Venkatesham and Sanllehi Speak Up

May 20th, 2019 by 'holic

Managing director Vinai Venkatesham and head of football Raul Sanllehi have given an interview being posted in instalments on the official club website, and if you are naturally suspicious then you will dismiss it as pure PR, and of course there is an element of that involved. They have not been verbose with the supporters in their first season, an issue shared by the club’s owner and son.

Part one of the interview concentrates on the season yet incomplete, but one game from successful or not, and the involvement and vision of the owner, absent or otherwise?

Venkatesham is the man who takes the lead in the interview but at one point Sanllehi cuts in with the observation that the pair share a vision for the future of the club. It shouldn’t need to be said, but it is something of a reassurance that he makes that positive intervention. I have seen them at close quarters once and it is clear they are definitely comfortable in their relationship. Given the occasionally fractious dealings between Wenger and Gazidis that is a comfort.

The managing director was clear in the club’s vision for the future. Talk of transition from what went before to making “the club’s fans proud” and seeking success in the Premier League and Champions League. The cynics would argue Wolves owners would be sending the same message (are they?) and I get that. Whilst it was disappointing we didn’t quite make that once controversial fourth place the objective of continuous improvement sets a clear ambition for next season. You will be measured by results, gentlemen.

The subjects of the owner and financial situation are inevitably intertwined, and anybody who expected these guys to use a public forum to call for more input from Stan were always going to be disappointed. They put a really positive spin on the fact that he has has told them that every penny the club generates in revenue is available to deliver the objectives that all are agreed on. As a generalisation that is actually ok.

Oh, but if only Laura Woods had been able to delve deeper as the interviewer. Is the revenue being reduced by ‘deductions’ to fund Stan’s buying out of Alisher Usmanov? Whilst the insistence that we can only spend what we earn is roughly in line with the objectives of FFP have we considered that we are not dining at the same table as Manchester City and PSG (for now?).

Allow me to play the devil’s advocate. Manchester City and PSG will ride roughshod over FFP and accept financial penalties because they are financed by countries. We should perhaps forgive Stan for not throwing cash at The Arsenal (bear with me) because they will frankly throw the full weight of the legal profession at any attempts to preventing them from playing in and winning the big one. Stan is worth a few bob (understatement is my middle name) but the last thing he needs is for one of his sporting clubs to be denied entry into the most profitable of tournaments. He will piggy back on any success by others, maybe?

I’m looking forward to part two, because we already know that individual contracts are likely to be addressed, however fleetingly. There was a discussion developing about getting value for money from a large wage bill (a good thing Vinai said), and making important and ‘brave’ decisions about players with two years left on their contracts. This is the itch that we need to scratch badly. I’ll give these guys the benefit of any doubt because they frankly inherited a mess from the last year of Gazidis et al.

The summer will be a supreme test. We are able to spend money that we couldn’t in January due not to FFP, but Premier League financial restrictions. We do realise the benefits of the Adidas and new Emirates deals. Hopefully we have Europa League winners income and Champions League future to make us a more attractive proposition.

Have a good one, ‘holics, but moreso The Arsenal.

Oh no! A new post with a sinister sounding title. I will read but first these responses to previous drink:

Ned I don’t know about the double foamy lines but it could fall into the category of public art. 🙂

I know how I feel about this, heard all this from Ivan 100’s of times. I don’t think I want millions upon millions put in to be mcfc pt2 but some investment to improve and help the manager would be great.
We are The Arsenal, let’s prove this petro dollar industry wrong, come on Stan!

    Evening H
Having read the gist of the interview on the website, one telling point stood out.
” we are going to have to outsmart the market on transfers ”
which reinforces the notion that funds for buying players are not going to be available in any great amount.
One would hope that targets have already been identified and talked to,but my impression is,that like Leno/Torreira and Sokratis, most of us will be looking up the profiles of any new additions,as we have to accept they are going to be from the 2nd and third tier levels of those available in the marketplace.
Whether any of our targets are waiting for the result of the EL final before signing i don’t know, but given we are shopping below the top level, where CL football is a given,i wouldn’t assume that is the case.
Given the new season kicks off on Aug 10th,and pre season will start at the beginning of July,we have a window of approx 4 wks in June, to get new players in so we can integrate them into the club setup soonest.
    No rest for the wicked.
    9 days to go.

Thanks for this thoughtful post .
One thing that I don’t understand is why if FFP only allows you to spend what you earn is that we can be outspent by clubs with smaller grounds and hence attendances .Do they earn so much more revenue than us in off-field activities? Liverpool earn much less than us per game but have traded extremely cleverly in the buying and selling of their players. That is likely to be a way forward for us but should it be?

I’m reconciled to being Borussia Dortmund or Monaco competing against Bayern or PSG but it rings a bit hollow when we have sky high ticket prices, a top class stadium and we play in the most lucrative league in the world. One problem we have is a ridiculously high wage bill the product of years of jumbled thinking about socialist wage policies mixed in with desperate PR initiatives and poor selection of players. The Totts have a wage bill that is about 60% of ours and up until now have not had to sell their best players . We sold our best players systematically and built up financial reserves we have frittered away on paying too dollar to the likes of Mustafi , Mkhitaryan and you know who .

Something in the comparison of us with our closest rivals does not add up and that is why I find it difficult to trust the club’s spin merchants . Like Mark I’ve heard too much from Ivan Gazidis in the past

“we have to start making the difficult decisions when they have two years left on the contracts. We’re either going to renew those contracts or we’re going to be selling them”.

Cheerio Mesut. I cannot see us extending the worst contract we’ve ever given a player, so I think you can take it as read that we’ll be trying to sell him.

New boy drinks the kool aid and compliments his new boss, tries to convince others there is ambition there despite everyone seeing nothing close to ambition in 11 years.

We believe you new boy. We look forward to hearing more of this nonsense for another year or 2 before you are sacked and replaced with another new boy that believes the same bullshit and tries to outreach it on us. Stan is a parasite, a vacuum on the club that gives us nothing. Riddance to the lot of you.

I am convinced that there is some serious dodgy accounting going on with regard to the Totts alleged wage bill. They must pay their players in Arry Redknapp style brown envelopes! No way the players accept the wages they purport to pay them.

Hopefully our club will be brave enough to get rid of the over paid under performers and blood a few more kids. AMN and Chambers given a go in midfield as well.

Dexter, Not to defend Mkhi in any particular way but just wondering, did you take your poll in Azerbaijan?

  17. on 21 May 2019 at 4:52 pm17bt8

To explain myself, if that is possible, I am far from overwhelmed by Mkhi’s season but I have a feeling that he might have been very useful to have had in the squad for the final. There are certain dynamics in a big occasion such as this where it is difficult to explain the reason. In any case, it is time to put the Mkhi issue behind us as far as game preparation if nothing else.

  18. on 21 May 2019 at 4:59 pm18bt8

Some might say we could use it in our favor, and maybe we should. I see Chelsea have extended Giroud’s contract today, the timing of which is intended for Arsenal’s consumption I imagine.

  19. on 21 May 2019 at 8:55 pm19North Bank Ned

TTG@5: The FFP rules consider total revenue (match day income, commercial revenue and broadcasting income) with some permissible ‘adjustments’ such as ignoring development spending (stadiums, women’s teams, youth/community outreach &c), an allowance for owners to chip in 30 million euros a year in equity and some ambiguity over sponsorship deals with related parties (eg, a sheikh’s airline buying the naming right’s to the sheikh’s football club’s stadium). Net transfer earnings can be oblique because of the way transfer fees are amortized over the duration of the contract. Thus if I buy a 100 million euro player and give him a five-year contract, I need revenues of only 20 million euros to cover that in year one as far as FFP is concerned, not 100 million.

Interesting couple of snippets from Arseblog today.
Apparently we played a behind closed doors game last week, and Danny Welbeck featured and scored a hat trick.
We have another closed session game on Thursday against an Austrian side who play a high press, and will be interesting to see if Danny plays in that as well.
Indications are he could well be on the bench in Baku.

  21. on 21 May 2019 at 11:04 pm21Cynic

So Cech is going to work for Chelsea next season… Leno must play the final.

    Just to clarify transfer windows,
The one that opened 16th May,was for Domestic transfers only.
International signings cannot be ratified before June 11th.
Window closes on Aug 8th,2 days before the season kicks off.

    Ned thanks for that .
Interesting that Citeh have sold the naming rights to a stadium they rent from the City of Manchester!

  24. on 21 May 2019 at 11:44 pm24North Bank Ned

To my ear, the key quote in the Venkatesham/Sanllehi interview is “…every single penny that we generate as a football club is available for us to invest against achieving that ambition and that is the maximum we can ask from our owners as that is the maximum that is allowed through the Financial Fair Play rules…”

But what did Venkatesham mean by ‘the football club’? A broad definition, as a fan would think of the club? Or a narrow definition predicated on the corporate structure?

Arsenal Football Club plc is one of at least a dozen wholly owned subsidiaries of the parent company, Arsenal Holdings plc, itself a subsidiary of Delaware-based KSE UK Inc, which is wholly owned by Stan and close relatives. Other Arsenal Holdings’ subsidiaries include a company that owns the stadium, a company that manages the stadium, a company that manages retail operations, a company handling data management and a company that manages non-stadium property interests. It also owns the 50% of the Arsenal Broadband internet portal that KSE does not.

There is nothing particularly untoward in this corporate structure. It is common in US professional sports for a team and its stadium to be run as separate businesses. And, of course, the corporate structure may have changed since Stan took the company private last year. Even when there were still published accounts to look at, they were consolidated at the Arsenal Holdings level so impossible to tell where revenue and profits were allocated across the subsidiaries. In fact, there was a holding company for the football businesses between Arsenal Football Club plc and Arsenal Holdings plc.

So two conclusions. First, there is plenty of wiggle room in the definition of how much that ‘every single penny’ really is that is available to be ploughed back into the club. Second, there are other avenues beyond ‘the football club’ for the Kroenkes to extract earnings from the Arsenal revenue ecosystem should they choose to use them, over and above the 25,000 pounds Stan and Josh are paid each year to be non-executive directors of Arsenal Holdings. However, I don’t think their primary financial motive with the club is to generate revenue. Instead, it is to make their asset hugely more valuable, perhaps as rainy day insurance in the event one of their other assets goes belly up.

On your specific point, ‘Holic, about whether Arsenal’s revenue is being reduced by ‘deductions’ to fund Stan’s buying out of Usmanov, I suspect the answer is no. According to the offer document to take Arsenal Holdings private last year, buying Usmanov’s Red and White stake was paid for primarily by cash plus a relatively small bridging loan from Deutsche Bank which it specifically said was not collateralised on any Arsenal revenue streams (as the Glazers had done with the Mancs).

  25. on 22 May 2019 at 12:08 am25North Bank Ned

TTG@23, Man City bought the rights to the naming rights for the former Eastland stadium from Manchester city council in 2010. The club pays 2 million pounds a year for them. Without them, it wouldn’t have been able to seal the 35 million pounds a year stadium/shirts/training ground deal with Etihad.

I wonder if there is some hapless council official who is given a paddlin’ every year for signing off on such a giveaway.

You might also have seen the BBC report yesterday on the Duff & Phelps report on stadium naming rights https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48336453?SThisFB. Duff & Phelps, as valuers, have skin in this particular game, but it is notable that only 30% of Premiership clubs have sold sponsorship of their stadiums.

  26. on 22 May 2019 at 12:58 am26OsakaMatt

I’d play Leno too. Not because
    Cech is joining Chavski, he’s
    been quite open about that,
but because Leno is the better
    keeper now.
Do we stick with the cup keeper
is an old argument though and
I’m 99% sure Cech will play.

  27. on 22 May 2019 at 1:57 am27ecg

Interesting discussion on cup keeper. For me it really depends on who Chelsea will be playing up front. If they decide to play Giroud, I would rather have Cech as he is better with crosses in the air coming into the box. If it isn’t Giroud, I think Leno is a bit better shot blocker and a far better distributor of the ball.

It is the Gooner end of season drink up tonight but having arrived in London a very painful horse fly bite appears to have become infected so discretion became the better part of valour and I went to hospital to get some treatment. It’s a pity to miss it, some of the lads are very connected and interesting to chat to but Kevin and I are going to meet up before an early season game. Maybe a Champions League match?
Kevin isn’t going to Baku as it’s half-term and most of the usual suspects have just found it too much hassle to pick up flights especially as you can’t fly in and fly out again and accommodation is limited . It’s a UEFA shitfest and spoils a showpiece game that is a big opportunity for us. My sense is that the Chavs are not confident and at this stage I think we have a very decent chance . Much will depend on if Rudiger and Kante are fit( properly fit) but we can travel hopefully …..if we can get there!

The many times predicted Arsenal signing of Salomon Kalou never came in as we all know, but by chance I was scanning the roster of Hertha Berlin who are playing a friendly here this evening against the vaunted Minnesota United, and guess who appears on the Hertha roster. Correct, if you guessed Mr. Kalou, the only name I recognized.

    Re Chelsea injuries,
Rudiger is gone for the season after knee operation.
Kante has a thigh injury, line ball for Baku, with no playing time for a month,so unless they gamble,he will be on the bench at best.
Hudson Odoi and Loftus Cheek both out long term.
So 4 key players missing, which is worse than us.
Question is,do they have better more experienced replacements to cover, than we have had to cover for our injured parties.

Oh joy! The useless Ospina is returning to Arsenal because Napoli won5 pay £2 million. I don’t blame them but he is becoming unsellable. I certainly don’t want him in preference to Martinez as no. 2 keeper.

    as i mentioned before
    i watch university challenge
    only connect
    and mastermind
and ordinarily i feel like a dope
cos my knowledge is pop culture nonsense
so when someone did the simpsons
or punk music or post punk music
    as they did
I was for a short while in that world
    and discovered that the questions
    were ball achingly simple
    simplistic and corny
    so
as regards what yer man says about here cynic
    see above
    it’s peace in name only

the many metre high ‘peace walls’ still exist in Belfast
some are opened during the day to let people through
they’re locked at night for obvious reasons
    the hatred is still there
a fart in the wrong direction
    could bring it all down

    so
    when i hear yer man
talking with such clarity and confidence
about something of which he is monumentally naive
    it makes me think
how average were all the contestants
    on mastermind
    answering questions
    on stuff which sounded impressive
but of which i hadn’t a fuckin notion

Cynic @46 – yes let’s hope those are ones, and not these ones which have also been “leaked” https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/news/arsenal-away-kit-201920-16207333

CBA – Ian Dury was one of the greatest. But Irish? There was not an Irish bone in his body.

  88. on 23 May 2019 at 2:06 pm88Cynic

    the hatred is still there
a fart in the wrong direction
    could bring it all down

It’s the story of humanity, we’re all one excuse and hundreds of years of holding it all in check away from tearing each other’s throats out, as a species.

Mankind is a cancer on the Earth, I’d happily see it wiped away in an eye blink.

After I’m dead of course 😀

  89. on 23 May 2019 at 2:10 pm89Cynic

Those kits look very fake to me. The badge on the red one is skinny and with the blue kit it has been photoshopped on. It’s at the same angle on the dummy and on the model.

Who may or may not also be a dummy.

so him visiting family and roots
is made up then is it barman?

    i think not

i’ve planted a tricolour in his head

i’ve no doubt he woulda worn with pride

  91. on 23 May 2019 at 2:35 pm91can't be arsed

his family were well to do cunts
with a big farm o land here in Donegal

    but i’m guessing i’m wrong
    though i’m not

    .
that’s why playing in Derry in 79
    held no fear for him

a time when precisely nobody played there

  92. on 23 May 2019 at 2:37 pm92Cynic

Dury had an Irish great grandfather, I think (or great great) which makes him a generation more Irish than Barak Obama.

    truth be told

    bluster over substance
bollocks is an over produced sludge
