I Wish I had Missed More Of This International Break

Oct 15th, 2019 by 'holic

The accursed interlull. This one crept up on me to be honest. This will probably sound incredible but it simply slipped from my mind at the backend of last week into Saturday. Normally, as you know, I would try to watch as many home nations matches plus as many as I can where Gunners are likely to feature.

I still cannot believe England were playing on Friday and I simply didn’t know or hadn’t registered it. As it turns out it was to prove a turgid affair and I missed the Three Lions first qualifying defeat in ten years. Is that true? Although I’m obviously aware we have been producing the goods under Southgate that statistic caught me by surprise.

My first game I discovered by accident. Bored as bored gets I did a little surf of the channels and came across the pre-amble to Scotland versus San Marino. They spoke of the Scots dismal recent record (tell me about it) and of England’s unexpected defeat in the Czech Republic (What? Where? When?). It was no surprise, but pleasing nonetheless for the hosts to roll over the weakest nation in world football in atrocious conditions. May this bring with it continued improvement against the mildly improved opposition to follow.

Wales scrapped admirably for a point against the World Cup finalists. So to Monday night and the talking point of the break. At this point I must warn of an abrupt end to this piece not originally intended.

England’s visit to Bulgaria would always have two focal points it seemed not unreasonable to assume. As for the match itself, it followed the path set out by Scotland a day earlier. If you get a poor side in front of you then all you can do is put them to the sword and draw some confidence and belief from a 6-0 win. The scoreline did not flatter the visitors who in truth should have had double figures.

Sadly the game will be remembered long as justifying the pre-match fears of racist behaviour by the hosts. Even with a chunk of one end of the stadium closed as punishment for previous infringements of the same nature we both saw and heard some pretty disgusting stuff. I wholeheartedly concur with the condemnation delivered during and after the match.

However, my sudden ending is covered by a tweet I published earlier. This is not just a problem with the rest of Europe which some of ours would have you believe. Examples of anti-social behaviour can be found behind the entire pyramid structure here as well and before those involved join in with the condemnation of Bulgaria I offered this opinion, correction, fact.

“Fully agree with the condemnation of the Bulgarians, unless you are guilty of hissing at the marshmen and singing all the Y word songs. That makes you equally as bad. Anti-racism/anti-semitism starts at home. Wake up.”

Can anyone disagree with that?

    Here here Dave,

No place in life for what I saw last night, it’s a shame that is still alive in out domestic game.

    As always appreciated.

You’ve got Interlullitis Holic. I get it every few weeks in the autumn and spring. Last night was horrid but if you go to England games even at home you get exposed to pond life we thankfully don’t have- as far as I know- at Arsenal. Racism is alive and well throughout football and it’s horrible and as the Sterling incident showed last season at Chelsea it’s not far from home.
I used to go to every England game at Wembley but one night playing Ireland ( I was with some Irish friends) we were punched by some English yobs. I was deeply ashamed and a few years after we had the riot at Lansdowne Road. So pots and kettles come to mind. Given what’s happening politically in this country with a Home Secretary like Pritti Patel these are worrying times
Ps – Holic can you send me GSD’s email address please

The lad who ran the game for Switzerland tonight Bree Embolo was a Gooner who we let go- like Malen and Ozyakup. Looks like we made some bad decisions about a generation of very good young players

They’ve managed to destroy politics. I mean it was already desperate, with everyone sounding the same for years and fighting over the middle class middle ground, like a flock of seagulls with a bag of chips*, but now we have two extremes with a bunch of no hopers and bellends in the middle.

I will not vote Tory out of principle (and because they’re cunts)
I won’t vote Labour with the current leader and front bench
I won’t vote Lib Dem because they’re bellends (and that other thing in brackets above)

I’m not voting Brexit Party because my jackboots are at the menders.

I’ll probably vote Green again, even though they’re no hopers

    * I saw actual video of Mike and Ali Score doing just that once, with Maudsley and Reynolds scuffling over the scraps. It weren’t pretty.

In response to previous comments, principally Cynic’s, I’ll be delighted to vote Labour because they have a Socialist leader and because they have greener policies than the other mainstream parties which might slow down our environmental extermination.

  76. on 17 Oct 2019 at 1:00 pm76Vinay Prabhakar

The interview with Mesut which is on dailymail today as well as Ornstein tweeting it is excellent. Mesut talks about almost everything including his wish to stay and what happened during the attempted robbery episode. He is a very level headed guy and a terrific footballer who sadly is not going to play much for us if any.

I do not watch these international qualifiers at all, i rather watch the rugby world cup which is now into the business end of things, come on you all blacks.

We play monday night so for once i wish united beat pool this weekend but then i saw this week the 50th game the robbery that happened that day, so fuck united.

  77. on 17 Oct 2019 at 6:17 pm77Gunnersaurus Stunt Double

I can’t see the benefit of a Utd win or a win for the All Blacks. I’ve spent a lot of time in India and never noticed much interest in rugby, let alone support for the kiwis. Still, to each their own. I’m English with an Irish mother, so hoping the All Blacks lose.

Oh, and I don’t come here for the politics but I’d vote for Hector!

There is a brilliant new previewer on Gooner Fanzine TV, the guy is devastatingly handsome, knows an enormous amount about football and has the prescience of a venerable sporting guru. He says it will be 1-1 so you can confidently put your house on this prediction

  81. on 18 Oct 2019 at 6:50 am81OsakaMatt

    What is Gooner Fanzine TV?
    Once I watched some very
    odd people ranting on some
other Arsenal TV thing. Is it
    like that?
Anyway, I hope 1-1 is the
    Manure/Poo forecast as that’d
be fine. We will beat Sheff Utd
    2-0 with stout defence and
    opportune finishing.
    Now back to the? ?s

  82. on 18 Oct 2019 at 8:11 am82Vinay Prabhakar

@77, rugby is very very limited in India and played even lesser, i picked it up watching as a fascination and i really like it, all blacks will always be my favourite team, pompous or not.

The benefit of a united win/ not much but then i do worry if pool can go unbeaten and that’s the only reason to think of the improbable. I wouldn’t care a damn about them after this game.

Monday night has a draw written all over it but hope to see us put a front foot for once and take the game to them, a game that is begging to have both torreira and ozil in it but then we shall see.

  83. on 18 Oct 2019 at 9:04 am83Gunnersaurus Stunt Double

Vinay. I’m glad you’re enjoying the rugby. I’m finding it a nice counterpoint to some slow Arsenal performances but I’d love to see exciting games from us too.

I also quite fancy a return for Mesut against Sheffield. If Laca is fit and Auba on the left then Ozil will have them both plus Pepe to play into space. Could be exciting.

It’s a You Tube channel with presenters so sexy they bust the Internet. Hopefully it will be nothing like Arsenal Fan TV which is banality in a red and white hat. Layth Yousif who is very well-connected at the club is behind it and he is likely to obtain player and journalist interviews.
Won’t be as sexy as a Holic podcast though?
Hope you’re doing well Holic. The collective good wishes of your public are continually being beamed out to you

Hate to disagree GSD but Mesut away, up north on a wet Monday night? I think not.

Expect him at home against Vitoria on Thursday.

Countryman@85. It could definitely go either way and if we come home with 3 points I won’t care if he was even in the squad. It’d be good to see him back though. The argument that he doesn’t suit our style of play loses traction when we don’t have one!

  91. on 18 Oct 2019 at 6:00 pm91OsakaMatt

    I must say Gunners Fanzine
    TV was most definitely better
    than the Arsenal Fan TV
    program I watched once.
    Though only having watched
    one program from each….

    I enjoyed the look back

Scruz no pressure but it would be great to hear a report here on your first visit to the Emirates.

The excellent Jeorge Bird makes some interesting points tonight after Arsenal U23 s los5 3-1 to Chelsea . He alights on Steve Bould’s coaching and points out how poor their defending is( no clean sheets this season) and how lacking in creativity they are compared with Freddie Ljungberg’s team from last season.
Bouldy was a good youth coach previously but maybe the very subordinate role he played under Wenger has impaired his effectiveness? Certainly the contacts I have who watch the younger players rave about Freddie and believe he may be a future Arsenal head coach, Edu is also creating a great impression . This is extremely encouraging for the future of the club.

    Good win at the rugby.
    NZ next week. Already beat
    them in the cricket world
    cup. How much more
    difficult can it be?

  121. on 19 Oct 2019 at 3:22 pm121TTG

If NZ beat us and win the competition as I believe they will it will mean we have had three World Cups in a row won by the same team and it won’t help the sport.
It’s a sport I much enjoy but it won’t increase public interest throughout the globe if it’s dominated by one side. We’d see similar problems in football if the same thing occurred but the number of teams at a similar level and the intensity of competition suggests that is unlikely to happen So let’s hope we can do the sport a massive favour by winning next week. The quality of play and athleticism in top class rugby is extraordinary and should be brought to a wider audience

  127. on 20 Oct 2019 at 8:25 pm127TTG

The 1-1 draw at the Toilet means between them they dropped four points. We need someone to beat the Scallies though.
Amazing how even with VAR ManUre still get the better of the controversial decisions.
Referees have to start looking at the screens and confirming or overturning penalties . Not one has been overturned yet by this fairly obvious technique.

  128. on 20 Oct 2019 at 8:31 pm128North Bank Ned

Draws among the top teams are always good for us as they destroy points. But TTG is right @126 that someone needs to stop the Scousers before they get too far down the Invincibles road.

Amazingly, Man U are only two points above the drop zone.

    Good ebening,

Finally football is restored for the upteenth time. I actually wanted the scarlet minions to trash the Scoursers but as usual, they lack 1/100th of anything called spine to do so. As observed by Ned @128, they need to be stopped ASAP before they start dreaming of being on that road. If no one does am expecting Emery’s army to achieve that feat starting with the cup contest. Not too much to ask from this team.
And the noisy neighbours narrowly escaped as well. Excited about the game tomorrow even though am not sure why an unexciting game took over the entire day today. But Emery better keeps the Vessel sailing swagalicously with a win at Monday night raw. Hopefully, we’d see something close to our “first” eleven with the good news from the treatment table.
