We’re Off And Running In Colorado – #WeCareDoYou

Jul 16th, 2019 by 'holic

Quickly into tonight’s post as it will be a full one.

Our 2019/20 season kicked off in the early hours of this (Tuesday) morning with a less than taxing fixture against another of Stan Kroenke’s clubs, the Colorado Rapids. A young Arsenal side put a stranglehold on the fixture early on. Debut boy Gabriel Martinelli was off target with a great chance to open his Gunners account in the fourth minute, but the reprieve was temporary and Bukayo Saka burst through to chip an effort goanward that the goalkeeper could get a hand to, but not enough to prevent it crossing the line.

James Olayinka, there may be a name for the future, cut out a wayward defensive pass, strode forward, and unleashed a piledriver into the far top corner to double our advantage just before the half hour mark was reached. Well worth a look if you can see it.

Martinelli, impressive on first viewing, added the third when he got either chest or shoulder to a Dominic Thompson cross from point-blank range just past the hour. As a contest the game was over.

A tougher challenge lies in wait in the shape of Bayern Munich in the early hours of Thursday morning, UK time.

#WeCareDoYou

I had the good fortune to be asked to do an ABW Podcast special on my understanding of the proposals shared by an alliance of Arsenal fan groups, blogs, and influencers on Monday evening. Please find the finished article below with my usual loss of faculties in the fourth minute left in! Do feel free to ask any questions as I said at the end of the wonderfully brief show.

Josh Kroenke Responds

I spoke of us wanting to open channels of communication with the Kroenke family and today we were in receipt of an open response from Josh. There may be parts of that response that we need to address further, but thanks to Josh for engaging so quickly. Let’s see where we can go from here.

Please check out the response, with thanks to our friends @TheGoonersPod here.

That’s it for tonight. I will try and cover the Bayern Munich match on Thursday evening as best I can whilst enjoying a first drink in eleven nights and preparing for a day of golf on Friday. It may just be brief!

Until then, take care ‘holics.

    Holic
Thanks for a varied and interesting post. Today feels like a more positive day especially if we can enlist the likes of Ceballos and Soares. But we desperately need to see tge back of Mustafi and get one or two Centre backs.
I agree it is appropriate to respond as positively as we can to Josh Kroenke’s response to the letter and petition . I was encouraged that he seemed to be hurt by the criticism. He and Stan need to know how precious Arsenal is to many people and not to leave us at a huge disadvantage against clubs whose owners appear much more ambitious in sporting terms. He must for example realise that outside the USA LA Rams and his other franchises mean diddly squat compared to Arsenal. I’d wear a new Arsenal top to watch training next time if I were him !

The kids done well first game

Nice report H on a game that I personally had almost zero interest in. Probably the only way that Stanley will get to see an Arsenal team play I guess.

I must admit, I wasn’t impressed one bit with Josh Kroenke’s comments. What a total load of bollocks. The fans letter hurt? Really? So you run the club and have no idea how genuine fans feel? Why were you in Baku Josh? Run that by me again? Oh, that’s right. You were there to “represent” KSE and Daddy. And tell me about your passion for the club Josh? A club you had never heard of 10 years ago when you still thought the game was called soccer? Tell me about how owning 6 different sports franchises makes you ridiculously passionate about The Arsenal?

I don’t see for one second how anyone with a surname of Kroenke has anything but money on their minds when it comes to Arsenal Football Club.

Loving the new Adidas kits though.

What I was thinking Josh is that I will take one of each. I will pay £5 now, £10 on delivery and the rest I will spread over 3 years. This will be dependent on performance, appearances and bonuses.

    That okay with you Josh?

  12. on 17 Jul 2019 at 9:52 am12Dorset Mick

A bit much of Kronke to call for stability and patience, not sure who’s been running the club into the ground for the last few years. A bit of collective responsibility for how we got to here would be nice.

Looking at the threadbare squad, the old “Morrow, Selley, Hillier, has there been a midfield sillier?” came to mind.

Elneny, Mkhitaryan, Xhaka is the answer.

  13. on 17 Jul 2019 at 1:15 pm13Cynic

Very big, very expensive players eh?

I bet nobody we sign is what you’d call “big”, although they might be expensive (in a £35m for Mustafi way I mean).

Dani Alves can bugger off by the way. We were being linked to Marcelo the other week but errrr… over the hill defenders? We’re full already

  14. on 17 Jul 2019 at 3:38 pm14OsakaMatt

    Bold words about incoming
    players, hope they’re justified.
    Anyway, seeing is believing as
    always.

Seems UE is pondering over the
captain but it’ll be 4 or 5 players
again. I don’t really like that way
but to be fair I’m not sure how
much difference it makes as we
don’t have a stand out choice
    anyway.

  15. on 17 Jul 2019 at 5:37 pm15TTG

It looks as if we may be making progress in recruiting although Ceballos is likely to be a one season loan and Saliba won’t join us until the season after next. So they may never play together. Interestingly we appear to have beaten off the Totts to sign both players. It may be simply that we offer more money but it will make them realise a shiny new stadium and a Champions League final place ( exactly where we were in 2006) does not make you a European mega team .
I agree with every word of Steve’s rant ( if I may call it that) but I do sees that we might for the first time have got to the Kroenkes. If we have that is progress.

  16. on 17 Jul 2019 at 7:59 pm16Bathgooner

That was an excellent open letter to the Kroenke’s and I totally agree with Steve T on Kroenke Minor’s response. Pardon me if I don’t get too excited at this point. Talk is cheap sunshine. I’ll wait to see what you leave on the doorstep.

Meanwhile good point by TTG. The letter clearly winged them.

  17. on 18 Jul 2019 at 2:29 am17OsakaMatt

    Ceballos would be interesting as
long as there is no forced buy
option at the end of the season.
Another option in the centre is
good. It’s not the priority though.

Hopefully the Alves story is just
    bollocks.

Attended the friendly tonight between Aston Villa(3), the visitors, and home side Minnesota United(0). Healthy contingent of traveling support sported banners such as “Detroit Villans” so they may not have all flown in from the UK but they were in mid season form. After Villa scored the third goal they proudly proclaimed “We are Premier League we are Premier League” but the comatose home support, somewhat like the home team, failed to come up with a response. Both sides seemed pedestrian much of the game but Villa did manage to move the ball quickly and with purpose especially in the second half against a toothless home side that is on a 7 game win streak in domestic competitions, and probably more focused on extending that streak. But the visit of Villa and their fans was a breath of fresh air and made for an enjoyable night out.

ht at dignity, 0-0. overall arse had the better of it, we just couldn’t get the final ball. one shot? bayern and arse defense making preseason mistakes. arse shooting towards us 1st half, row m nearly center of goal.

emi is taking shots getting ready or what while team is in locker room.

özil looked alternately sharp and dire, but was in the mix for our bits done well. willock looks good, as do laca and auba. defense shaky as always.

    second half about to begin.

  20. on 18 Jul 2019 at 5:16 am20scruzgooner

lively start to the 2nd, og bayern, 1-0 to us. then gannet pulls it just wide in response…whew!

  21. on 18 Jul 2019 at 5:23 am21OsakaMatt

    Thanks scruz and bt8!

    Is “Gannet” Gnabry?

  22. on 18 Jul 2019 at 5:37 am22TTG

An unusual- and slightly messy way to score from the Mirror’s report

Mkhitaryan plays the ball across Bayern’s box to Aubameyang, and the striker unleashes a shit which hits the unfortunate Louis Poznanski.

  23. on 18 Jul 2019 at 5:57 am23scruzgooner

oh, what a finish by eddie. we HAVE to see more of his work rate and guts. awesome awesome end to a nervous second half, ars 2-1 bayern…

  24. on 18 Jul 2019 at 6:09 am24scruzgooner

    matt yes, gnabry, whiskers wide.

  25. on 18 Jul 2019 at 6:11 am25scruzgooner

ttg, yes, messy, but earned. auba missed a sitter, and we definitely had other possibilities. but when the kids came on, they were even better…

  26. on 18 Jul 2019 at 6:13 am26OsakaMatt

    I don’t know it that’s a typo for
TTG but if not I’ve got to feel bad
    for Poznanski – surely ungentlemenly
    conduct 🙂

  27. on 18 Jul 2019 at 6:18 am27OsakaMatt

just saw the goals – great skill
    for the 2nd

  28. on 18 Jul 2019 at 10:20 am28Cynic

the striker unleashes a shit which hits the unfortunate Louis Poznanski.

    Unfortunate indeed.

  29. on 18 Jul 2019 at 11:07 am29Sancho P

Is it possible to unleash a shit?

  30. on 18 Jul 2019 at 11:14 am30ksn

OM @ 17. Regarding Ceballos loan move, the problem is that there is no option for us to buy at the end of the loan term. Real Madrid are not interested in selling him and we would only be giving him a platform to furthering his development as a player. Real would be the only long term beneficiary of this move. However, he is a great talent and it would be nice to see him in Arsenal colours for a season.
