The King Is Dead – Long Live The King

May 23rd, 2018 by 'holic

“Welcome everybody. Today, I am really delighted and excited to announce the new head coach of Arsenal Football Club as Unai Emery.”

With that simple introduction the catalyst for change reached it’s conclusion with Ivan Gazidis stamping his newly-acquired authority on footballing matters at the Arsenal. He explained to the assembled press that he headed the team of three that included our head of football relations, Raul Sanllehi, and head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, that delivered the recommendation to the board.

A detailed timescale followed which gave the lie to the stories last week that Mikel Arteta’s appointment was imminent. That tale presumably was encouraged as a smokescreen, or heaven forbid, to ‘stimulate’ the betting market. Not all of the press were duped, and well done to Neil Fissler at the Express who either got incredibly lucky or was briefed about Emery’s impending appointment for his piece on the Sunday following the interview.

What delayed the announcement was the fact that Paris St Germain didn’t complete their season until Sunday, and as soon as that was over Emery and Gazidis flew to the States to meet the Kroenkes’ returning overnight on the red-eye. Gazidis was quick to justify the decision this morning (Wednesday).

“Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.”

That is undeniably true. Emery spent four years in charge of Valencia where he finished third in La Liga three seasons in a row, despite losing David Villa and David Silva for the last of those three. A six month spell at Spartak Moscow ended in a sacking and he returned to Spain, taking over at Sevilla in 2013. His three full seasons at the club ended with Europa League Final victories, the last of which was against a strong Liverpool team.

After that match he announced he was leaving the club and shortly afterwards he took over as head coach at Paris St Germain. In his first season he won a domestic cup double but Monaco surprisingly took the title. This season just ended he did land the title and a second cup double. Sadly for him that is the bare minimum for the current owners and he paid the penalty for not delivering the Champions League.

He surprised, and dare I add delighted, many with his performance in his first Arsenal press conference. Speaking in English, a language unfamiliar to him we were informed beforehand, the new man made all the right noises.

“Success next season would be developing, but how? By battling for every title. That’s in Arsenal’s and my history. It’s very important for the club, after two years outside the Champions League, to work to be the best team in the Premier League and also in the world.

I want to say thank you Arsene Wenger for your legacy. For all the coaches in the world, he is a reference. We learned, I learned from him all the things in football. It’s a big challenge for me, but I have worked also in other projects, big projects. For me, I am proud to be here and to work after Arsene Wenger.”

So what next? Doubtless speculation will be rife. It is transfer season approaching and a busy World Cup summer. Already the rumours have started with Jean-Michael Seri, the Nice midfielder, said to be a target for Emery.

I hope he is given time by the supporters and the gang of three as he establishes his high energy possession and pressing game. If he can coax that out of this team, which has produced it on the odd occasion, on a regular basis we may well make some progress toward his lofty aims.

Good luck Unai.

A New Header

The climate for change has blown through this place too. The managers header graphic has been a trusted one since a friend on Arsenal-Land, Seasider, designed it twelve years ago. I am so grateful for his offer to rejig the design slightly to incorporate some of our great players. Thank you my friend, I owe you a pint.

First post of the new era, ‘Holic, and I sense from it that like a lot of us you are waiting to see what it will bring, but with a sense of hopeful anticipation that we haven’t really had for several seasons since.

…and yes, the new home shirt is horrendous

I don’t mind admitting I am excited Ned. He may just be what this squad needs. A hard task-master who will reward those who buy into his vision and chop those who won’t.

Cheers H! Love the new header.

  7. on 23 May 2018 at 9:17 pm7North Bank Ned

I wonder if Emery had any input into the four new shirt numbers the club has announced: Cech to No 1 (vacant since Woj left), Hector to No 2 (vacant since Debuchy’s departure), Elneny to No 4 (the BFG’s number), and Xhaka to 34 (Le Coq’s old shirt). Some pointers to transfer intentions there.

Shirts No 3 and No 5 still vacant among the low numbers.

I hope you are right, ‘Holic, and have a sneaking feeling you may well be. Here’s hoping.

    Thanks Esso. Me too.

Ned, I’m not sure he will be a fan of Cech.

I too was suitably impressed with him at the presser. Having been informed that his command of english was poor, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could understand every word, and doubtless he will learn the correct language to be used in the dressing room! The general message for the players is that the party is over.

  11. on 23 May 2018 at 9:33 pm11TTG

It wouldn’t be an official appointment without a welcome from you Holic!
Two things are irritating me since Emery was announced . Firstly I am thoroughly sick of the references to Dick Emery even though we kicked them off here.
Secondly I have been at the Oval with two Spurs supporters today. They were suggesting we will be in the wilderness for five years. I told them if Emery works we are highly likely to finish above them as they face losing their manager and players because they don’t pay enough and in his haste to open the ground Levy racks up the building costs. Having a bright, shiny stadium means feck all as we know.
I genuinely think a good coach can make a big difference and the club needs new energy . I suspect we will never know how frustrated some members of the board were in the latter days of Arsene. I’m seeing the head of Comms tomorrow but he is a very professional like so I will have to infer a lot I suspect . I feel very excited about the new season and that hasn’t happened for a long time

Does this mean you are …. Emery bored?

    I’m here all week.

  18. on 23 May 2018 at 10:24 pm18Lulu

Lovely blog Holic. I’m excited for next season and what Emery can get out of some our younger players. I have no hope that he can make a defender out of Mustafi.

I would love to know what Arteta thinks of the brohuahua and rumours. Maybe the club could have shut them down sooner if he was not in the frame.

  19. on 23 May 2018 at 10:26 pm19bt8

And welcome Unai Emery to Arsenal. Every success, please.

    Good one H
What a superbly presented press conference by our new Manager.
Another clearly well educated, well read, well groomed European import to grace the Arsenal Football Club.
Dare i say it,a younger version of the erudite urbane Mr Wenger.
The only slight worry i have is nowhere can i find any reference to the length of his contract.
TTG did say in previous drinks that it was a 2yr with an option for an extra year.
Which i personally would be very disappointed with if true.
If Emery was the outstanding candidate as espoused by Gazidis, how is a 2yr deal commensurate with that gushing endorsement.
I cannot believe the Board would be so churlish as to make such a poor statement of support to our new Man with such a paltry offer.

Rwanda’s president appears to be a Gooner, and tweets about the club, e.g.:

    https://twitter.com/PaulKagame/status/992151058892902403

The sporting apparel press suggests this Visit Rwanda deal is worth £10 million a year for three years and is a record sleeve sponsorship deal for the Premiership (that, of course, is a record for a sponsorship carried on a shirt sleeve, not a sponsorship of a record sleeve, for those old enough to remember such things).

Good stuff, Holic and a very nice new banner to boot. I share your enthusiasm for the prospect of the promised high energy pressing game. Hopefully the backward 45 degree pass that has become a special and a hallmark of the past couple of years will be condemned to days gone down.

A young, multi-lingual coach with a strong self-belief and a shedload of relevant experiences to learn from. He appears to have done his homework on the squad, is confident and raring to go. What’s not to like?

A very successful outcome from what appears to have been a well conceived and managed process.

  42. on 24 May 2018 at 9:40 am42Steve T

    Nice stuff H

So far, all looks good. I agree with many that this is a very positive appointment. He’s already saying very much the right thing. His English is already more eloquent and understandable than some of the Caledonian contingent that frequent these parts.

All I would say is that he will need time and support. The nature of today’s game is that tolerable seems to be in short supply. A couple of decent defenders, a quality holding player and who knows what is possible?

    Looking forward to it already.

  43. on 24 May 2018 at 10:56 am43TTG

    Clive
There appears to be doubt about the length but it is no longer than three years. They are obviously worrying about the compensation payment if it doesn’t work out. This is Huss Fahmy doing his stuff.
Will try to find out more from Gonnella tonight. Will take thumbscrews! Holic
I like the new livery. It’s much better than that awful shirt with pink sleeves. My dear old Dad has been turning in his grave for years and looking at that won’t make it much more restful!

  44. on 24 May 2018 at 11:22 am44Cynic

Keown – When I played under Wenger, his philosophy was you should never make a player watch footage of their errors as it damages their confidence.

And that’s why we see the same mistakes, over and over and over again. Shockingly poor management that the new guy will not be repeating. I hope.

  45. on 24 May 2018 at 12:08 pm45bt8

    turn and face the strain

  46. on 24 May 2018 at 1:18 pm46Steve T

    Re the new kit.

Possibly one of the worst I have ever set eyes on. I think it looks totally hideous. In my opinion, Puma are not even close to being in the same league as either Adidas or Nike when it comes to the quality of their products. When they then come up with a design like that then it really does just sink to new, uncharted levels.

When can we sack them? Can’t we get them to do a Wenger and leave a year early???

  47. on 24 May 2018 at 3:13 pm47bathgooner

Steve T, there was talk about changing to Adidas at the end of this season, a year before the end of the Puma deal, some months ago but it’s gone quiet since talk that Nike had matched the Adidas offer. It seems likely that this is the last year we have to put up with the Puma designers and their susceptibility to adding ‘frills’.

  48. on 24 May 2018 at 4:03 pm48DB10**

@44 did an about-turn myself reading keowns words.
But surely that was back then. I am assuming that players learn watching videos at a modern club like ours.

  49. on 24 May 2018 at 5:53 pm49bt8

    BBC’s Rwanda history timeline:

“2004 March – President Kagame rejects French report which says he ordered 1994 attack on president’s plane, which sparked genocide.”

    2 factors in Kagame’s favor:
1: The French report might indeed have been wrong (maybe not)
2: He is an Arsenal fan, or claims to be one according to Twitter

Personally, I am not sure about hopping to for a visit to Rwanda at this time.

  50. on 24 May 2018 at 8:55 pm50Goonerholic

I bring you bad news bath. Puma do have the right, I’m told, to match the highest bid for the next deal and have made noises about doing just that.

  51. on 24 May 2018 at 9:09 pm51North Bank Ned

That appalling pink band on the sleeve, it is now apparent, is there to provide a backdrop for sleeve sponsorship, so I reckon we are stuck with it for a while.

  52. on 24 May 2018 at 9:15 pm52North Bank Ned

Puma can do a half-way decent red and white kit.

I hope that we also have the right, should they match that high bid, to tell them to take up thy bed and walk..

Puma has always been a dreadful kit supplier, even going back to when we were kids. I always preferred Umbro and even Admiral to Puma, but nothing will ever beat Adidas.

Unainimously positive to watch this man manag… coach at the Emery’s Stadium. I will miss the weekly wengerisms though. I wonder if there is any way to get the man to start tweeting with Trump-like regularity. If anyone can fit wisdom into the fortune cookie format, it is him.

    But I digress.

Welcome Unai. We are one of five-sex teams of the sameish level and we won’t have an easier ride just because we changed management. It will be hard. But it will be new. Newhard. A few flowing moves, a shout at some silverware, a couple of nice goals, a red card against us at the worst of times, a red card going for usin the perfect moment, and preferably a Van Nistlerooy pen miss huddle and next season will be perfect. Just perfect. Fuck winning titles and winning every game. Some excitement, us competing, and a few good memories and I’m in. I think Unai might give us that.

Highly recommend a very insightful interview about our new coach by
Ivan [ i know how to play the long game ] Gazidis.
It’s on Arsenal Player on the Arse website under the heading
” Scratch the surface and he just goes deeper ”
Listening to him speak so eloquently about the new man and what he will bring to our table ,makes we wish the new season was starting next week. !!
I must say i am more and more impressed with Ivan the more i hear from him.
Because of Arsene’s complete control over football matters,he has had to bide his time and show the patience of Job,before he could implement the structures he wanted to put in place.
It is clear to me that he is very much an Arsenal man,and knows what sets us apart from other Clubs, and he really gets what it stands for.

  62. on 24 May 2018 at 11:21 pm62TTG

If we have the big sporting clothing manufacturers queueing up to give us money I could live with naff kit if the football is good. I still have nightmares about the green and blue kit in the early nineties and the tyre track yellow and blue kit just after. The club survived but those kits were proper shite.
I now believe Emery was the first choice story from something I heard tonight . It also means that the press and social media don’t know what is going on at Arsenal . That implies a lot of the transfer stuff is bollocks.
I would suspect our transfer activity might be
    Leno- goalkeeper
    Soyuncu – CB
    Evans- CB
    Seri – midfield
Not sure if we will see a proper defensive midfielder but Emery will get them to mark and press properly
That might mean out – Ospina, Chambers, Mustafi, Xhaka , Welbeck.
Perez will return and thrive under a Spanish manager

  63. on 25 May 2018 at 12:17 am63bt8

Lucas Perez return under Emery could be very intriguing, as could a bunch of players really turning it on as we haven’t seen recently. Come on the new season.

Not sure about Lucas Perez, seems like a busted flush to me. I doubt he can help us push on to the next level.
I guess we need somebody who can play in those League Cup matches though!

  66. on 25 May 2018 at 9:41 am66Cynic

I still have nightmares about the green and blue kit in the early nineties and the tyre track yellow and blue kit just after. The club survived but those kits were proper shite.

The green and blue mid 80s kit? I hated it at the time but have bought the replica “tribute” version that went on sale a few years ago.

As for the bruised banana shirt, I love that one and was wearing mine just yesterday. 🙂

The worst kits we’ve had, until Puma turned up to ruin us for all time (or at least as long as they are doing our kits) were Nike though. The Northampton Town away kit is the worst we had with them, but all of their blue ones were dreadful, with the exception of the dark blue Dreamcast third shirt. I always liked that.

  67. on 25 May 2018 at 9:46 am67TTG

Being an Arsenal fan makes you paranoid. Unai Emery has ‘only’ got £50 million to spend whilst Pochettino has £150 million! It the press ignore the sales that Emery might make- could be up to £120 million if he were to let Bellerin go whilst Poch’s pot included the sales of Alderweireld, Rose and Dembele which is about £90 million in my reckoning. So Poch has £60 million or Emery has £170 million if you want a proper point of comparison

  68. on 25 May 2018 at 11:00 am68Sancho P

Paranoid – moi? You bet. Look at all the players they are after according to the Daily Mirror! Still we’ll show ’em.

  69. on 25 May 2018 at 1:14 pm69goonersince54

I see Pochettino has signed an extension through to 2023.
He’s an optimist if ever there was one. ??
Pellegrini signed on for 3 yrs at the Hammers,so hopefully Eme gy got at least the same offer.

  70. on 25 May 2018 at 1:39 pm70Dorset Mick

Hope Pochettino has a get-out clause in case his team of diving cheats are relegated down to League Two to rub shoulders with the likes of Accrington Stanley. A man can dream, can’t he?

  71. on 25 May 2018 at 1:56 pm71bt8

The worst kit supplier is therefore whoever we are using at the time, not necessarily this time.

  72. on 25 May 2018 at 2:08 pm72Galteegunner

I am very excited for the season ahead and its been a long time since i felt that. I am looking forward to seeing us with a fast energetic pressing style. I am really looking forward to seeing what he can do with the players we already have. Of course we need a few additions but I’m so curious to see how much better the current squad can do with different coaching and tactics.
Most fans work hard for a living and got disconnected with players who looked unwilling to put in a shift. Emery talks so much about hard work that if the players can buy in to that strong ethic that the fans and players will regain the connection that suffered in recent times. I feel that the backroom team Gazidis has put together are ambitious and will fight hard for success. Bring it on lads

The worst kit supplier is therefore whoever we are using at the time

Unless it was Umbro or Adidas. 🙂

But definitely Puma is the worst, with their skinny fit shite and awful designs.

  74. on 25 May 2018 at 3:58 pm74Datsyuk with studs

It’s been a while since my last post 🙂
So first things first: Thank you Holic for all the top work you invest into this place. I really enjoy coming here for a drink in the quiet and listen to you and all the other guests.

Next: Welcome Mr. Emery! Excited about you signing for us.

About the sleeve deal: Swiss boulevard-press is on it today. Some swiss politicians are suggesting that we, the Swiss, should stop supporting Rwanda with development funds if Kagame has money enough he can spend on a football club in England.
I know there are more than two points of view one could have on this but the fact itself that the issue gets discussed makes this deal questionable. Just my two cents.

  75. on 25 May 2018 at 5:38 pm75North Bank Ned

Not sure Lucas Perez got a fair shake with us. He only started two league games and was subbed on in a further nine. He only played more than 20 mins in a league game four times.

  76. on 25 May 2018 at 5:43 pm76North Bank Ned

And I never cared for that blue and white striped away kit in 1892.

  77. on 25 May 2018 at 6:07 pm77bt8

As for me I would rather win 1-0 than 5-4, and a manager who intent upon winning the Premier League might be inclined to agree with me.

  78. on 25 May 2018 at 6:39 pm78Dr Feelgood

Get the band back together he said…..

    We ain’t ever been away.

Happy Train coming to a platform near you, (but bring your own medicine, times are hard).

This guy Emery’s not going to put up with you sick-notes – you know who you are.

  79. on 25 May 2018 at 8:00 pm79TTG

Silent Stan had apparently opened his wallet again and given Emery another £20 million. Meanwhile we had the Swiss captain Lichtsteiner at London Colney today looking at joining on a free. He might teach Hector how to defend which is badly needed.
As for Poch his big challenge will be keeping his best players on their wage structure. It’s high time they Spursed it up!

  80. on 25 May 2018 at 9:24 pm80little lamby gorham

(rummages around the medicine kit) Dr F @78 i have two cases of black draught and a packet of lemsip to contribute to the medical cabinet. and a curry comb i can’t get the bear grease off of.

glad to hear silent stan is opening his wallet, and not lars’s.

  81. on 25 May 2018 at 11:48 pm81OsakaMatt

Lichtsteiner is a no for me as his
name is too long as well as his tooth.
No more than 5 letters should be the
    key criteria.

  82. on 26 May 2018 at 12:41 am82TTG

    OM
    Mavropanos
    Aubameyang
    Mkhitaryan
    Lacazette

Do you detect a trend?…..more revenue when names are printed on shirts. It’s Ivan’s best idea so far

  83. on 26 May 2018 at 6:21 am83OsakaMatt

    I have noticed TTG.

    More outrageous exploitation of the
Gooner fanbase. If he agrees to Steph
on his shirt then it’s ok.

  84. on 26 May 2018 at 8:16 am84TTG

I think it’s why the deal for Demba Ba broke down at the last minute !

  85. on 26 May 2018 at 8:26 am85TTG

Was at Lords yesterday and who should be in our stand but Martin Keown! He still looks fit enough to play and you still wouldn’t argue with him. Everyone wanted to know if he would like to come back to coach the defence. He was very non- committal!

  86. on 26 May 2018 at 8:28 am86North Bank Ned

That would nix the Papastathopoulos speculation, OM

  87. on 26 May 2018 at 9:56 am87North Bank Ned

You could have decent team of five-letters-or-less players from recent years:

    Cech

    Dixon — Keown — Adams — Cole

    Ozil — Petit — Brady — Pires

    Henry — Kanu

Bench: Lukic, Sagna, Bould, Toure, Diaby, Eboue, Reyes

    Stuck on 91 no more

    Nor marooned on 92

  94. on 26 May 2018 at 5:04 pm94OsakaMatt

    And we flee 93

  95. on 26 May 2018 at 5:05 pm95OsakaMatt

    And past 94 we soar

  96. on 26 May 2018 at 5:07 pm96OsakaMatt

    Past 95 we dive,
    one for the spuds there

  97. on 26 May 2018 at 5:10 pm97OsakaMatt

As for 96, there was a fix
one for Real Madrid there too

  98. on 26 May 2018 at 5:13 pm98OsakaMatt

    We’ve seen off 97 on a
    rapid run to heaven

  99. on 26 May 2018 at 5:15 pm99OsakaMatt

    A breeze past 98
    at a very rapid rate

  100. on 26 May 2018 at 5:16 pm100bt8

Surely Edu deserves a mention at only three letters.

Cottagers one half away from the big time

  105. on 26 May 2018 at 6:11 pm105OsakaMatt

Great timing I must say bt8, Auba like
    in its way

  106. on 26 May 2018 at 7:33 pm106TTG

Lovely to see Fulham win and get back to the Premier League.
Personally I shall be supporting the Scousers tonight but I suspect not everyone will

  107. on 26 May 2018 at 8:17 pm107TTG

What an evil bastard Ramos is. That was a cynical and brutal foul on Salah but hard for the refereee to pick up. He knew exactly what he was doing

  108. on 26 May 2018 at 8:40 pm108Cynic

He is, but how I wish we’d signed him all those years ago.

    We signed Senderos.

  109. on 26 May 2018 at 9:00 pm109TTG

We nearly signed him a few years ago as I believe Trev can confirm. This is a bizarre game but nice to see Liverpool making a game of it after that ridiculous goal

  110. on 26 May 2018 at 9:12 pm110Cynic

That Bale goal was sheer porno, to quote Terry-Thomas.

Another player we decided was “too expensive”…

  111. on 26 May 2018 at 9:14 pm111Cynic

Anyone else having to fill in name and email every time they want to post by the way?

  112. on 26 May 2018 at 9:42 pm112Cynic

The best team by a mile won that.

  113. on 26 May 2018 at 10:13 pm113North Bank Ned

bt8b@100: He does. And congrats on the ton to see off OM’s doggerel.

    Cynic@111: Me, too.

    Cynic@112: Agreed.

  114. on 26 May 2018 at 10:26 pm114TTG

There was a massive change in the game when Salah left. I was surprised when Mane scored but they finished well beaten. Bale’s goal was incredible but that goalie…..and everyone knows he has that sort of mistake in him …sorry those sort of mistakes
Ramos is an animal. I was sorry to see him lift the trophy . He is a master of the dark arts

  115. on 26 May 2018 at 11:41 pm115OsakaMatt

    @113

doggerel was giving it the benefit of an
ill-deserved doubt. Classic bit of poaching.

But only the bench for Edu in the short and
sweet team tho for me Ned. His fate alas 🙂

  116. on 26 May 2018 at 11:46 pm116OsakaMatt

    @111 me too

  117. on 27 May 2018 at 7:30 am117North Bank Ned

Edu can sit next to Rix and Ure, OM

  118. on 27 May 2018 at 10:05 am118iBtM

@61, Clive, all of the business vectors are very positive since his arrival. The organisation structure is now professional.

Still more work required to bridge the £100M gap between The Arsenal and Man U on ‘commercial dealings’. £100M buys two good players a season before we’re even in the market. Fortunately, Manure has done a nice job of pouring about £600M down the gurgler over recent years.

  119. on 27 May 2018 at 10:55 am119bathgooner

What Ned said @113 and BtM said @118.

  120. on 27 May 2018 at 11:49 am120Cynic

This typing your name thing is going to kill the drinks, especially when cba’s stream of consciousness stuff.

Probably a cookie issue because of GDPR?

  121. on 27 May 2018 at 1:19 pm121bt8

If anybody points out that Rix and Ure actually have shorter names than Edu (due to their having one syllable rather than two) I will throw the bloodt book at them.

    Oh.

  122. on 27 May 2018 at 1:23 pm122bt8

    bloodt = bloody

    Where is my spillchucker?

Come to think of it, I share Cynic’s malady at 111. Pen and paper, anyone?

  123. on 27 May 2018 at 1:49 pm123Cynic

Not only the malady @ 111 but also the posts disappearing woe.

Poor old cba will be respondus interruptus.

At least I can post now, so might as well make it worthwhile…

Not impressed with the two defensive targets we’re supposedly signing.

Not because they are rubbish but because of their names. I hope the Greek at least has a nickname, should we sign him. Might one suggest Phil (as in Phil the Greek)?

Buggered if I’m typing their full names.

  135. on 28 May 2018 at 3:29 pm135bathgooner
