Buy All The Left Wingers!

Jun 12th, 2019 by 'holic

Wouldn’t you know it? Last night I settled down, this page open, and ready to chart the performances of Yannick Carrasco and Ryan Fraser in the Belgium versus Scotland Euro 20 qualifier in Brussels. The team sheets went up, and both were on their respective benches. Just my luck!

Fraser did get on for the last hour and actually looked the pick of a Scotland side that not surprisingly were second best on the night to a team that finished in third place in last summer’s World Cup.

Until recently these were being touted as the most likely attacking additions to the squad, and I seriously doubt with limited funds that we would buy both. Reports, largely originating in European press sources, have suggested that we are close to pipping Bayern Munich to Carrasco’s signing and that the haggling over his price from his Chinese club, Dalian Yifang, is now the final brick in the wall. I’m dubious about us not agreeing a fee of £25m for a young Belgian international.

I’ve been further persuaded to the benefits attached to signing Fraser from Bournemouth. First and foremost he is a ‘homegrown’ player, and remember we had to play the latter stages of the Europa League with a reduced squad because we didn’t have sufficient numbers of those, and we have already lost Rambo and Danny Welbeck this summer.

John Welsh, with whom I often enjoy a shared platform on A Bergkamp Wonderland, made the point that he would lean towards Fraser simply because Carrasco’s decision to go to China suggests that his main motivation is money, and not the club. That is a valid point, and he does not have the Premier League knowledge and experience that Fraser would bring. Fraser shouldn’t need a year to settle in, and the language barrier would be slightly less of an issue with the Scot!

My mind made up, I ventured into Twitter again today, only to read of our apparent interest in Ismaila Sarr. Where does he principally play, I hear those of you who have forgotten his performances for Rennes against us in the Europa League ask? He actually caused us real issues all across the front line, but is more often than not found on the left wing even though he is right footed. He has pace to burn, and looks decent value at a rumoured £30m.

But wait, what more is being written about him? The excellent Layth Yousif, writing for Football.London, wrote of “Rennes hoping for a bidding war for Sarr, with Monaco and Premier League pair Leicester City and Watford interested, along with Serie A giants Inter Milan and Roma”.

There is a powerful whiff of an agent and a club looking to maximise the fee, and then wages, for their ‘asset’. I’m not sure we will be playing those games with our rumoured budget. Again he may take time to settle in the Premier League.

I can’t wait to open up Twitter tomorrow and read the latest rumours. Especially if we are linked with…. who plays left wing for Dortmund these days?

    Cheers Holic !

I’m surprised we haven’t been linked with Jeremy Corbin yet if we’re after that many left wingers.

There’s another rumour that next season’s Premier League fixtures are out in the morning. Kick off in eight weeks – better hope there’s a lot of work going on under the surface.

  3. on 12 Jun 2019 at 11:25 pm3TTG

I’m not impressed with most of the transfer gossip and believe before we make progress we need to sell to free up space and money especially to reduce our salary bill.
Nevertheless I think there is mileage in both the stories on Carrasco and Fraser. I fear we will sign Carrasco but would prefer Fraser not just for the reasons cited but I think he has growth potential with a team with strikers like ours and I believe he could play in the number 10 role.
A lot of what happened at the end of last season hit me hard. The awful tail- off in form , the failure to improve defensively, the continued awayday blues , that pathetic second half performance in the final and as much as anything the Suarez deal which was so ill-conceived it was epic.
The club have not written to me to renew my season ticket but I didn’t receive an invitation to apply to go to Baku. Maybe I’ve slipped off their radar. Certainly at the moment they are in danger of slipping off mine

  4. on 12 Jun 2019 at 11:43 pm4bt8

There’s Bernie Sanders and a couple of dozen others available on the American market. It would be a typical Arsenal deal, with Bernie’s agent stipulating that he has to campaign in America during the first year of his contract.

  5. on 12 Jun 2019 at 11:58 pm5bathgooner

Interesting stuff, H. I share your enthusiasm for Fraser though you underestimate how arcane the Doric can be, even to other Scots. ‘I wonder how Unai will respond to him when he walks in with, ‘Fit like, min?

TTG, I share all your feelings about the club this season and have left block 100. If the owner can’t be arsed to attend the club’s biggest game in 15 years, I shan’t be spending the thick end of £3k on two season tickets.

  6. on 13 Jun 2019 at 12:03 am6OsakaMatt

Is Sarr the one who threw himself
    to the ground with alarming
    regularity? I remember them having
a quick divey winger. If so, I don’t
want him – VAR won’t be good for
    Sarr.

  7. on 13 Jun 2019 at 12:25 am7Trev

TTG – I’m pinning my hopes on the terrible end of season collapse being down to fatigue.

We seemed to completely run out of ideas and energy all at the same time and that after some excellent performances against Tottenham, Chelsea, Man Utd, Napoli and Valencia.

Suddenly we were a million miles from those performances in a horrendous run of league games. It was pretty obvious that some players were being kept back fot the Europa League matches, a stupidly high risk strategy which backfired badly in the final.
Even there though, the first half was quite good, if wasteful, before we seized up again.

This, though, was the first season where the team were asked to press. They seemed to gradually run out of steam for that too though.
The same thing happened to Liverpool in the early days of Klopp. Up and down performances suggested a lack of the fitness required for the task.

We will certainly need a bigger, better quality squad if the press is to be a regular strategy. Rumours of our spending power don’t offer much hope of that.

It feels like the club is just being allowed to drift downwards by an owner who cares only about his share price – unlikely to suffer as a big chunk of real estate in central London.

He stood by while Gazidis mismanaged us into our present trough, allowing players to leave for way below their market value, while paying bloated fees for second raters and salaries which have soothed what should be our top players into a deep sleep.

  8. on 13 Jun 2019 at 1:49 am8North Bank Ned

Back of the envelope calculations here at Castle Ned put Sarr in the 35 million-45 million pounds range and Frazer closer to 30 million pounds than 20 million.

With Bath withdrawing his financial backing, what hope do we have of raising those sorts of sums?

  9. on 13 Jun 2019 at 1:58 am9North Bank Ned

Trev@7 makes a good point about fatigue and how tiring pressing is. Losing Ramsey to injury towards the end of the season was a double blow in that regard. Other already tired legs had a lot of extra kilometres to cover as a result.

  10. on 13 Jun 2019 at 6:55 am10Dexter

I think Carrasco would be a good signing. I read a piece on another blog about the Wanda group who had a stake in Atletico then bought the same Chinese club Carrasco was sold to. Seems well dodgy when you look at it from that perspective. And rather than just the simplistic view that he only went to China for money, sk doesn’t have any ambition.

Almost every player and person is motivated by money, thanks to this horrible capitalist system we have!

Get me Corbyn and Saunders stat!!

  11. on 13 Jun 2019 at 9:04 am11OsakaMatt

So, it’ll be wandaful if we buy
    Carrasco 🙂

    I noticed Athletico sold 2
players to China at the same
time. I don’t know the ins and
outs of why Carrasco went and
    don’t really care. My concern
    would be his adjustment time
for the PL after a year of playing
at a much lower level. It will be
    quite tough for him

  12. on 13 Jun 2019 at 9:48 am12Trev

I think we should definitely go for Fraser cos he already knows We’re all dooooomed !

  13. on 13 Jun 2019 at 10:02 am13OsakaMatt

The fixture list is out – tricky
    start, big games at Xmas/
    New Year and banana skins
at the end. Apart from that,
    and the 19 away games,
    everything is good.

  14. on 13 Jun 2019 at 10:13 am14TTG

    Bath,
So sorry to hear you’re going. I have renewed but with the enthusiasm I have for a trip to the dentist . I agree with Trev that the physical condition of the players dropped alarmingly at the back end and presumably this is behind the sacking of Darren Burgess. But a lot of responsibility must lie with Emery’s erratic team selection especially those two home games at the end of the season.
I believe that over the next few seasons as the reality of a Kroenke owned Arsenal kicks in there will be a steady drift away of the regulars .
As for Newcastle away I’ve yet to consider the prospect. I do remember Gervinho being sent off in his first game for us there when we began a season there a few years ago

  15. on 13 Jun 2019 at 11:22 am15Cynic

VAR won’t be good for anyone, OM.

    It will ruin next season.

  16. on 13 Jun 2019 at 12:44 pm16OsakaMatt

    I can’t agree Cynic.
All we are saying is give VAR a
    chance ?
    Rubbish defending and disappearing
up our own Arsenals away from home
is much more likely to ruin next season.

  17. on 13 Jun 2019 at 11:12 pm17Steve T

I remember back in the Highbury days The Gooner running an article in their opening edition of the season showing how many players we had been linked with over the closed season. It not only showed those linked but also the source of the information. Over that period we had been linked with 176 players. Out of that 176, something like only 30 actually moved clubs. Out of that, we signed one. Ever since then I have paid little to no attention to the transfer gossip until it’s actually made official.

I share the apathy mentioned by many. I hate Kroenke with a passion. I hate his ownership and I hate what he is doing to this club. I did renew my season ticket but it was very much a last minute decision. I only renewed as the person I go with had renewed his. Last year I made 6 home games. If I make that many this year I will be amazed. It will also take something quite remarkable to happen for me to renew for next year.

Sad to see regulars giving up their season tickets. Hope springs eternal and I have renewed my pair. Also looking forward to a long weekend in Newcastle in August to get the season going – I enjoy that city with its imposing architecture and friendly citizens, even if I need oxygen after the 12 flights of steps up to the visiting supporters seats.

Looking forward to seeing Reiss Nelson running at defences and Rob Holding returning to centre half.

    Have we bought anyone yet?

I too am in favour of Fraser. He ticks more boxes than Carrasco. Several times I watched him he looked quite a fighter, and skilled too. In the end might have to console with Carrasco, just get one of them :-).

Heh, Ned @8. My decision not to renew my 2 STs in the North Upper removes 20 minutes from Mesut’s annual commitment to Arsenal assuming a 40-hour week. Minimal impact and almost certainly unnoticed and unlamented by the club and certainly unnoticed by Mesut.

Thanks TTG @14. I still have access to a silver membership and will choose to attend matches that appeal to me rather than continuing the recent feeling of being on a treadmill that had become a bit of a chore. I’ll probably still go to more games than Steve T will be able to attend!

  35. on 14 Jun 2019 at 8:23 pm35TTG

It appears that Edu is very close to being appointed as Technical Director although he won’t start work until Brazil are out of the Copa America. I have poor contacts at the club now but I have been told that there will be an emphasis on bringing in Guendouzi type signings – young players with high perceived potential. I hope they don’t forget that we have a few decent youngsters already at the club . This is probably a more sustainable way of building a competitive squad but will require us to be patient . If it means no more Lichtsteiners I will regard this as progress

  36. on 14 Jun 2019 at 8:37 pm36Cynic

Steve T – “At Arsenal we do not accept or tolerate behaviour of this nature,” said a statement from the Gunners.

I’ve always thought Phil Neville was a prat but I like his intensity in this job but feel he could drop the waistcoat.
I’d be very surprised if this England team won the World Cup. They make far too many errors and I was disappointed at both the final ball ( except Beth Mead’s beautiful set up for the goal) and the quality and physicality when in on goal. Jill Scott made several great runs and then headed pathetically . Nikita Paris challenged at the far post very weakly .
Hopefully we will get better and we did recycle the ball well but Argentina going forward were poor.

  45. on 15 Jun 2019 at 11:55 am45Dexter

I think he’s too thick to be a good coach. He talks in cliches as well.

But mostly, it’s the fucking waistcoat!! 🙂

  46. on 15 Jun 2019 at 12:09 pm46Dexter

I wouldn’t be too gutted if Torreira left. But on 2 conditions.

We get far more than the mooted £35m and we signed someone like Doucoure to replace him.

  47. on 15 Jun 2019 at 12:16 pm47Dexter

I’m not too attached to too many of our players these days!

Laca, Auba (although if a Chinese club offered us 100m for him I’d take it!), Bellerin, Holding, Leno…and I’d wanna give a load of the kids and younger players a go before getting rid.

  48. on 15 Jun 2019 at 1:33 pm48Cynic

You don’t build a winning team with kids these days. It was rare enough before the game went money mad.

What we need is a couple of blokes from Barnsley called Wilf to scout the lower leagues. Preferably with a whippet on a string to keep him company and a missus who can feed the lad up with steak and eggs while he lodges with them.

    🙂

Seriously though, we’ve neglected the home market for years and years and there’s players to be found if you look. Fed up with milky overseas types who run away the minute things get tough, or who dream of playing at a better club.

  49. on 15 Jun 2019 at 2:31 pm49Dexter

I am kinda hoping we will add a few to my skeleton crew of a squad!

  50. on 15 Jun 2019 at 2:58 pm50OsakaMatt

    We don’t keep players long
enough to get attached to these
    days.
Lolo and Nacho will be the two
I’ll miss from the current squad.

  51. on 15 Jun 2019 at 7:25 pm51bathgooner

I feel likewise on attachment to players – changed days. I respect Kos and Nacho for their commitment to the club but recognise their days are numbered and they will leave soon and think they should not be difficult to replace. I would be disappointed if we sold Laca whose workrate and finishing reminds me of IW8 but the bond is yet to reach the intensity of those with most players from ’89-92 and ’98-07. I don’t care who we sell from the rest of the squad. They can all be replaced if the owner approves the cash release. Perhaps my feeling semi-detached from the team is just me – my sense that this is not the club with which I fell in love or perhaps it’s the game with its obsession with money and the mercenary nature of players today that has changed the relationship. I’m definitely more of a customer than fan these days.

I fully agree with Cynic. We have neglected the home market for far too long. There are gems scattered throughout the UK leagues just waiting for the opportunity to fight for the Arsenal. Latter day Dixons, Boulds, Winterburns, Wrights, Smiths, etc. are still out there. It’s just about finding them before our rivals do and blending them in the right proportions with the global talent whom we can afford and the best of the youth coming through the club. Simples!

  52. on 15 Jun 2019 at 9:03 pm52Dexter

    Bath
Laca is definitely NOT on my sell list! He’s exactly the type of player I like. He seems committed and honest.

Of all the past players I like and who were my heroes, most aren’t home grown!

Bergkamp, Pires Henry to name but three! Lauren and Gilberto too. While so called legends like Wright and Merson spout shite about the club….

  53. on 15 Jun 2019 at 9:58 pm53bathgooner

Agreed on DB10, TH14, RP7, lauren and Gilberto. I would add FL8 too. I also really loved the midfield of PV4 and EP17. Never saw their like again.

Merson is no legend and he’s been an embarrassment since he left – getting worse too.

However IW8 is a proper Arsenal man. Loves the club. Proper legend too.

cba, 60s footage of East Texas garage bands is rarer than a error-free Mustafi game. The bands played local dances, weren’t on TV and not many people owned 8mm home movie cameras. This isn’t Mouse and the Traps, but it is 60s garage footage, a mash-up of, as identified, the Lost Souls of Euclid, Shadows of the Knight, Eric and the Norsemen, the Grayps and the Doughboys.

  82. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:00 pm82bt8

Yes, those songs are old, which makes them good in one way, as in provoking memories. The fact is though, most of them are pretty bad.

  83. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:18 pm83Dexter

I think given the well publicised parsimony of the current regime, promoting Freddie to the 1st team would appear to suggest more and more young players will be fast tracked. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, provided these youngsters are complemented by a few shrewd additions via the transfer market.
Theres the likes of Chambers Bielik Holding
AMN Guendouzi Whillock Nelson, Smith Rowe and Nketiah to be considered over the pre-season. Maybe Bielik will come into the defence (or as a DM)? While AMN gets opportunities further up the pitch? Nelson showing he can cut it as the teams 1st choice left wing wizard?

I’d love it if that happened… let’s face it, were not going to improve the squad by actually spending money, not with Kroenke the twat at the helm.

  84. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:23 pm84Dexter

But even if all the young players came in and did well, we’ll still need to buy a left back and a replacement for Ozil. He has to go this summer.

  85. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:32 pm85TTG

    Dexter
While you are right to use the word parsimony I think the parsimony is necessary because Gazidis (and Wenger) completely wrecked the financial structure of the club. Gazidis was a populist like one or two current politicians I could name and bowed to fan pressure on signings. The window where we acquired Mustafi, Xhaka and Perez was a disaster leavened only by the acquisition of Rob Holding. That summer of folly cost us £87 million in fees for a very dubious return. The wage structure had been controlled by Wenger but we caved in on it and the percentage of total revenue taken up by salaries is about £50 million too high. Given that Ozil’s salary represents about a third of that the significance of that deal is there for all to see. That’s why I hope we look at signing Fraser rather than Carrasco and put the emphasis on younger signings rather than superstars with very greedy agents.

  86. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:34 pm86Dexter

    Leno
    Bellerin Bielik Holding LB
    Chambers AMN
    Nelson Whillock Auba
    Laca

An exciting, young mostly home grown energetic side, with bags of potential and loads of mistakes too, no doubt!

  87. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:38 pm87Dexter

    TTG

Yes, I agree, particularly that transfer window was a disaster which has had long standing consequences.

  88. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:41 pm88Dexter

I think our team has no identity and is full of average players like Mustafi and Xhaka, or ones who are just going through the motions (yes, you Mesut!)… another reason to have a clear out and fill the squad with talented hungry young players…

  89. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:45 pm89Dexter

Selling Ozil, Mustafi, Xhaka, Koscielny, Mhki would free up space in the squad, bring in money, reduce the wage bill and the squads age…

But I think wed need to keep one of Kola or Nacho…

  90. on 16 Jun 2019 at 3:52 pm90Dexter

Gks Leno, Martinez and possibly the German U21 keeper. Position sorted!
RB. Bellerin, AMN, Chambers. Sorted, providing Hector makes a full recovery.
CB. Holding, Sokratis, Mavroponas, Bielik, Chambers, Nacho, Medley. This position again is dependent on the recovery of a player returning from long term I jury, plus whether or not Emery is going to give young players a chance… position could probably do with a top quality signing.
LB. Nacho, Kolasinac. Position needs strengthening!

  91. on 16 Jun 2019 at 4:00 pm91Dexter

DM. Torreira, Chambers, Bielik. Again, providing Emery gives the returning loanee a go, we could really have decent options in this position for the 1st time in years.
Box to box. Guendouzi, AMN, Smith-Rowe, Whillock… with Ramsey gone, this position is up for grabs. We need goals from central midfield. Given the lack of experience and question Mark’s over the options we have, Emery may well need to buy in some quality. .

  92. on 16 Jun 2019 at 6:13 pm92Dexter

    AM. Ozil, Whillock, Mhki, Smith-Rowe.

If Ozil and Henrihk leave, then wed be left with two unproven kids, probably too risky so another signing would be needed…

Wide forwards. Auba, Iwobi, Nelson, Mhki, AMN… again at least one new signing seems reasonable…

Striker. Laca, Auba, Eddie, we are probably ok in this area, although last season we missed Welbeck at times.

  93. on 16 Jun 2019 at 6:18 pm93Dexter

    So, in summary…

    New signings;
A back up keeper, a centre back, a left back, a b2b midfielder, a number 10 and a wide forward please!

With Mustafi, Koscielny, Kolasinac, Ospina, Jenkinson, Xhaka, Ozil and Mhki all leaving…

Over to you Emery and co!

I’ve been suffering with a killer hangover today! Needed something to take my mind off it…

  95. on 16 Jun 2019 at 7:09 pm95TTG

    Dexter,
No need to apologise your analysis was very good .
For a club who need cash and to reduce its wage bill you have to look at flogging lazy assets and retaining the thriving ones .
That means we’d need to lose ( preferably sell) :
Ospina, Mustafi, Elneny, Jenkinson, Kolasinac, Koscielny , Mkhitaryan, Asano, Nwakali and Macey.

I’d keep Nacho and look at promoting Bielik, Willock , Saka , Smith- Rowe , Nelson and possibly Ballard or Medley. I’d put Nketiah , Amaechi and Sheaf on a six month loan because they need to play .
That gives us a need for at least
A goalkeeper ( sounds like Schubert will join to be loaned out)
Two CBs- maybe one who could cover at full-back
    A left-back
    A holding midfielder , a no.10 and a wide player.
Would that balance the books ? If the purchases were young with add-ons probably who knows but it is far too radical surgery given where we should be.
I just wonder how good the analysis at the club is ? Maybe they should consult Goonerholic !

  96. on 16 Jun 2019 at 7:36 pm96Dexter

Haha! It wouldn’t hurt the club to see where they’re going wrong!

  97. on 16 Jun 2019 at 8:08 pm97TTG

I forgot Mesut. Selling him for £10 mill to Turkey and paying half his wages would relieve us of a huge burden ( circa £30 mill plus over three years). It’s really imperative he goes given the financial burden

  98. on 16 Jun 2019 at 8:16 pm98Dexter

Yeah, I think the outgoings are as important as the additions.

  99. on 16 Jun 2019 at 9:33 pm99Bayonne Jean

cba, thanks for Wilbert Harrison. Clear out the dead wood, bring in or promote some athletic and hungry young ‘uns, do this Canned Heat cover with a revised title, and we’ll be good to go.

The extent of surgery this squad requires is going to take more windows than I suspect Unai will be granted. I hope someone in the club is going to be able to have a long-term strategy and someone else is going to show some fiscal competence. Not good.

  102. on 16 Jun 2019 at 10:20 pm102bt8

    While I wouldn’t particularly
    disagree with the various
    analyses I think Bath’s right
and we won’t do as much
pruning or buying as many fans
    would like this summer.

  105. on 17 Jun 2019 at 2:24 am105OsakaMatt

And if we do get Schubert he
    must go straight into the
first XI with Medley and Ballad.

  106. on 17 Jun 2019 at 3:41 am106North Bank Ned

    OM on song.

  107. on 17 Jun 2019 at 3:45 am107North Bank Ned

Or we could resign Alex Song, still only 31 and playing in Turkey. A back three of Medley, Ballard and Song would hit all the right notes.

  108. on 17 Jun 2019 at 8:16 am108OsakaMatt

    🙂 Ned

With that back 3 I fear UE
would have to face the music
    quite soon

  109. on 17 Jun 2019 at 11:27 am109TTG

I’m struggling to believe that a side in dire need of reinforcement in defence and with a limited budget would pay out £25 m of that on a CB they will loan back for a year. Are they mad?
    Don’t answer that ?

  110. on 17 Jun 2019 at 11:49 am110OsakaMatt

If the stories out of France
    are true then Maurice and
    Saliba would be basically our
    summer transfer budget
    spent.
Of course we can raise more
    money by selling but both
    those buys are unproven.

  111. on 17 Jun 2019 at 11:52 am111OsakaMatt

On the other hand some of
    the CBs and Wide players
    they might replace have
    proven not good enough

  112. on 17 Jun 2019 at 12:31 pm112Dexter

Regardless of the veracity of the transfer rumours, one thing that’s noticable is the company we are keeping…

    Brighton, Norwich and Newcastle.

And not Liverpool, Man Utd etc.

    Says it all.

    We are mid table baby!!

  113. on 17 Jun 2019 at 5:25 pm113bt8

    .

    Oh well.

I think I have reverted to the mind set of Spurs fan circa 2005. ?

  114. on 17 Jun 2019 at 5:44 pm114Dexter

    Btm… Haha!

    TTG
I’d really hope that if we do sign this young CB for 25m then it’s with a view to installing him into the heart of our defence immediately. We simply don’t have the resources to be doing deals like that.

  115. on 17 Jun 2019 at 7:37 pm115TTG

Good to see some interesting thinking in switching Freddie and Bouldy. Bouldy has never looked comfortable in a front-line role but was a great youth coach. Freddie has impressed many people around the club. I never viewed him as a likely coach when he was playing for us and posing on the side of buses in his pants. But he seems to have really improved a number of young players last season. You would not be surprised I’m pleased to see a better pipeline developing between the U21s and the first team .
