Poldi Still Packs Der Hammer
Mar 23rd, 2017 by 'holic
So, extremely tired, I thought I would watch Germany playing England last night. I have taken to not watching them all the time now because frankly watching England in 2017 reflects watching Arsenal in 2017. They rarely play attractive football and psychologically they are way below the level they need to be at.
However I don’t mind admitting to enjoying the performance, and the match, rather more than I expected. For an hour I thought England were by far the better side and if Vardy or All could finish we could have been two or three up. Germany, being Germany, punished us for letting them off the hook with a solid end to the contest.
The game was played in the spirit of a testimonial for that once a Gunner, always a Gunner, Lukas Podolski. Following several sighters he scored the sensational goal the German crowd wanted so much and even I cheered. I know Arsene Wenger lost faith in him for his laissez-faire attitude to tracking back but we couldn’t help but take the smiling Poldi to our hearts. When in the mood he was also a wonderful finisher, and last night showed he still packs a thunderous shot on him.
The only downside to the evening was another boorish display by a number of the travelling England contingent. I wonder how many of them will be foolish enough to repeat such scenes at Moscow 2018? Thank you to the good folk of Germany who lit up the Brandenburg Gate in the colours of the Union Jack following the events in Westminster yesterday. The vast majority of English people were repulsed by the few hundred mindless idiots who spoiled an otherwise excellent occasion.
Anyway, all in all that was an encouraging start for Gareth Southgate and I may just watch England again on Sunday against Lithuania. It’s a shame it’s ten days until Arsenal have a chance to show they can produce a surprisingly good performance against Manchester City.
It’s going to be a long ten days.

Whoever invented international football wants shooting. Although I suppose he’s dead anyway.
Let’s resurrect him just so we can kill him again.
We could always hang some FIFA executives in effigy, Cynic.
I despise these interlulls (but still enjoyed that Poldi strike last night).
Poldi’s smile. It’s still the mutts. I miss him, really.

Gotta love Ivor Cutler, cba. One from my Weirdo File … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfONxAeuOPg

It was the lyrics and Linda Hirst vocal that had me filing it under weirdness, cba. I didn’t even realise Cutler was involved when I first came across it. Perhaps eccentric would be a better word. 🙂
Ttg@108 in the previous drinks: Tks for the explanation. Lots of moving pieces in there to make work together successfully.
To your point about Zidane, Ttg, he was carefully prepped by Real Madrid: a year spent as ‘sporting director’, then a year as manager of the youth team, a year as assistant coach of the first team, a year and a half managing the B team before being given the first team job. So almost five years from start to taking over as manager. Were a similar plan to be followed for TH14, that could still give AW a year or two plus a three-year spell for a big-name successor.
Nice one Guvna. Flicked between that game and the extremely low quality Scotland one. Fortunately caught Poldi’s rocket. I miss that smile too (and der hammer) but he simply didn’t have the stamina for the PL.
Hey holic. I also miss Poldi’s ability to add the fourth feelgood goal in the odd 4-1 victory. Giroud is capable of doing the same and flashing a smile but has been in a Poldi-like box recently. 🙁
Ranieri awarded the golden bench award in Italy. Sure hope the pigeons don’t foul it.
When I was young ,international matches were played on midweek nights leaving the real football for Saturdays at 3 pm.
They changed this I believe to make our national teams chances of winning international competitions better.
Well,that has not worked then.
I think the only times we reached finals or semi finals was before this change.
So bring back the proper football at 3pm on Saturdays and while you are at it ,goalies in green and refs in black please.
FIFA changed it to double headers in a week so we’d have fewer interlull disruption, but it only made the ones we do have interminable.
If they played the World Cup like the FA Cup, as a knockout, it could be got over in nine days. Bottom ranked 128 countries in Round 1, next 64 lowest come in for Round 2. Rounds 3 and 4 reduces them to 16. The top ranked 16 countries then come in for Round 5. Round 6 is the last 16, Round 7, the quarters, Round 8, the semis and Round 9 the Final. That doesn’t require too many interlulls over four years, and in England’s case probably just one.
Poldi ,Arshavin and maybe to a lesser extent Perez are players who just dont seem to be in Arsene’s good books. Talent wise, they were/are good but it just may be the attitude or even questioning the authority that may have prevented them from being a success at the Ems.
Most indications are a 1 year contract being agreed by the boss. I for one cannot understand the duration or even the extension. I adore him but he needs to go. The sense around Arsenal is toxic. We have become a mockery for a lot( ashley shit cole included), the fans are an excuse and the players even worse. Blaming all this only on one man is unfair but if we need to stem the rot and clean the system, it starts from the top. of course the owners wont leave a cash cow but the football team needs a major overhaul and Arsene is not the man for it. He is too nice, protective and stubborn to be able to do it.
The problem is the board. They do not want to lose their safety shield and minimum guarantee in Wenger. We should have planned for his succession far earlier than now and even now they are going back to being safe than bold. Arsene is by far the greatest but even the greatest call time; do it boss or else the abuse and disrespect will continue which is a terrible thing to happen to a great man.
Jesus Ireland v Wales tackles flying in I think Taylor just broke Colemans leg!
Ref should have had the game under control he allowed the to play this way!
Broken leg for sure… very scary!
🙁
Any manager worth his salt would tell Taylor he’s not going to play for his country again, at least under him, after that.
Saw the tackle again and Taylor goes to to block a cross a bit too close to Coleman looks very bad in the end.
If TH14 is the answer, what was the question again? Lovely guy, great playerm but can’t say I have agreed with much he has said as a critic in recent years and would be happier to see PV4 in the frame, if this is how it’s going.
But still prefer Allegri or Tuchel or Pep (if he’s tiring of the sheiks).
“Neil Taylor is not really that type of player” what again?
There must be lots of “that type of player” about in the game, but they never seem to snap anyone in half do they?
Just once I’d like a manager to go, “Yeah, he’s a proper headcase who’s got away with it up to now but he’s going on the list on Monday morning. Because he IS that type of player”
Goin’ to Chicago for the end of the Interlull.
Vinay@19: Poldi, Arshavin and Perez all seem to be players best suited to playing in a 4-4-2, which is a formation AW hasn’t favored since 2011.

Apologies for the server outage. Not sure how long it was as was on Mothers Day duty today. It has been kickstarted with a lump hammer.
It’s a pity we didn’t have a power outage during England v Lithuania. That’s 90 minutes of our lives we won’t get back. It was utter shite. Only positive comment I have is that young Keane would be an excellent summer investment if we can unload Mustafi.
I’d then play three at the back with Kos and Holding next season.
So Giroud doesn’t care about winning titles and Ozil is “comfortable” at Arsenal.
Joy.
