Lucas Aids Bubbly Gunners EFL Cup Quest
Sep 20th, 2016 by 'holic
The team doesn’t get revealed these days without a great deal of debate accompanying it on social media. The official Twitter account showed Emiliano Martinez surprisingly perhaps behind a back four of Ainsley Maitland-Niles (an attacking midfielder), Rob Holding, fit-again Gabriel, and captain for the night Kieran Gibbs. Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka were finally harnessed in front of that back four. Thereafter an interesting permutation of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Chuba Akpom, and Lucas Perez.
Early on the team settled into some semblance of a pattern with Reine-Adelaide on the right, Akpom on the left, and the Ox in the Mesut Ozil role. That left Lucas free to lead the line. The degree of flexibility that allowed us would hopefully see us in good stead as the match progressed.
The first real chance was gifted to Kasami when Gibbs and Holding were involved in a ninth minute mix-up but fortunately the Forest man placed his effort wide of the target. The twelfth minute round of applause for Brian Clough was accompanied by the first Gunners strike on target. Akpom’s rising drive was turned over by Stojkovic in the Forest goal.
Just past the quarter of an hour Nicklas Bendtner’s first contribution against his former club was to scythe through Gabriel long after the Brazilian had offloaded the ball. The subsequent yellow card was not disputed , nor could it have been. Generously we could assume his timing was out as this was his first start of the season for the Championship club.
Our first corner saw the Ox solve our long-standing problem of failing to clear the first man. We watched in awe as the twentieth minute set piece sailed over the last man. Moments later the other former Gunner, Henri Lansbury, was fortunate to escape censure for a dreadful over the top challenge on Elneny. Allowed to continue the move, Forest went close again as Bendtner’s drive just evaded the far post.
That seemed to stir the visitors and Xhaka, set up by the Ox, unleashed his second long-range thunderbolt in successive matches to put us ahead via the flailing hand of Stojkovic. Let’s pray we don’t coach that long-range strike out of the £35m new boy.
Forest 0-1 Arsenal
Nine minutes before the break Elneny sold birthday boy Rob Holding short and the the young centre-back was forced to take a yellow card for the team to prevent Kasami making progress. By and large though one would have to say that for a team that will only have played with each other on the training ground the Gunners were showing impressive control of the contest to this point, even allowing for the opposition.
Reine-Adelaide had noticeably come infield a la Ramsey in order to give Maitland-Niles the freedom of the right flank. We looked perhaps susceptible to the break but Forest carried little threat down their left, thankfully. An Elneny snapshot lacked the accuracy of his midfield partner, but served as a warning to Forest that we weren’t afraid to have further attempts from distance if given time and space.
In the minute before the break the Ox made a rapid break through the centre and found Akpom. He set up the fast-arriving Reine-Adelaide who placed his effort inches wide of the far post. The seemingly invisible (to the referee) Lansbury made another horrendous challenge on Gabriel. How on earth he was still on the pitch at half-time was anyones guess. There remained time for Martinez to comfortably cling on to a tame effort from outside the box by Bendtner.
Forest started the second-half brightly and Bendtner got clear on the left but his cross was wasted as none of his colleagues had attacked the box. Another minor Lansbury trip went unpunished, and quite rightly. Had the referee been alerted to his misdeeds at half-time? We will never know. When Reine-Adelaide was brought down on a direct run just outside the box Lucas was given a chance to open his Arsenal account, but he aimed his shot at a comfortable height for Stojkovic to grasp.
A period of attempted pressure by Forest was comfortably dealt with and temporarily held up by the Ox dragging a long-range strike from the inside-left channel wide of the mark. Arsenal had better luck when Lucas slid Akpom in and Mancienne brought the striker down with an ill-timed nudge. From the spot Lucas opened his account for the Gunners which was perhaps as much a relief for the travelling Gunners as it was for the £17m Spaniard.
Forest 0-2 Arsenal
Just past the hour Lansbury looked for and made contact with Gabriel once more. It is easy to see how he gets booked every other game. Four of the cat’s nine lives had now gone. The generous chant of ‘Super Nicklas Bendtner’ answered my preview question about the reception awarded to an ex one of our own.
Lucas proceded to show us just what we have got for our money when he sprinted clear down the left flank, cut inside and out-muscled Mancienne, rounded Stojkovic, and prodded the ball into the gaping goal before taking a cowardly whack from the late-arriving Mills. Cue wild celebrations from the travelling Gooners.
Forest 0-3 Arsenal
The hat-trick effort moments later didn’t look like beating Stojkovic, but Arsenal were again turning the screw and Cohen found himself in the book for a mistimed challenge on Akpom. Bendtner, cutting a forlorn figure by now, looked to be telling the bench he had a problem. The bench, perhaps considering it to be a psychological one waited for a few minutes before sending on Vellios in his place. The Dane applauded the travelling Gooners who again roared out his name in appreciation.
Lucas was again denied his hat-trick as the Gunners look to set the seal on the evening but Osborn had other ideas and brought a good save out of Martinez when he was freed by Lansbury. Chris Willock was given a debut in place of Akpom, and Gedion Zelalem got his chance for Reine-Adelaide with eight minutes left on the clock. Four minutes later Krystian Bielik came on to give Maitland-Niles the chance of an ovation for his evening’s work.
The Ox made one last effort to lay a third goal on a plate for Lucas but Mills was on hand to block the goal bound effort. The former Saint decided to take responsibility himself and finished assuredly after exchanging a one-two on the edge of the box with Lucas. It was a goal he deserved on the night and hopefully will give him some confidence.
Forest 0-4 Arsenal
And so Arsenal’s squad players and youngsters gave a very solid account of themselves against opponents who could have proved much trickier a test. The obvious candidates must be wondering how long before they make the step up. Elneny and Xhaka, whilst hardly extended, looked comfortable in each others company. Lucas may be considered as an option to Alexis up front if Giroud’s absence continues.
All in all, an enjoyable watch. The 4,000 travelling Gooners roared in agreement.

A 4-0 win with a team that is effectively a second string side is very satisfactory. It may be that Xhaka and Petez graduate soon but it’s interesting to compare the team we fielded tonight with the team that were so poor at Sheffield last year. We had worse injuries then but at the same time we had a much weaker squad.
And we have defied the might of TGSTEL
8 goals in two matches. Could be an interesting trend.
Rapid is not enough to describe your match summary, ‘holic. 😀
nice, holic. though i thought the second half we looked well better than the first, and truly in control. loved lucas’s application on his second. wish he could have gotten a hat-trick. ox redeemed his first half showing with that in the second half, by and large. maybe the jeff will show us what we missed not having an uninjured abou diaby. and cheers to chuba, active and lively until he subbed out.
Nice report Holic! You get quicker and quicker!
Well done!
Chelski 2-0 down now lead 2-4 against Leicester…
…Bring ’em On!!!
😀
“The bench, perhaps considering it to be a psychological one waited for a few minutes before sending on Vellios in his place.” No doubt. 😀
You’re getting so quick it’s as if you know the result beforehand! If that’s so, we’d better get on the Holic pound posthaste.
Cheers H. I was only 23 out with my prediction.
Just seen the goals on Sky, but that’s all I’ve seen. All seems quite comfortable in the end which I guess is all we can hope for.
Bigger fish to fry at the weekend. Frying fish???? That should wake up BtM?
Nice one, ‘Holic. Fastest post in the West.
I thought we looked for much of the game as disjointed as you would expect from a makeshift team but still had quality enough to deal with the opposition in front of us. Can’t say that anyone had a bad game, but the passing was sloppy by Arsenal standards.
If it is any sort of omen, the only two other times we have played Forest is the League Cup we have gone on to win the trophy. Forest has yet to score a goal against us in the competition, either. In fact, they have only scored in one of the six cup ties (FA Cup and League Cup) the two sides have played.
Gotcha Scruz, and your meaning. Mr Poker is 4-2-1 this season wout showing his best XI. Get laughed outta the Arms pub when i optimistically call pennant, but Arsene is onto something this yr. BOOM!
Impressive away victory with an equally impressive second string from the squad.
Lucas Perez = Jamie Vardy (with a Spanish accent)
UTA!
AFCOF!
cheers, ochi, and a drink on the bar for you. 🙂
Great perfomance by the sound of it. Goals looked quality but yet to see any more of the in depth highlights.
My Forest supporting mate just texted me to say that Arsenal were rubbish as they could only score four against them…
Lucas Aids Bubbly.
I see what you did there ‘holic.
Cheers H! Now bring on those mouthy cunts from the bus stop in Fulham. Gonna do them good style.
Thanks for the report Guvna. Didn’t see the game but sounds like you have found a good stream source. Delighted Lucas has got off the mark and Xhaka is establishing a pattern. Only 4 though? Diabolical. Who selected that team? Wonga aht!
Onwards.
No sign of coverage here in NZ. The only live games today were Foxes v Chavs and Derby v Poo. We got to see the gunnergoals during those two games.
Apart from one spectacular Rambo goal Xhaka is the best long ranger (credit ‘holic) we’ve had since the Verminator. I always thought TV5 would have made a decent DMF, but instead all he made was the bench at Barca.
Well that was a lot of fun. An away day to a proper old fashioned ground surrounded by terraced houses, over the road from the (rather spiffier) cricket ground. Nice curry before (and thanks to the lovely host who squeezed in a couple of gooners in colours without a reservation in a sea of Forest fans) and into the ground just as we kicked off. Proper away fan allocation, the terrace behind the goal. When we got there the Forest fans were the louder, giving it large about winning the European Cup about the time I was taking my finals at University (believe me that’s a long time ago). “You live in the past” we sang.
Just a couple of observations; Xhaka and Elneny bossed midfield, Holding looked so calm and composed, Perez works his arse off, is strong and can pick a pass as well as score, and I thought Chuba was terrific, especially as he is a 9 and not an 11. The movement was quick and all the goals were good, especially the icing on the cake from Ox via Perez at the end. Gabriel looked a bit rusty and took some fearful hammer from Lansbury.
Once the Xhaka rocket went in they got quieter and we got louder. The new Xhaka song (to Dave Clark Five’s Glad All Over) was sung again and again. Then, as the second half went on, the choruses of “Super Nicky Bendtner” just got louder and louder. He looked really touched and came over to acknowledge at the end (along with virtually all the Arsenal team, good to see). Smiles and more songs as we walked out into the night (makes a change from my last away game at Leicester when everyone was arguing with each other)
Easy walk to the car (thanks JustPark) and home around midnight.
I do enjoy the league cup, especially away from home. An away draw in the next round to a championship team with a large ground please!
Next up the Chavs and a team likely to have both Terry and Costa in. Should be loud and hostile on the North Bank!
Holic,
Great write up as usual.
Thanks for the link mate – the stream worked a treat..!!
I was most impressed by the overall performance, which showed great tenacity and application for a 2nd string. I thought this performance was so much different to ones in recent years because we didn’t just show promise or potential. We controlled the game entirely and there was a good mix of youth and experience in the side.
Xhaka continues to impress and I thought Perez really showed some steel and guile in his second goal. Its not usually the type of goal we score. But there’s a toughness about him, an edge, that I like along with his selflessness in linking up with others. I really think this lad is going to be a player and is seriously underrated as he quietly goes about his business.
Lovely write up Countryman100
” A proper old fashioned ground surrounded by terraced houses. ”
Now what does that remind me of. ?
Thanks, Holic, as I too have seen nothing yet.
Interesting that Maitland-Niles played at right back from where he was presumably able to launch double barrelled attacks all on his own. ?
I can’t understand all this praise for Lucas Perez – surely he can’t actually be any good at a mere £17.5 million …… ?
That wily old Wenger. ?
Countryman,
Sorry, forgot to add my thanks for a really nice atmospheric write up ????
I can’t understand all this praise for Lucas Perez – surely he can’t actually be any good at a mere £17.5 million …… ?
It was only Nottingham Forest 😉
This is worth a read
https://www.redbulletin.com/int/en/sports/why-football-is-a-form-of-suffering-not-entertainment
excellent ready, countryman. i went through much the same thing with basketball (though i couldn’t afford to go to many games as a kid, LA Laker ticket prices were always pretty high relative to what i could afford), when “showtime” hit in the 1980s. suddenly if the game is a defensive affair, or between two teams that are shit, it’s no good.
i think we, as arsenal supporters, have been terribly spoiled by arsene’s successes, especially in his early years. attractive football nearly on tap, and being shown to the masses worldwide on a developing platform that’s now ubiquitous. and our football has been shown to be nearly unbeatable, unless you throw tons of money at it, and hoard all the players you can afford. now we expect it, and as ochi called it it’s “click era perfectionism”.
i suppose i’m as guilty as the next person, though i have my laker experience to fall back on and 9 times out of 10 sit there biting my nails to the quick when we’re not winning…and sometimes when we are. i can’t go to games in england (being in california), but i do get up for damn near every game, and am happy to travel 45 minutes to our gooner’s club bar to watch. but we’re all spoiled as hell now, and the “contra” energy of The Clash and the working class nature of what was before has been saturated by prawns and all-seaters…not dissimilar to what has happened to nba games.
and so those who grew up in the terraces get bored and feel less passion for their club, and feel angry/sad/whatever about it. i’ve seen it here in the drinks, not least. it’s hard when what we love deeply changes to something we don’t recognize as clearly, nor identify with the same way we did in our “red Brutus, navy Crombie, and navy Sta-Prest with black brogue” days. we’ve all had those days, being from england or not, and we can’t go back to them, sadly. but we can move forward, and it’s why i love this place: even permeated by the sadness/anger/grief of that loss, so many here are able to still feel that deep joy, and share it (a la countryman’s 20 above, thanks for that).
so cheers, all, a round is on the bar for anyone who’d like. and so soon after celebrating a decade here, holic, thank you again from the bottom of my heart for all your hard work. slainte!
Thanks in return scruzgooner, lovely piece.
Some quality drinking today lads. Cheers!
Ben Sherman, dark blue Harrington, grey Sta-prest, burgundy loafers…
Oh boy, smart & sharp. Those were the days.
Still is.

Well, waddyaknow? It’s almost exactly 20 years since Wenger arrived at Arsenal. There’s a long article in the Grauniad to mark the event.

Northampton Town equalise just before half time against Manure. Nice to see Mourinho’s Thunder face.
Scruz,
Excellent drink @27 – and all the best for your son, of whom you are clearly very proud ????
thanks, trev, for all of it. he’s a good person who should go far.
best to your erin, too.
Home to Reading next round.
Let’s not give them a four goal start this time. Poo v Spurs, Citeh v Manyoo
This is amusing!

TTG. We only give them a four goal lead when playing away. I hope. 😀
The local radio people have come up with a name for our recent season of wet weather, “the soggy summer of sixteen” and the forecast for the remaining few hours of summer is for near constant rain.
So I see “big club” Spurs could only attract 26,000 tonight?
Moaninho continues to amuse.
Apparently he’s blaming van Gargle for Manure’s poor form … http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/manchester-uniteds-jose-mourinho-blames-8877699 … while no doubt fearing the sack at any moment, he is still living in a hotel … http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3798944/Jose-Mourinho-follows-footsteps-Alan-Partridge-Manchester-United-boss-continues-hotel-stay.html
To be honest, I had no idea Xhaka could do that either.

Humble apologies – I’ve just seen that Pangloss @31 has already drawn your attention to this. Still – well worth reading!
Apparently Rambo will be out for a lot longer than first thought????
Would you believe it? Who would have thought that??
Aaron Who?
Great article about AW in the Grauniad, and thanks Pangloss and Countryman for the links.

Joe,
Well said.
Countryman,
Walker clearly is as thick as he looks. ?
Not sure which of the Arsenal Ladies are flirting with Hector in #12 of 16 of the club’s photoshoot pictures but judging by how gay (traditional definition) they all look it could be time to put him back on the straight and narrow:

Make that #11 of 14 now. Not sure if they took a couple of photos out or if I counted wrong the first time.

Drug test the lot of them.. clearly his statement is evidence of the fact.
On another note, the league cup is getting interesting looking at the draws…

joe, a perfect 50. i *really* can wait to hear, in five years from when mr. wenger is gone, the moans of the disaffected when the new manager doesn’t (a) get us to the champions league, (b) win us a trophy, (c) buy the right players at the right time for the right amount, and (d) etc., etc., etc.
bt8, he’s clearly the center of attention, there. even with debuchy backing him up 🙂
i really, really hope tottenham stay deep in all four competitions until their usual bottle arrives, and they crash and burn, forcing poch to move on…

You can make this stuff up
Football France is a web site which basically takes the piss out of football private eye style. So they run a made up story about why Lyon backed off from taking Adebayor to replace the injured Lacazette. They joke that the Togolese striker turned up for his job interview with a fag hanging out his mouth and pouring a shot of whiskey into his coffee.
The Sun and the Daily Mirror fall hook ,line and sinker

The Sun seems to have taken down the link to the Ade article but the Mirror link persists. Or vice versa. Either way they will probably both be hit with libel lawsuits.

My money’s on Arsene.
😀
Maureen really is a contemptible little piece of ordure. ??
I do think the tide is turning against Maureen and others are beginning to see him for the loathsome narcissist he really is. Matt Dickinson of the Times on Twitter
“Mourinho 13 games against Wenger without defeat. But he still manages to lose every time he talks about the Frenchman”
I read BB’s link, slightly against my better judgement – I think links to the Maily Dail website ought to carry a health warning – and was rather disturbed by it.
The Psychotic One comes across much as I expected, but I was unable to work out what the author of the piece thought. He is keen to show what a close relationship he “enjoys” with the odious Portuguee, and yet he includes the quote about meeting Wenger on the street and breaking his face.
My views on Arsène are well known – he doesn’t know everything, but he knows much more than me, and probably must on her, and as far as I can see, better than most of the available alternaives. I’d be interested to know the opinion of those less convinced than me whose glasses are likely to be less rose-tinted. If anyone can direct me towards any literate Manchester Rowdies or Chel$ki sites, I’d be curious to know the reaction of their fanbases to the article and the quote.
COYG
Damn these fat fingers.
First sentence, third paragraph should read “… probably most on here…”
I hope the intended meaning of any other typos is clear from the context.
COYG
Pangloss,
I’ve never ventured there myself but Red Cafe is the Man Utd fan site that those I know tend to look at.
Re Arsene, I think this summer’s transfer dealings in the midst of a truly ridiculous window, have shown that he is still a very calm, experienced hand, trying to add quality to his squad in the face of unbeatable financial opposition.
It’s frustrating at times but he has to do the business while we imagine what he should be able to do. Xhaka, Elneny, Perez, Mustafi and Cech look like a decent 12 months’ work in hindsight.
I did get very angry about Kroenke’s expressed objectives at the end of last season, and I do think that bit of extra investment would make a huge difference at times.
That is not the way the owner chooses to operate though, and that is his prerogative.
Having said that, if you add Sanchez and Ozil to the list above, it is an inpressive collection. Even more so when you look at what Man Utd and Chelsea have spent and the state they are in.
Has Wenger made mistakes ? Yes.
Is he perfect ? No more than any of us.
One test you could apply though, is to imagine you wake up tomorrow morning and the headlines read “WENGER QUITS ARSENAL”.
There seem to be plenty around who would be only too pleased.
Not me.
I’d be more worried about Kroenke selling to that Nigerian chap than Wenger going.
Thanks, Trev. Some time on Republik of Mancunia failed to find anything relevant.

Cunterry to miss Arsenal game due to ankle injury.
Don’t worry. They still have Costa not to mention a few others like Ramires to come on and give us a stamp or three.
No one will be surprised about Maureen. He is a classless cunt. I don’t know many that think otherwise. If he fails with the mancs then his reputation will be shot to bits. I’m loving the way that it’s now all LVG’s fault now.
In other news I’ve just had an e mail from the club telling me that there are tickets still available for the Basel game. I can’t say I’m surprised. The champions league is a strange competition. It’s great when you get to the quarter final stage but the majority of games prior to that are a non entity. PSG are the obvious draw in our group. Basel or Ludogorets midweek hold little to no appeal for me I must say. Especially if we are going to play a weakened team.
Right, on to CSKA Fulham. For once a change in kick off to me actually helps me out. May have to celebrate with the odd scoop or two.
I’ve spent a little time on Red Café, thanks again for the pointer, Trev.
They are running a thread there about the “Mourinho…break his face” story. The general consensus seems to be that Mourinho is a khunt (a local spelling, apparently) but that he’s their khunt. I recall a similar judgement here on van Persie’s off-pitch persona following his departure. There are certainly some there who would be happy for any success that the Odious One brings them, would be happier if someone else brought it and aren’t certain that another would bring as much.
In the course of my perambulations – I was waiting while VW fixed my car so it would lie less about fuel consumption – I ploughed through the “Let’s all laugh at Arsenal” thread on Republik of Mancunia. I think there were a couple of posts that made me smile. The thread included a lot of ire directed at Piers Morgan – sounds familiar – and a link to an article on AFC Camden, entitled “Why Arsene Wenger’s legacy will be greater than Sir Alex Ferguson’s”. I don’t recall hearing of that blog before, and feared the worst as I went to check it out, but as I recall, the piece was fairly well-written and made an honest attempt to justify its headline. As you might expect, the reaction at RoM wasn’t one of universal agreement. I fear the interface on AFC Camden is such that I won’t be going there regularly, at least not on Android.
My lasting impression from the two ManYoo sites was that the contributors there were a bunch of one-eyed rose-coloured spectacle wearing fairly genuine football fans. This too feels familiar, obviously they are wrong, but there but for the grace of God…
If anyone can recommend a site populated by similarly genuine fans of the small club in Fulham, I’ll go and have a look for reaction there.
COYG
Thanks ‘H – or deputy.
Link to the AFC Camden article for anyone (still) interested.
Amazing climax to the (Cricket) County Championship today. Middlesex win it – their first title for 23 years – now that’s a long time!
Climax was amazing because going into the last round of matches, three teams could win it, Middlesex and Yorkshire, who were playing each other, and Somerset. Somerset won in three days (of four allowed) meaning that if either Middlesex or Yorkshire won their match they would take the title, if the match was drawn Somerset would take the title.
Howay the lads.
