Tierney, VAR, And Summer Tournaments

Jun 24th, 2019 by 'holic

Apologies all, I didn’t realise it had been a week since the last post, not that there has been much to write about other than the dreaded transfer speculation. The lack of apparent activity is probably due to the fact that the international players were, or still are, in action and having a deserved (or not!) holiday. There is another believable theory that any new signings will not be announced until the new Adidas kit launch, now just a week away.

Who might it be? I wrote of Yannick Carrasco a couple of weeks back. All has gone quiet on that front, interestingly. The rumour du jour is that we have bid from £15-25m for young Celtic left-back Keiran Tierney. The Glasgow club are said to be asking for £40m for an inexperienced player with a poor injury record. They won’t be getting that from us!

I see from the drinks that a number of you are following the Womens World Cup. Me too, and I’m finding it largely enjoyable other than the antics of the Cameroon team in the match against England, and the length of time the referees are taking over some VAR reviews. I thought the FA were making improvements in the Cup matches where it was trialled last season. Usually quick and as the competition progressed they tried to give more information on the big screens to keep the supporters informed.

They have stopped short of what would be the major plus of such a system. Mic up the referees so we can hear what is being done. Rugby Union and cricket administrators trust their officials enough to allow that. The FA it would seem do not.

The other thing I would do is to make the offside law more straightforward. It seems harsh that your uncut toenail can be adjudged to be offside. Let’s go back to there being clear daylight between the attacker and the last defender.

France have looked impressive in the tournament but face a test against holders, the USA, in the quarter-final. England too are getting results and improving as the tournament progresses, which is always a good sign. There still much football to be played, however.

I have also caught glimpses here and there of the Copa America. Those on the other side of the pond may care to agree or disagree with me that the tournament has yet to spark into life?

I haven’t caught any of the African Cup of Nations. Alex Iwobi impressed as Nigeria opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Burundi. Maybe I will catch some of the latter stages of the tournament?

Finally I have a plug for another piece by Dave Seager in his Gunners Town blog. We are thinking on very similar lines for the coming season and Freddie Ljungberg’s appointment as a first team coach would look to be a shrewd move if we were to offer more first team opportunities to our best young talent.

Have a good week, ‘holics.

    Thanks Danny. Much appreciated.

Evening all. England U21 just went 2-1 up against Croatia. 40 minutes to go.

  4. on 24 Jun 2019 at 11:26 pm4Cynic

The daylight thing was a myth though, it was a suggestion on how a linesman could decide on a quick one (ie if by the time the lino saw it, there was clear daylight he could reasonably assume the player was offside when the pass was made).

The more FIFA or whoever tries to improve these things they just make them worse.

Offside was very simple when I was growing up. Two players have to be between you and the goal when the ball is passed forward. When they started with all this ‘active’ and ‘second phase’ bollocks is when it started to go wrong.

Level should be offside IMO as it’s not two players between you and the goal. We wouldn’t be pissing about with “Oh dear, his knee is offside but the rest of him is on. So he’s offside” if you had to have two bodies between you and the goal.

Football was simple. It’s being destroyed by poor refs, poor changes to the laws and …. VAR.

    Thanks for the post guvnor.

    Time does seem-to have
    slowed. It’s been like watching
    Xhaka turn, you know you’re
in trouble but you hope that
    somehow it’ll all be ok.

    The offside rule will always
be down to inches no matter
how you change it and the
    current one seems fair enough
    to me.
    Miking up the refs has
to come I think – it’s so obvious.
I wonder if the FA are worried
    about the refs incompetence or
the image of foul mouthed ranty
    players being heard – ignorant
fuckers should clean up their act.

Some of the refs’ voices must be so embarrassingly whiny or sissy the FA is trying to keep them out of the TV viewers’ ears.

  26. on 25 Jun 2019 at 4:01 am26bt8

Just a theory. Poor one at that. They are probably all baritones headed for operatic careers just as soon as they ref their last one.

  27. on 25 Jun 2019 at 4:31 am27North Bank Ned

I think OM@19 is on the mark about why the FA won’t mike up refs. He is also right that no matter where you draw the line, some offside calls will always be marginal.

  28. on 25 Jun 2019 at 5:36 am28Dexter

Cant we just swap Carrasco for Xhaka ffs?

  30. on 25 Jun 2019 at 7:38 am30ClockEndRider

Must confess to being more than a little bemused at all the coverage and fanfare of the women’s World Cup. The level of football is Sunday morning park standard. I’m happy to laud equality but it has to be on the basis of something more tangible than blanket BBC love bombing.

  31. on 25 Jun 2019 at 7:39 am31TTG

Not sure all refs speak English or very good English but they should do in the Premier League! Cynic is right tge rule changes have spoilt the game. The new handball rules allied to VAR means chaos next season detracting from the game causing delays and disjointed passages. Another reason to dread tge new season.
More worried today about getting past the Aussies. I HATE this Aussie team with Scumbag Warner and the wimp Smith .

  32. on 25 Jun 2019 at 7:47 am32ClockEndRider

I’m convinced that the VAR thing is deliberate. Firstly with all the technology available there is absolutely no need to draw out the decision making as they do. They want it to spoil the show. Because Secondly, tv and media networks make money firstly from the match itself and secondly firm controversy caused during it, much of which centres around refereeing decisions. If you take this away, then that’s significant revenue taken away from broadcasters which will in turn be reflected in the next round of rights bidding. You can already see that the Premier League rights are no longer appreciating in value, an interesting corollary being Scudamores retirement and the premier leagues inability to find a replacement. Who wants to be seen as the chief exec who presided over the first fall of rights revenues since the PL was formed?
To us it’s a game. To them it’s a revenue stream. Unfortunately ne’er the twain….

  33. on 25 Jun 2019 at 8:38 am33Bathgooner

Thanks for the updates Guvna. Caught the second half of the Lioness’ win over the Intolerable Lions. Good self control in the face of provocation and mass hysteria. Impressed.

Totally agree CER@ 32. Ridiculous and unnecessary fiddling with the Laws over recent years. Expect ‘spontaneous’ ad breaks during VAR windows shortly akin to the ad breaks during gridiron time outs.

  34. on 25 Jun 2019 at 12:58 pm34Cynic

So if Man City get chucked out of the Champions League, we get chucked into it.

I’m not holding my breath on that one.

  36. on 25 Jun 2019 at 3:56 pm36bt8

Bath you may be on to something, god forbid! Spontaneous ad breaks may indeed be the true motivation of VAR. As Cynic might say, it always pays to be, er, skeptical. 🙂

  37. on 25 Jun 2019 at 3:59 pm37TTG

England playing like Arsenal did in Baku.
Understand Saliba deal is done and he will be loaned back. That suggests that the £40 m budget is rubbish or Emery is being very generous to his successor . Suspect Koscielny will stay for one more season

  38. on 25 Jun 2019 at 4:13 pm38Dexter

    TTG

Haha! I hope he is not being too generous, although he will certainly have to go some to leave the squad in worse shape than he found it.

I think the 40m was always crap, plus we will surely be selling a few players, or maybe a couple of astute swaps (Mustafi for Perisic, or Xhaka for a dust pan and brush)…

  39. on 25 Jun 2019 at 4:45 pm39Dexter

Cazorla racked up 10 assists for Villareal last season… blimey! That is a hell of an achievement!

So happy for him, hes playing again.

    OM
I suspect ( as we now have Ben Knapper co-ordinating loans) that Bochum guaranteed Osei- Tutu regular starts. He is not likely at this stage to start in the Bundesliga. If I were him I might have tried to pick up some medals at Celtic !

  97. on 26 Jun 2019 at 11:26 am97Dexter

As much as the club, board, owner and previous regime have all been criticised for not investing enough and/ir wisely I do hope we don’t listen to the bulkshit spouted in the media and over pay for Tierney. He is a massive risk.

Charlie Nicholas (who are generally agree on most things Arsenal related) suggested a fee around the €20m mark was about right for him.

    We shall see I guess…

    CBA

    Love your work pal!

  98. on 26 Jun 2019 at 11:28 am98Dexter

I think Bochum are a fairly big and well established club. Like Hamburg and others they’ve found themselves on the second rung of German football.

I will definitely be following them next season.

  99. on 26 Jun 2019 at 12:57 pm99Dexter

Milan throwing in Ricardo Rodriguez for Lucas now are they?

We were strongly linked to him a few years back, which is all these hacks need to make up a story.

We have also apparently identified Cabellos from Real as a potential replacement. I have only checked him out on who scored, so no clue if hes suited to the PL.??

I wouldn’t be arsed if we sold Torreira as I think we can get better options. However we would need to get a shed load of money for him, given the apparent desire of Milan to sign him. And wed have to have a top replacement lined up, no dawdling! !

But, seeing how we already need about 5 new signings, I’m not sure creating another need is sound business practice!

    I’m curious to see how
    Torreira does next season
    – will it be the dynamic
first half of the season CM
    or the slightly knackered
    looking one from the
    second half.
I really hope the stories are
    just media bollocks as I’m
    hopeful it’s the dynamic one
and I agree with Dexter that
    we’ve got enough on our
    plate already.

I saw Jenks mentioned as a
    makeweight in the Tierney
    deal. Probably nonsense but
    The Corporal could end up

    Saliba, both defenders, both
    young. I don’t know if they’re

Frankly the mess our finances are in surprises me as I had great respect for the prudence of Arsene Wenger. I never expected his legacy to be so hamstrung by poor financial mismanagement. But why don’t the board cop their share of flak too? It seems they have been absolutely useless and derelict in their financial duty . As for Ivan Gazidis…….
Looking at the plan to make us competitive with our rivals it lays in tatters. It’s such a difficult job for Emery to compete .

AC Milan have been banned from next season’s Europa League over breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

The Serie A club’s suspension from European football was announced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Cas ruled in favour of European football governing body Uefa which had accused AC Milan of violating the spending regulations.

“AC Milan is excluded from Uefa club competitions of the sporting season 2019-2020,” it said.

We’ve been linked with Dan-Axel Zagadou from Dortmund.

A back four of Bellerin, Zagadou, Holding and Tierney and we’d have a decent defence again.

    there’s a joy to homebrew
but you couldn’t just start tomorrow
    without serious outlay

    temporarily donating bottles
    to a friend
    100 odds
    hooch needs bottled
    he’s no bottles
they are a FUCKIN EURO each to buy
    he showed me
if you didn’t already have the cunts
    they’re proper oul beer bottles
    but a fuckin euro
    away an fuck

a fuckin euro for a bottle
the fuckin contents cost considerably less
    that’s the whole bastard point

    a euro
    .

    fuckin ridiculous

but i have them 30 odd years
    30 very odd years

    fuck
even a standard demijohn is pushing €10

my back kitchen is worth a fortune

clive or nigel or whatever earlier today
near shit when he saw and
WHEN I GOT HIM TO SHUT UP

think i musta put it on for herself
    don’t really recall

    it’s lovely
    i measured it and it’s 6.5%
    it tastes like fruit juice

think i’ll bottle this and carb it up
    should be amazing

it’s nice when ye get a wee surprise

    well
    they’re not my ducks
i’m merely permitted to live beside them
    according to the geese
who are bullying but effective organizational bastards

    it really is amazing
    the ducks are very sectarian/racist/morrissey
    they walk in line
but only and always by type
so you’ll get 4 of one sort
then 6of another then etc blaaa
all followed by the geese who allow
the ducks to walk about the place
out of the goodness of their goose hearts
    they stand guard
and when they think everyone has had enough
    the big fucker roars and
and the wee ducks get back
in their 4 brown ones 6 white ones 10 tall ones etc etc
world order long line and bugger off down the road again

    it’s the most bizarre spectacle
    and
the eggs that come outta their hoops are delicious
so it’s all the more amazing

    Phew !

Just had the time, and confidence!, to do a complete back knird of all 219 posts !

    cba,
sorry to hear you’ve rearranged all your finest features. Not sure how you managed it – i missed that somewhere on my careless jog through – but hope it’s starting to improve.

Good to see your spell of convalescence – and that is a very tricky spell – has not been wasted.
I would like to propose that posts 5-214 are repackaged and sent to Brussels as the “New Brexit Deal”. That should confuse the bastards into giving us everything we want – on pain of another 200 to come if they don’t !

Sheep are indeed stupid animals – your post 192 refers.
Before actually falling over the edge of the cliff, all the daft thing needed to do was a …… *begins drum roll * …. Ewe turn.

    Thank you.

  226. on 01 Jul 2019 at 7:46 pm226Cynic

Unfortunately he signed an extension to a five year deal last August and is under contract until 2023, Palace want £80m+ for him and we’ve supposedly offered £40m.

So unless we can sweeten the deal with some misfits, we are far more liley to sign someone like Gary Cahill than Zaha.

Which would be fine by me.

  227. on 01 Jul 2019 at 8:55 pm227Dexter

Regardless of whether we signed him or not, it kinda suggests the idea of a £40m transfer kitty is bollocks.

    Which is nice.

  228. on 01 Jul 2019 at 8:58 pm228Dexter

I am totally not worried AT ALL that we are going balls out to spend the majority of our budget on an attacker, rather than defenders…

Nope, not worried one bit, no sirree Bob…

  229. on 01 Jul 2019 at 9:06 pm229Dexter

Oh and I would be utterly underwhelmed if we signed Cahill…

  230. on 01 Jul 2019 at 10:28 pm230Sancho P

Bidding £40 million for Duane Dibley (thanks Cynic) is a red herring. It’s an Ebay starting bid and we will never match the Palace evaluation because we can’t. It’s just bluff to look like we’re doing something when we most certainly aren’t. Just as well because he really isn’t all that good.

  231. on 02 Jul 2019 at 12:35 am231Cynic

Cahill could be great or shit but Zaha is very underwhelming, I have to say.

Just as well it’s all cobblers.

  232. on 02 Jul 2019 at 1:37 am232OsakaMatt

Cahill has a whiff of Jonny
    Evans about him. Anyway,
we won’t sign him or Zaha
    so doesn’t really matter.
    Nothing about Saliba or
    Tierney which I thought we
    might actually do.

  233. on 02 Jul 2019 at 4:14 am233OsakaMatt

    Though a quick google shows
    there’s still plenty of waffle
    about Tierney.
Leno has taken the No 1 shirt,
which is logical enough. At this
    moment we’re gambling a lot
    on his fitness and form.

  234. on 02 Jul 2019 at 10:25 am234Cynic

Cahill is free, experienced, English (if quotas still matter, I’m out of the loop on the Johnny Foreigner Rule) and a centre back so he ticks all the boxes.

There’s also that box marked OLD that he ticks, but I would argue he is at least as good as Koscielny, who people seem to think is worth keeping around even though half fit, and he’s the same age.

It’s a no brainer signing for a club with “no money”.

  235. on 02 Jul 2019 at 3:06 pm235Dexter

80m or anywhere near that is a joke! The market is more inflated than Piers Morgan and Donald Teumps egos combined!

Palace can fuck off getting all upset. They paid 6m for Zaha and are taking the right piss with their valuation of him, and the fact they stupidly agreed to the 25% sell on clause has nothing to do with wanting 80m I’m sure!

I hope it’s a smoke screen so we just get a few other players under the radar.

We’ve signed the next Cristiano Ronaldo anyway!! 🙂

  236. on 02 Jul 2019 at 3:11 pm236Dexter

    Cynic

Isnt Cahill as slow as fuck? i think he would get found out in our set up. Koscielny is more suited, but only when he is actually fit, which seems less and less these days. Personally, I’d probably let Koz go. Provided we signed at least one CB!

  237. on 02 Jul 2019 at 5:18 pm237OsakaMatt

    @234
    Some fair points and then
“I would argue he is at least
    as good as Koscielny”

    Welcome to Martinelli.
    We’re not lacking in teenage
    wingers.

  238. on 02 Jul 2019 at 6:36 pm238Cynic

Just an opinion but I think Koscielny is hugely over rated and always have. Simple long balls up the middle catch him out far too often, for example. Always have.

  239. on 02 Jul 2019 at 9:25 pm239TTG

I’m going to say it. Our girls have done really well but the error rate in women’s football is far too high especially when under pressure. Our defence makes an enormous number of mistakes . To give you some idea they are almost as poor defensively as Arsenal …men

    miles apart ?

  243. on 03 Jul 2019 at 5:38 am243Dexter

Kos is a far better defender than Cahil, although they’re very different defenders, in my opinion. I reckon they’d have made a good pairing!

Now on to reading the piece.

Excellent topics Guvna. I can simply observe that the brief spasm of efficiency in signing targets last season clearly related to someone who has left the building and we have reverted to type in our transfer dealing. All very sad.

Pretend I have written a piece this morning about the public nature of our negotiating for Tierney and Zaha, the new Brazilian wonderkid, and the Lionesses exit at the hands of USA.

Would have been perfection as a new blog post 🙁

    Holic,
I read it. Literary Viagra mate !

People can wax lyrical all day long about how tactically astute and what a genius coach Guardiola is, but as far as I am concerned hes just another Mourinho… albeit one whose teams play more attractive football…

He goes where the money is.

    What a cunt.

  251. on 03 Jul 2019 at 7:02 pm251Dexter

Oh and erm, great post by the way Holic!!

  252. on 03 Jul 2019 at 10:12 pm252bt8

Cahill would be a distinctly underwhelming signing but not quite in the putrid class of Jonny Evans. Close though.

  253. on 03 Jul 2019 at 10:17 pm253bt8

Ewe turn is definitely a new low.

I expect Trev will be feeling
    a bit sheepish now we’ve

Our Brazilian “wonderkid” seems to be an absolute bargain at £3.82 compared to the £113,000,000 that Athletico Madrid have shelled out for his Portuguese counterpart. Unless he’s crap, of course!

Anyone remember Souness signing Ali Dia, supposedly George Weah’s cousin?

  257. on 04 Jul 2019 at 10:40 am257OsakaMatt

    Lampard is the new Chelski
manager, I’d wish him luck but
    obviously I hope he fails.
Chavs finished above us in the
league and won the Ropey and
    still fired Sarri.

  260. on 04 Jul 2019 at 3:33 pm260Trev

Ewe lot can take the pea all you like but it seems Chelsea know ….

What we need is a younger, inexperienced manager who plays with his vegetables ….. please, this just has to go wrong ??

    Mange-tout !

  261. on 04 Jul 2019 at 6:59 pm261bt8

My old dog had the mange, Trev. Managed to eat all his veggies though, including the neighbor’s grass. Very popular he was, in some precincts.

  262. on 04 Jul 2019 at 7:08 pm262bt8

Abramovich, or possibly his assistants, have appointed a large number of managers in the years he has been in charge of Chelsea, and most of them were very good appointments. While hoping for the opposite, I would be surprised if Lampard turns out to be different. Pleasantly surprised that they took such a gamble and risk when it turned out more experience could have been a good thing. The question is, does the whiz kid have enough know how or will he just be pissing into the wind? Squirting into the scirocco?

  263. on 04 Jul 2019 at 7:55 pm263bt8

Some puns are bright and shiny while others are a bit more ewes’d.

    After being linked with
    Ceballos, we’re now being
    linked with Vasquez at

    until a Benzema story appears.

    I actually wouldn’t mind
Ceballos – not that I think
    he’s coming.
But we’ve a few options at CM,
    mostly young, and maybe we
should have a look at them first.

At mid-season in the realm of MLS the local boys, Minnesota United, have hit the heights of mid-table mediocrity with 27 points after a hard-fought win the other evening at home against San Jose Earthquakes. Minnesota keeper Vito Mannone (yes, that one) won man of the match honors. League best Los Angeles FC are on 40 points while first year club Cincinnati would be on a relegation course with 11 points if the league had such a thing as relegation.

Ex-Premier League faces dot the roster of many clubs across the league, and they say David Beckham’s new club Inter Miami, who begin play next season, is on the verge of signing Luis Suarez (of Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona). No confirmation yet but I hope they are rewriting the rules on biting the opposition…

A sign that someone at Arsenal is thinking about making a signing, and possibly more than just the Martinelli bloke: the official site has a quiz, “Can you name the last 50 Arsenal signings” and it was harder than I expected even with the clues given as to the date and the club each player was signed from. Sure sign we have made a lot of poor signings, AND that my memory is failing me.

The lack of a £40,000,001 bid for Wilf the Second – respect for Rostron, please – is reassuring, although had there been an actual release clause for Luis Suarez of 40 big ones, I could never see the logic in chipping in £10 mill purely for largesse.

Howevs, it seems the meeja are getting a touch uppity about us having the bare nerve to offer the piddling sum of £40 million for the erstwhile divey twat of this parish, presently known as Wilf (to his mates, i.e.us) Zaha. I think Zaha has improved hugely since his Mancy days but don’t know if he is a massive priority for us just now.

I just don’t seem to remember the meeja indignation at us tapping up Wilfy, when similar tactics were employed to try to relieve us of Messrs Fabregas, Vieira, van Persie etc etc.

    Welcome back, Holic.

I await your post with interest . Hope you had a good one ??

Nearly sixty? Is that looking back through the mist or forward in hope? If the latter, yer a near teenager and that puts a great deal of your proclamations in sharper focus than a crystal glass of raspberry home brew.

I watched the game at Boredom Wood yesterday. No one on view is ready for anything other than bit part action in the first team, except perhaps a couple of the Boreham Wood defenders who could knock Mustafi and Kolasinac into a cocked hat. What is a cocked hat by the way?

Glad you’ve survived the challenges of the West Country, H. I hope you discovered some wonderful local scrumpy to wean you off that Oirish muck.

Nice to see thirteen years after moving to Ashburton Grove and thereby netting the highest match day revenues in the league we are almost able to compete with the likes of Leicester, West Ham and Wolves are outspent by Everton and are not in the same spending stratosphere as United, Citeh , Liverpool and Chelsea. We are also fishing in a very different pond to our nasty neighbours.
If anyone wants to understand the harm that Kroenke ownership and totally inefficient stewardship of the finances ( added to the ailing years of Arsene ) have done that illustrates it perfectly.
Looks like we are settling for Dennis Suarez lite in Lucas Vasquez when we really should be looking at Zaha and struggling to sign Tierney for the sake of a couple of million. The sort of bonus that Ivan used to take for his estimable services to the club.
Ok Kroenke doesn’t have to pump money into the club but if he’s a great sports entrepreneur ( and he isn’t ) he could at least make sure the club is run properly
