A Thrilling Finish Sees The Arsenal Into Top Four

Sep 23rd, 2019 by 'holic

A quick look at the Villa match before turning my head to the Forest preview.

Once again we allowed a struggling side two sloppy goals. After McGinn had run beyond a static defence to flick the opener home Ainsley Maitland-Niles was given a second yellow card in a fifty challenge which has provoked opposing views. Being out of the firing line might be a good thing for him. Emery responded by sending on Calum Chambers for Saka at half-time, a shame for the man of the moment.

We drew level when Matteo Guendouzi, who along with Bukayo Saka provided the few bight sparks of the first-half, slalomed and was brought down by a posse of Villa defenders. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang generously allowed Nicolas Pepe the kick and the expensive you scored his first Gunners goal. Let’s hope that opened the floodgates.

Grealish left three defenders trailing in his wake before putting the ball on a plate for Wesley to restore Villa’s advantage. That stung the ten men into action.

Chambers alertness allowed him to collect his own cross and play a delicate flick over the keeper and into the far corner. With nine minutes remaining we had an unlikely point against lowly opponents. Three minutes later Aubameyang was fouled on the edge of the box and climbed off the turf to drive the ball into the net to clinch the remarkable triumph that sent us into the top four.

Character, certainly. On the other side though we need drastic changes to this defence, and soon.

Finally, a word of thanks to all who have sent their good wishes after my condition deteriorated yesterday. It is much appreciated.

Villa yesterday – Forest tomorrow

Seems madness as we are not playing again until next Monday night. We are pretty likely to change most, if not all of yesterday’s side. Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi, Kieran Tierney, Mesut Ozil, Emile Smith Rowe, Joe Willock, and Lucas Torreira were snapped in training today on the club website. Not a bad basis for a side.

The ‘holic pound

Obviously there is not much value around. We are huge favourites, but I could do with a win and fancy 2-0 at 17/2.

Josh and Danny have put together a preview of the Forest game for the ABW team and it is faithfully reproduced below.

Take care all, and stay healthy.

I find that I have to agree with _everything_ cba says @4 above.

I beg to differ with your prediction, Guv. I feel that someone is due a paddlin’ from this Arsenal team. It might be Forest. I’ll stick my neck out and put in a bid for 5-1.

I’d be delighted if Forest escaped with a 1-0 defeat and we gave Manchester Rowdies a hiding, but I’ll keep my starry-eyed optimism in check over that one.

How does our team get to play again on Tuesday with only 1 day rest and then play the next game on Monday? Maybe it makes sense somewhere.

    Well done Holic.
I shoved a preview over to you in case you were very poorly.
We won’t win this easily unless Forest play a weakened team too . Forest are sixth and knocked us out of tge FA Cup the last time we met.
It’s a great chance for the young boys upfront ( I think Martinelli, John Jules and Nelson will start ) and Mesut will get the armband .
I fancy a 2-1 win with Tierney getting the winner!

I am overjoyed to learn of cba’s obvious recovery. Welcome back!
As an Englishman, my mere existence will be irksome to you of course, but the feeling is not reciprocated. I am genuinely delighted to have you back at the bar even though I myself have been conspicuous by my absence in recent years.
Now if we can just get the Guvnor back on his feet….. (get well soon, mate).
It would appear that the Arsenal back four is in much the same condition as ‘Holic and the Irish Wordsworth….
Never seen a more shambolic Arsenal team….entertaining as it is.
    Will it never end?

  39. on 24 Sep 2019 at 2:56 am39bt8

The gang’s all here so strike up the band.

Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and should be Sheffield Wednesday to complete the trifecta of the most picturesque club names in English football, Plymouth Argyle notwithstanding.

    Thinking about who’s
    available I suppose we
    could play Mavro.
    Or even Mus, Mavro, Rob
as a 3 if it’s too soon for
    Hector & Kieran.
As TTG said it will be a tricky
    game with a makeshift team.
But to be honest getting our
    first choice full backs fit
    again is more important than
    the result.

  43. on 24 Sep 2019 at 8:09 am43Vinay Prabhakar

No telecast in India means stream and watch the game and i am going to do it for only one reason- watch mesut and say sigh we are wasting him here and not against united, a game which begs for him to play but he wont be. Unai knows.

Ok enough about my dislike towards emery, credit where due- Auba has been magnificent for us this season and the sole reason for us to be bragging about. He has almost single-handedly kept us in the mix considering how poorly the majority of the team has been playing. I do think he and lacazette are the only two world class players we have in the team considering mesut is “rested” most games.

  44. on 24 Sep 2019 at 8:31 am44OsakaMatt

Looking at the bunch of teams
    from 3rd to 12th all within 3
    points, they are all muchly
    much of a muchness. Our
    attack of Auba, Laca and
    hopefully Pepe is the difference
in class. Really we should be
    3rd this season.

And it is unfortunate about Ozil as
    Vinay says.
    Wasted on Emery’s utilitarian
    little brain more’s the pity.

  45. on 24 Sep 2019 at 2:52 pm45bathgooner

Fine review and preview Guvna. Good to see you ‘back in harness’.

The gap between this match and the Villa basketball game dictates major changes to the starting eleven. I suspect we will start with something close to:

    Martinez;

    Chambers, Mustafi, Holding, Tierney;

    Willock, Torreira, Özil;

    Pepe, Martinelli, Nelson.

With Bellerin, Saka and Smith-Rowe making appearances from the bench if all goes to plan.

It would be a pity not to have the nous and firepower of Luis, Ceballos, Guendouzi and Aubameyang on the bench just in case we need another second half miracle.

Good to see that cba has recovered his surreal vision of the world and late night stamina.

Brilliant goal! Martinelli is a talent. Great decision to send Nketiah of to the frozen north and warm this lad up. Superb cross from Nelson, even better return from Chambo and a header worthy of the great Gillie himself!

  63. on 24 Sep 2019 at 8:35 pm63iBtM

Won’t be long before the sharks are in the water for Willock. Boy’s brilliant. Tierney having a marvellous debut.

  64. on 24 Sep 2019 at 8:42 pm64iBtM

With Tierney in this form the Faltering Fullback should never darken the left side of our team again.

ESR off with a broken nose on a stretcher. Saka coming on.

  66. on 24 Sep 2019 at 8:53 pm66iBtM

What an entertaining first half. OK it’s a Champ League team but I’d pay good money to watch this quality every week. 12 shots for us one for them but the best two stats of the night, no pissing around from the back and no Xhaka. We have some seriously good Academy talent on show. Hector on in the second half for a late saunter?

  67. on 24 Sep 2019 at 9:01 pm67Gunnersaurus Stunt Double

    Really good stuff.

From the team and BTM. Great ball, cross, header for the goal. Loved it. Tierney looks good (although not tall)

If Mustafi had scored that backheel volley…

Willock then Martinelli miss golden chances after marvellous build-ups but there’s no holding Holding and the big, calm returnee makes it 2-0. 20 shots for us, 2 for them and Martinez throwing and kicking the ball out like a good un. Ozil sad to go off for Dani C. He’s played well enough.

  70. on 24 Sep 2019 at 9:37 pm70iBtM

Hector on for Tierney to great applause for both. Fabulous debut. MUST start and the Old Toilet.

Bloody brilliant fifth for Martinelli. Great all round performance tonight from the ‘largely crap players that Wenger left Emery’ as I read some dickery-dock this week.

Stand-outs by all of the youngsters. Chambers played really well at RB and LB, a good squad man to have.

OK, it’s only Forest but the skill and commitment level tonight were the highest I’ve seen this season and the error and stupidity quota was the lowest (despite Mustafi being on the field, it would be remiss of me not to mention).

Goodnight, Holics – arrival of grandchild number four is imminent. Little sleep tonight I fear. Her Nellieness like the proverbial cat on hot bricks.

while i’m sorry for the holic pound, that was a lot of fun to watch. yes, it was only forest. but they hardly got a sniff in, so glad to see holding, hekate, chambo, and the scottish lad keeping mustafi from exploding into one of his mistakes.

i love joe willock. he’s going to be a full-on star by the end of this season. has it all in his locker, and knows how to use it.

agree with btm about martinelli and nketieh. but i do hope the brazilian keeps developing apace, nketieh is having a blinder of a season so far.

    the kids are alright.

That tiny club up the road lost Colchester on penalties palyung mostly senior players oh well what a great evening all around! ?

Young kept going despite the fact it was only Nottingham Forest they played with their hear and heads on. Come on even Mustafi looked decent.

Great to have Holding and Bellerin back, Tierney looked aggressive on that right flank. I like it.

Now for Unai to bed these guys into the first team please.

This might be of interest to you, cba, or it might not…

BBC series on the Northern Ireland conflict, first three episodes on iPlayer here.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0008c47/spotlight-on-the-troubles-a-secret-history-series-1-episode-1

They have used some long lost American documentary footage in the series, which shows some interesting film of Martin McGuinness prepping a huge car bomb, amongst other things.

It’s good stuff but probably won’t tell you anything you didn’t already know.

Anyways, off to bed. Well.. to watch telly.

Villa. Shocking defending. Great fight back. Good three points, but why do we make it so tough?

Only seen the goals from tonight. Some acts of real quality, especially from the youngsters. Great to see Holding, Bellerin and Tierney all get game time. Great strike from Martinelli for the 5th.

Comedy Spuds at it again. All very funny.

BtM. Best wishes. At your age you need the sleep.

cba, greetings. Nice to see you back to normal.

    H. Hope you are feeling much better.

    Up the Gunners.

too soon for Hector so I
    guess Calum plays.

  113. on 25 Sep 2019 at 7:54 am113Vinay Prabhakar

Martinelli gets the headlines deservedly but boy seeing holding, Tierney and hector back was joyous. It really is refreshing to see players just play with positive intent and the scoreline reflects the same. I do wish the same happens in the league as well agreeing that the quality will be very different. What is for certain is we need to play players as per their strengths, do not play Torreira as a box to box midfielder when he is a DM, do not play xhaka as a dm when he is a cm. Torreira sitting back suits us better considering both our cb’s are prone to errors and xhaka slightly ahead of him makes is better for the balance and for the player himself.

On to old toilet and it has been 13 years since we won there in the league. Every season their team gets worse and we still flounder there and it is just got to do with the lack of belief we have when we go there. Are the scars so deep that it is not healed still? Unai, this is our best chance to beat them, go for it, play positively and defend as a unit, we got this one.

  114. on 25 Sep 2019 at 8:09 am114TTG

Well done the team. Pangloss had the faith that I didn’t in our abilitybto score five .
Good luck Btm I’ve been through that a few times and found whisky helped.
