Open Eve And Community Works
Jul 16th, 2014 by 'holic
As Ian Poulter goes through his final preparations for The Open this weekend, the Englishman experienced a rather unusual encounter from a passionate group of Arsenal supporters. The Golfing Gooner was given a little help from his fellow fans who brought some terrace atmosphere to the normally quieter golfing fairways. The day became even more interesting when Poulter found Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg had taken the place of his caddie.
Ian Poulter once said home support really drives him on when he plays tournament golf in Britain, especially at The Open or Ryder Cup. With his passion for football, PUMA arranged for an Arsenal contingent to give him a special send off for Hoylake.
Ian Poulter said: “Home support means a lot to me in England, it’s always inspiring and motivating to hear the fans cheering you on through eighteen holes on home soil. Obviously I’ve seen Arsenal play a lot throughout my life, and I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in some very passionate Ryder Cup matches in recent years, so being part of this film that brought Arsenal fans together with a very different spectator sport like golf was a fantastic and unique experience.”
Well played PUMA for the enthusiastic approach to their new partnership with Arsenal. I might not have quite the right shape for the new shirt, but loving the promotion you are bringing to the club we all love.
Arsenal in the Community 2014 Awards
Arsenal in the Community held their annual awards ceremony in the Woolwich Suite at Emirates Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The event took place to recognise the achievements and work of 350 Arsenal in the Community participants over the course of the 2013/14 season. Among the projects celebrated were the club’s education initiative the Arsenal Double Club, the social inclusion programmes Kicks and Positive Futures and the long running Arsenal Bowles programme.
Arsenal legends Alan Smith and Perry Groves were on hand to congratulate the winners, along with representatives from Islington Council. A video message from Gunners midfielder Abou Diaby was also played out.
Another former Arsenal player, Roy Pack, was recognised for his contribution to the club’s community work. Roy, who played for the club in the 1960s, now volunteers with Arsenal’s mental health programme Imagine Your Goals.
After the ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to have their picture taken with the FA Cup. As luck would have it I missed out, unable to accept my invite, but I do still have a snap of a younger and fitter me with the Premier League trophy, FA Cup, and Community Shield from 2002. Some consolation, I think you will agree.
Head of Arsenal in the Community Alan Sefton said: “These awards are a great way for us to celebrate the achievements of the young people we work with, and to take stock of what we’ve achieved together over the past year. There are hundreds of people who make Arsenal in the Community what it is, and it’s brilliant to be able to thank them here at Emirates Stadium.”

Has the iambic pentameter gone away along with the lyric transfer speculation?
what a brilliant advertisement. love the way it builds, and then freddie.
Can’t say whether the whole Kedhira business was a fake news story but it sure had Chelsea worried.
http://metro.co.uk/2014/07/16/sami-khedira-is-not-in-talks-to-move-to-arsenal-or-chelsea-4800860/?
Where I sit in the ground ( North Upper ) there is a large contingent of Gooners with golf connections including a couple of ex- pros. Very nice people and I will not identify them but they are very committed to the club. But I haven’t seen Poulter there yet and if he had been there you wouldn’t have missed him!
Good luck to Ian tomorrow but my money would be on Justin Rose.
Interesting that Khedira’s agent denies any contact with either Arsenal or Chelsea. Makes you wonder, considering the considerable speculation there has been, why he hasn’t denied it earlier. Maybe he just enjoys watching the media make an arse of itself. If so, his life must be very enjoyable at present.
Only when it’s on arsenal.com do I believe it. Everything else is pure fantasy.
On another point social media is doing my head in. We now cannot tell if zmesut is giving money to Gaza, Gazza, sick Brazilian children or the sick Brazilian World Cup squad.
Similarly Khedira is either about to sign for us or Cjrlsea or has never spoken to either club or is about to join Arsenal if we pay him the GDP of a small African Republic.
Frankly it’s all bollocks and if I had my way I would consign Twitter to a hole in the ground. It just spreads fantasy more quickly
Good evening everyone,
Holic, what a lovely read, going to research some of what you mentioned. Bet Diaby’s message is inspiring!
Just a follow-up on “the medja” – I see Mesut’s donation to Gaza, linked to in the last drinks, is also total bollocks.
When I was I kid, my Dad said, “Don’t believe everything you read in the papers.”
That can sadly now be revised to, “Don’t believe anything …”
8ball and NBN, got a kick seeing those photos of NY’s trains and subways (from prev. post) Since I was a little girl, I’ve had a love affair with trains.
Homer and Zico, have a marvelous time in NY 🙂
Excellent ad Holic. Hope your shoulder is regaining its ‘swingability’. All the best, mate.

You’re right but it goes beyond papers,it’s websites and sports stations and the world and his wife recycling lies, exaggeration and trivia. 90% of what we read about football now ( outside the matches) is rumour and innuendo– and as for the other 10%!
Cheers, H.
From Ozil’s official Facebook page “dear fans,
prior to the #WorldCup I supported the surgery of eleven sick children. since the victory of the #WorldCup is not only due to eleven players but to our whole team, I will now raise the number to 23. this is my personal thank-you for the hospitality of the people of Brazil”.

I’m a bit late with an Owenpoem (night and day are reversed downunder) and it’s far from iambic pentametered, but at least mine is a verticle poem as called for originally by Trev (check the initial letters of each line)…
Owen is a scouse git
Wanking is his vice
Ever plays the clever dick
Never plays it nice
In size he’s just a pimple
Standing five foot nothing much
All he says is dull and simple, and reads like double Dutch
Do not heed a word he utters
It’s just media effluence
Composed for mindless nutters
Knowing nowt but flatulence
Öskar
No worries Boss! That’s what I’m hear for 😀
*CoR dons his Biggles goggles and flies off into the sunset*
Here’s my Owen poem:
Michael,
You’re a cunt,
Michael Owen,
You’re a cunt.
You come on the air
And make us despair
With unwanted opinions
You sad Liverpudlian.
We care not for your bias
For it will not deny us
The success that we are long overdue.
So continue to spew,
And we’ll keep ignoring
Your opinions which are really quite boring.
I’ll accept my Holic Poetry Award now 😀

Arseblog gone all Reginald the Manager today. An enjoyable post. He’s concerned about our lack of options in central defence, given that after Kosc and Mert we only have Verm and he’s alternately injured/off form/running into the opposition box.
Been a lot of talk about promoting from within for 4th choice CB. That’s a risk though, as we’d be one injury away from a teenager with no top level experience as our only back-up. (I’d just as soon keep Djourou to be honest, who I think is quality.) Given that we basically withdrew our best players from the cups until the latter stages last year, where possible given our squad depth, would seem to be plenty of games to go around if we bring someone in.
First game saturday and still a lot of work to be done for BIG Ivan… 2 weeks from the Em’s cup and 3 from the Charity Shield… If you exclude people on the beach or in the pool in Vegas at the moment we are looking like this I reckon:
Schez, Jenks, Pegalegazoo, some other yoof, Gibbs, Arteta, Ramsey, Diaby, Super Tom, Gnarby, Sonogo.
Bench: ???, ???, Monreal, Flamini, Zelalem, ??? etc etc
Going by the squad list, we have 11 WC players to return, plus Theo when fit. Some of these will have to get their pre-season training in competitive games though, as we won’t be playing Prem games with that back-4 or that front 3. Judging by past experience, this means injury at some point, so we better be prepared for that this year. (Arseblog makes the point that we were actually quite lucky with injuries last year in that the defence basically got through unscathed and it was our weakest area for depth. Same could be said of the year RVP stayed fit and carried us to 4th when he was our only striker. Or Giroud last year I guess.)

Fact 😉
Blogs is absolutely correct.
We definitely need reliable cover at CB even if TV5 stays. We were extraordinarily lucky with injuries there last season (compensates terrible luck in midfield) as its an area where both injuries and suspensions are to be expected every season.
If TV5 leaves, I expect two additions. I wouldn’t be surprised if any TV5 move to Manure involved a swap deal for Smalling as we were in for him before he moved there and Arsene will probably see him as a career to be salvaged.
33 – Just my opinion, but that Smalling is terrible. Main problem is he can’t actually kick the ball very well. Would seem to be a disastrous trait in a team like ours. I remember seeing him spray a 20 yard pass to the full-back at our place for Fulham just after Utd signed him, it landed in about row q. Thought we dodged a bullet the and still do. (Were rumours that we only got involved to drive the price up for them.)
Morning GT – all quite on the eastern front, any idea of what BIG Ivan is up to? He’s not returning my calls at the moment 🙁
@ 35 – Nah, not since walking away from Arsenal Fans TV saying:
“We’ve pulled off a good one with Alexis Sanchez, but there’s more work to be done…
…I’m not going to talk about it until it’s done. I’ve got to get back, we’ve got more work to do.”
That to me means Marquee signing to come.
🙂
I’d disagree that we were extraordinarily lucky with injuries in defense. Some luck maybe, but far from extraordinary in my view. Central defenders are in general injured significantly less than other players so the fact that Kos and Mertesacker could play the vast majority of the season (32 and 35 games respectively I think it was) is actually more norm than exception. Sagna has over the years, two fractured legs apart, proven himself to be one sturdy fecker and then we had Gibbs and Monreal on the left side of things covering for each other.
36 – BIG Ivan KNOWS 🙂
There’s a lot of tripe surrounding Khedira today. But he came to me in a dream last night and confessed that, he wants to join us but there are people in his ear telling him to go where the money is.
I didn’t know he was intending to work for us for free…
…maybe he intends to donate his salary to Gazza’s missus
🙂
Bath,
I think the Spanish chap were chasing from Athletico “Manquillo” is not only a supporting right back to Debauchy (assuming the Corporal goes out on loan) but can also cover for Centre Half.
I do think Vermy will be allowed to go but only when we have cover arranged and in his case it’ll probably be a replacement with similar experience.
That would provide us with much the same scenario as last season. I can’t see Wenger getting 3 players to cover 3 positions if he can manage to do it with 2.
40 – according to the tinterweb, Manquillo is 5 foot 9 inches. Ever seen anyone that short play central defender successfully in the Prem? I can’t think of anyone. It’s not impossible, but about 19 Premier League clubs would love to have a crack at us with him defending the high-ball.
Okay:
So we’re in Boreham Wood this Saturday, then off to New York.
My guess is that the right back thing will be pretty much sorted by then. I also expect the keeper situation to be tied up.
Then it’s the big two. The annual tournament and the community Shield. These two are crucial to the clubs commercial and reputational interests.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we were linked to another big name in the defensive midfield or even the striking area by then.
Then it could take up until the window slams shut. Judging by current business, we could be fully stocked by which time, probably just tying up the loan deal situation by then.
Don’t forget, Wenger himself will start having to give pressers this week, so all will be revealed this weekend. Or not.
Wonderful GT@43.
All will be revealed – or not.
Just about sums it up.
One thing I would just like to point out. Just because a club has accepted a bid for a player, that player or his agent, may not necessarily find out through the club and may hear it through the meedja first.
Sami’s agent did not state that such a bid had not been accepted. He stated that he was not aware and that he is not in talks. That is a pretty normal thing for an agent. As he pointed out, his client is getting prepared to go on his holiday. That indicated that there will be no movement at least until the player is back from his hols, within the next two weeks presumably.
Every transfer develops in its own way.
The fact remains, we are still looking to sign a DM. Regardless.
Why should Jenks be going out on loan? Doesn’t make a blind bit of sense. He’s been covering for Bacs for two seasons now – what the club don’t know about him already isn’t worth knowing.
Either he’s in the first team squad or he’s sold.
Or not.
@ 44 – you know Wenger. He never see’s, doesn’t know and never wants to be held to speculation.

I would not read that much in to it El,
he was just probably collecting stuff from Puma as it is his sponsor. And to be honest, now when we have Sanchéz, I am even less inclined to thought of having Mario in team.
Nice one, Oskar @18,
no iambic pentameterists though. 😉
The clear out of dead wood less than complete
No defensive midfielder on board
No right back replacement
Not seeing as many long winded posts with
“told ya all I knew”
or “arsene is a legend and loves the club” posts
Or how the “non believers” of the arsenal fan base owe arsene some big apology for buying a single good player in Sanchez.
Some on here talk as if they believe that arsene did the job for free during the lean years and gave up his bonuses during The same period
He does get paid $8.5 mil plus bonuses p/a to scout and buy a decent top shelf player every decade or so.
That is part of his job, it’s not an added value extra he is performing when he buys a good one…
This decade he has bought two good ones (ozil and Sanchez)
Graham Hunter, the acknowledged expert on spanish football was asked about Khedira on Talksport this morning. He said that Arsenal had agreed a deal with Real, but were refusing to meet the players wage demands. He said that if we agree to the player`s wages, he`s ours, otherwise he will probably end up at Chelsea. In other words, our parsimony will help strengthen one of our closest rivals.
What is that sound I hear?
Ah, good, normal service is being restored.
Thank heavens for that.

Biscuitbum, ( Aussie ),
“Parsimony | Define Parsimony at Dictionary dot com
Parsimony definition, extreme or excessive economy or frugality; stinginess; niggardliness.”
From what I have read / heard from the usual media sources – NO ITKs or ‘insiders’ – we have probably offered Khedira, if indeed any offer has been made, around £150,000 PER WEEK, which seems to be our top rate for our best players.
The same sources reckon Khedira is currently on around £200,000 per week.
So, £150,000 pw = c£7,500,000 per year, = c£30,000,000 over 4 yrs
Or, £200,000 pw = c£10,000,000 per year, = c£40,000,000 over 4 yrs
So the difference over 4 years works out to around £10,000,000.
The club does still have to earn it’s money, despite the new sponsorship deals.
Evidently Sanchez, Özil, Koscielny etc aren’t finding the club too ‘niggardly and stingy’.
It’s probably all bollocks, anyway.

Suggestions that Debauchery will be confirmed today as Janmaat’s move to Newcastle is finalised. (The Independent)
Trev @ 61 – it’s rumoured that Mr Khedira is on around £50,000 pw
Eitherway, the way this one is turning is not good for the clubs reputation.
I’m minded to say that we should dump this one. Hate to see this one drag out for another two weeks.
@ 64 I recall Pardew told the press that no such offer had been made for Debuchy, after it was revealed that the club had accepted a bid for him.
He clearly insisted upon a replacement first whilst Jenks stuck his finger up stating that he didn’t want to spend this season looking in from the out.
GT,
I think you’ll find loads of footballers on holiday in the same place ‘cos they’re the only ones who can afford to go there.
Are you actually addicted to this crap ?
That link takes me to a site called ‘Alienware’ !
@ 67 I came across it and thought it would be a good supplement to the point being made about Footballers, Holidays and speculation.
😆
I know my limits! 🙂
When our closest rivals in the PL would not baulk at £200K pw, will it be another 8-10 years before we are prepared to pay what it takes. In the time honoured phrase of dear old Peter Hill-Wood, `either you compete or you don`t`, and getting it half right won`t do. So, in this case, parsimony is the apposite term.
B-bum,
Maybe its just me, but the thought of paying a DCM 200k a week is absolutely insane. I even think paying him 130k a week is bonkers too. If money is Khedira’s priority, then he’d be better served going elsewhere. There are younger, faster, less injury prone players than Sami Khedira. I would sooner money like that be spent on someone like a Reus or Di Maria.
I’m second Trev on this Khedira thing, £10mil aint to be sniffed at. We have shown that we will pay for the best and the rest should come at what they are worth. Was the same with Higuain, at a squad player price we were keen, at Sanchez money no thanks. Khedira turns 28 soon and may not be exactly what we need anyway, but could do a job there. He’d be a quality signing if he comes, but at the same time 60/70mil in fees and wages over 4 years is hefty. Got to draw a line somewhere at some point. If he wants significantly more than Ozil will pay for that’s on him, not our bean counters imo. BIG Ivan knows.

Given our international, multi-cultural squad you’d think our lys would find some better places to holiday than Vegas two years running or the grot-pot that is Puerto Banus. Bit of a worry.
UTA
About the central defender dilemma , how about … hold on … Pepe? 🙂
We need to have a Portuguese in the team to give true credence to (Giroud’s voice and accent) the multicultural ‘melting pot’ claim. We never really had one. Bobby Pires was 1/4th Portuguese I believe, and less we speak about Bischoff better it is.
Pepe is positively (mostly in a negative way) mad, and maybe even borderline psychopath, but with enough ice cubes on his head he is also a terrific defender.
And anyway, man is so essentially mad that not to be mad amounts to another form of madness. Not me, thus said Pascal.
As we are in the business of prizing out players from Real Madrid, why not take the risky fuckers along with the guaranteed success?
Faustus – no thanks hehe, Pepe is a nutcase, besides we already have Flamster for picking up cards heh.
Now here’s the good news. Even believable, based on what we saw last term.

(Apologies for the terrible metaphor). 🙂
I share the sentiments in the bar regarding costings. This all has the scent of Mourinho and money hungry agency dealings. As a club moving forward it is reasons like this why we have at least two to three good options.
We will not be held to ransom.
For the record I do not mind paying for what we can afford for quality. It’s the players who only care about money which I do not feel comfortable about. Saying that, I think we should leave this one in the hands of the negotiators who brought us Ozil and Sanchez.
Éandy @ 75: 🙂
On a serious note, Jenks has the height and physique to deputize for the CB role as the 4th choice CB … if only he had some competence in the heading department. He is probably the worst — even small guys like Santi and Jack are technically quite competent headers of ball — in the team in aerial abilities as he gets his bearing all wrong. He must improve in this area to have a career at the top flight.
Otherwise I think he is a very promising RB, a good second choice to have. Debuchy is no Sagna with respect to fitness and physicality and would not be able to play week in, week out with European matches sandwiched in between. We will need the alternative, and would it not be better to have a familiar, relatively more experienced (with PL and CL) and absolutely committed young gooner with no little quality to play that role than a novice (to PL and CL) however exciting and talented he might be?
However, if we are releasing Jenks on a loan in favor of Manquillo, I will know that Arsene is convinced that the young Spaniard is truly special and is ready to perform this season whenever needed.
GT@79: Absolutely! There is a business model, we will operate within its boundaries which would get redefined every time we make significant forward steps withe respect to sponsorship or other deals, and we will be successful with that.
This assumption is based purely on the speculations in regards to Khedira’s pay demands. I really feel that’s too much money to pay for DCM that is about to be 28, am sorry but we can get the Younger Southampton guy for a cheaper package altogether. He can either play with his best friend or go play with Mr. Boringfootball. We have other fishes to catch, can’t waste too much time on Khedira, sorry.
Holy fucking shit Ukraine really gets out of hand, shooting down civil plane with 290 people on its board is just fucking insane.

Saturdays game live on the club channel. Pleasing 🙂
Welcome, Mathieu!
Oh Debuchy has signed. Looks like the timing of @53 was as risible as it’s content.
Looking forward to hearing about all this “deadwood” that apparently we’ve been slow in clearing.
Goonertown, your postings generally have the air of a thirteen year old about them but you have surpassed yourself at 86 above.
@53
You are Michael Owen and I claim my £5.
Debuchy’s English already significantly better than Steven Taylor’s. Good stuff. Having him say Arsene is “a great gaffer” was a bit off putting, if only because he probably called Pardew that. A bit like finding out your special lady used to take it from Ryan Shawcross, but we will work through it.
BIG Ivan does it again. All hail BIG Ivan. Two more please maestro. (And a keeper I guess.)

Welcome home Debuchy, quality signing. Just stay at your post for you wont see Theo or Ox tracking back to many times.
Khedira if acting way to pricey for anyone’s liking. If he wants to play hard ball and go for the highest bidder, then sorry we aint game for it.
We rather have bender or Schneiderlin.
Next up Ospina??? I believe so.
The one major concern is CB if Tv5 goes. If united it is then why do i sense Wenger may ask for Fellaini??? I just think we might get him in the end.
Remy reduce your wages you idiot, you will get to play in the premier league champions of 2014-15 season.
Have to go with Joeos on this one. Nothing to joke about when 295 innocent lives have been lost.
Well that makes two excellent signings this summer. It’s a completely different feel to a year ago, when we had bought no one at this point except Sanogo, if memory serves. The biggest and most difficult signing of the summer is already in the door and a massive statement made. And now Debuchy, who seems like a solid, if less exciting, addition. (But then new right backs aren’t usually as exciting as new strikers. Nor should they be.)
As for the rest of the summer, we are being linked with the right *kind* of player. We’re just a few pieces away from being ready to compete at the very highest level. Whatever you think of the potential of this team, it seems we are finally throwing off encumbrances and going for it. Which is all you can ask your team to do.
Joes or whatever you call yourself. I take it you are offended. So in turn you have tried to offend me. You’re a Flamin genius and also a keyboard coward. Your opinion means as much to me as the last Malaysian airliner.
Now eat that and allow it to digest

Goonertown@97, I really think you should take a step back and think about whay you just said there. However you try to distance yourself from it, 295 very real lives have been lost in Ukraine today so show some fucking respect to them and those they left behind.
All 295 dead apparently, what the hell is happening to this world. What did those people do to anyone?? I mean can there be any logic to this insane act of cruelty and fanaticism????
ECG @ 95
No offence but you are in the wrong forum my friend.
If you want to weep about planes falling out of the sky, then a news site is your place. Not a goonerholic bar.
And who on earth is joking?? 2 Malaysian airlines go missing, i am staying away. That is not a joke. I am as serious as Alan Hansen’s apology to Walcott.
What is a joke though, is the way some people think they are dictators on life and morals, without an understanding of what they are talking about.
Anyway. Welcome Debuchy Pardon my manners son.
Lars I would appreciate if you didn’t swear at me. You do not know me like that. So I think you should take a step back and keep your emotions in check my friend.

I am not going to repeat myself. Let me make myself clear. I will not be taking any Malaysian Airliners. Not now. Not never.
This has nothing to do with mocking dead people. That is too naive an outlook. But I will answer people who out of turn, behave disrespectfully towards me.
As I say, this is not the place to get nasty. We are hear to discuss Arsenal. But if people would like to address other current issues, at least do so sensibly. Here is my sensible contribution. I will not be catching a flight with Malaysian Airlines.
Over and out!!
Goonertown, with your childish postings you make it easy to skip over any future posting that bear your name as it will inevitably be puerile.
El – things are taking shape my friend. The team is strengthening. A keeper and a holding midfielder and away we go.
I think we should let Tommy work down his contract and allow him to leave for free at the end of the season. This gives us time to source an adequate replacement and a good opportunity to win something with a full squad.
Another striker would be a bonus if you ask me. I do think that as we have released two strikers, we should at least bring in one more.
Life is goood!!
🙂
Joeso
You are becoming a little irritant. Now please swat off!!
🙂
Bienvenu Mathieu!
Not remotely excited by this signing but much needed and hopefully a future legend.
There was a debate this morning between the ‘ bloody Arsenal don’t pay top dollar’ and the sustainability crowd. I’m in the latter camp. Wages set by people operating outside sensible business parameters eventually destroy the industry in which they apply.
When advising companies strategically there comes a point where they must decide their pricing and salary philosophy.
I think going to Arsenal is ridiculously expensive and one big reason is the policies of clubs who before FFP had no accountability. They were effectively writing a blank cheque to purchase the title or the CL. Unfair competition? Depends on your point of view but the implications for us are enormous. Many clubs like Leeds flew too close to the sun and look at them now. QPR are in grave danger of being yet another Redknapp club to go into administration and they are paying a huge salary to a partially crocked 34 year old centre back. It’s a ridiculous gamble and poor business practice.
Arsenal are run like a business and it is one that is making huge strides . They managed to purchase Ozil and Sanchez and have an excellent squad but only because they temper ambition with business sense. I’ve had enough of the Arsenal lack ambition because they don’t pay enough to keep or buy players. Sagna wasn’t worth what he asked for. Wallop ! off he goes and is replaced by a younger, cheaper model.
I don’t want Arsenal buying the League. If I did we could ask Usmanov in and we could have a game of chicken with Abramovich and Sheikh Mansour which will continue the process of taking the game ever further from its traditional fan base. Khedira isn’t worth the figures quoted. They may be lies but if they aren’t I don’t want my club throwing prudence out of the window. We’ve seen they are going for it this season and I trust them to behave responsibly
After all Big Ivan is at the helm now!
Goonertown, quoted from @104,
“No offence but you are in the wrong forum my friend.
If you want to weep about planes falling out of the sky, then a news site is your place. Not a goonerholic bar.”
Your insinuation that people in this bar are completely unconcerned about 295 innocent people losing their lives is about as way wide of the mark as most of your transfer twaddle.
There is no point in you denying or defending the remark now. Just take it from me that there are a lot of very decent, thinking people in this bar who will be angry and amazed at such a stupid accusation.
Thunder T.
A walloping good one!
Nobody seems to be appreciating the signing of Debuchy, having taken it for granted after it was reported as a given during the World Cup. But I will take AW’s word for it that Debuchy is exactly the player we need at right back at this point in time, and if so it is exceedingly good news that we have completed his transfer this early.
Ttg @116, couldn’t have said it any better. Thank you, and Goonertown I see where you are coming from. It might sound a bit harsh to some people, but like you I definitely won’t be taking a Malaysian airline ever. Sound harsh, but that is the reality. Myself, am originally from Nigeria and you can’t pay me any amount to fly while in Nigeria. That would never happen. Welcome Debuchy!!!!
Trev
Yet another person who gets off on his own posts.
I meant what I said from the very start and just for those with degrees and PHD’s I will slow it down for you.
I will be avoiding any Malaysian airline flights. Anybody who does not have anything better to do than to try to pointlessly challenge me, then knock yourself out.
There is no need to make up stupid words just because some in the bar do not share your anti-transfer news agenda you sado!
Right next! 🙂
SAG @ 119
I could get deeper than that but some people in this bar live for drama and I would be feeding their ridgid little agendas if I were to succumb.
No Malaysian airliners for me.
God rest the dead!
8 ball
Apparently Debuchy replaced Sagna in the national squad due to injury. The fact he has managed to keep him out says a lot about his capabilities. It’s a bit like Vermaelen v Koschielny.
I’m happy!
This is our home away from home.
Our inner sanctum xx
Just feels great to be an arsenal fan again especially since our fa cup win, have to say loyal gunners had to listen to some sh@te even if the histerical c**nts had a point at times.all the years of pain are paying off and it feels great just saying.seems akb wasn’t a bad side after all 🙂 was it sunny side up? Rip 295.
Goonertown,
I have no anti-transfer agenda. I actually posted at lunch time that Debuchy was expected to complete today.
You doubtless ignored the post because actual news is not really your thing, is it ? Just constantly repeated bollocks with no foundation in truth at all.
As for the rest of your typically childish post –
“I get off on my own posts” – I am alarmed that you have such intimate knowledge of my private psyche.
“You are slowing things down for those with degrees and PHDs” – lacking any sort of logic. As usual.
“Pointlessly challenging you” – because you have the nerve to assume that I, and others, couldn’t care less about 295 people being shot out of the sky.
And you call me a sado ?
Well, for the record, pal, I’m sick of seeing your pathetic nonsense splattered all over this bar every day.
As a recommendation, just re-read your evening’s efforts. Maybe even you will realise how stupid you look and go and get an early night.
GT
Trev is one of our most insightful and entertaining posters. I thought his remarks were fair and well meant. There is a weight of decent compassion in this bar from many people I will never know beyond our online contact and it is the reason I post and look at this site. Football is important but it is a lot less important than life and death. It was one of many things Bill Shankly got wrong
TTG
Trev may be insightful when he chooses to be, but on this occasion he was defensive and rude.
Now without getting too personal, I am not developing this pointless debate beyond where it needs to go.
Thank you
Thanks ttg – and well said.
Trev @ 126
Blah, blah blah there you go again voicing your opinion as though it speaks for everybody or puts me in my place.
Now I have more important things to discuss other than your rant about what’s right and wrong with the world.
Take a break mate.
Look back over your posts and see how they contradict each other if you are that bored.
First off, RIP to the 295. Such a tragic loss. May God grant their loved ones fortitude to bear these losses.
Opinions can be expressed without being insensitive, we ought to be a bit more tactful and considerate when dealing with such issues.
SAG, I happen to know Nigerian airliners are vastly improved and much safer than is made out. Having said that, if you’re comfy sitting in a vehicle from Lagos to Abuja(10hrs minimum), who am I to begrudge you?
Javi Martinez. That’s the answer. A defensive minded midfielder and central defender for the price of one. We could then sign off with Balo and Ospina, job done. Things are shaping up rather nicely.
Solid Gooner – it works both ways my friend.
@Goonertown
Just to clarify: am I correct in guessing that you don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks and that anyone who disagrees with you on this is going to get a mouthful?
GT- agreed. Let’s live and let live.
GT – Thanks for the advice. Can you recommend an appropriate news forum for me to drown my sorrows?
Goonertown – I for one would be most grateful if you would take your “humour” and moronic comments somewhere where they’re more appreciated – shouldn’t be too difficult; I’m sure there are hundreds of sites already making jokes about the death of 295 innocent people. Your attempts to justify your remark only dig you deeper into the hole you started.
Either that or man up and apologise.
Hmm..looks like my comment sparked quite a heated debate.
First of all, it was posted out of pure amazement of such thing happening virtually at the EUs doorstep.
Czech Republic is not very close but not _that_ far from Ukraine to not consider recent events there being slightly unnerving. I was just baffled that such thing as shooting down plane full of civilist can happen nowadays in what we call “civilized” world.
Decided to share as I know that this bar is open to anything even non-Arsenal related. Will think twice about that next time.
And GT – as much as I am a fan of dark humour (and I mean really dark humour, its kinda in Czech nature), just..too soon mate.
N7 – pretty much
Reasonable ended early on in the proceedings unfortunately.
Not really my style, but hey, I’m not a door mat.
Too many glory hunters jumping on the bandwagon. But as I say, I am not a door mat.
ECG
At least you get it.
I don’t know. Sky News??
After back-drinking, I don’t understand the continued discussion about what Khedira is alleged to be demanding. I thought his agent had made it clear he’s not demanding anything. The player has been involved with the World Cup and his agent has not been in negotiations with Arsenal, Chelsea or anyone else.
I.E. Everything you’ve been reading about him coming to Arsenal is regurgitated fiction.
Or not.
No need to think twice, Eandy. At all.
Dk
You are too gulable for me to even respond. Really.
I take it reading is not one of your strong points.
Stick to the tabloids and avoid the broad sheets.
Eandy
I am far to busy to teach. But, when you can tell me what is so funny about what happened, I will share a conversation with you.
Dk @ 140 – you sound confused.
What are you going on about?
Sometimes, it’s better to recognise an error and back away from it with dignity than to let pride make a fool of you.
Night all. Those of us who live in dangerous parts, please do keep your heads down.
N7
I maintain my stance!
Dkgooner@136, I don’t think GT was making light of the situation. Maybe he could have said ‘ May their soul rest in peace’. Which I think he did say in another post, before saying that he won’t be flying Malaysian airline. But I really don’t see anything wrong with that comment. And SG @131, I hear you, but I rather commute 2 days than fly in Nigeria, that’s just me.
Just catching up with the day’s events. A little disappointed to be honest.
Yellow card GT. You know I ask for respectful debate here, and most of the time you follow that.
Black humour? There are places it works. This isn’t one.
Thank you.
Back to football if I may chaps. I see the debuchy signing as a good, but not outstanding addition. He was the easy option, and provided he can keep his discipline, and is reminded that he is in the team to defend as well as to carry the ball forward, he will do a good job.
Jenkinson will be disappointed, and I sympathise, since I believe the lad will improve hugely once he gets regular starts. With Jenks as the regular stand-in, I feel we have the right back position covered. So why won`t the talk of of our interest in Callum Chambers die down. Maybe it is all paper talk, but surely, unless we are planning to loan out or sell Jenks, we don`t need another young right back.
SAG
The forums filled with out of touch degenerates. Nice to talk to at times, but bloody narrow minded.
I’m off :
“As I lay thee down to sleep…”
Really don’t know what the fuss over Khedira’s all about. He doesn’t seem to be a ‘specialist’ DM and from all indications, that’s what most gooners are hankering for. We have Ox, Rambo and Jack that do exactly same(box to box). My feeling is that buying Khedira would be a waste of 45-50m over 4-5 years as well as a kick in the teeth for the likes of Jack. Bender or Javi Martinez on the other hand,……
Fellas, maybe this will help.
A couple of days ago, Rodney Marsh tweeted “A man is diagnosed with Alzheimers, every 67 seconds. Bet he is getting fed up with it”.
The reaction, as you can imagine, was one of outrage.
But, having followed him over the years, I just knew there was more to it. You see, several months ago, he tweeted about going to his doctor, concerned his cholesterol medication might interfere with his MEMORY. Sometimes we express our fears through humor, not meaning to hurt anyone….
Trev, I’ve been the recipient of your generosity, many a time here xx
Eandy, don’t you change a thing 😉
SAG@147: I am dumbstruck. I suggest you read the sequence of posts again.
Holic
I am a little disappointed that you have not taken the time to read the posts but have instead taken the side of people you know because they have told you so.
I didn’t make you out to be bias
@147- fair point. To each, his own.
Welcome to the greatest club Debuchy! Looking forward to the opposition left wingers un-Ravel-ing. 🙂
Our worlds — inner and outer — infiltrate us most when we look for escape. Most of us love football not as an escape, but as an extension of our own beings (and the way we are in the world, warts and all), and so we should expect the fires that we carry as we fumble through our lives to burn us a bit while discussing football.
However I suspect that looking back at our lives from our deathbed, if we are fortunate or unfortunate enough to have that time, the thing that would make us most forgive ourselves is how much compassion and empathy we have shown to others. Let us not underestimate the rigor of that judge within.
AW gave Jenks a vote of confidence, seems he really believes in him. If he buckles down and pushes on who says he can’t have the position as his come next season.
Ospina, Balo and Bender/Martinez, what could go wrong? Sorry El Puno, just keeping your bar stool warm.
Surely the loss of 295 lives puts football into perspective?
Not much to say after catching up with the above tonight.
DKG@ 153, am I missing something? I read all GT’s post sequence, and like I said in my earlier posts, maybe he could have shown some emphaty towards the families, before the comment about not flying Malaysian airlines ever again. So what is wrong with that statement? I really dont see anything wrong with that.
Dr F @ 157- It’s quite sad that value for life and the reality of human suffering is lost to most. The conscience is non existent in some people, while others mask their fear and vulnerabilities in nonchalance. It’s true that people are different but what a sorry state of affairs it truly is if the death bed is what wakens humans to the transience of life.
These are the top seven headlines on the BBC site at the moment:
Malaysian jet crashes in Ukraine
Israel starts Gaza ground offensive
French high-speed train crashes
India six-year-old ‘raped in school’
Tunisian soldiers killed in attack
Microsoft set to axe 18,000 jobs
Australia votes to repeal carbon tax
It is not a happy world.
Poor decision ref
Wise words Dr. Faustus, as always. You’ve basically said everything that needs to be said, but without hurting anyone in this bar or going personal.
Solid Gooner @ 160: It is not necessarily the deathbed, but the concept of death itself — our own individual death as others’ deaths remain to a certain extent abstract, however loved the others might be — is a great meditative exercise that encourages humility and compassion. Or so I have found, but I cannot speak for others.
Anyway, on to football, Arsene has clarified that Jenks and Debuchy would compete as neither can be expected to play 50+ games. We will see what pans out regarding this whole Manquillo rumor.
Thanks SAG
You wouldn’t believe what I was doing at the time I posted that comment. That’s not important now.
One thing I will say is that some of the knee jerk reactions to it shows some of what is wrong with the world today. Some even described that comment as black humour whatever that is supposed to mean.
For the record i have been having a go at people who are making false accusations, not because they are in disagreement.
Lurky @ 163: Was just thinking about recommending a couple of new-ish Latin American novelists — both happen to be from Colombia — that I thought you would enjoy. If you haven’t already read them.
Juan Gabriel Vasquez and Laura Restrepo . I have started reading them recently. Not unimpressed. 🙂
DF @ 164
Everything you say was taken into account when I said what I said. But tonight has been a revelation of how the mind works. Not for myself of course. I already knew.
NBN @ 161: Was driving back from a short day trip and was listening to the BBC world services News in Satellite radio. Those were exactly the order of news that came.
The question remains how many of these tragedies and sufferings were avoidable. Most of them, actually, if we think about it.
GT – See how that works? In the absence of actual human contact and a voice, words on a screen can be interpreted in many ways. Whereas you have stated that your original comment (86) was meant as a serious recommendation, others interpreted it as an attempt at a joke or “black humor”. In a similar vein, you interpreted my comment (135) as a sincere request for a recommendation, when I actually wrote the comment as carefully-worded, mocking sarcasm.
I plead guilty. 😉
GT – I guess I should also apologize for my misinterpretation of your original comment.
Fact is, the very thought that there could be any connection between the two Malaysian Airlines flights is too scary to contemplate for most people. It is not unreasonable to ask the question whether they might be related, however. In my opinion, having conducted my lengthy investigation, on the other hand, the only person who had both the motive and the capability to bring down the plane over the Ukraine-Russia border was Putin. Please feel free to say I am barmy, which I am. Did we sign anybody else yet. 🙂
GT – I should also add that given the number of the drinkers at the bar with connections to Amsterdam/Netherlands and Malaysia, a bit of sensitivity may be appropriate but I will leave that up to you decide.
rise of china and decline of western influence—>ukraine, gaza, syria, iraq, chelsea, shitty, liverfowls??
too much…jus want us to win the title again!!! much easier that clamouring for world peace…very sad. salute Monsieur Debuchy!
Thoughts are with those who lost their lives on board of the Malaysian Airline to Kuala Lumpur earlier today. May their souls rest in piece!
Debuchy great signing! By the way!
behind the 8 ball but gunning for glory
And yet being Polish they say Smolensk was the same!
ATG. Of course my sympathies for the victims of both disasters. All three including Smolensk. When there is no conclusive investigation or perpetrator brought to justice the victims are left with drawing straws as to the definite cause. We all owe it to the victims to conduct the investigations and to pay attention to what they reveal.
Some things will never be revealed to the public eye it would on many occasions cause mayhem and yet again another loss of the innocent trying only to find answers, after all who are we to ask questions? It’s like jungle out there I have a gun I’m the boss around here.
I’m not pointing fingers out here but someone has to be held responsible for this, those pictures are there and they are telling you the whole story! I can not imagine what those families are going through now. Funny enough I flew with those guys to visit my sister in Oz few years back. I was planning to take my whole family one day! Makes me sick this could still be going on in 21st century!
It is absolutely staggering there are people out there who don’t give a complete fuck about the others and would press a button just for the fun of it or shall I say because they thought it was a Ukrainian transport flight full of spies.
Sorry guys rant over…..

186 – what a remarkable thing to say about that money hungry mercenary after watching Aaron Ramsey last year. You want the best midfielder in the world, look no further than our own.
Forward
Some action last night I see. Poltics, grief junkies, and being the moral compass of others not really drinking companions for me, so I’ll skip over that. As with any fraught topic though, just remember what Arsene said, there are always two sides in a debate, “stupidity is just louder.” (Would be a terrible shame to censor those who don’t conform to the majority; basing the validity of your stance on that is an insidious method.)
What is the transfer news?
Sanchez: done deal. Nothing new for a few days and a week of Debuchy will be announced today. Then yesterday, Debuchy: done deal. Is there anything left to glean from the noise about, or should we just hunker down for Saturday and let the smoke clear?
All that’s out there right now is that we want a keeper and midfielder. That was obvious. Every goalie link so far has been someone 23-27 range who would be taking a step up coming to Arsenal. Someone for whom challenging Schez would be an opportunity. I like it. Whilst we know how good our number 1 is, I’m not convinced an incoming keeper would see he position as unattainable. Our boys reputation is certainly not untouchable outside our fan base, whether it should be or not.
Midfielders? Who knows. Someone is coming. Super Tom, Arteta, Flamini all in the process of winding down contracts and there appears to be little coming through to replace the latter two. TR7 will may already have replaced with Gnarby and Zelalem.
If that’s our business, we will have replaced Bac, Flappy, and NB52k and added a midfielder… Sanchez is a huge upgrade obviously and we will see who else is added to our spine, but we are talking about basically a par summer there. We have improved. All of our rivals have also. 4 team title chase this year, two from London, two from Manchester. Another attacker would be nice. Only 3 players scored double figures last year. That’s in all competitions. Sanchez won’t bridge the 40 goal defect to the champions of last year alone. I’d still fancy us to win the title though, as I did last season.
Forward
@157 – plenty of stools to go around mate. Love it. That would be a superb summer’s business 🙂

Morning
I walk back in here with my head held high knowing what I said and what I meant.
Although the reasoning behind the yellow card was wrong, I will accept it as my first in over four seasons in the bar. That is purely because all good captains must take one for the team every now and then.
Those who were under any illusion before yesterday now knows, I am Goonertown and my anthem is:
“He’s firm but he’s fair, he’s firm but he’s fair…”
Please do not all sing at once !
Now back to the Arsenal
Morning GT – Got any news? Tumbleweed out there so far today as far as I can see :/
ECG @ 169
I appreciate your gesture. But I am actually one of the few males in the world who can multi – task. I can assure you, I knew exactly what you meant.
Hi El @ 194
Yes, tumbleweed indeed.
Big Ivan actually popped his head out of the busy office after setting Debuchy free and I am sure I heard him say something about a keeper – ahem!
DM to follow. Incognito 😉
Just taken a back drink. Thank you for the gestures guys. It takes real men and women to put their hands up.
As you all know, I am not shy when it comes to admitting when I am wrong.
But when I’m right I’m right godamn it! 😉
*smashes a wodfull of cash in Arsenal currency and places a tab down in the bar today, in light of the current circumstances.

Misses golden opportunity
Just a point to note.
Sami stands to earn 91,000 pw max if he stays at RM.
So does he join a declining team for financial reasons or does he join a team on the up for footballing reasons?
If it were me, I know which on I’d choose.
Conclusion = If we want Sami he is within reach. If we choose somebody different, it will be because they are a better option not worse.
Apparently Sniderliens stats dwarf that of Sami’s, if stats is your thing
@ 200
Misses?
Comments from Arry regarding Loic Remy:
“I think he really wants to play Champions League football next year somewhere.
“We gave him time off after the World Cup but I think he’s really looking to move. I would be surprised if he was at QPR at the start of the year.
“If he goes to the right team, he’s capable of scoring 15 to 20 Premier League goals next season.”
This is believed to rule out the Spuds!
GT – what do you make of Remy?
Not as exciting as a “super quality” striker, but lots of top level experience. Only ever scored more than 20 goals in a season once in last 7 years. Looks like a decent squad player, but is filler what we need? I guess Arsene and BIG Ivan will know.
Forward
El @ 204
I trust those who brought us Ozil and Sanchez.
Truthfully? A bigger threat would have much more of a psychological effect on bigger teams.
But as a squad player, yes.
Time to find another bar.
Cheers.
http://m.goal.com/s/en-ke/news/4966622
very interesting
They did the draw for the CL qualifying round prior to ours:
Zenit v AEL Limassol
Dnipro v FC Copenhagen
Feyenoord v Besiktas
Grasshoppers v Lille
Standard Liege v Panathinaikos
If Zenit win their tie, we can get Athletic Bilbao plus the winners of the other four ties above. If Zenit lose, we can’t get Bilbao and AEL plus the winners of the other four ties would be possible opponents.
Wow 2 Newcastle supporters perished as part of yesterday’s atrocities
Strange, yesterday you didn’t want that discussed in an Arsenal bar ?
What is your point Trev, because I can feel another yellow card coming on?
Goonertown@211.
This may not be Trev’s point, but I for one would be interested to know how you reconcile your posting @209 with yours @105: “If you want to weep about planes falling out of the sky, then a news site is your place. Not a goonerholic bar”.
Actually, on second thoughts, I wouldn’t be interested to know how you reconcile those postings. A period of silence might be appropriate.
Pangloss
Is your life really that sad?
Trev and GT,
you are both rock solid arsenal supporters and both enjoyable contributors here in your different ways.
We can all enjoy arsenal and this site in our own way and put our thoughts forward for a few moments be they right or wrong.
A fellow gooner on here once gave me some good advice when I was banging the same drum…
Time to move on fellas
Cannons outwards for the Big season ahead.
Pre season starts soon and we will have plenty of real arsenal stuff for all.
Have a tipple on me Aussie!
Fences to be repaired. Bridges to be rebuilt. We don’t need to go to the Home Depot for the supplies.
We have everything we need, in our hearts, to get these tasks done ♥
Plenty of tipple to go around abb
Football as the topic for debate club please.
Arsenallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll tomorrow, oh how good does that make me feel.
Pre Season, time to see the boys again. Believe it will be a lot of fun and getting into the groove.
Of course need to wait a bit longer to see Alexis, maybe he will learn a trick or two when he meets the original king in NY next week.
Transfer window still a month to go, so expect the rumbling to drag on for the DM, now that khedira seems to be off, the focus has shifted to Bender/Schneiderlin. Maybe i can thrown in a name to- Javi Martinez.
Pangloss,
That was exactly my point.
You have rendered any further comment from me redundant – and for everyone’s sanity I shall make none.
Thanks Trev. I too shall foreswear further comment.
Not forgotten; not forgiven.

So looking forward to the pre-season now, starting with this Saturday. Available live on the Arsenal Player.
I think Diaby will start and would impress massively. In his last interview Arteta had said how much he would love to have Diaby a full season and really showcase his abilities. As many players before him had said with admiration, in training apparently he looks absolutely awesome.
If Diaby stays fit for a season — I know, I know — and we get a top class DM that would be a midfield comparable to, actually better than, any other club’s.
In Theo’s absence I think Jack would start on the right. He looked rather useful playing on the right a few occasions last season and I think it would improve his abilities to operate on small space and to learn when to release the ball.
Dr Faustus,
I got the point of one or two of your posts – well and subtly made.
There is a lot I could, and would quite like to say, but it is boring everyone and it is done.
See cba @224 – as usual, he got it straight away.
Have a good afternoon all.
Decent piece on arseblog about Bellerin. Talking him up for third choice and some kiddie cup action. Not bad for a 19 year old. Along with Akpom the most exciting yoof for me.
Chuba is the best though. A young Ibrahimovic IMO, could be the best English striker since they last ha anyone of genuinely continental stature. He is just wonderful every time I see him.
Forward
El Puno @ 227 — Cohen, teh song is called War, from “New Skin for Old Ceremony”.
El Puno, Chuba could be a handful, absolutely!
But we had said the same about JET first, and then hoped for the same for Afobe . Both faltered for different reasons, let us hope everything aligns well for the third time.
That Chuba Akpom really is something. Deadly finish off either foot, size, pace and just crazy flair. Real skill for a big man and nutty work rate to. I’d absolutely love it if arsene fucked off these clowns like Remy and promoted KING Chuba full time to the first team. Package Sonogo off on loan and roll with a frontline of giroud, Alexis, The Panther, KING Chuba and theo and Poldi in reserve. That would be exciting.
Very interesting preseason starts tomorrow.
Forward
DrF – its true, JET and Aneke the big letdown a for me, both looked to have the world at their feet.
I reckon KING Chuba scores goals like Cohen writes song though.
Peace 🙂
Yaya Toure??/ he who wants the cake and eat it to, no thank you. Yes he is a beast, probably the best in the league but then he whores around and in 2 seasons i am sure he will end up in PSG or Monaco.
I would love to see Javi Martinez here, i believe we enquired about him last season and were refused, maybe pep has lost his marbles and will agree this time around!!!!!!.
Chuba Akpom is a terrific prospect but all prospects needs to go through the grind and a loan deal to a PL team will be awesome for him.
In terms of Abou, i am certain he will have an extended play time at the start of the season, i believe he will play atleast 3 months for us this time around. He will be good as well but then the man is not destined for greatness as sadly injuries will take over again. I do pray he stays fit for in him we have a box to box player we so desperately seek. Remember this is his last season before his contract gets over and i think he will announce his retirement if he has one more injury. Sad end to a terrific talent.

Fingers crossed, fingers crossed …
His finishing has improved so much in the last couple of years rather looking forward to him latching on to through balls from Ozil or be at the end of those clever one-twos from Giroud .
Rambo-Ozil
Theo – Giroud – Sanchez
That is an attacking formation that has everything: pace, power, aerial abilities, cleverness on and off the ball, finishing, late runs into the box.
Keep them all fit, Arsenal!

Firstly our friend Brent Rodgers. None of my girlfriends ever left me because I was a poor lover. They left me because their new boyfriend lived closer to the bus- stop. Obvious.
As for my other point we get a lot of sarcasm about the fourth place trophy but if you don’t get CL football you have to pay ridiculous wages to get players or sign poorer places. Our record in qualifying for the CL is phenomenal given the financial constraints we’ve had.
Next season our team will show several world- class players-Koscielny, Ramsey, Walcott, Ozil, Sanchez and who knows who else because we play Champions League.

Mourinho claims that Fabregas never wanted to come back ‘home’ and that it took him 20 mins to convince the traitor to join them at the bus stop. At a loss for words. BT seems to be getting crappier by the day- Mourinho’s their ambassador. A perfect match.

There there, cba, don’t be worryin’ yoursel’ ’bout me red pen. It’s firmly holstered along wit’ me Paladin cards. Or I might have questioned you questioning the Homeric one’s ‘hear hear’, which was correct, not ‘here here’ which would have been incorrect. But I’m not buying into that, or the ’till’ word which, as I explained in a previous, came before ‘until’ so was never an abbreviation for it. No, I’m not going there.
But I must say that your taste in music is beyond reproach. It put me in a mind to turn off the radio accompaniment to this scrawling and pull out Stan Tracey’s Under Milk Wood suite. Now there’s a thought, aye.
Oh, and in the address stakes mine, in the early ’60s was:
(Me name)
The Priory
Leatherhead
Surrey
No I’m not from a religious background, The Priory had been converted to flats and I was renting one with my good friend Gordon Bennett. But that’s another story. Which ended, by the way, with him being buried in a Chinese temple overlooking the Indian Ocean on Christmas Island, where the natives bring him gifts of beer and cigarettes annually on the anniversary of his death in 1997. Such is their love for their hero. True story.
Öskar
Intently studies the correct pronunciation of Donegal thinking I might make it back there some day, as suddenly 36 years have run up since my one visit.
Far flung holics I am used to already Oskar but I believe the Christmas Island gentleman is deserving of joining the club posthumously to add to our farflungness if nothing else. Great story. 🙂
It was indeed a great story, btb, how Gordon Bennett fought the Australian government on behalf of the Christmas Island phosphate miners … and WON. A matter of local legend. Even if he did demise soon after of the bottle of scotch and two dozen beers and 60 cigarettes a day habit he had acquired.
And to think that when we shared a flat he was just a captain in our regiment, the 47th Yellow Cowards, victors of the Ya Wo River campaign and sundry native skirmishes. At least, that is what I remember of the time, but it was the ’60s…
Öskar
Gordon was more an alco- than a goner- holic. 🙁
Öskar
That shoulda been ‘gooner’ but the bluddy spell function kicked in before I hit submit. Mind you I guess goner is equally true in Gordon’s case.
Öskar
Hey holics.
Just spent a good two hours watching footage on Arsenal Player from our 2011-12 season. The 5-2 over Spurs, the last ditch Vermaelen goal vs. Newcastle, 5-3 at Stamford Bridge, 1-0 against Man City. Not sure why, just reliving those games a little bit. I was struck by how much better we’ve become in the last 2-3 years.
Let me put it this way. That season, our #17 was Alex Song, and our #11 was Andre Santos.
I can’t wait for this season you guys.
Goonsterham
Happy watching! We have a better AS than Song and Santos this season- Alexis Sanchez!

We knew we had nothing but somehow managed to revel in it. Now we know we have money, the pressure, from some quarters, is on.

Coquelin really wants a starting place in the first team…
Sanogo isn’t too sharp for a striker.. needs to go out on a loan.
Now that we have let Remy go, wonder if we’ll get another striker?!
BB – stole my post. He desperately needs regular games somewhere other than us.
Snide. Patronising. Condescending… Such clever behaviour :/
What was the point of moving to the new stadium? Anyone, why did we do it?
that was a nice way to start my morning. arsenal on my iPhone. and the second half with a coffee and a bun. zelalem seamless with aaron and toral. defense strong as needed, sanogo like a colt finding his legs; great cutback for toral, off the post.
Any score yet?
I say Sanogo on loan, keep Campbell simple as that. It doesn’t look like we are getting any other striker. If we are not willing to pay 8.5m for Remy, I doubt Wenger is looking at bringing in another striker. Poldi, Giroud, Alexis, Theo when he is fit and Campbell. That don’t look too bad at all.
Agreed on Campbell… forgot about him..heh 😀
Let’s get a proper DM instead!

Bellerin whipping in some tasty crosses.

GOOOAAALLL!
Who is Cris Olsen?!? 🙂
What a pass. Rosicky is pure class!!! Nice finish Olsen.
KING Chuba and Zelalem the class today. By a distance. Love to see them get some real games for the big boys.
El Puno is right.. they need to play some games in the top tier!
I love Jenks, really do, but Bellerin has so much more potential.
Much better with the ball, better positional awareness, more relaxed but at the same time more concentrated then Jenks, real attacking pacey full back.

Akpom looked so much better than the rest playing in the forward position…way better than Sanogo. Either loan to a PL team or maybe the 4th choice striker? Most likely a loan to another PL club.
The first team members looked all fit. TR7 effervescent and effective as always.
Bellerin caught the eyes. So much composure on the ball and such pace down the flank.
Ta bb.
Since we’ve all but given up on Khedira, is Schneiderlin any good??
Have not been following him i’ll admit..!
BB, Schneiderlin is great! I would say, just what we need. Calm on the ball, decent speed, impressive header ability, sprays accurate passes all over the pitch, great tackler, tactical awareness.
He plays more box to box for So’ton but I could imagine him becoming the next Busquets when Arsene put his magic spell on him.
Thanks Lurky!
He may be better than Khedira then, as he’s younger and probably less injury prone… Good News indeed if we are in for Schneiderlin!!
It does look like we are getting well stocked this time round, exciting times indeed.
😀
BB – I’d second that on schneiderlin, looks a beast and just what we need. Fingers crossed 🙂
BB, not sure if he is better then Khedira of course, not at the moment for sure, but, to me he looks more like an Arsene’s type of player then the German.
Lurky,
I meant that he may be a better option if we went for him than Khedira, mainly because he’s younger and thus can offer more and quite possibly injury free and less prone to injury, lest we forget Khedira got injured albeit from an old injury on a warm up session before the match! Thus he may not really be 100% fit as of yet, although oddly enough that does make him a prime candidate for us, he’ll fit right in our squad of old! 😀
@El puno am with you on Schneiderlin, I hope we go for him. Won’t cost us as much as Khedira. COYG!!!!!!!
393 – younger, more defensive minded, what’s not to like? 🙂
Clive / cba,
where did all this “my” lakes stuff come from ??
LOCAL lakes I said ! As in “owned by the local council !”
And as to “Rolls or Bentley” for the first home game ?
I haven’t decided yet 😉
BB, I agree, he would be better option then the older and injury prone Khedira, for me too, and if I am not mistaking Arsene rates him highly.
Right then.. there’s at least 4 of us that agree on Schneiderlin, I’d call that a majority,.. let’s sign him up Arsene! 😀
Bentley had a role in our first home game ?? Oh sorry that was a nasty moment. I think Trev will choose the Aston Martin.
2-0 against Zboreham Wood? Wenger aaahhhhttt
“It’s not over – there’s still a long way to go.”
BOOM.
BIG Ivan doing his thing. Sounds a lot like Verm is off to take his crocked whatevers somewhere and charge forward at every opportunity. Ho hum. AW “definitely” adding if that happens. We can certainly upgrade.
Just got to figure out this holding player and our new winger… Schneiderlin and Reus the sticky fantasy… Very sticky. ADM would be fun to, but ooooooooh Reus.

AW up to his nuts in this transfer business… Does that mean he’s like a spoilt rich kid, or his parents didn’t pay him enough attention, or that’s just modern football? Who knows, but it makes for great fun viewing it.

Interesting neither Gnabry nor Eisfiels were involved today. Probably nothing but could also be going out in loans? Hopefully not injured , both appeared in the pre-season training photos.
Reading between the lines in Arsene’s post-match interview, I would guess TV5 is off and we are getting a replacement . Who? 🙂
Semiu Ajayi

😀
Dr Faustus,
Arsenal Player were saying that Arteta and Gnabry are injured !!!
Don’t even ask ………….. 🙁
So, does beating lowly Boreham Wood mean that we are going to win the Premier League, or that Arsene Wenger should be sacked ?
No grey areas, please. 😉
Meant to say only 2-0 @043 🙁
DrF – I wonder who AW will look for in defence. I reckon we miss the BFG when he’s out more than anyone. He might not be our best defender, but probably our most indispensable IMO. Maybe someone of that stature? Either that or a younger player to groom, (if you can say that anymore.)

James Rodriquez is set for a £63m move to Real Madrid, according to reports from Spain.
… so this means they will sell someone ..no?
BB – yep. I still reckon we land ADM.
Imagine a first 11 of: the back 5, Ramsey, schneiderlin, theo, Ozil, ADM, Sanchez. Our nominal second 11 could play a midfield/attack of wilshere, arteta, AOC, santi, Poldi, giroud with flamini and rosicky as all around experienced back-up. #HubbaHubba etc
Eandy, as you are Czech you might know, I was just wondering is Rosicky maybe Benjamin Button in disguise?
The older he is, faster and sharper he gets.
lurky, he did look good, but remember, it’s only boredom wood.
same for chuba, though he looked on rozza’s level above bw’s team. I hope he is a gunner this year, if only for the cup runs.
Have to agree with comments re Akpom. I would love to see more academy players make the first team.
Regarding Schneidrlin, I have not had the pleasure of seeing him play. But I hear he is the real deal.
Good evening everybody.
A question to those who have better knowledge than me: Would it be possible (make any sense) to transform Jenks into a CB? He could learn from the very best right now for sure, but does he have what it takes?
Just read Wenger’s post match comments. It’s good to see that he is more upbeat than usual about strengthening. Good on him.
GT@413 – The vigil continues 🙂
