Real Put Gunners On The Spot

Jul 24th, 2019 by 'holic

A typical game of two halves played out as The Arsenal surrendered a commanding lead and stumbled to a penalty shoot-out defeat against Real Madrid.

We were ahead early when Alexandre Lacazette rounded Navas and pulled the ball back which hit Nacho’s hand with the defender on the floor. Astonishingly the referee decided it was a red card offence and set a precedent that would come back to bite us. Lacazette’s penalty hit both posts before nestling in the net.

Arsenal were two goals to the good nine minutes later as Lacazette’s dummy allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to race through and score with a little help from Ramos.

The referee levelled the numbers up with two quick cautions in succession for Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The Arsenal defender first fouled Kroos on the counter before an even softer foul on Modric. Encouraged to reach for a second yellow by the loathesome Ramos the referee did exactly that. Two soft dismissals in a friendly. Ludicrous.

Real finally responded and Emiliano Martinez was forced into an interception to prevent a tap-in for Benzema off a Carvajal cross. Benzema then squandered a fine headed opportunity.

The interval saw the introduction of Bale for Hazard, and it was he who reduced the arrears as The Gunners appealed for a foul on Martinez.

Asensio then struck the equaliser three minutes later as once more we appealed for an offside, only to be denied.

Bale then scrambled an Aubameyang effort off the line following a goalmouth scramble. The Welshman hit another fine effort as the final whistle approached. Would anybody break the deadlock? No, was the answer.

We did not look good from the spot in the shoot-out. Granit Xhaka, Nacho Monreal and Robbie Burton missed their spot-kicks and Real won it 3-2. That was possibly harsh on the Gunners who had competed well. Once again Joe Willock caught the eye. He has been a major plus of the US tour. Is it enough to earn him a Premier League opportunity in the season that follows? Good luck to him.

Fine report Guvna. You’re coming on as well in pre-season as young Willock so we can look forward to next seasons linguistic virtuosity with optimism. Roll on the real thing (provided we add defensive strength).

  3. on 24 Jul 2019 at 6:04 pm3Goonerholic

Thank you kind sir. Pleasure to be watching some real football again.

  4. on 24 Jul 2019 at 7:12 pm4Trev

    Nice one, Holic !

You’d think someone could come up with an uncontentious referee for a pre-season friendly, would you not ?

That is the way with The Arsenal though. Their second goal was offside and a foul on the keeper, and the second yellow on Sokratis was ridiculous – and would never have been given without the concerted efforts of Ramos and his Madrid firm.
I hear he has applied for membership of the Berkeley Hunt. He should walk in.

In other news, Willock did indeed look good again and Martinez’ selection ahead (?) of Leno is interesting. The defensive issues are becoming quite critical, it will surprise no-one to hear.

  5. on 24 Jul 2019 at 7:24 pm5TTG

    What Trev said.
Martinez looks a much more solid keeper and Willock continues to show great improvement. We cannot enter the season with any optimism though if we don’t strengthen at centre back. Chambers is an emergency option and Holding will be a welcome reinforcement but we need a quality solid shithouser to shore things up. ( Where are you Willie Young?) Gary Cahill looks a real option but if it meant Mustafi leaving I’d take John Terry! In fact I’d take Pascal Cygan back .Ok that’s going too far but you take my point I’m sure.

  6. on 24 Jul 2019 at 8:08 pm6Goonerholic

Good shout re Cahill, TTG. Given our alleged financial situation a punt on a 12 month contract for him isn’t the worst option I’ve seen.

More incredible is buying a young defender we rate with cold hard cash and loaning him back to France for a year where he could pick up a serious injury. Some insurance is hopefully written into that deal?

  7. on 24 Jul 2019 at 8:45 pm7Trev

    TTG,

I’ll match your Pascal Cygan with an Igors Stepanovs and raise you a Gus Ceasar.

This could go on for some time – plenty of shockers still to call ?

  8. on 24 Jul 2019 at 9:05 pm8bathgooner

    Trev,

I’ll see your Gus Caesar with a Richie Powling and raise you a Terry Mancini.

  9. on 24 Jul 2019 at 9:07 pm9Cynic

I’ll throw Ian Ure into the mix, seeing as we’ve gone Full Mancini already.

    What’s a Jeff Blockley worth?

  11. on 24 Jul 2019 at 11:04 pm11TTG

If you want to play hardball chaps I hurl Pat Howard at you with a Mikael Sylvestre chaser

  12. on 24 Jul 2019 at 11:31 pm12Trev

Didn’t take much of a chaser to catch Mikael Sylvestre but I’ll offer you a Squillaci and a Stathis Tavlaridis.

    I’m out !

  13. on 25 Jul 2019 at 12:16 am13Cynic

    What’s a Jeff Blockley worth?

    At today’s prices, about £63m and 27p

I’ll offer you a Squillaci and a Stathis Tavlaridis.

    Sounds like a brothel menu.

    I’m told.

  14. on 25 Jul 2019 at 6:09 am14Mark Mywords

I thought both red cards were totally correct.
The Real player deliberately put his hand out to stop a goal. How was that not a dismissal? Were we watching the same game?
Likewise Sokratis. They were both bookable offences so he had to go. He was done for speed and skill and did what he normally does.
The fact that it was a pre season friendly has nothing to do with it. I’ve watched “friendly” games like that descend into chaos. For it to be any use, you have to referee it properly.
The ref got it right both times.

So it seems Ceballos is a done deal and Kierney is still on.

A centre back has to be a priority …..

    Callabos deal indeed done.

    as is the saliba deal:

    https://www.arsenal.com/news/salibasigns-saliba-join-club

    let’s all laugh at tottenham.

and mary, what’s cba’s status? hopefully your silence the last couple days is a good thing (my wife always says “no news is good news”).

  18. on 25 Jul 2019 at 7:05 pm18bt8

Saliba looks to be a decent bloke. Hoping that merely hides his mean streak.

  19. on 25 Jul 2019 at 7:32 pm19TTG

I’m told we may still sign Tierney and Zaha. Not sure how that works out. Don’t you need money for that?
I was supposed to be at the AST meeting today but have to be on a teleconference to Sydney instead so I missed out on the Oval and Arsenal . I wonder if the signings were timed to placate the angry hordes tonight?
My final offering for veterans is Gordon Ferry and Colin Hill
    Touche !

    what the hell?

So Kolasinac is outside the car taking them on unarmed and Ozil… drives off and leaves him.

    Give it a rest, Cynic.

  23. on 26 Jul 2019 at 4:42 am23bt8

I hope the carjackers are caught and punished, and our two men are shaken but not stirred.

  24. on 26 Jul 2019 at 6:17 am24ksn

Ceballos appears to be a technically good player with a good right foot. Exciting to watch him.

I thought we might have made more noise about signing D. Ceballos.

    Please yourselves.

The Europey League is alive and kicking again. Three of us have teams registered so far. If you renew your membership you should auto-enrol, but if not drop me a line for the code.

Prize as ever a pint the next time I see you. I currently owe Wind for last season. Good luck all.

    Hello Guvnor
Be happy to join the Europey League
if you can send me a code (and a
    guide for the digitally challenged?)

    Cynic
Ceballos is warmly welcomed by me
and hopefully he’s a quick learner.

Any news from anyone on the Q&A
    session at the club?

I’ve been away for a couple of days
and I was wondering how it went

  30. on 27 Jul 2019 at 12:38 am30OsakaMatt

The carjacking was a bit of
    a shock to me – I’m glad
    the players and their wives
    are unharmed.

    I’ve been away from London
from 20 odd years now but
    I don’t remember this sort
    of thing happening. Rose
    coloured glasses maybe but
    I thought our muggers were
    a bit more pedestrian.
Is it a common occurrence on
    our mean streets now?

  31. on 27 Jul 2019 at 2:10 am31Silly Second Yella

well of course it’s common if the streets are mean

I think the decibels/D.Ceballos joke went over some heads. 🙁

  33. on 27 Jul 2019 at 9:05 am33OsakaMatt

    Yep, right over mine Cynic.

Thanks for link, now to read
    the golden words of our
    leaders.

  34. on 27 Jul 2019 at 10:31 am34Countryman100

Interesting discussion going on on Twitter at the moment (follow @DarrenArsenal1 to get the thread) about the Newcastle away game. Tickets in the away end are now sold out. However there are lots of tickets available in the rest of the ground. A number of Arsenal fans are saying that they prefer to sit with the home supporters at SJP because away fans are placed up in the Gods, up 12 flights of stairs and a long way from the pitch. However NUFC supporters club are appealing to Arsenal fans not to sit with home fans as they are trying to organise a boycott of the game to protest against Mike Ashley (which accounts for why so many seats are going unsold). Shades of Blackpool away last year.

  35. on 27 Jul 2019 at 10:37 am35OsakaMatt

    the words weren’t golden.

But I did read we tried to
    buy Ceballos in 2017 when
he left Betis. He’s been on
the radar for a while it
    seems.

  36. on 27 Jul 2019 at 11:25 am36Countryman100

Ornstein says we will close deal to buy Nicolas Pepe in next 24/48 hours.

    WTF?

  37. on 27 Jul 2019 at 12:31 pm37OsakaMatt

    Blimey.
He’s quite a tall lad. Perhaps
he can play centre back too.

  38. on 27 Jul 2019 at 12:48 pm38OsakaMatt

But if Ornstein is right it is
quite the coup for Raul &
co. And we did need a goal
threat wide. So I salute you
    Raul.

    Now get a CB please

  39. on 27 Jul 2019 at 1:20 pm39bt8

There is no mention of Arsenal on Nicolas Pepe’s Wikipedia page but there is an odd mention of a certain FC Barcelona. Make of that what you will

  40. on 27 Jul 2019 at 1:21 pm40bt8

CB budget blown if we are getting Pepe?

  41. on 27 Jul 2019 at 2:45 pm41Countryman100

CB could be a loan, especially as Saliba into team in 12 months.

  42. on 27 Jul 2019 at 3:02 pm42OsakaMatt

    We’re paying for Pépé in
    instalments so we might
    have money for a CB.
Tierney is still a target so
    I suppose that will leave
    us cashless and open to
    the dreaded (by me)
    Cahill option.

  43. on 27 Jul 2019 at 3:05 pm43OsakaMatt

    Still Raul has surprised me
    with the pursuit of Zaha
    and Pépé so who knows

  44. on 27 Jul 2019 at 3:20 pm44TTG

So maybe there was a plan after all! Tierney is nearly done and given Saliba’s arrival next year I could accept the Cahill option

  45. on 27 Jul 2019 at 4:43 pm45Cynic

    £72m for Pepe?

Let’s hope he’s not Pepe Le Pew for that money.

The new kit must be selling like fucking hot cakes.

  46. on 27 Jul 2019 at 5:08 pm46Countryman100

Ha Ha Cynic. A little French skunk in search of love and appreciation. ?

  47. on 27 Jul 2019 at 5:55 pm47Cynic

So Ryan Shawcross has basically done a Ramsey on himself and his feet now point both ways at the same time.

I take no pleasure from this.

    However

  48. on 27 Jul 2019 at 7:08 pm48Countryman100

I can’t deny it, I am genuinely excited by the prospect of Pepe, Auba, Laca and Ceballos next year and so glad I invested in tickets and a hotel for Newcastle. Now get Kierney over the line and buy or loan a half decent centre back and we are good to go. Not getting over excited, if we do the last bit, my prediction would be third, behind Liverpool and City. But really pleased that our attack looks so much less boring than last year. You score two, we’ll score three. Copyright Kevin Keegan.

Please let it all be true.

  50. on 27 Jul 2019 at 9:00 pm50Devon Stu

I’ll be very pleased if Pepe joins us but also have a horrible feeling that it might just result in Auba moving to ManU to replace Lukaku. I hope I’m wrong.
