Bayern Might Have Got Away With It But For Them Pesky Kids

Jul 18th, 2019 by 'holic

The Arsenal stepped up their pre-season preparations with a match against old foes Bayern Munich at the Dignity Health Sports Park.

Through these bleary eyes at 4am I thought the first-half an entertaining affair. Bernd Leno had the first save of any note to make when denying Thomas Muller, and a second followed from Ontuzans.

The Arsenal were not without threat, however, with Mesut Ozil not only standing out because of his hair colour. Indeed he was a whisker away from giving us the lead after a lung-bursting run from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to set him up.

Surprisingly goalless at the half, the match sprang into life four minutes after the break when Henrikh Mkhitaryan played Aubameyang in on the right and the striker’s cross was deflected in at his near post by the Bayern left-back Poznanski.

The Arsenal 1-0 Bayern Munich

It was a goal that we needed as Bayern had unleashed their first choice strike trio for the second-half. Serge Gnabry, keen to show his old club what they were missing, shave the far post which appeared to be covered by substitute goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The tall shot-stopper then had to go full length at the feet of Gnabry to deny him once more. Third time lucky when Gnabry crossed and Lewandowski, unmarked eight yards out, picked his spot with a typical headed equaliser.

The Arsenal 1-1 Bayern Munich

As the time ticked away we sent on a number of youngsters to give tiring older legs a rest. We awaited a penalty shoot-out but better lay in store when Tyreece John-Jules and Calum Chambers combined to tee up Eddie Nketiah for the clincher.

The Arsenal 2-1 Bayern Munich

They were not the only Young Guns to catch the eye. Joe Willock started alongside Granit Xhaka at kick-off and gave a fine account of himself in a box to box role and has surely given Unai Emery food for thought as the Premier League season looms ever closer.

The head coach was full of praise for his young charges post-match.

“I am very happy with their work every day in the training sessions and also today in the match. We are going to play next Saturday against Fiorentina, also in another match (against Real Madrid!), and we are going to use young players. It’s another chance for them to show us how they can respond, but today, for example, is very positive.”

All in all that was well worth getting up at sparrowfart for an overseas supporters Arsenal experience. Well done lads.

I really enjoyed this. Thought Auba and Mesut had excellent games as did both our goalkeepers. Our winner came via a John-Jules (who I am now officially excited about) assist and an Eddie finish. On the downside Mustafi managed to lose Lewandowski for their equaliser. Gnabry outstanding as a second half sub for Bayern.

Midfield and attack looked much better than defence (plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose).

Hope those US Gooners that went had a great day.

Great stuff H, cheers. My sparrow’s fart experience today sadly did not involve anything as interesting as watching football, so I’m grateful for the updates.

    Thanks for the report maestro.

Just a parochial comment to congratulate Arsenal’s summer fixture fixers for not scheduling the annual jaunt to Asia in favor of America. I am sure there are a few million Asian supporters who would have preferred the opposite but it has been many years of Asian trips prior to this year.

Unai Emery wants to sign some very “big” players but we already tried that approach with the BFG and it didn’t get us to the promised land. Better to focus on top qualitee, hit hard and hope.

Arsenal’s endorsement of Rwanda now extends not only to the shirts but also to the website banner. Apparently an endorsement of Thai:

    No, thank you very much.

    Holic
You are but a whippersnapper compared to me but I only came across the game right at the end. It was a good win. We beat them in a penalty shootout a couple of years ago in preseason but this was a fine effort.
I have grown to increasingly like Willock and if only we had equivalent defenders this old heart of mine might start racing in anticipation.
I like the quality of the players we are attempting to buy and re Ksn’s point Real May need to flog Ceballos if they want to sign a future galactic like Pogba so if we can integrate him into North London he might make a long- term Gooner. I’m hearing that it is quite likely that we will sign Cahill for a season until Saliba arrives. If we can flog Mustafi it wouldn’t be a stupid move Just as long as we don’t pick up Joe Hart! ?

Emilio and Mesult sharing the same bottle of peroxide?

  16. on 18 Jul 2019 at 11:47 pm16scruzgooner

ned@15, emi used only half as much. and he did a fantastic job between the sticks, a couple of top class saves or covers, and generally pretty solid. didn’t have a chance on their goal.

holic, that was the game, we saw the same. of all the defenders i actually worried most about the corners, nacho and amn. nacho looked old and slow (older and slower) and amn was floored, literally, three times by coman’s moves. he is NOT a right back.

ozil looked really good, he ran and ran and ran all game. three or four lung-busting runs that were not rewarded, and another similar quota that were, though they led to nought.

laca cut a frustrated figure. he was constantly on the inside shoulder of their right cb, ready to take an over-the-top chippy through-ball from xhaka, but the latter just wasn’t serving. four-five times laca was waving his arms after the play developed differently, and having stern words with the evening’s captain.

a word for the way we played with the youth after the two sets of subs: there were more incisive passes in those last minutes than all game, a couple of beautiful through-balls in the channels on either side of bayern’s box. robbie burton looks slight but he was a bit of a bastard in a couple of tackles. saka, nelson, and john-jules gave bayern all they could handle. of course, eddie scored, but the sequence before he scored, the previous trip down, he got a long ball from emi that the defender looked to have locked up, but he let it bounce. eddie moved around süle with perfect timing. it forced a good save by ulreich; he tried to split his near-post gap. he was a full foot shorter than süle, and just worked him; and once he got in front of him in the box held him off with fine strength.

calum chambers: looked assured, made the hockey assist to john-jules for the winner with a neat sidefoot, and generally used his 15 minutes well.

here’s an article that describes the supporter club scene in california (at least). adrian cazares is part of the south bay gooners, as am i…in fact, our contingent was one of the larger non-los angeles contingents. we joined with our gooner family and marched from our tailgating (lots of beer, very little by way of solids) singing our heads off. i got to meet this guy: http://www.savile-rogue.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Arsenal-fan-half-300×300.png (with two half-shirts), and i for the life of me can’t remember his name. it was outstanding, the whole damn thing.

Perhaps the best way to get rid of Mustafi (who displayed his patented move of raising his arm for offside after he lost Lewandowski for the goal) is for UE to name him captain. Given the recent history of Arsenal skippers, he’s bound to pick up a season ended in short order. Addition by subtraction.

Cleverest idea I’ve heard in quite some time. ?

  19. on 19 Jul 2019 at 2:18 am19North Bank Ned

scg@16: I have always rated Martinez. But he needs regular games as all keepers do to learn their trade.

Ozil’s running clearly notable on the highlights.

And a fine report of the match, too.

Cahill will be a liability just
like Mus – the only difference
is in the type of liability.

I suppose the benefit is we
can sell Mus to boost funds
and also usher Cahill out of
the Colin Pates exit after a
    season.

Anyway, let’s see if a centre-
back is among the 3 or 4
    ready now signings that UE
    mentioned.

  29. on 19 Jul 2019 at 2:48 pm29bt8

Not really sure though, never having flown that airline. When will Arsenal be planning a preseason tour of Rwanda, I wonder, or does the endorsement only extend to travel by other people?

  30. on 19 Jul 2019 at 2:58 pm30Cynic

Everton are supposedly buying Zaha for £80m, so if we let them buy him, then we buy them for £36m, we’ll be quids in.

This is what’s known as having a Boris Johnson like grip on reality. 🙂

  31. on 19 Jul 2019 at 4:19 pm31bt8

Playing back the game, the first time I have seen Arsenal this summer, the away shirts look great, and Unai looks like he should be able to see better with those glasses. Come to think of it, wasn’t he squinting quite a lot last season?

  32. on 19 Jul 2019 at 4:58 pm32bt8

Arsenal youngsters effin blitzed Bayern in the last ten minutes and I have a feeling they can do that again.

  33. on 19 Jul 2019 at 6:57 pm33Biscuitbum

I was slightly glum when it appeared Spurs were trumping our deal for Saliba, a player with such tremendous potential, that he would be out of our price range next summer, whatever anyone says. Turns out that it was just their bald little c**t of a chairman making mischief as per. I couldn’t read the full page ‘Spurs hijack Arsenal deal…’ in the Sunday Mirror nor any of the other Spurs eulogies.

If we can get him on board for next season, sign Everton, and finally get the Tierney deal over the line, it wouldn’t be such a bad summer. The Caballos loan I can take or leave, but let’s have no more of the Zaha BS which is a huge red herring IMO. If we need more cover in defence I would even be open for a season long loan for someone experienced like Cahill, but please Arsenal, give the youngsters a proper chance this season.

  34. on 19 Jul 2019 at 10:19 pm34TTG

    Scruz,
Always lovely to hear your news. We moan about the club but your efforts to follow it from so far away are a refreshing insight into what Arsenal really means.
Re the potential signings the level of real insight into potential signings is really disappointing. It’s a combination of ‘ITK ‘ journos who are in reality nothing of the sort and recycling of tired stories several days out of date. Social media brings very little enlightenment in many areas.
As for what we should do-
Our main priority is to strengthen our defence. We are pathetically weak at centre back and need better full backs who can multi-task. Bellerin is out for some time yet.
So I think we need to sign Cahill ( far from perfect but we have limited options) and maybe another good dependable central defender who can play in a three or a four. Koscielny should never kick a ball for the club again as he will be a distraction given his position with the club.
We should pursue Tierney as long as he will be fit by the middle of September to play a full season . He is seriously debilitated at present.
I think the Ceballos loan is very important. Xhaka is very limited and I’d love to sell him. But most regulars know that.
Not sure on spending a fortune on a winger. We have real options there in Nelson and Saka possibly Martinelli. We can’t afford Zaha because the club has been mismanaged and he isn’t a surefire success.
Thursday showed how good Ozil can be. But will he do it for a season?
We have real potential we can harness this season in Willock, Martinez, Nketiah , Nelson, ESR ( when fit) and Saka. The latter could really be a wow. Chambers could be useful. I think we can let Bielik, Jenkinson, Mustafi, Elneny and Mkhitaryan( probably immovable) go . Kolasinac could go if Tierney is signed and fit,
Note also the promotion of Robbie Burton who was nowhere near the team last season. He is interesting.
Pity we haven’t got any great defenders coming through.
We have to be pragmatic and this will involve compromise and shifting players off the payroll who are not value for money. We have plenty of them.
We have to hope our defence is efficient – it won’t be better than that. Maybe ten less goals conceded. If we can repeat our attacking performance we might get into the CL. I’m not sure we can look beyond that
    ‘

  38. on 19 Jul 2019 at 11:51 pm38scruzgooner

cheers, ned, matt, ttg. it was so much fun to go. ironic i get to see the team live, while y’all (this time) had to get up at, in holic’s inimitable phrase, sparrowfart. i have to get up at half sparrowfart to get to our supporter’s bar, but there’s always pints of guinness that can be imbibed at two hours past the slight bird’s wind…call it compensating breakfast.

matt, definitely spine-tingly. i felt buoyed by all the emotion.

ttg, i’d only keep jenko of your list, and kola. the latter looked really good on wednesday, even played some defense. if we got tierney, he and nacho would be perfect backups depending on the team or time of game. jenks, chambo, holding, papa, bellerin, tierney, plus nacho and kola mean we’re set with a decent defense. not great, but decent. if we get in any of the others we’re mooting, even better. i am more convinced we need hector cover, because amn is NOT a right back. wingback with a 3 i can buy, but not corner in a 4…he overcommits and gets beat by quick feet.

sad about kozzer, but yeah, bye bye felicia. cahill? not thinking he’ll do much to improve the above.

one other note about the game, or the afters, wednesday. the teams slowly filed into the tunnel afterwards, and we did the ozil chant when he came by. he stripped off his top and handed it to a young boy, about 8 or 9, who then ran screaming through the crowd with happiness. i saw him a little later wearing the shirt (it nearly fit him, he was a big lad :D) and asked “arsenal for life?” when he walked by…he just grinned, nodded, and scampered off… i suppose anyone else’s jersey would have achieved the same, but not one other player really even acknowledged us chanting them (except eddie, when he was being interviewed for the MOTM by the goalside below us).

to my point: yeah, we harsh on ozil for being an underperformer, but he played well, then acted a star after…

More good work from the kids
    in America it seems.

Edu says he has a lot of work
to do. Ozil says he’s happy.
I says where’s the new defenders.

And Iwobi says he will have to
consider his future if we sign
Zaha. Not much chance of us
signing Zaha IMO but I’d rather
    Iwobi thought about why we
    need new players wide left.

Watching the boys in America today v Florientina gave me many memories of their great visit to Sydney ….was it really two years ago?.

I really wonder what Zaha will give us. Though i must admit when he plays against us he frightens the shits out of me.

I would like to see the youngster given a go.
Following look good players: willox, burton, eddie, medley
chamber and holding i think will be a good defensive unit.
I feel sorry for mustafi …just out of his depth….

WATCHING THE DEFENCE TODAY…..HOW WOULD THEY HAVE SURVIVED AGAINST LIVERPOOL/MAN CITY?….WE COULD BE 3 DOWN AT HALF TIME.

Am happy to get teirney in
then we would have bellarin, teirney,

Currently payers are overated and over priced.

    give the young a chance

sorry about mix of caps etc ..pc stuffed

Mary@68, I hope the physicians can find a antibiotic that clears the sepsis and that the big fella can make a full recovery. Thoughts with you both. ?

Mary, please give all of our best wishes to the big man. We miss him when he is not here imparting his unique take on the world.

    Hugs to you both.
