Fatherland Good – Motherland Not So

Mar 22nd, 2019 by 'holic

In an international break I suppose it is only right to talk about the internationals themselves. Unfortunately the first of the home nations to play was the motherland, and with apologies to the many fine Caledonian visitors to this site I will completely wash over their defeat by the land of Borat. Luckily I didn’t realise it was an early kick-off and avoided it.

I watched all of Northern Ireland’s match against Estonia which had a surprising Arsenal link. Nineteen year old centre-back, Daniel Ballard, who is yet to play a first team match for The Arsenal was on the bench for the hosts. Unfortunately he didn’t get an appearance but saw his colleagues ease to a 2-0 triumph with second-half strikes from McGinn and Davis. The match included a spectacular missed opportunity when McNair headed the ball into the ground and over the bar from four yards out.

Arthur will be pleased to see I also watched the second-half of Poland’s win over a strong Austrian side. The visitors were said to have had the better of the first-half but Poland stuck in there and secured the points with a Piatek header midway through the second-half. Of the matches I missed Belgium’s 3-1 defeat of Russia, despite a Courtois howler, looked the pick of the performances.

So to today (Friday), and Alex Iwobi featured in one of the early kick-offs as Nigeria defeated Seychelles 3-1. I have read mixed reports of Iwobi’s performance. Apparently the talking point of the match involved a howler by Uzoho, the Super Eagles goalkeeper, to gift Seychelles their consolation strike. One to Google later maybe.

As I type England have just taken the lead against the Czech Republic with the players of the moment involved. Sancho crossed for Sterling to slide home at the far post. The match needed it. I did enjoy England’s World Cup run but the enthusiasm hasn’t carried forward to pre-match tonight. In time added on at the end of the half Sterling was sandwiched in the box and Kane made it 2-0. (How I would love to say it dribbled in!)

Sterling’s wonderful second strike just past the hour mark removed any doubt about the outcome and triggered a debut appearance as substitute for Republic of Ireland international, Rice. There were still over twenty minutes left when Sterling’s deflected effort clinched a very good hat-trick and earned him a standing ovation as he made way for Hudson-Odoi. He was involved in the own goal by Klaunchuz with six minutes left. 5-0.

More Gooner’s involved at the weekend so hopefully another review to follow on Sunday night. Have a great one, ‘holics..

The Scottish result was a disaster for them. I’m currently in Cyprus who are in their group and they beat San Marino 5-0 yesterday. They fancy they can beat the Scots too.
England are getting the benefit of the academy system in a rich league. Their age group results are excellent and they have top quality working its way into the team now. We just need more creativity in midfield. Starting with Donkey Dier? Really? I suspect Foden will come through soon and maybe ESR? Pep has worked miracles with Sterling .

I was 14 in 1978, you must have been some kind of jessie if you got arrested by a paper boy.

Not seen OUT either. I’ve been watching Robert Powell in Hannay recently. Bit odd seeing Jesus in tweeds, smoking a pipe, but that’s the C of E for you I suppose.

And for the record I don’t NOT LIKE YOU and the only soldier I ever was, was pretending to be Rick Jason in Combat when I was about seven.

I’m just bored with Brexit and the kind of lazy bullshit that gets blarted all over the place (away from here) by people who should know better. On both sides.

So if we can stick to music (if The Ramones can be called music*) and football and drunken antics that go nowhere near politics, it’s all good. I’d even accept chat about the weather, if you’re hard up for a topic. (that fucking hail last week, eh?)

Get Brexit everywhere else, just nice to be able to come somewhere and get away from it all.

    *Just twisting your bits there.

  19. on 23 Mar 2019 at 1:07 pm19Cynic

And on that note, I’m off to dig fungus out of my toenail.

Maybe Brexit is not such a bad topic after all. :-/

A bracket is a tall punctuation mark commonly used in matched pairs within text, to set apart or interject other text. The matched pair is best described as opening and closing.

    Balls like globe artichokes.

Coincidentally, later that evening on That’s Life, Esther had some globe artichokes that looked like a pair of bollocks.

    They were Cyril Smith’s.

Joke falls flat as I confuse evil politician Smith for boss-eyed fruity voiced Fletcher. 🙁

Off to dig fungus out of my brains.

Inept rioters. Were they Ramones quality?

  31. on 23 Mar 2019 at 5:42 pm31ATG

Tough game for Poland but we held in there and Piatek is a bit of a revelation in Serie A the ball just keeps finding him in the box.

On the other hand my Czech friends weren’t very happy last night.

  32. on 23 Mar 2019 at 6:23 pm32TTG

So Granit Xhaka is ready to take the next step up in his career ..away from Arsenal. Please be our guest Granit. If we could get what we paid for him I’d be willing to provide transport to the airport and carry his luggage to the gate.

If anyone is mulling renewing, or taking out, a Gooner subscription I think the deadline is midnight tonight.

  34. on 24 Mar 2019 at 3:46 am34bt8

@32. Xhaka, not being as dumb as he looks, probably senses that Torreira and Guendouzi are better players than he is so it could be a good career move to get out sooner rather than later.

  35. on 24 Mar 2019 at 6:33 am35OsakaMatt

I think AW saw Ramsey and Xhaka
    as our future CM partnership.
A bit optimistic as it turned out,
    they certainly aren’t bad but I won’t
    miss either of them.

    The Arsenal Women cleared some
tumbleweed with a 5-1 win away at
Liverpool. Win the next 3 and they
will be champions before the last
    game with Man (?) City.

SG – the one that got away

  41. on 24 Mar 2019 at 8:25 pm41bt8

@37. Well. The main possible alternatives I can think of are Gender Neutral City and Woman City. Maybe Man City Women is really the best but it still conjures up odd images.

  42. on 24 Mar 2019 at 8:27 pm42bt8

Apologies if 41 offended anyone. Completely unintended, I am sure.

  43. on 24 Mar 2019 at 8:49 pm43bt8

And congratulations to the Arsenal Women, who are the fairest of all.

  44. on 24 Mar 2019 at 9:29 pm44bt8

Excellent goal by Gnabry but the marking wasn’t the tightest. KS, I don’t think Van Dijk was the closest defender but in any case if it had been in the Premier League I don’t think he would have been allowed to get so central and so close in with nobody contesting. But maybe I’m just rationalizing because the alternative is imagining Gnabry doing the same thing for Arsenal.

    Sob, sob.
