Still Smiling

Mar 18th, 2019 by 'holic

Despite our absence the weekend action gave us encouragement and much to enjoy. It could have been us of course, and not Manchester United, suffering defeat at Molineux had Wolves not reached the FA Cup quarter-final. The much improved Midland outfit reprised our 2-0 defeat of chauffeur Ole’s misfiring vehicle.

There was some Premier League action and we received another boost in the form of Chelsea’s reverse at Everton. That prevented the bus stop from joining us on points from an equal number of fixtures. We have a three points advantage still and their game in hand is gone. If you had said to me at Christmas that we would have been one point behind the Middlesex Nomads, two and three points clear of United and Chelsea respectively, with eight matches to play I would have snatched your hand off.

It seems like longer ago than 2015/16 when we overtook the Nomads to claim second place that we have taken our challenge into the pointed end of the League season.  Last season we trailed fourth placed Liverpool by twelve points and Chelsea by eight at this stage. What a difference a year appears to have made.

If the smile was wiped off your face by the news of Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo, or Monchi to you and me, opting for Sevilla rather than coming to us as Technical Director then perhaps you want to consider why you support The Arsenal. I confess that the internal politics behind the departure of Sven Mislintat, and the ensuing search for a replacement, is fascinating. I get that and try to hoover up every snippet of rumour out there myself, but ultimately only to fill in the gaps between watching my team play football.

Come to think of it if you were upset at Monchi’s decision you must have been distraught today when the other rumoured candidate, one of our own, Marc Overmars opted to sign a new deal with Ajax. For whom he is also ‘one of our own’ and rather more a part of his heart in all likelihood.

AST Gives Back To Islington schools

Less glamorous perhaps, but more admirable are the efforts the Gunners and affiliated organisations use to give something back to the young and less advantaged. I have carried before comment on the Arsenal Foundation and a fraction of the great work they are doing both locally and worldwide.

Word reaches me that AST have partnered with Kickaround to donate a six-issue subscription of the magazine to all 47 primary schools in the Borough of Islington. Kickaround, which launched in 2018, is the children’s football magazine from the team behind cult publication When Saturday Comes, and puts literacy and learning through football at its heart.

The donation was made from the AST with the aim to support the school children local community to Arsenal Football Club in north London, giving every primary school and its pupils access to the magazine which has been prized for its quality writing and diverse content. It is hoped the donation will assist schools who are constantly experiencing tighter budgets, whilst encouraging reading for pleasure and a continued love of the beautiful game.

The first issue of that the children will receive, which features an article on Arsenal Women’s Super League title race and a pull-out poster of Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, will arrive at the chosen schools this week along with an illustrated Giant World Football Map to display in classrooms or libraries.

A well done to AST from me, and I suspect most of you too. On to the thrills of another international break.

    Evening H
During this final Arse free interlull i have lined up some re showings of 3 of my fav games at home this season.
Yesterday i watched the Liverpool game, still thoroughly enjoyable 2nd time around.
Next w/end i will watch the Chelsea game, and the following w/end when the EPL resumes, given we don’t play till Monday night,i have saved the best till last, yes you guessed it, the neighbors down the road.
I will have everything crossed that any of our boys on Intl duty, return home safe and well and free of injury.
April promises to be either a massive boost to the managerial stocks of our delightfully eccentric new Coach,or a monumental let down, given that we have come so far this season, to falter now would be so cruel on the Club.
    Onward and upward.

  4. on 18 Mar 2019 at 9:25 pm4Goonersince54

I see some season ticket holders at our neighbors, are showing their class by offering their tickets for the opening game at the new stadium for 1200 a pair online.

  5. on 18 Mar 2019 at 9:57 pm5North Bank Ned

Clive, is that what they want for them or will pay for not having to go there?

    Thanks for the post Guvnor.

Not too bothered about Monchi or
Overmars as long as we already know
our summer targets and it won’t be
used as an excuse for not getting
    players in this summer.

Perhaps Raul doesn’t like rule by
committee after his time at Barca.

Interesting stuff Guvna. Strikes me there’s one obvious candidate for the senior vacancy, whatever title you want to give it. A certain A. Wenger. One of our own.

Greetings from the TTGs in Cyprus!
I had a chance to read the Times properly today !
Ironic that while Sir Jim Ratcliff is touted as a buyer for the Bus Stop boys replacing Abramovich because of his ability and willingness to enable them to finance appropriate teambuilding we are owned by a man whose only objective is to line his pockets! No investment in the future from Stan.

    Wolves confirmed as being played
after Palace at home. 8 games in
    April after another irritating interlull
in March. Same for everyone so no
excuses, just have to hope we get
    lucky with hammys, ankles, knees
    and groins.

Auba, Mus and Xhaka have clocked
up most minutes this season but some
good news is Leno, Nacho, Kos, AMN,
Ozil, Laca and Mus will get a break.
Not sure how that compares with our
rivals but at least it gives a rest to a
    reasonable nucleus. Perhaps, we’ll
finally see the lesser spotted Suarez
    start a game in April.

  24. on 20 Mar 2019 at 2:08 am24bt8

Player of the season candidates currently including Leno, Laca, Auba Guendouzi and Kolasinac. Ask me tomorrow and I will probably tell you a different five but if not for Holding’s injury I have a feeling he could have been a top candidate. Our late season pairing of Koscielny and Sokratis has pulled us through just when it looked like we were about to go under. Honorable mentions to Nacho and Iwobi, whose first name escapes me at the moment.

  25. on 20 Mar 2019 at 2:25 am25bt8

Okay, it is Alex, who has had a good season.

  27. on 20 Mar 2019 at 7:09 am27North Bank Ned

Says something about what Emery has done with the first team that there are so many candidates for player of the season without one being a standout.

  28. on 20 Mar 2019 at 12:25 pm28bt8

OM, Torreira probably would have gone into my honorable mentions if I had thought about him but it says something about his recent drop in performances that I forgot him. Agreed that his first half of the season was spectacularly good.

  29. on 20 Mar 2019 at 12:56 pm29bt8

Ned, You are correct once again. We do not necessarily possess the most balanced squad in the Premier League, and yet our performances overall give the impression of being balanced enough to be quite effective against almost any Premier League opponent, and I have a feeling that this impression is down in some important ways to Emery’s astute use of the personnel he has available to him.

running around like crazy after scoring his first ton in a while…

  101. on 21 Mar 2019 at 6:07 pm101bathgooner

Walks over to scruzgooner and shakes hand robustly in a traditional manner of which even TTG would improve. “Well done, scruz.”

  102. on 21 Mar 2019 at 6:15 pm102scruzgooner

shakes bath’s hand, and bows over it, not an original celebration for sure. double-high-five’s matt, hi-low five’s ned, and chucks a salute at bt8 for the excruciatingly wonderful 29-move buildup play.
