Arsenal Spot On To Beat Bayern And Emirates Cup Tickets
Jul 19th, 2017 by 'holic
Shanghai provided a day of mixed blessings for the touring Gunners. A number of players were laid low by a spot of food poisoning which forced the late withdrawal of Per Mertesacker from the fixture against Bayern Munich.
The Arsenal went into the match with Petr Cech starting behind a makeshift back three of Kristian Bielik, Mohamed Elneny, and Nacho Monreal. Young Ainsley Maitland-Niles and newly signed Sead Kolasinac were the wing backs. Francis Coquelin accompanied Granit Xhaka in the centre of midfield, while Mesut Ozil was the creator in chief behind a pairing of Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette.
The Bayern side, apart from the third choice goalkeeper, looked very familiar. They included recent signing from Real Madrid, James Rodriguez. Not surprisingly they started the match somewhat better than the Gunners in the humid climate. James was first to test Cech but fired his effort into the side netting. In the next attack the dangerous Muller also fired wide of the target.
Arsenal fashioned a response when Kolasinac, Ozil, and Welbeck combined to set up Xhaka who blazed the ball over from the edge of the box. We were behind in the ninth minute when the referee awarded a penalty against Maitland-Niles when Bernat threw himself to terra firma. Lewandowski blasted the penalty high to Cech’s left. It looked ominous at this point.
Welbeck’s glorious through ball put Ozil clear but the midfielder’s volley hit Starke in the Bayern goal. At the other end Monreal had to be at his sharpest to deal with a low cross in the centre of the six yard box. Coquelin, perhaps not surprisingly, earned the first yellow card of the contest when he sent Ribery tumbling. Moments later we survived a second Bayern goal when Tolisso was wrongly flagged offside as he stroked the ball home at the far post. Martinez found himself in the referees book for his show of dissent that followed.
As Arsenal appeared to get more into the match the referee signalled a drinks break as the half hour mark approached. That was a sensible precaution in thirty degrees. Immediately Ozil slid a pass into Lacazette but Starke was equal to the attempt.
In the minutes leading to the half-time whistle we had Cech to thank for keeping the score at 0-1. The goalkeeper made outstanding saves from Bernat, and James. Kolasinac, struggling to keep up with play was substituted, possibly another victim of the food bug. Another youngster, Reiss Nelson, got an unexpectedly early opportunity to impress. The last chance fell to James again, but Xhaka produced a wonderful clearance right in front of the goal.
Typical of the tour so far a number of changes were made at the break. The Arsenal brought on Alex Iwobi for Ozil, Joe Willock for Francis Coquelin, Theo Walcott for Lacazette, and Cohen Bramall for Bielik. Yet again the first opportunity fell to Bayern and James was again denied by an excellent Cech save. Elneny was unlucky to receive a yellow when he appeared to be felled by Tolisso, the Bayern man coming out of the challenge the worse. Alaba’s free-kick drew yet another diving save from Cech.
Just past the hour Aaron Ramsey came on for the excellent Xhaka. Almost immediately Cech raced from his area to beat Ribery to a through ball almost forty yards out. The man of the match made way for Emi Martinez with twenty minutes remaining. That would prove to be a significant change. Eddie Nketiah also came on for Welbeck as bodies tired.
With Bayern also having made a considerable number of changes the young Gunners went in search of an equaliser. Walcott cleverly found space on the left edge of the area but his curling effort was comfortably saved by the substitute goalkeeper, Fruchtl. Joe Willock, a little tiger in midfield, was next to find himself in the referees book for a trip on a breaking Dorsch.
Just as it looked as though we would finish a beaten side we produced possibly the move of the match to level the scores in the last of four added minutes. Iwobi got on the end of a Ramsey cross to head home having sent the Welshman clear on the left hand side. That set up a penalty shoot out that caught many supporters unawares.
What odds on us beating a German team, particularly Bayern, on penalties? That’s just what we did though. Martinez saved the first spot-kick although the advantage faded when Elneny saw Fruchtl save our second penalty. We nosed ahead again when Sanchez smashed their fourth penalty against the crossbar and Iwobi capped a fine performance by scoring his.
That left Bernat needing to score to keep Bayern alive but Martinez threw himself to his left to save and the Gunners had pulled off an unlikely triumph. At this stage of the season we should not read too much into that, however the youngsters in the squad deserve the plaudits for their part in a courageous comeback.

Looks like a good team spirit building up. The youngsters in particular looked well chuffed to beat Bayern, even in a friendly.
Who ordered the lasagna?
arsenal has to do a lot on the transfer and training before the start of next season to challenge and beat a big named team ,we could have been trashed by a lot of goals had it not been for peter check and disallowed goal.
A good result but of course it’s just a warm-up, hopefully
that starting back 3won’t be the back 3 for the start of the season 🙂
and so no point reading anything into it really. Nice for the youngsters as C100 mentioned, that’s beating Bayern ticked off the list for some.
Woj seemed a bit choked to be leaving and said some nice
things about the club. Shame he didn’t make it, but to be fair
I thought he had enough chances.
Lo Mein Gate out of the way in an early pre-season training game. Our timing, if not our digestive powers, is impeccable. 🙂
Going to be an interesting season.
with most of top clubs with new strikers.
Lukaku to Utd
Lacazette to the Arse
and now Morata to Chelsea.
With Aguerro at City and Kane at Spuds, that’s some serious goal scoring talent.
But as always it’s about who of the above can create something out of nothing and score the goals that matter when the team is struggling, that will be of most value to their respective Clubs.
There seems to be some talent coming up through the ranks. Just because they didn’t cost £50 million doesn’t mean they are no good.
If Martinez is going to be the No 1 after Cech retires, I hope he gets a solid run and doesn’t end up being Woj 2.0.
Not forgetting we have Giroud, Clive, and Alexis (or another from Monaco?)
We’re not finished yet, but I have a great deal of optimism about the coming season.
To be fair i think I did a couple of years ago too. 🙂
Nice review, ‘holic. I streamed the game through YouTube and I think we pretty much saw the same game.
I like your use of “The” Arsenal ?
Noted H
But i was thinking more of the players that are at the pointy end of the attack whose only job is to convert the chances .
Alexis wasn’t included because he is multi functional across several positions.
As for Ollie,if he accepts a subs role, then he is in his comfort zone.
If he really wants to play regularly he has to go somewhere else.
Agree there is more to come on the incoming transfer front, preferably humble, talented and hungry.
Optimism and hope are boundless at this time of year.
The sales machine is in full swing and I was disappointed to see Elneny was allowed to talk to Leicester for only £10 million. He turned the offer down. I suspect we will unload Debuchy, Jenkinson, Ospina, Wilshere and maybe Chambers ( although I hope not) .
We need to consider midfield because Ramsey will never stay fit all season and Coquelin is a journeyman. I’d keep Giroud and Walcott if necessary.
“…but I have a great deal of optimism about the coming season…”
I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore
I was one caught out by the penalty shootout, having switched off at full time (about 1.30am NZ time). But frankly I’d seen enough and went to bed surprised but happy we had drawn despite playing like it was a Hackney Marshes kickabout – full of enthusiasm and adventure but little team coordination.
Hopefully it was the stir-fried salmonella chicken and double steamed sunstroke conditions that were chiefly responsible.
Nice to check in here and find we actually beat Bayern who played an arguably more regular team than we did to boot.
Now for the Cup Final reprise. If we have anyone fit to play.
Cup Final reprise AND Community Shield prelude!
Cheers H! Big Up Peter Check.
TTG@10: I’d sell Gabriel before Chambers. Every club needs three keepers so Ospina will probably stay (unless Jens has secretly been signed to be the veteran back-up…). The Jeff and Joel Campbell also seem to be in the for sale list. What about Perez and Akpom?
I know the football world has gone mad, but, seriously … “The French club are willing to trigger the Barcelona and Brazil star’s release clause of €222m (£196m), pay a signing on fee of £45m and offer a five-year deal worth £596,000 a week after tax“.
That’s for Neymar of course, but could it be anyone in a few years? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4712150/PSG-ready-seal-world-record-196m-deal-Neymar.html
Elneny to Leicester for £10m would be a profit wouldn’t it? He’s obviously not good enough, in Wenger’s eyes at least, and if we’re either looking to upgrade or maybe even shift OX to central to keep him (and then still not play him anyway, meaning he’ll be agitating for a move next summer) it makes some sort of sense.
To the numpties doing our deals.
And we could have possibly had Morata for a small amount more than we paid for The Cassette… *sigh*
Thanks for the report Guvna. I only saw the last 20-25 minutes and thought we were toiling against a team that seemed better adapted to the torrid conditions and able to cut through us at will. At that point I thought we were doing well to keep it at 0-1 even without knowing about Petr Cech’s earlier heroics you detail above. Thus the equaliser came as a pleasant unexpected surprise. The penalty shoot-out win will have given several of the penalty takers (not our strongest suit last season) a wee boost and Emi Martinez a large boost. I have no problems with him being our man for the future if he keeps up his recent progress.
Meanwhile I await some more activity in the arrival and departure lounges.
I have not yet achieved your levels of cautious optimism, Guvna but if we have really added Clive as a striker (cf 7) then things may be looking up. ?
? bath ?
Personally, I think Morata a touch overrated and would rather
have Lacazette, certainly I don’t think Morata is the finisher the
odious Costa was and a downgrade for Chavski.
And I am optimistic for the new season too.
That’s all for now, must fly.
Dotty
Ned,
I agree that those four should go although Perez hasn’t had much of a chance in my view. Must be a story behind that. Joel is gone in the fetlock so may not be saleable.
I would promote Martinez and make him the goalie in Europe and the domestic cups. Ospina doesn’t convince me and lest we forget should have saved Costa’s goal at Wembley. I’d get a decent , experienced back- up keeper like Guzman or Green in to warm the bench.
A quick glance at the leaderboard tells me the Open could be shaping up as a battle between Manley and Henley. There is a joke in there somewhere but I can’t figure out exactly how to tell it.
bt8 don’t worry about not being able to tell jokes, Lenny Henry got a knighthood and he has the same trouble.
Heh @ Cynic.
Which came first the Henley or the Eggley or the Manley or the Womanley?
arise Sir Baff
?
Now that, bath, is a good one. Good thing I left it to you. 🙂
Must google Lenny Henry now …
I guess it’s too late to say DON’T DO IT, bt8!
Ignorance is bliss, in his case.
Cheers ‘H – SR waussie ‘e good, or wot!?! But nice to see you back in the saddle, where you billabongalongbelong

Having seen a picture yesterday of Jens Lehmann seated next to Arsene Wenger on the Arsenal bench yesterday, in Steve Bould’s customary seat, I wondered to myself, “I wonder where Steve Bould is.” Now there is an answer, which most of you already know I imagine, but as reported by ACLF today, “Bould, who suffered a hernia on his neck [… is …] back in Blighty recuperating.”
Must have been a bad flight. In any case, get well, Steve.
Never change, AL. 🙂
Evening all. Looks like I’ll be swinging in the rain tomorrow. Should get a proper soaking over 36 holes in deepest Zummerzet.
Too kind ‘H – i fink …
and re 29, soz, top line – too many E’s (disclaimer: any implied drug references in the previous prison sentence were entirely detrimental and ought to be sniffed at) butt f@kkit, it’s the school ‘olideeez, ent it??? Breaking up … over!
Cynic@17: Elneny cost £11 million. So that would be a profit of minus £1 million.

Hi Holic
Just back from Australia, wanted to say hi and bye as I will no longer be drinking in this bar. But its been great! I am indebted to you for offering us all an opportunity to express an opinion re all things Arsenal.
Sydney Reds appraisal was pretty much spot on. Sydney was awash with Arsenal fans. My wife and I were smiling from ear to ear as we watched a cruise ship circle Sydney Harbour absolutely laden with Gooners singing their hearts out – clearly heard on the steps of the Opera House and beyond. Even in the depths of midwinter the daytime temp was in the low 20’s C with lots of clear blue Aussie sky. I have been to Australia many times but this trip was hands down the best (although Melbourne is a culturally superior city for me). The game itself(versus Wanderers) had the feel of a pre season friendly, but enjoyable nonetheless, and you could sense that The Arsenal had a few more gears if required. My Kiwi mate was gobsmacked that a club side could sell out the Olympic stadium twice in a week – for friendly matches! He remarked that even the All Blacks would strulgge to sell it out – probably correct.
Anyway – please contact me on the email address you have for me if you ever want to come down to NZ – we will look after you and yours. My passions include Arsenal ,music and drinking – pretty sure we can find some common ground!
All the best, and thank you.
