Ollie

Agreed with it all N7(as usual πŸ˜‰ ). A draw between the Spammers and that lot yesterday would have been good for us, but I still believe a draw with the Spuds next Sunday wouldn’t be the end of the race.

  240. on 26 Feb 2013 at 2:22 pm240Ollie

(though to be fair we also have plenty of scope for dropped points too, with Swansea away, Everton at home, Man U at home, etc….)

If we don’t have a game that weekend, I believe it would be a first in ages. Will be most weird.

Not happening though, I expect Everton to win comfortably.

Monkey boy is a on a good little run, but he won’t keep saving them like he has been. We just need to hold our nerve, not do anything daft and our superior know how (and likely lack of involvement in the next round of the CL) will do the rest.

    N7 – I actually looked at the run-in.

Even a loss won’t be irreversible. Factored in draws at Fulham, and Swansea and United at home and we still make the top four.

It’s just gonna be a lot harder.

  252. on 26 Feb 2013 at 4:13 pm252Lars

    So, then…

Back in Sweden after a few days in London. Have not had too much time to keep up with the drinks in this bar, so apologies if I reiterate points already debated to death πŸ™‚

A relatively late Friday flight arrived slightly ahead of schedule. We arrived at Heathrow Terminal 5 – at the B gates. Bummer. A looooong walk and then a shuttle train. And then the slowest escalator in history up to the passport queues. Well, still no problems, we have a few minutes until the next Express train to Paddington. Bags picked up I walk up to the ticket machine, which won’t sell me the “four for Β£50” ticket they offer. I walk up to the customer service desk where they also refuse to sell me one of those. Why? Because I have to buy them either from the guy who was supposed to be standing in the arrivals hall but most certainly was not, or buy one online. “Why?”, I asked. “Because it’s a special offer”. Clearly, the “special” bit meant that they didn’t want people to be able to take advantage of that offer… so off I go a few yards to the right, chuck a pound into one of those Internet terminals and, despite the terminal having the crappiest keyboard ever, I then manage to get us a ticket sent to my phone. Customer service indeed.

Anyway, the weekend could now start. A couple of pints down the Twelve Pins with tabs and zico was a good warm-up for Saturday. We started off down the Robinson Crusoe, and after a few pints (though only Coca Cola for the youngest member of our party of course) we started walking towards the stadium via a Chinese take-away right next to the pub. And I swear to you all, that was the hottest food I have ever tasted. No, not as in “spiciest”, I mean as in very, very warm. They must have cooked that meal in molten lava, it took forever to cool down enough to eat.

Off to the stadium and through Turnstile A and up the stairs. And then of course another 60-ish steps up to Block 92, row 32. Tried to spot Trev in Block 91 but no luck.

I suppose most has been said about the game itself but a few points from me: I thought we deserved the win, and while we lacked confidence we did try and in the end it paid off. I did also notice a slight change in the way we defended corners, we weren’t playing zonal with quite as many players, I thought we had a better balance between zonal and man-marking.

Post-match the young ones went back to the hotel and me and my brother went down to the Tollie for a significant number of pints and lots of good company. I was also given a bag of salty liqourice by Lin, the female bouncer! I don’t quite remember every bit of the later hours of the evening, but I remember leaving with my brother and walking to Finsbury Park where we met up with the young’uns and went for some Indian takeaway. Back at the hotel we watched MOTD and wondered if it was us or the Hansen/Shearer comedy double-act that had been drinking for ten or so hours before the show.

Sunday and off to the Emirates to get some Arsenal stuff for the youngest to really make sure he’d be hooked. One Cazorla replica shirt and two t-shirts for him, while I noticed that there were still very few new items in the store and more or less everything Nike-branded was on sale. I’d be very surprised if they are our kit suppliers next season.

The afternoon was then spent down in Spitalfields and Whitechapel where Martin joined us for a spot of lunch at a very good Pakistani restaurant, and then off to a nearby pub to watch Nathan Dyer make a massive twat of himself in the COCup final. What an idiot, if the designated penalty taker says no you fucking shut up and walk away even if you are on a hattrick. I’ve never liked Dyer, and his behaviour in the final only confirmed my impression that he is a Grade A wanker.

The Monday was spent being all cultural and touristy. A visit to St Pauls (unfortunatley we couldn’t get to the outside of the dome due to refurbishments being in progress) and then Tate Modern. That last bit was not really my cup of tea, but the others enjoyed it. A lot of walking around central London was then followed by some proper culture: a tour of the Emirates Stadium.

What then followed was the only disappointment of the weekend, the win for Gareth Bale at Upton Park. We watched it at the Pins, and at times it was such a crap game we started laughing. Collins is a horrible, horrible defender and West Ham had absolutely no tactical idea at all. Tottenham are a very organised team but apart from Bale they aren’t actually very good. Only problem is that he is, at the moment, on fire and scores goals like crazy.

Well, that was the weekend from my perspective, and massive thanks are due to all who contributed to it! Don’t know when my next trip over will be, but there will be at least one more before the end of the season (plus of course Munich away) and whenever it will happen I am already looking forward to it!

  253. on 26 Feb 2013 at 4:23 pm253Ollie

‘a couple of pints’? I heard the Friday warm-up was a little more than that πŸ˜‰

Sales like that are not unusual, Lars, same every year in fact, I don’t think it’s anything special, and Nike are most likely to reamain our kit supplier at least next season.
    Beyond that, we’ll see.

Anyway, good stuff, see you in Munich!

In Dublin on business catching up with back drinks. Too many faint hearts for my liking. We have finished ahead of the LWCs 16 years in a row. Sixteen FFS. There’s a reason for that and it is because we are fundamentally a better club with a stronger ethos and much better management. I wanted West Ham to win yesterday because on the run- in the first time they slip all of their supporters will be crapping themselves. ‘ Please don’t let it happen again like it does every year’. Bale ( whisper it) may look like a chimp but is an exceptional player and the sooner he leaves them the better. Thus it is ideal if he shines as much as he can this season but they don’t do anything.
Keep the faith Gooners. We have our problems but compared with them we are in a different league and as Sunday approaches I will grow increasingly more confident because our team is better than theirs. It would of course help if their pre- match lasagne might be got at but we have right on our side and they are the Scum. That will never change.

For me Barca cunts shade Real ..

That lad Varane seems to be a real player.
Barca are a shadow of their former selves.
I wonder if Pepe saw that coming.

Can’t help but feel that Cesc is lost at Barca. He’s being played totally out of position. He may never appreciate the freedom and centrality of the role he had here.

  305. on 26 Feb 2013 at 9:43 pm305Ollie

    3-2 final score.
Lille will regret the massive fuck-up for St Etienne’s second goal, but can’t argue St Etienne deserved the victory.

Bordeaux tomorrow not on TV (PSG vs OM, again, will be).

    Goodnight folks.

  314. on 26 Feb 2013 at 10:05 pm314Snir Geuli

I have to say I took great pleasure in watching Barca being outplayed!

They are so much more cunty than Real.

Vinny – I’m not sure it would be something we could do.

We did man mark Messi at the Ems with Kos on him tracking him everywhere on the pitch with Song covering the space behind.

We no longer have someone with a defensive mindset.

One of our most glaring problems is the fact that we attack with nine players.
Even Barca leave Busquets a bit behind to cover their high line.

Because Arteta is still our barometer he is very active in our build up which pushes him up.

What I would do on Sunday was go back to the way we played at Anfield. Soak up the pressure and hit on the break.

We kind of naturally do that away from home, that is why we have conceded the least number of goals (11) away from home.

  315. on 26 Feb 2013 at 10:07 pm315Snir Geuli

…and the wee man has made a fortune on the two home games this season πŸ˜‰

  322. on 26 Feb 2013 at 11:46 pm322Joe

    Ollie,

There’s no doubt Barca are a good team – but they lacked the hunger tonight that Real showed. And I would say the Spanish league by comparison to England is a much easier title to win. The gap in quality between top sides is as wide as the division of the TV money and it shows. I could be wrong but I just can’t see that Barca team winning the CL.

For example, Ronaldo has scored 39 goals so far this season already for Real. Last season he scored 60 and the season before 54. When he played for Manu in his last 3 season he scored 23, 42, 26. Or put it another way, he seems to be scoring twice as many goals in Spain as he was in England..!

  323. on 27 Feb 2013 at 12:03 am323Snir Geuli

Joe – I’ll go as far as to say that it wasn’t 23, 42, and 26 as it includes Europe.

In matches against English opponents (including 3 goals against English opponents in Europe. 1 against Chelsea in the 07-08 final, and 2 against us at the Ems when Gibbs slipped in 08-09) he scored in the league, league cup, FA Cup and Europe:

03-04 – 6 goals (4 in the league, 2 in the FA Cup).
04-05 – 7 goals (5 in the league, 2 in the FA Cup).
05-06 – 11 goals (9 in the league, 2 in the League Cup).
06-07 – 20 goals (17 in the league, 3 in the FA Cup).
07-08 – 35 goals (31 in the league, 3 in the FA Cup, 1 in the CL).
08-09 – 23 goals (18 in the league, 1 in the FA Cup, 2 in the League Cup, 2 in the CL).

Compare that to his outrageous stats since he moved to Spain and it’s telling.

p.s : I know that he was young in his first couple of seasons, but I think he was the finished article by 07-08 so 23 goals the following year is a bit underwhelming, especially when he and Messi score upwards of 50 goals a season for two years straight.

A sneak preview of Vilas-Boas team instructions for, apparantly, the rest of the season:

Gareth Bale: “Pick up the ball somewhere near the half way line. Beat the entire defence and score loads of amazing goals, all by yourself, with a variety of incredible left foot shots.”

Everybody else: “Don’t forget to feed Gareth!”

This is in case we lose on Sunday and draw vs. Swansea.

  367. on 27 Feb 2013 at 6:21 pm367Holloway2Holland

    abb.

No doubting Bales talent and he is in the most purpleist of patches.
The spotlight burns at it’s brightest at this moment in time and he is the current glory boy. Good, it keeps those twats in the press away from our players especially LJW who was the flavour of the moment this time a few weeks ago, as Theo was before him.

Problem is, he’s (Galen) never really done anything of note, he’s never won anything, never been to a finals, but he has scored a few goals and is making a mediocre Sp*ds side look…. well… less mediocre. He obviously also no sense of history, because like those who came and failed before him, Cunty Keane and Rafael Fanny Fart to name but a few, he’s now started to believe his own hype. The “we are better then Arsenal” headlines are starting to appear once again in the build up to the NLD while our lads sensibly stay stchum. History has a way of repeating itself and I have a feeling that we’re only a “shift of power” statement away from being able to start hanging up the St Totts day buntings.

Let them have their moment in the press, let them bask in the spotlight, for it won’t be long before once again they will be cowering in our shadow where they belong.

    FOYS FIOS

  372. on 27 Feb 2013 at 7:59 pm372Ollie

I suppose that’s what you get for not buying a single club in the summer, selling your top scorer in January and only buying a 19yo unknown quantity from South America who happens to injure himself in his first game?

4th a month ago, now back in mid-table mediocrity after 3 consecutive defeats (all at home…) and now on the verge of being kicked out of the Cup by an amateur club.

This, my friends, is proper shit. Not like Arsenal πŸ˜‰

  373. on 27 Feb 2013 at 8:04 pm373Ollie

Extra time in VΓ©nissieux. I’ll bother with the French cuntfest after that then. I’m not that fussed about watching Beckham start a game.

  374. on 27 Feb 2013 at 8:04 pm374Thundertinygooner

Chimp as I prefer to call him is outstanding. The rest of their team isn’t. The midfield they ended with on Monday was very average. We need to get our heads right. LJW played out of his skin when we beat them 4-1 and revelled in the atmosphere. They are waiting to blow it and their worst nightmare is if it starts to go wonky with us just like it did last season. We need to start well and keep the intensity up.
We need to think about taking care of Chimp. Ramsey just ahead of Sagna?

  380. on 27 Feb 2013 at 8:24 pm380Ollie

L’equipe website seems to have the pelanty by pelanty shootout, unlike francefootball.
Mind you, I only see one scored, and after the second automatic refresh (all spaced by the minute) I see no new one, so no idea if it works.

I mean they don’t actually have pelanty by pelanty in missed/scored/comment them fashion. I just see the name of a penalty scorer….

  381. on 27 Feb 2013 at 8:25 pm381Ollie

Yeah, I’m convinced it refreshes fuck all.

Surely they can’t have gone 5-3 then 5-4? I am confused.

It’s incredible that the internet itself seems to only care about games on TV: no min-by-min report of that game, no kick-by-kick of the penalty shootout.

I had ‘Sertic’ and that was it. And as I said, it can’t have gone from 5-3 to 5-4 in a penalty shootout, surely? I believe it’s impossible.
